Elon Musk: Trump "Betrayed" Me. He Wouldn't Have Gotten Elected Without Me.

The Bee:

babylonbeetrumpmusksplit.jpg

The media is going to make a huge deal about this. And, for once, they're right. This is a huge deal. When the two most powerful men in the world disown each other and end their fruitful political partnership, it's a huge deal.

I understand Musk's frustration. Musk put himself in a terrible business position -- pissing off his own progressive greeney customer base -- to ferret out all of the wasteful spending in government, only to see those efforts wasted.

We're not seeing $2 trillion cut from the budget. We're not even seeing $200 billion, which was a number floated as well.

Trump is asking for $9.4 billion in rescissions from the budget.

Maybe this describes you as well -- I never know what to think in these situations. Is it really true that this is the best we can do? Are there just too many leftwing "Republicans" to ever pass meaningful budget cuts?

If there are too many -- why don't we just go to war with them and turn them out of office? Why do we continue to allow Lisa Murkowski to command the entire party?

On the other hand -- did Musk over-promise? Was his ultimate plan to reform entitlement spending, which Trump promised he would not do?

No doubt, some things probably are "politically impossible." The problem is, the GOPe claims that everything actual conservatives want is "politically impossible," including stuff that is now proven to be very politically possible -- like closing the border without having to join with the Democrats on a Bipartisan Open Borders Amnesty bill.

They lie about literally everything and claim everything we ask them to do simply cannot be done. This is a lie. They just don't want to do these things, because they're establishment liberals and always have been.

So if someone says that $2 trillion in cuts is politically impossible, should I believe them? Why should I believe them, when they have lied remorselessly to me about literally everything else?

Anyway, this is a a messy public break-up and it's a shame that Trump and Musk are no longer a team.

"Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office after Musk slammed his tax and spending mega-bill as an "abomination".

The world's richest man responded by live-tweeting on his X social media platform as Trump spoke on television, saying that the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without him and slamming him for "ingratitude."

In an extraordinary rant as visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sat mutely beside him, 78-year-old Trump unloaded on SpaceX and Tesla boss Musk in his first comments on the issue.

"I'm very disappointed, because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here... All of a sudden, he had a problem," Trump said when asked about Musk.

The clash comes less than a week since Trump held a grand Oval Office farewell for Musk as he wrapped up his time leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

South African-born Musk, 53, hit back minutes later, saying Trump's claims he had advance sight of the bill were "false."

"Whatever," he added above a video of Trump saying Musk was upset about the loss of subsidies for electric vehicles.

Musk then ratcheted up the public spat even further, saying the Republican would have lost the election without his support. He was the biggest donor to Trump's campaign, to the tune of nearly $300 million.

"Without me, Trump would have lost the election," Musk said on X. "Such ingratitude."

Tesla shares fell sharply on Wall Street, down eight percent, after his comments, in a sign of the huge stakes for a falling out between the world's richest man and its most powerful.

Trump, as a businessman, seemed a little off-balance in his first term. He expected that, as the National CEO, he could announce a policy and the "business" would enact that policy.

In his second term, he's savvier about what a shitshow DC is.

Maybe the problem is that Musk, being a neophyte -- being in the Trump 1.0 mindset -- just doesn't accept that the CEO has to make crappy deals with his stupid RINO middle-managers.

I've also heard people say that Musk is angry that Trump isn't extending the Obama-era subsidies for EVs. (And if I had to make this call -- I'd extend those subsidies for ten years. Yes, I know, it's a garbage policy. But Musk has lost tens of billions of dollars due to his crusade. I'd give the guy a break. Yes, it's a political payoff. So what? Politics is mostly payoffs, and this one is well-earned.)

Musk has really crossed a line here -- Trump does not forgive anyone who doesn't say he won an election. I think Musk nuked their relationship by claiming credit for his win.

And, by the way, I think he has a point: Musk did bring in a lot of "Gray Tribe" voters, voters who usually consider themselves "above" electoral politics and the Democrat/Republican dichotomy. And Musk brought in a lot of Silicon Valley billionaires and millionaires, too.

But... I don't think he can say he won the election for Trump.

And I know he can't say that and have any future relationship with Trump.

Musk also retweeted Trump's old tweets about cutting the budget. And John Thune's, too.

They'll be friends again in a few weeks. This is two big dickswingers with big egos and big constituencies trying to show who has the bigger dick.

Although I blame them both, I blame Musk more because he drew first blood, by calling a bill that Trump is heavily pushing for an "abomination." I agree the BBB has big flaws, but come on now. What did Musk expect with this House and this Senate?

Plus, a lot of what Musk is complaining about might not be true, if you listen to Steven Smith.

Exactly. Its easy for politicians and 'splainers to say "we don't quite have the votes yet". But its not the votes we lack--its the conviction to something other than grift. IF "we" were to add 12 more of "our" guys to both the house and senate...I'm guessing nothing much would change. That's because the Rs are more attached to the grift than they are to representing "us".

22 Well, this public "blow up" between Elon Musk and Donald Trump might all be for show.

This might be something they are doing to put some distance (publicly) between them, so Musk and his companies (Specifically Tesla) regain some of their lost support from the Green Left (who are generally obsessive assholes, which I read all the time on LinkedIn).

I think it's all kind of made-up.

And the fact that there is small faction among Republicans that can't support more recisions is just more political Bullshit. They are weak and love their phoney-baloney jobs too much. The country is circling the drain financially, and it's "TOO HARD!".

It may cost the House or Senate...or may win them both.

I'm expecting a pivot from Trump once the bill is done. He's gonna full-on embrace 1990's D ideals (not the policies actually enacted, but the ideals) - healthy and strong America for Americans (so RFK's work, the immigration work, and the huge plus up to defense work). He's making a play for the white woman while keeping the jobs for the non-college man...and hoping that's enough...

He knew he couldn't make Elon happy in the bill, so he brought in the South African refugees...that apparently was deemed to little by Elon to save the relationship b/c Elon was and has always been made the fall guy for significant budget cuts not happening (that said, just seeing a budget not do much raising is unfortunately a huge win for our side)...and I think he just realized that...

37 I think the EV mandate stuff is bull.

Musk has been vocal about Tesla not needing them, and he sees them as helping Tesla a little but helping competition a lot. (Actually, they hurt Tesla as most of their vig is in the CAFE mandates which necessitate ICE companies to buy credits from EV companies.)

It sounds like bull the reddit kids come up with to try to explain someone they hate having principles -- they have to find a financial motive even when none exists.

42 Miller and Bessent and Lutnik are doing their best to get the message out - that the BBB is the first of many steps. But we need more assurances. Musk and DOGE was the radical move we wanted. The people are ready for swift and sweeping changes, but there are too many other personalities (Paul, Massey, now Musk). It's OK if all this comes to a head -- we just need a clear pathway and the commitment ... because we cannot come back from this if we go over that cliff.
And on the horizon is the aftermath of 4 years of wide-open borders and rampant trafficking immigrants into our country (after having decades of illegals having already moved in). Victor Davis Hanson already says there's no way we can undo the damage.

46 Most cycles the people vote for smaller government, yet after every election the GOP says its not possible.

The problem is the GOP, and while we've made small improvements its not enough to actually make any changes.

And I'll say this again, the goal should NOT be general spending cuts. The goal should be zeroing out spending that mostly goes to leftwingers. Why? Because the GOP would pay no price for it and it would improve things dramatically.

The reason they don't do this? A significant portion of the GOP is still controlled opposition.

50 Republicans in Congress blow the dog. They have for a long time. The reason we don’t have deeper cuts is the House and a-holes like Mike Lawler and the SALT Caucus who think the answer to their confiscatory state taxes is to have the federal taxpayers subsidize them. Johnson should have grown a pair and told them to sit down and STFU. Then he could have sent Musk after them, made them public enemy #1. But instead we now have Trump and Musk, our greatest weapons, feuding with each other while the useless Congress once again sits on the sidelines eating crudités and jerking off.

The senate has said they’re cutting will seek deeper cuts but the Murkowski and Collins Wing say they don’t like cutting like the Medicaid fraud. We need to take these people down once at a time.

If we had 50 votes in the Senate to do serious spending cuts we wouldn’t need to resort to gimmicks like rescissions.

The rescissions are a “We’ll gladly cut next Tuesday if you just let us pass a massive omnibus spending bill today.” Same scam the GOP has been running for decades.

61 Elon's pretty much right about the spending. There's no point getting the government mildly off our backs for a Presidential term (and who knows after that), if we merrily implode the currency through inflation.

The thing is, Trump's lack of interest in dealing with the national debt has been obvious for a long time, and if you watched interviews last year, it took Elon leaning on the issue to get him to even acknowledge it. The fact that BBB raised the debt ceiling shows he's not serious about addressing it, since you can't pay your way out of debt by more borrowing. He's still stuck on the foolish thinking that you can somehow keep debt "manageable."

63 I didn’t mind Musk going after them about the cuts not being deep enough. Congress was squirming and talking about doing more in reconciliation. But once Musk nut punched Trump personally, that was a bridge too far. So unnecessary. .

Posted by: Vengeance at June 05, 2025 02:52 PM (YCGTW)

64 The best thing that Trump can do is start putting Russ Vought out front more to explain that this is just the beginning of the process of cuts not the final product. He's been doing it in small interviews for some time but it never seems to break through to the wider audience.

What I find hard to believe is that Musk doesn't know this. He can say whatever he wants but he was buried up to his eyeballs in this for months.

Posted by: JackStraw at June 05, 2025 02:52 PM (viF8m)

65 PDTS just needs to lay out the facts. We're running an unsustainable, growing deficit because congress hasn't passed a budget for about 20 years now.

It's time to make some hard choices, beginning with declaring a fiscal emergency and making some command decisions on where expenditures will be frozen and which agencies will be dissolved.

And turn the auditors loose. Forensic audits and charges for malfeasance.
Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at June 05, 2025 02:49 PM (3Ope

Sic the auditors on Congresscritters, their offices, and their staffs. Congress will either get in line, or quickly try to close down as much of the government as possible to protect themselves.

He and Trump are very similar in that respect -- and both can stand the heat because they create the heat. They create the conflict necessary to get to a better place -- better design, better outcomes.

Other than that, which was done way before Elon ever endorsed Trump, I don't know how Musk thinks Trump owes him anything.

Trumo just wants a bill to fund the things he wants to fund immediately, along with keeping his 2017 tax cuts intact.

I get Elon doesn't like it, but there are far more constructive ways to go about getting things done than to throw fits on X about it.

It didn't go the way you want, then go in and lobby Congress for more cuts and reform in the future, as the GOP have pledged to do.

But expecting things to go the way you want them to in D.C. is a fools errand during the best of times, so don't get all worked up about it in this political environment.

I voted Perot the first time. This time, it would be harder. Or not. Really don't know. The GOPe had been so compromised that Perot didn't stand a chance. Musk would have more of a chance now, but all things are relative. Has the Populist era reached a point where BOTH parties are dumped, finally, to have true Federal reform? 161 But Thomas wasn't finished. He let loose in a scathing footnote:

The “‘background circumstances’” rule is nonsensical for an additional reason: It requires courts to assume that only an “‘unusual employer’” would discriminate against those it perceives to be in the majority. But, a number of this Nation’s largest and most prestigious employers have overtly discriminated against those they deem members of so-called majority groups. American employers have long been “obsessed” with “diversity, equity, and inclusion” initiatives and affirmative action plans... Initiatives of this kind have often led to overt discrimination against those perceived to be in the majority.

Knowing full well that's what will happen at the ballot box, and we'll be left with a Dem victory as they come out to vote, and the Trump voters are looking at two parties who might each represent half of what they want.

So you got one guy who likes Trump, but hates the GOP, voting for Elon-Middle-Way.

And you got another guy who likes Trump, but hates the GOP but votes for them anyway because he doesn't want to take the slightest chance of the Dems winning.

You are not Nigel Farage, Elon, and this isn't the right place or right time for that kind of ego-maniacal nonsense.

213 The harsh facts are that to do what Musk wants to do, and arguably what needs doing, would require Trump to stage a military coup, impose martial law, and imprison most of Congress and the judiciary. As attractive as that may sound, there is no way that Trump, or the right in general, has the supply needed to pull that off.

At this juuncture, I could give two shits about the debt. This reconncilation package has serious border security and immigration enforcement. It is probably our last chance to get that passed without compromising with the Dems (Amnesty).

I was willing to forgive Musk over the Christmas holiday spazz-out over H1-B visas (remember he said the opponents to H1-Bs needed to be purged from the party?) but this is the too much. This bill delivers much of the remaining campaign promises Trump made during the campaign. Trump did not run on a small government platform and neithter did his base vote for him for balanced budgets.

Let a future Democrat White House make the bad choice between massive tax increases or cutting entitlements in order to deal with the unavaodable debt bomb.

280 Trump is selling his voters out. His "Big Bullshit Bill" cuts 1/2 a days spending (but "future cuts!!!, aka shit that'll never happen). then he sends Miss Lyndsey and Da Nang Dick to Ukraine at the same time Ukraine launches an attack deep inside Russia using American Technology.
I'm glad Trump can't run again, he wouldn't get my vote a 4th time.
What Musk tried to do for the American people cost him $billions personally, and Musk has every right to be pissed off. Why not just say F it, if they aren't going to cut spending, then give the subsidies back.

Posted by: TC at June 05, 2025 03:29 PM (xLPIb)

281 Musk has been consistent about subsidies: he says there should be no subsidies for EVs but also no subsidies for oil production. He's confident that EV technology is now good enough to survive on a level playing field.

Politics is the art of the possible. I see the argument for accepting small wins we can actually get.

But I also see that there is so much horrible spending that we should never need another debt ceiling raise. Congress needs to actually cut spending before it's too late.

Note, Tesla stock price dropped on the news. I wish I had some spare money to buy the stock... I expect it to rise later this year due to robotaxi technology. NFA but I believe it.

282 There's three ways the debt like ours gets paid:
1) Default
2) Deflation
3) War, massive worldwide war.

So, if those thinking we MUST pay it off would at least say, "yeah this really, really shitty thing that is going to be really, really shitty for almost everyone for a really, really long time is a damned good idea" then we can get on with it.

Even if we cut $1 trillion from the budget, that just means we're not borrowing a trillion dollars--it doesn't free up a trillion dollars to pay the debt.

The big picture includes illegal immigration, voter integrity, eliminating DEI and trans activism.

289 272 At this juncture, I could give two shits about the debt.
---
It's the stupidest of stupid things to get stupid over.

It ain't getting paid back. I just don't understand how anyone can think that.

At best--as best!--we can lower interest rates, grow the economy and manage it to scale it back where we can breathe a little.

But it ain't getting paid.

Nor would you want to pay off the debt. Having nations around the world holding US. Bonds is neccesary to keep the US. Dollar as the world's reserve currency.

290 IDK- they’re both showmen and hucksters (no insult intended). The whole kerfuffle seems just a bit too WWF to me,

291 Perhaps Trump should hire Bondi's Dancing Influencers to push the "Big Bullshit Bill". They could dance on the Capitol steps waving empty binders full of non-existent spending cuts. It worked so well for the Epstein files.

Posted by: TC at June 05, 2025 03:56 PM (xLPIb)

292 Musk is right.
The USA cannot go on spending like it is. It's potentially existential.

This is a fight Trump should pick. I think he has the sway to send any of the RINOs to the unemployment line, but, the longer he tries to manage that situation his influence diminishes.

I think he should also be forcing those opposed to cuts to defend their position publicly. In the open most of this spending is indefensible and taxpayers must be made to feel like they are being ripped off.

293 Honestly, I only figured Trump would pull it off for the entire four years with the aid of Musk and other 'financially secure' like minded individuals - and Steven Miller, of course.

And where does that leave Musk's people as feds, assigned to do specific jobs? Without those people as a sort of broad Federal watchdog organization, we can forget ever reining in any spending, any dangerous programs, any half witted healthcare system, etc.

Also see 36, above.
Truth.

Not just the older white dems are in danger from their party. When the blinders fall, it'll be too late.

Yeah, I'm one of the fools who believed "We Won't get Fooled Again."

294 Forget it Elon, it's DC.

295 New party? We don’t have parliamentary politics here, Elon, and we don’t do run-off elections. We cannot have a third party, unless it cannibalizes one of the other two, and I mean immediately.

297 #295 The Uniparty holds that that over our heads. "You can't challenge me... you will only split votes between me and your new candidate and hand power to your political enemies." So they act like they can do whatever they want and we have to just take it. Is it so bad it's worth it now? I dunno, but it's... bad.

298 FFS.

I witnessed the stunningly sorry care of my mother and sister in Florida, including by State administered Peer Programs & assisted living facilities, during the Scott/Bondi reign.

How many Floridians stole from parents, other relatives, and charges in their responsibility when it came to SS, pensions, and possessions, and also made shady deals to stash them into "nursing homes" & private boarding facilities?

Too many to prosecute in the required "timely manner."

There are no gods and goddesses running the government.

299 "There was another story about her trying to get hired by The View. They never even bothered to call her back, those racists!"

Imagine being rejected by The View because you aren't sharp enough. That hurts.
