  • Nvidia hates you and doesn't care if you know it. (The Verge) (archive site)

They are lying to you, and also don't care if you know it.

They still want your money, but they get enough of that from the AI slop industry so they don't care all that much.

But what they really hate is reviewers telling the truth, because if you know the truth you might not hand over your money.

Musical Interlude

This is the intro music for new Phase Connect vtuber Clio Aite - that is, she's new to Phase Connect; she's been a vtuber for years. She's an Australian (well, Irish-British-Australian but an Aussie citizen) history professor with a fanatical devotion to 4X strategy games and an endurance to match.

From the ATT article comments.
"CenturyLink already sold off most of the non-bell service areas, aka the original CenturyLink before it's merger with Qwest, a year or two ago as Brightspeed, and now they're even divesting the residential service in bell-USWest-Qwest territory." This sounds like Brightspeed DSL is a dying thing.

The ATT article I linked to earlier paints a dire situation for DSL customers in general and one that is likely to get worse. It seems months long DSL outages do occur. If you have other ISP options you might want to look into them.

45 Mozilla Kills Pocket and Fakespot

If The Google pulls the plug on subsidizing Mozilla, which is a possibility because of the anti-trust cases, how does Mozilla survive? I don't understand Mozilla's business model other than The Google gives them boatloads of money to use The Google search by default. Other browser companies, like Brave and Opera, seem to be just fine without the The Google sugar so it seems doable. I have no idea how the economics of independent browser companies works.

I suspect those are high band width 5g doodads primarily for wireless home internet. From the linked article: "T-Mobile calls its Mid- and High-Band 5G networks Ultra Capacity 5G. These signals offer faster speeds and more capacity than Extended Range 5G. However, they have a shorter coverage range...The 5G UC icon on your phone’s status bar means you’re connected to T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity 5G network."

Okay, enough of the exclamation points. I'm up, I'm sipping coffee and wearing a robe, what more d'ya want.

My oldest friend, the fellow I sent the birthday books to, called me yesterday and we talked for an hour. He's had medical issues, diverticulitis and now a pinched nerve in his neck which apparently needs surgery, etc. -- but he is remarkably upbeat and positive. He loves Clearwater, says he's not experienced any hurricane strikes (I guess the west coast of FL doesn't get them as often as the upper Gulf Coast and TX), and tried to convince me to move there. It's not likely; I'm trying to get *away* from humidity, bugs, and hurricanes. And he admits it's expensive, too.

97 U.S. participation in the next America's Cup sailing race is in doubt citing "transparency issues" involving defending champion New Zealand's deal with the Italian government to host the next Cup in Naples.

The British sailing team is also calling on New Zealand to cough up the details.

It would be the first time a U.S. boat would be absent in the event.

That would be unfortunate.

The New York Yacht Club's boat, American Magic, is based here in Pensacola. I see it once in awhile when I'm out on my boat.

How much is Cox charging you for internet access? Their web page shows 500Mbs w/ 1.25TB data is $90.00 + stuff and 500Mbs w/ no cap is $110.00 + stuff. Starlink has a deprioritized service at $80.00 and the regular service at $120; both are without a data cap and I am not sure about taxes/fees.

My Verizon wireless home internet is 300Mbs unlimited data and costs $35.00 w/o taxes/fees. This is a discount rate because I have Verizon cell service. In all I pay $130 all in for the two.

I didn't see the "deprioritized" service on Starlink's website. $80 would be nice. I'm paying $106 a month, not sure what my level is; considering taxes, it's probably the lower one you mention.

119 @100/Boss Moss: "Does opening up and cleaning a laptop keyboard ever fix it?"

I've never gone as deep as to try to disassemble a laptop's keyboard to attempt to clean it. While it's theoretically possible, the chances of breaking switches and making things worse would just have me buying a replacement keyboard from the manufacturer or reseller, and swapping it in for the malfunctioning one. (Lenovo Thinkpads make replacement of the keyboard really easy compared to other manufacturers.)

Also: Opening up a laptop (more getting it back together correctly) without breaking any clips or components, is always such an adventure.

I despise doing service work or repair on laptops, if you couldn't tell.

After a bit of back and forth discussions, one of the managers copied me on an email telling the woman helping me to go ahead and send me the replacement part for free since I'd purchased it through Amazon. I emailed him back to say thank you and he admitted that he copied me by accident.

Still getting a replacement part. But the wife and I decided that we're getting a better quality coffeemaker the next time something happens.

Can't say I have much affection for invalidity studies anyway. If I do a novelty study and nothing turns up, everyone is happy. If I do an invalidity search and nothing turns up, everyone is irritated with me.

Less than 24 hours later, the package was miraculously found and arrived at the office it was supposed to go to.

145 Back in the day, I used to work for Bell-Northern Research/Nortern Telecom/Nortel/Nortel Networks/(or whatever other names they dreamed up for the same damned company). (I was one of the last US layoffs in 2009, joining BNR in 1995.)

In the rush to save costs, some development was shifted overseas. NETAS (Turkish company) and TATA (Indian company with a giggity name) were the two we used.

NETAS was OK; they learned how to do things and didn't have gigantic turn-over. TATA was a fucking disaster. Anyone worth a shit left to work for someone else. There was one case where the TATA team was given task to develop a piece of software; they weren't up to it. The US team (to make a development deadline) wrote the code for them, attached the files to an email with instructions to check that code in. The TATA engineers printed out the email, printed out the attachments, typed in the attached code by hand, and submitted the change.

They made typos when typing in the code and didn't bother to check.

I'm not management track (I had enough of that shit in the Army), but I asked the US team lead what the fuck he was doing trying to act as if TATA was worth paying.

Starlink is much better for those who need internet in rural areas who have no other choice than DSL or other satellite internet.

If you’re in a town or city, then coaxial cable, or fiber are a much better choice for reliability and much shorter latency.

Starlink can go out on you in bad storms/heavy cloud cover just like satellite TV.

And while Starlink has lower latency than other satellite internet because the mini-satellites they use orbit much closer to the planet it still has longer send/receive times than any cable.

Which probably isn’t a big deal to most people other than gamers but the latency is there, and you’ll notice it for certain things like video load times.
