Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Polls, Schmolls: Trump Rises on Huge Boost in Consumer Confidence and National MoodAccording to Morning Consult's poll, there has been a 9-point swing in voters' approval of Trump's trade policy in just two weeks.Trade sentiment improves: For the first time since March, more voters approve than disapprove of Trump's handling of trade policy (47% to 45%). Voters remain closely divided over whether they approve of Trump's handling of the economy or trust Republicans over Democrats to deal with the matter. This increase is not a fluke. We know that because of optimism about the economy. Consumer confidence had been dropping over the past couple of months, again due to uncertainty about Trump's trade policies. In May it skyrocketed, far outstripping expectations. InteractivePolls InteractivePolls The Experts (TM) guessed that consumer confidence would come in at 87.5 for May, but instead it hit 98 -- the biggest one-month gain in four years. For the first time in Rasmussen's polling history -- but remember, they've only been around for 15 years -- a majority of Americans now say the US is on "the right track." That's big. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Trump has never done a live Oval Office speech about his trade or economic policy. In fact, I can't remember him ever doing an Oval Office address to voters. He's a very strong communicator. He really needs to start using one of his most potent weapons to quietly, calmly, and rigorously make his case on tariffs to the public. If he's already about about parity on the question, an Oval Office address would put him well over a majority. Duane Patterson rounds up some additional findings about Democrats losing the country as they become The Antifa and Groomer Party.

Trump needs to communicate what’s happening with the rescission of funds from the DOGE cuts. Congress already pussied out on some of the major things they could do with the BBB, including selling out to the Blue State Republicans and the SALT a-holes (which btw it looks like the senate is going to cut, can’t wait for reconciliation on that one). Anyway the WH dropped the ball on rescission, because they need to initiate it. A lot of people don’t understand what Musk is talking about or how that process works. Trump needs to clean it up.

An already confusing situation is made more confusing in this cycle by the House "creatively" configuring what are clearly policy/discretionary spending items (border barriers for example) as germane under reconciliation by making them recurring spending.
Most DOGE stuff is clearly within the discretionary category, so BBB (unless some legerdemain is exercised) doesn't touch it. As noted by others here, rescission is the name of the next game. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Trump has never done a live Oval Office speech about his trade or economic policy. In fact, I can't remember him ever doing an Oval Office address to voters.
He has hosted economic policy meetings in the White House with all the relevant cabinet secretaries and others in the administration who enact his programs. There was one meeting of business leaders from all walks, committing to invest billions to MAGA. Of course, legacy media does not feature these events. I don’t even know if FOX does. Posted by: ace at May 28, 2025 05:28 PM (KRtlO) -- -- I've thought for a few months that Trump should do a Ross Perot type infomercial presentation from the Oval Office to explain what the past several decades of free trade have done to our economy, why it isn't really "free" trade, and how he plans to use tariffs and other tools to reverse this. He could also give a pep talk about the Big Beautiful Bill and speak about reducing the national debt by cutting all the waste & fraud, cutting useless programs, while also being able to keep his 2017 tax cuts and add new ones. Since Trump has rarely done a formal Oval Office speech (he did have one in January of 2019 about the Border Wall), it should garner some interest. What causes consumer confidence to increase? Low interest rates and a lack of inflation. But also:
1) Deceased perception that a war will occur. 2) lower energy prices. 3) A feeling of stability, that someone is in charge. 4) Improved security (i.e. broken windows policies) 5) A feeling the rules matter and will be enforced. Stopping illegal immigration, cold, in its tracks, services may of these issues. Laws are being enforced, and better still, destabilizing influences are being removed. Yet they do have the ability, resources and wherewithal to flood the airwaves. They want to shutter NPR. Turn it into Trump radio. Why? Speaker Johnson says Congress will do that. (So why do I not believe him?)
Duncanthrax might say that it's because the the cynicism to tender years ratio that is out-of-proportion for many commenters has been absorbed through contact. Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 28, 2025 06:27 PM (0sNs1) Posted by: MANFRED the Heat Seeking OBOE at May 28, 2025 06:28 PM (QTgUD) 157
I think it's time to admit that the Trump Admin isn't going to initiate any recission anything. Senate will nip and tuck here and there and we'll get a giant turd.

Speaker Johnson says Congress will do that. (So why do I not believe him?)
Duncanthrax might say that it's because the cynicism to tender years ratio that is wildly out-of-proportion for many commenters here has been absorbed through osmosis. Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 28, 2025 06:33 PM (0sNs1) 159
Well, that was weird.

133 I'm no good with posting crap but check out the vids of the village of Blatten, Switzerland. It was evacuated last week and earlier today part of a mountain and glacier collapsed and an avalanche buried the village. Scary stuff
Posted by: Smell the Glove a -------------- Saw part of the evacuation, - they were airlifting cattle with helicopters. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at May 28, 2025 06:55 PM (tRs7o) 161

In Trump’s first term, consumer confidence was high, his policies were bringing millions of dollars back from overseas investments, his quarterly GDP growth was greater than Obama’s annual rates. Rather than just compete, the economy was trashed in order to undo all the gains he had created.

110 27 2) The Richmond suburbs are what has propelled Virginia into the Dem column, not NOVA.
This is fascinating to me, as a NoVa denizen. I've just taken it for granted that NoVa is what puts Dems over the top in our statewide races, but I've never bothered to look at the data. >> also the goddam cheating. Abigail 'won' her race 10 days later after sufficient vote 'cleansing' and lawsuits. -WFM Posted by: Washington Nearsider, still gloating at May 28, 2025 05:32 PM (oSeBJ) You're not wrong. NoVa is wildly blue. It's just that Richmond is, too, but it wasn't always NoVa level blue...and Richmond's become more blue while NoVa hasn't trended further (b/c it was already so blue - I mean, how do you get more blue than 90-10 in Arlington?)... Also a NOVA resident. NOVA stays blue because they keep importing govt 'worker' fucks, and illegals. The brain-dead libs with something to lose move to Richmond, which isn't as fucked as is NOVA simply because of the ratio, but still vote the same way. I miss the Virginia I moved to (from NY) 35 years ago. Hi Weasel! Hi Bluebell! I'll make a MoMe one of these days... ![]() Posted by: WaitingForMartel at May 28, 2025 11:50 PM (ERbou) 164
