Woman Stunned to See Grandparent’s Wartime Locket Online After Stranger Buys it in Thrift Shop to Find Owner

doof-wartime-locket.jpg

From Canada comes the story of a lost family heirloom finding its way home in the most bizarre series of circumstances.

Kelly Brown, a member of the Aurora post of the Royal Canadian Legion, sat at her home last week in shock: staring at what appeared to be a black-and-white photograph of her grandparents smiling out from the inside of a locket; the subject of a post on Facebook.

The post’s author, Alison Anne, said she had found and bought the locket at a thrift shop after recognizing the man in the photo was connected to the Royal Canadian Air Force, and wanted to know if anyone had a clue as to its original owner; a simple, selfless act that against all odds, paid off.

“Little lost for words,” Brown said, remembering the instant she realized it was her grandparents in the locket. “Just it’s such a surreal, cool moment. The power of social media doing something good.”

More at the link. Cool story.

Enhanced Games AKA ‘Olympics on Steroids’ to Be Held Next Year in Las Vegas

Ever wondered how much better top human athletes could be if they were allowed to use performance-enhancing substances in competitions? Well, in May of next year, these questions will be answered, as the first edition of Enhanced Games kicks off. Marketed as an event designed to remove the stigma of using PEDs and to safely push the limits of human athletic performance, Enhanced Games has rightly been nicknamed the “Olympic Games on Steroids”. Originally announced as a concept in 2023, the Enhanced Games will host its first ever edition in May of next year, in las Vegas, with eight different events in swimming (50- and 100-meter races in freestyle and butterfly), track (100-meter sprint and 100/110-meter hurdles) and weightlifting (snatch, clean and jerk).

“We are here to move humanity forward, the old rules didn’t just hold back athletes, they held back humanity,” Aron D’Souza, Enhanced Games president and founder, said during a lavish presentation on the stage of a club on the Las Vegas Strip.

***

Enhanced Games has already received millions of dollars in funding from venture capitalists like PayPal founder Peter Thiel, Christian Angermayer and Donald Trump Jr, as co-founder of 1789 Capital. Although D’Souza has not disclosed all his sources of funding, he did reveal that his company plans to make money by selling direct-to-consumer performance enhancers, in a model similar to that of Red Bull, which sponsors all sorts of extreme sporting events to market its energy drinks.

Although anti-doping agencies see Enhanced Games as a “clown show” that puts profits over principle, D’Souza claims that the current anti-doping rules are outdated, and his idea is a better alternative. Nutrition and technology already play a big role in all major sports, giving distinct advantages to athletes and organizations who can afford to invest in them, so why should PEDs be any different? Instead of what many are calling a broken anti-doping system, putting these performance-enhancing drugs front and center for the entertainment of the masses is a much better idea.

Sure - why not? At least they're honest about the stuff the athlete's are taking.

'Ette Couture (Courtesy of Piper)

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------

This month we were treated to multiple events with Melania and Usha. On May 20, Melania hosted the “Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” event in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden. Children from the President’s executive office staff decorated wooden American Flags as part of Melania’s BE BEST children’s initiative. Melania looked perfect for a garden event in a Dolce & Gabbana white shirt and Michael Kors Collection blurred floral print duchesse satin pencil skirt in moss green The skirt is still available at Neiman Marcus, but only a few sizes are left so hurry!

IMG_4158r.jpg

IMG_4179r.jpg

On May 21, Melania hosted the Senate Spouses Luncheon at the National Gallery of Art. A quick hijack- my stepbrother had his wedding reception at the National Gallery of Art. Our limo driver dropped us off. We went in, we were ushered through security in lightening speed. We were wondering why there was security. We look around, everyone is speaking Spanish. Okay…well…my stepmother is Cuban. Then a mariachi band starts playing. My dad frantically texts us asking where we are. Y’all. We were at the Mexican Embassy, and the president was having some big shindig that we crashed. We can only assume we were let in and treated with reverence like we were because my ex-husband was in his dress blues with all his ribbons everywhere. We exited stage left and made it to the art gallery with another “you won’t believe this” story.

Back to fashion, the Senate Spouses Luncheon and Melania. If you ever sat and wondered if shoes really matter, oh boy do they. Melania wore a Dolce & Gabbana wool pencil skirt and single breasted jacket in ivory. She paired it with a Dolce & Gabbana silk shirt in chocolate. Kind of neutral, right? Then we get to the shoes… Manolo Blahnik BB Cow Print Pointed Pumps and swoon!

IMG_4180r.jpg

IMG_4162r.jpg

Second Lady Usha Vance was also in attendance. She chose a beautiful Badgley Mischka Asymmetric Draped Crepe Dress in Royal Blue. She paired it with silver pumps, but there isn’t a clear enough picture to identify who they were by.

IMG_4181r.jpg

IMG_4163r.jpg

Usha was absolutely stunning and perfect for the Inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV. She wore an Alexia Admor Riley Flutter Sleeve Sheath Dress in black with Manila Blahnik Skiotto Leather Pumps, also in black. She wore her favorite Ray Ban Club Master sunglasses in shiny gold / black as well.

IMG_4182r.jpg

IMG_4183r.jpg

Trend alert 🚨! Cut out dresses and shirts are going to be a thing this summer, which may lead to interesting tan lines. Ivanka wore a super cute example in this Lillie knit minidress by Cult Gaia. We will feature more of this in a future edition of ‘Ette Couture.

50 Bride of PI picked The Last Rifleman for our movie date this weekend.

It is a pretty good "veterans" movie, and it did get very dusty in our house several times despite the windows being closed.

It is deliberately slow paced to gradually unreel the story. The story lines is a bit embellished, but based on a true story.

Pierce Brosnan does a masterful job in the lead - when he is a 70 year old IRL.

For anyone that is a Brosnan fan, I think you would definitely enjoy the movie.

Wasn't it wonderful to "see" your Mom again?

I have been working from home for the last several weeks and just let my beard grow out untrimmed. Picked up the electric razor a few days ago, looked up into the mirror and saw my father! He let his beard go wild several times in his last few years since he had a terrible tremor.

My face wasn't exactly the same, but my beard was!

93 Cow print shoes, definitely not a fan. Ditto on cutouts. Both ladies look lovely, regardless! Usha seemed overdressed for a luncheon, only because it looked more like a cocktail dress to me, but, she, too, looked beautiful!

Memorial Day is always somber for me, which suited our soggy weather. 9 inches in the last 30 hours, on top of 15 inches week before last. Am postponing graveyard visits til we dry out some, but there were lots of ceremonies around here. One feels so incredibly grateful, and humbled, as well.

I'm told the little Yankee soldier's grave was attended to, as per our rural custom. We are several hours from any battle site, and no one knows how he got here, but we fuss over his grave, and make sure it looks nice, because he was somebody's son, and that's how Southern folk do. God rest his soul.

Though if you pair it with fabric that "wicks," it could keep its tobacco lit.

123 Braenyard,

Did you ever read up on how much DNA fragment contamination there was in the MRNA "vaccine"?

I believe they got approval under one manufacturing process, and then produced the MRNA "vaccine" in volume using a rougher process. (That is a BS certification, by the way.)

With that many DNA fragments introduced into our cells via the lipid nanoparticle coatings, there is no way for the science establishment to state with certainty that it can't enter the nucleus.

Further, we do not have a good grasp on reverse transcription, so changes to an individual's genome are certainly possible.

By the time Pantera took the stage he was so drunk he couldn't sing, couldn't remember the lyrics to his own songs, and started repeatedly bashing himself in the forehead with his mic until he was bloody. Then he dropped to his knees and puked off the front of the stage. That was enough for us... We said F-it and left. Even Dimebag couldn't save that shit-show.

Unfortunately, people wanted to keep their non-government jobs, like my friend; she either got the clot shot (and some boosters) or she was fired from her accounting job. When you have a mortgage and bills to pay, it's a tough decision. Not joking. I'm not working, so I had more 'freedom'. I also had one thought that was never answered: If Covid-1984 was so deadly, and we have to mask up while social distancing and washing our hands a gazilion times a day, where were all the homeless bodies stacking up in the streets? Surely if there were ever a sub-population who did not mask up, social distance or wash their hands regularly that would be the homeless, right?' That was it for me. I knew they were lying to us. Didn't know all the whys and wherefores, but I knew they were lying.

235 Moki! How are you?

The tombstone says Union Soldier, Unknown. I guess at one point, it said Yankee instead of Union, but they raised money for a new one in the 50s, because Yankee could be construed as perjorative, and the locals didn't want anyone to think they would be hateful about a young boy. He was always referred to as little, so it's always been assumed he was very young.

There are a few other similar graves in the surrounding area; the other ones do have first names, but no one knows how they ended up here. If they had just settled here after the war, and died later, they'd have had full names on their stones.

But we take care of them, and they get prayed over like our local boys. And we all hope we'll eventually find out who they were, so we can let their people know they've been cared for, just as if they were our own.

236 And today I saw the ultimate ridiculous dress in a shop window. I couldn't even begin to look for an example on the net. It was big puffy pink netting )tulle?) in a wide strip to cover the breasts. They whoever wore it would have a bare midriff with a huge puffy tulle skirt that went to the knees and by puffy I mean it must have stood out from the body by about two feet . All I can think was it was an outfit for a outrageous drag queen or "transgender "show because this is a super LBGT friendly town with pride flags everywhere. I wasn't there for that . I went to a RCC church for Mass and no, I didn't not take the Eucharist. It was one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been in.

237 RickZ-- I was the same: wondering "If this crap is so deadly, where are all the bodies?"

There was so much BS being shown on teevee, and the pressure from peers at work. Although my company did not *require* the cl0tsh0t, they offered several incentive$ (not much $, but some) and seemed to be considering a requirement. We had guv contracts, after all.

If hubby hadn't gotten so ill & needed me at home, I might have succumbed to all that pressure & just taken the damned sh0t.

So very glad we didn't do it.

242 Good shop day today. Got all the underhood sheet metal on the Zip Van painted with rust-converting primer, least wise as much as I could reach with a long-handled paint brush. Replaced a fuel hose on the riding mower, and managed to get a fair swack of mowing done without it stalling out, as it had done yesterday.

Returned to the Zip Van, and removed the steering column jacket, which contains the shift linkage and turn signal switch. Managed to get that all sorted out, and painted, and it is back in the vehicle, not yet clamped in place, though.

Fair enough. Glad you cleared that up.

At the beginning, my friend was also convinced about the need for the clot shot. She researched the 'best' version for me, Moderna or J &J, considering my health conditions. For a while she didn't believe I didn't want it but then she turned. She started to see the tyranny of having drugs being required to be injected with a rushed-into-the-market drug, when she tried to get a waiver as a breast cancer survivor and on-going cancer patient. She couldn't get it. Now she's worried, like a lot of people, with no potential legal recourse.

At home, Mom was quite adamant about no peeing in the yard. I may have Hillybilly blood, but no Hillbilly urine on the suburban lawn.

One of the adbantages of youth: You can hold it for hours. Now? Not so much. For a long time I didn't pee during early grade school hours, privacy being a part of it.

Like I said, not until around 9 or 10 was I comfortable peeing in a little boys' room. Then, once you have your first beer in a bar, all bets are off anyway.

Didn't Barack give The Queen a cd or something of his speeches at some official function?

Found this:

After facing much ridicule for once giving the queen of England an iPod filled with his own speeches, President Obama went the more sentimental route for Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday.

~~~
After the iPod, first lady Michelle Obama caused consternation when she broke protocol by putting her hand on the queen’s back in 2009. Two years later, the president continued speaking through a toast after the band began playing “God Save the Queen.”
Such sticklers for protocol.
I had a few men's shirts in my personal collection & one day he borrowed one, to wear to class (college after age 40, vocational rehab, as his disability prevented continuing in construction trade)
Anyway, he'd chosen to borrow a light pink shirt, thinking it was actually white. LOL! Should've seen his face when I asked him why he grabbed one of mine? And did he realize it was PINK? (no!)
Ahhh, such a dude he was. Hahaha. RIP, D.
To this day, I hate wearing cream shirts. Give me white , please. Or a nice solid color like blue, or a candy stripe red or green. Anything that's easy to discern. I'd make a terrible interior decorator. 'This pale fuchsia will go nicely with the mauve stripes.'
384 Parallel parking is a mechanical thing that can be mastered.
You have to know the specific car you are driving and do trial and error until you've got your mark down.
The markers are the rear bumper of the front car and the spot on your car that aligns with other car's bumper. Those are your marks. When you've learned where the mark is on your car; you line them up and cut your wheel. It takes practice to know how much and when but after you've accomplished it you own it.
391 I believe that, Tammy! D had a terrific sense of perspective and design! Always amazed me, how he could visualize new possibilities for spaces, even ones already in use. I'd struggle, even with a 'blank slate.'
394 Parallel parking is a mechanical thing that can be mastered.
You have to know the specific car you are driving and do trial and error until you've got your mark down.
I'm gonna call horsehit.
One time I was out with a subordinate in Hoboken; he was driving a mini SUV type car, something I've never driven. Parking was a real bitch and we found a space after a long time circling around. He goes to parallel park and can't quite get it. After what seemed an interminable amount of attempts, I told him, get out of the car, I'll do it. He gets out and watches from the sidelines. I whipped it into the spot, easy-peasy. He knew I didn't have a car so he asked me how I did that? I told him I learned how to park a car.
Some people can parallel park, some people can't. Just like being a co-pilot in a car and reading a map: Some people can read a map, some people can't. A friend of my ex' found out she couldn't read a map when see saw her holding a map in the car upside down.
I've read where people who have multiple animals and have one die, they bring the remains back so the other animals can smell it. Then they know. I've seen that done with animals when their owner dies, too. The animal gets a peak inside the coffin at the funeral home.
We had Old cat put down at the vet's. Buried her in the front yard, under a crabapple tree, quite deeply.
Young cat yowled thru the house & back yard, but stopped after that one day, when she'd been out front. She snuffed around and stopped at the crabapple for a while. Then, came *running* back into the house.
No more yowling or peeking, after that. I wondered.
404 My sister had a couple of Persian kittuhs. Siblings, same litter. They lived a long time. When Casper died, he was blind and had kidney failure. His heart gave out though. Sister heard a loud, odd noise from Casper. Went to check, he was dead. Sophie was near by, checked on him, freaked out, and hid under the bed. Poor Sophie was traumatized. She would walk around and look at all the Casper spots in the house. Did that for about a month. Sophie lived till she was 18. Persians can live for a while. Casper was around 16.
We had an in-home experience some years back, with the Best Cat Ever. Had the vet come in the house, she set up a nice serene setting for him (and me). I had him in my arms when the euthenization occurred.
The vet pointed out to me, as he was passing the other cats. They were arrayed around him, facing outward. She said they were guarding him, as he went to the next realm, or something like that.
I believe they do live on, as beings worthy of an afterlife. This cat was my son's favorite. I believe they are reunited now.
God bless you Tammy, that is a wonderful story.
My Grt-Grandma told me of her Grandma's younger brother Peter. He enlisted from WI and died at age 17. She was telling me this because her Grandma always kept a picture of her little brother in his uniform.
I've gotten his service records, you have me inspired to go back and see if I can find where he is buried. I need to do something next Memorial Day at his gravesite if I can figure it out.
Yes, indeed. My Daddy, 2 of my older brothers, 1 ex boyfriend and my husband all taught me that very thing. And spent untold hours between them, helping me practice.
All I can say is, if I don't make it on the first try, it ain't happening. I'd say I had a 25% sucess rate. They'd probably say 10! 😂
There were bombing raids, some shot down.
We got permission (in some cases keys) to do that.
With an exception.
And as the only female out of 9 children, and most of them older than me, I promise you my theories on men not seeing pastels were developed merely from observation. I can just about see myself interrupting anything they, or my father and uncles, were doing to discuss colors.
But I shouldn't have generalized, and did not mean to offend you or any Caribbean men! Please accept my apologies for doing so.
One time while Saturday Night Live in college, late '70s, they had some black singer on. Don't remember anything except he might have been South African. He sang some sort of anti-apartheid protest song of which I only remember the refrain: "Have you heard the word? Johannesburg." The anti-apartheid propaganda was strong back then. White crosses lining a highway? Nothing to see here, move along.
Johannesburg now, like much of South Africa, is a shithole.
Power steering. Before that came along, forget it. I had my ‘64 Ford all spiffied up nice. It drove like a dream, tracked straight and turned easy. But inherent to that, str
with manual steering, the vehicle needs to be moving. Turning the wheels when stopped, you better have ate your Wheaties. I “could” parallel park it, but I made sure I never had to.
It was a real nice truck, and the nice thing about manual steering was going down gravel or dirt roads. Quiet. No PS whine, and it steered as light as a feather. I loved that truck.
I'm told the little Yankee soldier's grave was attended to, as per our rural custom. We are several hours from any battle site, and no one knows how he got here, but we fuss over his grave, and make sure it looks nice, because he was somebody's son, and that's how Southern folk do. God rest his soul."
