The True American, also titled The Bummers (meaning a bum or vagrant), implies that the subjects of the painting are coarse, non-thinking citizens. The cropped sign above the door reads "The National Hotel." The mindless male figures, one of whom reads the newspaper "The True American," present only their backsides, with heads concealed, as does the depicted horse at left, and the dog at right. 53 Perry:

"On the eve of the American Civil War, Perry moved back to New Orleans and opened a studio in 1860. He painted a portrait of Senator John Slidell and the signing the Ordinance of Secession of Louisiana by early 1861. Later in 1861 Perry completed a portrait of Jefferson Davis posed before a map of the Confederate States of America, which was raffled off at a fair with the proceeds benefiting the southern war effort." (Wiki)

I'm curious to know where he lived in the city in those days. A lot of the center of NO hadn't been drained yet, and there was little settlement on the southern shore of the lake; so his choices were more limited than today.

Apparently he moved to Honolulu in the 1860s, and then later to NYC , where he died in 1915.

62 I admire the artistry displayed in the painting but had no idea what the point of the scene was. Turns out it is a slam at 1870s low information voters (lazy and content in their ignorance) who are messing up reconstruction after the Civil War.

Perry did some wonderful landscapes and many portraits of common people in everyday situations. Reminds me of some of the 18th century Dutch painters in that way. I wonder if he was an influence on Norman Rockwell. It has that vibe.

Enoch Wood Perry American

ca. 1874, On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 758

Perry painted this oil in preparation for a widely distributed chromolithograph that uses humor to mock the impossible ideal of national unity. Ohio Department of Youth Services, the high court tossed out a decision by a federal appeals court that dismissed Marlean Ames' case because she failed to clear a higher bar applied to members of a majority group in order for her employment discrimination case to proceed. The justices concluded that a "background circumstances" requirement cannot be squared with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The background circumstances rule required plaintiffs who are members of a majority group to put forth more evidence showing that their employer is "unusual" because it discriminates against the majority. Ames had argued that the requirement unfairly imposed a higher burden on her as a heterosexual woman.

The ruling from the Supreme Court makes it easier to pursue claims of reverse discrimination in 20 states and the District of Columbia that are covered by federal courts of appeals that still applied the standard." (cbsnews.com)

Ames worked for the Ohio Youth Services for years. She got a new boss who was a lesbian. She applied for a promotion in a different department and not only didn't get the job she was demoted and another lesbian got the job she wanted and a gay guy was hired to replace her.

She sued saying she was discriminated against because she was straight. She lost because of some bizarre ruling that said a majority group had to show "background circumstances" basically saying she need to prove that her employer had a history of discriminating against the majority group.

SC said LOL GFY you lower court morons and take your background circumstances and shove it.

Understand why this was allowed for so long, and you can understand the actual interests that run the system. Allowing illegals to pay lower in-state tuition makes them more easily eligible for student loans. It had the effect of increasing both University enrollment and University income, which of course the Universities greatly desired. They were the interest group which primarily advocated for this policy, and they have always been heavily tied in to the Texas Legislature.

So it really was not about illegals, it has always been about universities gaming the system for their own benefit.

NEW — Karine Jean-Pierre is getting TRASHED by her former colleagues after her announcement that she's fed-up with partisan politics and going "independent."
According to one person who worked with KJP, she "was one of the most ineffectual and unprepared people I've ever worked with...

"They went on to say that "she had meltdowns after any interview..."

"She didn't know how to manage a team...created more problems than she solved..."

Others commented that her book release is nothing more than a grift: "It's difficult to see how this is anything but a bizarre cash grab."
Apparently her colleagues were spending more time "coddling and appeasing her" than doing actual work in the White House comms shop.
She just lost ALL of her friends & allies — if she had any in the first place.
One former White House adviser went as far as to plainly call her "dumb.

Dems finally say the quiet part out loud: They want MORE welfare and HIGHER taxes in this country.
This might be the most batsh*t crazy thing I've ever heard on TV.

Dude, do you even know any Democrats?

277 257 No. That's just the recommended planning factor for an attacking force to be successful. You need troops to attack and fix a target, and other troops to maneuver around and flank.

Miller's points are well worth reading, probably before any follicles are sacrificed.

So if I read Miller’s article correctly, it comes down to tax cuts for the individual and corporate entities vs reducing government debt ? An either/or, but not both situation?

Yea, I'm not as down on the BBB as most people. It's a compromise so of course it contains shit I'd rather it didn't. But Trump has a tiny majority in the House and Senate and both are filled with GOPe backstabbing cockheads. And to those screeching about the CBO scoring ... gimme a break, it's the fucking CBO. Almost as bad as the Fed when it comes to partisan hackery.

Mostly it comes down to the requirement that the CBO pretends that the bill will have no ancillary effects so their scoring is wrong, as is always the case.

My take on The Triple B is that-

We take the win, small as it is and keep moving forward.

Every time the Dims go to DefCon 5 over something Trump does, they lose credibility and political capital with the American People,

simply because the world doesn't end and we don't all die and even those who hate Trump can see that they benefit.

That allows movement forward on the next steps.

Yeah, a titanic, head-smashing, Democrat Party obliterating instant victory would be nice but-

eh, we gotta live in the real world.

Besides, tax breaks get more people onboard with us and I'm all for that.

YMMV.
