Computex is over for another year. (Tom's Hardware)

We got some interesting video cards that aren't for you from Intel, a video card that is for you but you don't want from Nvidia, a video card that all things considered is about as good as you're likely to get right now from AMD, and some high-end CPUs that are the price of only of a cheap second-hand car and not a new car also from AMD.

And a bunch of cases, coolers, and storage devices, and displays that go inside your computer case because RGB isn't cool enough anymore.

Also shown off were $10 10Gb Ethernet cards - a device whose time truly has come considering how long it's been since 1Gb arrived, and prototypes of PCIe 6.0, whose time definitely has not come given that PCIe 5.0 graphics cards have only been on the market for six months and for four of those you couldn't buy them anyway.

Also at Computex, major system assembler Pegatron showed off a 1 exaflop AMD computer thingy. (Tom's Hardware)

It's a full-height rack, but an exaflop in a single rack is a lot of computing power.

It's based on AMD's latest AI GPUs, and offers 36.8TB of VRAM.

I spend all my time programming - or doing programming-related work like beating my head against a wall - and I've never heard of Glitch.

Do you really need a graphics card? (Hot Hardware)

The Ryzen 5600G featured in this article is a few years old and has a similar speed to my laptop (because it's actually the same chip), and it can it can run Civilization VI at 1080p at 40 fps.

And that's running on slower DDR4 RAM. AMD's current desktop chips with integrated graphics like the 8700G are three times as fast. (And also cost twice as much.)

If you don't have a burning need to play the latest games at high resolutions, a 5600G, or its close cousins the 5500G and 5600GT, will do quite well.
Is 8GB enough for graphics cards? (Hot Hardware)

If you're buying something like the Radeon 9060 XT - which you can't just yet because it won't be out for another week - the 8GB model is a terrible purchase because some games will already fail on it at high settings, and the 16GB model is only $50 more and will last a lot longer.

And while recent graphics cards are much faster than integrated graphics, you can easily and cheaply upgrade the memory in your PC to give the integrated graphics more memory. That's the point of AMD's Ryzen 395, except they messed up and you can't upgrade the RAM.

If you have an older GPU - or you buy a $90 card like my Radeon 580 - 8GB is fine. But if you're shopping for a current model that costs over $200, don't settle for 8GB if there are any alternatives.

Yeah, any 8gb current model would be a pretty bad decision since you're already laying down so much money from the get-go.

Nvidia wise the 16GB 5060ti is showing as available on Amazon for me, and a $460-480 or so. That's probably close to MSRP and is likely the best buy right now.

The 5070ti 16GB still keeps hovering around $900+ and should be $750 MSRP. That's an absurd price but is likely the sweet spot in performance and VRAM overall.

The mother of the man, who adopted our daughter's unplanned child, a boy, eighteen years ago, died earlier this past week. Yesterday was the day for her visitation and funeral service. Mrs. KvC and I went to pay our respects (I should add that the adoption was an open one).

The minute we entered the church, I spotted our adopted grandchild's mother and older sister, who also was adopted. They were surprised and pleased to see us. Soon enough, our grandson, (the adoptee) and his father joined us and we conveyed our respects. There followed a long conversation that was pleasant and welcome under the circumstances.

All of which leads me to this. Both children of this couple have their heads on straight, are getting educated in what likely will be productive areas for employment (graphics design and architectural restoration), and are well rounded and polite young people with whom you would spend time gladly and pleasantly.

There is a great deal of what formerly was considered normal actions and normal people out in our land. They're simply not loudly insisting, "Pay attention to me, me, me!" as they live their lives.

32 Among yesterday blessings: Being able to take a walk in some beautiful gardens with FenSpouse. They ( school district ) all got an extra day off from work because there no need for a snow day. While walking over to the garden there was a lovely little blonde boy ( aged four) with his equally lovely mother. Spouse took a picture for her Later yesterday I had a nice lunch and talk with someone who's part of our church. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

This has been, and still is, a cool Spring here on the Delmarva peninsula so far.

We are spending this week at our Sussex place, working to return it to presentable status as we had not spent much time here for the past four years.

51 Semi-tech related: Yesterday I was struggling with the mouse that came with the iMac -- a "Magic" Mouse, if they had that moniker in 2013-14. It wasn't tracking easily across the screen, and I was having to make multiple movements to get it to go where I wanted.

I was about to drag out the Dell wireless mouse I bought at the start of the Sniffle Scare, replace its batteries, and see if it would work with the Mac. In the process I found a Dell mousepad and swapped it in . . . and my problem vanished. The surface of the pad I had been using was fighting the mouse and my efforts; this one lets the mouse glide.

Amazing how the hardware matters.

My 2013 Dell died a couple of years ago, and while I am pleased with the new Dell, it isn't quite as robust a build as the old one. And that one is like a delicate flower compared to previous Dell desktops.

By the way, Logitech makes an excellent wireless mouse. M705.

I have a full-size 2021 model Dell Inspiron laptop that still works well. The smaller laptop I got around the same time for travel eventually got beaten to death, but this one looks and works like new. Only bought the new desktop because it's a bit slow for some of the work I'm doing now.

I think I've learned how to tell if a story is AI generated. There's some teaser headline, "Home Depot Rival to Close Permanently". Instead of saying in the first paragraph who the rival is, the story maunders through a history of big box stores, the effect of COVID on them, the economy in general and then, maybe at the 10th paragraph, you find out it's some place you never heard of in San Francisco.

Although, Steve Burke at GamersNexus was quite impressed with their new Alienware gaming machines as they used standard-sized parts in the build after he, and many others, had been complaining about their proprietary parts for years, decades, even.

It also had decent airflow in the case and the CPU didn’t throttle as a result, unlike the previous generations that were so choked for air that an i9 ran like an i7.

Apparently Dell is finally listening to their customers and the reviews.
