The End of The Universe Could Come 'Much Sooner' Than We Thought
A new calculation of the end of the Universe suggests that the end of all things will come a lot sooner than our previous calculations indicated.Only 10^78 years? Better get on that honeydo list.
Once the Hawking-like radiation emitted by everything in the Universe is taken into account, the functional end of the Universe is a mere 1078 years hence. Okay, so humanity will well and truly be dead by then, sure – but it's a lot less than the 101,100 years we thought the Universe had. "So the ultimate end of the Universe comes much sooner than expected," says astrophysicist Heino Falcke of Radboud University in the Netherlands, "but fortunately it still takes a very long time." The work is a direct follow-up on a 2023 paper, in which Falcke and his colleagues, Michael Wondrak and Walter van Suijlekom, found that black holes are not the only things in the Universe that emit Hawking radiation. Rather, less dense objects could also undergo a gradual evaporation in the form of Hawking radiation, or something like it.

Death is honestly an odd thing. I think we can all grasp easily enough the idea of someone dying when their body is destroyed, imagine a building landing on you or something along those lines.
But things that normally kill people now...like cancer? I intellectually get it of course. But seeing someone die from cancer it just seems absurd. Some little changes inside and the person that you knew becomes just a lump of flesh...with no way to stop it, no way to fix them. All our technology, all our science and still the person is just gone.

This was a bummer, as I would have been awesome, and my last name would be an extra zing for the spot to push me into fame. However, I was a bit rusty on the midwest and would have needed to learn those states (the I and O states). So I sort of get the German guy's map deal. He did get Texas, California and Florida correct. Also guessed correctly on Kansas after 3 tries, and Washington. So he did pretty well. If he had beer and blue eyes I'd pass him in geography.

I love nuclear power and think most of the grid should be transitioned to it, outside of some hydro and natgas peaking plants. A massive dose of fission baseload would be awesome.

After the course was over one of the students went to the professor to ask him about the eventual fate of the solar system where the sun would eventually swallow the earth.
When he confirmed to her that this would happen in 4.5 billion years not 4.5 million years she was visibly relieved.
And while that is 1000X more time I suspect none of us have much to be worried about if it will occur millions of years in the future...

My late brother worked for a company that manufactured mining equipment. He would go to the coal mining areas, and go into the mines. He had a great deal of respect for miners. Federal workers couldn't cut it.

Do you carry pepper spray? My youngest daughter is very petite, but has started carrying a canister on her key chain.

I have BA in Communication (note no "s" at the end) from Seton Hall University. My courses included Oral Communication, where we had to give speeches, or poetry readings on various topics. The class then critiqued the speech, offering advice for improvement. The whole point of the class to get comfortable with, and adept at, public speaking.
Sophomore year, the class was Persuasive Speaking. We were graded on three presentations of varying length delivered to the class. Don't recall my first two, but the third one had to either advocate for a cause or sell you something. Around this time, Slim Whitman's albums were being flogged all over late night TV, so I ordered several of them and did a ten minute pitch for my final grade. Aced the class, needless to say...

Also, steady pay, and reasonable benefits. Not Cadillac benefits, but pretty darned good. And reasonable paid time off.
I did not get a Christmas bonus, I did not get a partnership and commensurate compensation, but I did get time with family and friends and was paid a living wage.
And I gave a hot damn about ethics and production, and was paid commensurate with my abilities.
Stop crapping on government workers. It isn't the workers that are the problem, but the horseshit management. As always.

you and my late mother were the exceptions. The rule is the taxpayer does not get their money's worth from most gov't employees. My mom's constant rant was having to do 5 peoples work because the other's wouldn't. And of course you are correct that management could have and should have put a stop to this.
