Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 25, 2025 04:37 AM (dhwdC) - During the Corona crackdown here in Israel, there was a point that they issued a law that only vehicles which "MUST" be on the road are allowed to travel. We decided to head from Jerusalem to our Tranquility Base up north. We shut our phones off, triple wrapped them in foil, and placed them in a tin box for the ride. Of course our car is being tracked and the highways are full of cams running on plate ID software. But the effort made me feel better. I met with a woman yesterday who lost her husband to covid at age 50. She bears Fauci some ill-will, but has stayed silent because the prevailing opinion has been that China was responsible, either the wet market or, more recently, because of poor lab security. But now she tells friends she thinks the man who designed the experiment, funded the research, and hired the lab with notoriously poor security... well, he might bear some responsibility for her early widowhood.

Evening and morning to all on this Sunday!
Meant to sleep until 4:30; woke at 3:15; dozed until 4:00 amid a dream about someone running with me on a track for *ninety minutes* (something I've never done in real life). My legs in the dream were bright red. As I'd guess they might well be. Little Dagny La Siberienne slept with me last night and was still curled next to me when I woke up. An episode of The Invaders is on MeTV. If nothing else, the show is fun to look at for the 1967-68 Fords they used. In a scene just now, a four-door sedan comes to a stop in a forest, and the front and back *rock* for several seconds after the car no longer moves forward. Suspensions sure have changed. No doubt that's why every vehicle nowadays makes sure you "feel the road."

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius '60s cars for the most part were body on frame while modern cars are unibody. This change eliminated much of the bouncy body roll and allows manufacturers to tune the suspension of modern cars with much greater precision. If I recall properly, Mercedes at some point was tuning their unibodies to a certain frequency to get optimal performance out of them. G&R, it turns out that on my Mac, typing &udm=14 after search terms in the search bar sometimes doesn't get rid of the AI overview. Sometimes, but sometimes not. But clicking "Web" (sometimes hiding under "More") after a search removes the non-Web hits. I found this "work-around" (I guess) in a Hacker News thread.

Or maybe that was a slightly earlier generation and the most recent ones were unibody. My late and much-loved W126 Mercedes (the sedan that Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson trash in Die Hard III) allowed me to be aware of the road in a very pleasant way in Colorado, where they actually pave roadways and streets. Here, the setup was unpleasant. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 25, 2025 05:44 AM (omVj0) 53

"This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." I much prefer this version over the "... we will rejoice and be glad in it." alternate. Why? * familiarity -- the "let us" version was used in the Morning Prayer service with which I grew up in the Episcopal Church in the time before it decided to go all hip and relevant; but more importantly, * free will -- the "we will" version is an imperative, a command, while the "let us" version acknowledges that it is each person's choice to "... rejoice and be glad in it". An observant follower of the LORD will seek out and find ways to rejoice and to be glad in accordance with His other teachings (e.g., the Great Commandment). Re AI nonsense: Claude seems nice (in the same tone as reading an article about a crazed axe murderer and someone sarcastically comments, "He seems nice.")
Those who have read Frank Herbert's books in his "Dune" series will know the cautionary tale behind the event known as the "Butlerian Jihad" and the commandment that that was codified in the (fictitious) "Orange Catholic Bible": "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." Back to reality for a moment: Formed in our creator's image, we also enjoy creating, but I think there's a parallel point we will experience the same regret with our creation as God reached with humanity (see Genesis 6: 6-7). That makes him the first Israeli (and maybe Jew, not sure) to win the pole at the Indy 500. He's a Russian-Israeli, so guessing born in Russia and now claims Israel as home. I'm guessing on that. He's a rookie in the IndyCar series and the team he's on is new. An Italian team that mostly raced in the feeder series that support F1. Prema, or something like that.

*sighs* I had to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini, because Assistant hasn't worked properly with the Waze application (GPS and driving map) for a while.
Just spent several minutes restricting what it could do in the settings for Gemini, as much as I could, restricting its use to only when the phone is unlocked, NO screen capturing or screen context, no contact information shared from other signed in devices, Google Assistant restricted to "while driving" (Google Maps and Waze), Personal results turned off, Broadcast turned off, App info from other devices turned off. Routines have not been set up (yet) and I might or might not choose to use those later. Stay in your lane, Gemini. I only want you for Waze for voice commands, and nothing else at this time. But I suspect Google's still listening to me all the time now. Because that's what they do. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at May 25, 2025 07:10 AM (O7YUW) 113

Posted by: Tired of working at May 25, 2025 *** A lot of places, cities usually, have down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. Evansville, IN, does. I expect the catch there is that you have to live in the home yourself, and stay in it for at least five years or so. But an extra 10K or so toward the down payment would be very nice if you like the area enough to live there for a good while. I really don't understand what people are doing with these AI's, I use numerous LLM's everyday for research and development, never had one threaten to kill me or go bonkers, I have had to fight with them to produce exactly what I want, but that can usually be resolved by buying it some top shelf Scotch.

I don't think WV pays you to move there. They didn't when I moved there in 1993. It's an impoverished place, except where it isn't. Which isn't a lot of places. There's a bold line between those that are poor and everyone else... and there's a lot of poor people in WV.
That said, I still own property there. My wife's from WV and still have family there. There are quiet, rural spots that are within an hour of modern amenities... but most of them are already taken. And although WV traditionally has been a Dem stronghold, the state overwhelmingly voted for Trump in the last 3 elections. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 25, 2025 08:45 AM (Q4IgG) 204

If you are considering moving to W Va I would encourage you to look at parts of the adjoining states with similar topographies.
There is a lot to be said for SE Ohio, SW Pa, parts of KY, the mountain area of VA and the panhandle of MD. Best to go with the states that are not dominated by a large metropolitan population. The area near the Ohio river always impressed me as being full of riff-raff though. W Va just sucks balls. It's a tradition there. Posted by: pawn at May 25, 2025 08:50 AM (QB+5g) 212

--------- Generally, the roads everywhere in WV are shit. The weather takes a toll on them, there's not a lot of tax monies to maintain them even though state taxes in WV are (to me) high. But there are exceptions. And I would never, ever consider living near any city in WV. "Head for the hills." Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 25, 2025 08:50 AM (Q4IgG) 214

The Toledo War sounds like a snoozefest
Both states deployed militias on opposite sides of the Maumee River near Toledo, but besides mutual taunting, there was little interaction between the two forces. The single military confrontation of the war ended with a report of shots being fired into the air, incurring no casualties. The only blood spilled was the non-fatal stabbing of a law enforcement officer. Posted by: Savage Henry at May 25, 2025 09:01 AM (AOsQT) 228
