From near-the-end of yesterday's tech thread, is this comment of mine:
--- @FenelonSpoke, OkJohn, sock_rat_eez, m, and NR Pax: Thank you for the prayers for my Mom. They've assessed her and it looks like a valve issue in the heart which can be fixed with an endoscopic procedure (they'll go up through a major vein or artery and perform microsurgery that way.) Bottom line: Not immediately life threatening, but serious enough. I told her to agitate seriously for getting the surgery done sooner rather than later, because our health system up here will absolutely put you off for years if they think they can get away with it. (I'll be advocating on her behalf too if need be, and that might well be the case, and I am not put off easily.) --- Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant/ at June 05, 2025 05:38 AM (O7YUW) 46

@41/Pixy Misa: "Not entirely coincidental but predates the current frenzy by.... A bit."
At the beginning of one of my later years in my undergraduate degree (back in '89 or '90) I had the first day of a course on "AI". It was so much fluff and wishful thinking that I was completely turned off by the topic (and remain so today.) My next lecture (on formal verification of computer code) was in the same hall. In walks the professor, sees the previous professor has left a slide on the overhead projector, lifts it up for all to see, and starts the lecture by saying, "I just want you all to know before we begin this semester that I disagree with everything this woman has to say." Then he threw the slide in the trash. He and I got along just fine. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant/ at June 05, 2025 05:52 AM (O7YUW) 59

Got a call back from my oldest friend yesterday evening. He's getting ready for a surgery next week to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck. Problems with getting his disability money too. I suggested he look for a lawyer, or some agency that helps with that. Aren't there some pro bono organizations that assist seniors with such things?
As for me, my doctor is not worried about the mild hernia I've developed. He's sent me a referral to a local surgeon whom his nurse wife, who works at the big hospital ER on my side of the river, thinks is really good. I'm waiting for the surgeon's office to call me. So far, so good. IN the meantime, my dr. says, no problem with activity, but skip the situps and crunches for now. Noooo problem. Bought EndNote yesterday to try to wrestle some 5000 journal articles in my collection into some coherent organization. It's pretty slick. I'm working through the SciFinder articles and all I have to do is copy the DOI, paste it into Google Scholar, hit the "Cite" link and choose EndNote. And there it is. It can be exported to an Excel file later on as well. All I can say is, thank God I have my penny-ante LLC. All kinds of stuff ends up being deductible at tax time. Including the cost of the license for this platform. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 05, 2025 06:40 AM (QnmlO) 82

I don't know if theirs article was written by AI or a "journalist":
"The driver was traveling east on Highway 24 at 11:59 p.m.. They failed to maintain their lane, overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. GSP said the vehicle began to rotate clockwise and then struck a concrete culvert. That's when the car tripped and overturned before striking a metal beam in the ground, completely splitting the engine block from the car. The vehicle came to an "uncontrolled rest" on the north side of Highway 24." Posted by: fd at June 05, 2025 06:45 AM (vFG9F) 85

>My fear is that she gets captured--willingly or otherwise--and the West is ordered to release a bazillion Hamas-niks to secure her return.
--- she's Sweden's problem hey, maybe when Hamas captures her, she can do that 'how DARE you' bit see how that works out Posted by: Don Black at June 05, 2025 07:27 AM (AOsQT) 106
Stretching, coffee, hot food, and a short pipe session, plus an ibuprofen, are doing wonders for my neck. The shower should help too.

I've been waiting to get a procedure done that I hope will clear up some issues I've developed swallowing.
It did make much news but here in Brevard County Fl, One of the three major hospitals closed down in May. Just shut the doors. Now people are scrambling to try and get referrals to doctors at the other hospital. Get this, the new owner decided to close the hospital because it was "old" and the operating expenses were too high, so they just shut it down without another facility available. There are thousands of people that this has affected not to mention the 900 employees. Posted by: pawn at June 05, 2025 07:34 AM (PkPf+) 110
I haven’t heard that Dark Forest song in forever.
I’m not even sure if I’ve seen the video before. I do recall enjoying it when it was on the radio though. They reminded me of Engima, especially ‘Sadeness (Part 1)’, which was also popular at the time. Thanks, pixy. THis is what the new owners had to say about closing the hospital:
""Construction of a new hospital within the region may take several years, which is longer than our experts feel Rockledge Hospital can realistically remain open," Orlando Health said. "Rockledge Hospital is profitable, but the facility was purchased in poor condition, and does not meet our standards for patient-care environments." They weren't making enough money so thousands of people are now screwed. This is ridiculous. Posted by: pawn at June 05, 2025 07:42 AM (PkPf+) 113
Cockies are a lot of fun, although I have to be stern with them since they can be hard on other garden birds.
They really love bits of white bread and Jatz biscuits. Posted by: Bruce of Newcastle at June 05, 2025 08:56 PM (5ML5K) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0258 seconds. |
