Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival, just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Wausau)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind, be nice. According to SCOTUS Trolls have rights, ha.
3) No, I repeat NO running with sharp objects.
4) Before having a wonderful Memorial Day Weekendlease bow your heads in a moment of silence and thank those who have sacrificed their lives to protect the greatest country in the world.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

4/12 – Ben Had sent an update on Jim SND. He had surgery to implant a feeding tube, and he hopes to go home soon.
5/6 Update – Jim SND passed away. Please pray for God’s comfort for his wife.

4/14 – Grateful – the range bag lady posted: T-Rex’s mother, MommaRex, was rushed to the hospital over the weekend and was diagnosed with Parkinsons. The family is asking for prayers for God’s strength in dealing with the disease and challenging family situation.
5/1 Update – TRex and Grateful thank the Horde for their prayers for Mamma Rex. She is doing better and is entering a lovely assisted living apartment this weekend. They thank God for His loving ways, and the Horde for all of their prayers.

4/16 – TecumsehTea requested prayers for a grandson, age 15. The grandson had been sick with a fever and headache since 4/13, and took a turn for the worse. He was taken to the ER on 4/16.
5/3 Update – Her grandson is feeling much better. It was a particularly bad spell with Lyme disease. Thank you all for the prayers.

4/22 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for M, who sometimes fills in as the organist. He has to have vein surgery on his feet, and he needs to have his feet work well to play the organ pedals. Also, prayers for J, who is having a stent put in her heart.
5/10 Update – Thanks so much for the prayers. J’s heart surgery was successful and she is now in rehab. M’s surgery on his foot was successful, as well.

4/23 – Trudy asked for prayers for her husband, Bill, who is having persistent pain that may well be heart-related.
4/26 Update – Trudy and Bill sent their thanks for the prayers. He had suffered a moderate heart attack. He received 3 stents, and came home on 4/26. They are very thankful for their 54 years together, and are delighted that there will be more! They have been truly uplifted by the prayers.

4/25 – MkY sent thanks for the prayers for his wife Judy, and asked for continued prayers. She has stage IV renal cancer. The tumors have shrunk, but not significantly. Every ER visit has been related to pain management, and it has not been going well. Please pray for help with the pain, and for MkY – that he can be strong and steady even though he feels helpless.
5/3 Update – Thanks again for all the prayers. Judy’s tumors are shrinking. The oncologist is “encouraged”, so that bleeds over into Judy’s attitude and is encouraging. The palliative care team believes that most of the pain is not cancer-related, so they have prescribed some alternatives. She now rarely takes the oxycodone.

4/26 – Commissar Hrothgar asked for prayers for his elderly sister-in-law, Elizabeth, and her battle with a persistent foot infection, and for blessings on her church friends that are helping her in so many ways!

4/26 – Bif gave an update on Smash. Her abdominal issues are getting closer to full diagnosis. They are waiting on some specialists. She will probably need some surgery to fix what the MRI radiologists say is a necessary repair. Also, she has cataract surgery coming up.

4/26 – Oddbob requested prayers for his daughter’s MIL, Elaine, who was diagnosed with ALS this week.

4/26 – John the River asked for prayers. His girlfriend and partner of the last 10 years passed away suddenly and without warning on Easter Sunday. He went to her house with dinner and found her on the bedroom floor. Her name was Marsha.

4/26 – L asked for prayers for R, her granddaughter.

4/27 – NemoMeImpuneLacessit would appreciate prayers, for laparoscopy surgery on 4/27.

4/27 – Teresa in Fort Worth sent an update with great news – all of her tumors have shrunk by half! The plan now is to continue on this chemotherapy medication until it stops working; no idea how long that might be. When that does happen, they will look at whether or not surgery can be done. (Right now, it cannot, due to the fact that there are multiple tumors.) The surgeon did say that her response to chemo has been “dramatic”, and he is “cautiously optimistic” that surgery will be an option in the future. Her case and the good response to the medication has been extremely rare – such a blessing.

4/30 – “…” posted that she could use some prayers for her good friend Emm, who is starting five months of chemo, followed hopefully by surgery, then radiation.

5/3 – D asked for prayers for his wife, Susan, who has been having some issues. They went to the hospital on 5/1, and all the signs are pointing to pancreatic cancer. They meet with other doctors on 5/5. Any prayers would be a blessing.
5/14 Update – Susan is having less pain now. Thank you for the prayers.

5/8 - Don Draper asked for prayers for his wife. They lost their Kelpie companion on 5/7 due to complications from lymphoma. His wife is devastated.

5/8 – Backwoods Willy requested prayers for a partner church of theirs in Pakistan. One of the initial strikes by India was very close to the church and the pastor’s home. Ongoing shelling is nearby. Please pray for the Lord’s protection for Pastor S, his family, and his church.

5/10 – Cosda asked for prayers for his wife, who recently had a mole removed that came back as melanoma cancer. She is scheduled for surgery next week, and it looks like that should remove it completely.

5/11 – Ciampino sent his thanks for the prayers. He was injured by a cat scratch that caused a lot more bleeding than he realized was happening. He also ended up with sepsis and septic shock, and in critical condition. He was treated with IV antibiotics, 5 units of blood, and steroids. He also got his first helicopter ride, as he was transferred from one hospital to another for care.
5/14 – Ciampino is home.

5/16 – KT is still under the weather but is recovering slowly.
5/17 – neverenoughcaffiene asked for prayers for her sister-in-law, Jackie, who is looking at dialysis. Her kidneys have been failing for several years is she is getting close based on her numbers. Hopefully new meds will help.

5/17 – B asked for prayers for the Lord to move a bowel food constriction or “kink” out so that his bowels would function properly.

5/17 – Polliwog the ‘Ette had a physical recently, and some test results indicate a need for major changes in diet. She would appreciate prayers for wisdom and discernment in creating a food plan that works for the entire family’s various needs, and the ability to make health choices on a long-term basis.

5/17 – Brother Tim would deeply appreciate prayers. He had a growth on the side of his face for years, and it is scheduled for removal on 6/20. Depending on the biopsy results, they may also need to remove some lymph nodes. This is on top of his housing issues, other health issues, and not enough income.

5/20 – Stateless could use some prayers.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

20 Thanks Annie for including Jackie on the list. The new meds haven't helped, her score for kidney function is 16 and the trigger for dialysis is 15. She's now on a very restricted diet where she can only eat certain foods, in the past she could eat most foods in moderation only being careful with high protein items.

33 I remember the beforetimes, when Memorial Day was a time of remembrance, putting out the flag, but lacked a visceral impact.

Now, it's difficult to take in. I think what makes is hard is the sting of defeat, the sense of failure in Iraq and Afghanistan. Offers for counseling rather than removals from command, followed up by a witch hunt over Covid vaccinations.

I can only imagine how much worse it ie for those who went into combat, were wounded and saw friends die. I had friends die, but at least I wasn't there at that awful moment.

Let us pray to the God of all-healing that we may all find His peace.

36 Yo, Prayer Thread People, on a serious note:

A very dear friend has a son (Tim) that previously successfully battled cancer with extensive chemotherapy some 20 years ago, but now has been living with kidney disease and declining kidney function for several years, which have now progressed to the point were he really needs a kidney transplant.
In a real blessing, he was just approved and placed on the eligibility list for such a transplant, a critical and non-trivial part of the process.
A living kidney donor transplant offers very substantial benefits (as it lasts longer, can be performed as soon as a donor is found, and there is no cost to the donor) over the alternative of long-term dialysis. The donor can be a non-relative located anywhere within the continental USA and donors go on to live full lives with just one kidney. What a blessing such a gift to Tim would be!
Please pray for Tim & share his need for a donor through any social networks you might have. Coordination is managed through the Inova Transplant Center (703/776-8053). More info at https://tinyurl.com/hkmm25nc
His contact email is TimNeedsaKidney01@gmail.com.

46 On the positive side, I was pleased to see that the only officer to raise a fuss over the Afghanistan disaster - and who was forced out of the service for it - is now the lead on the board of inquiry into the whole affair.

I also learned that the Secdef is bringing in JAGs who were separated due to do Covid to help flesh out Trump's EO regarding reinstatement. Many of those who "voluntarily" separated did so under pain of a court martial or other threats. Hopefully something will come of it.

I think the military vaccination will be bigger than Agent Orange, because it affected the whole force, and there should in the fullness of time be a monument to those who died because Lloyd Austin wanted a green stop-light chart.

Very weird experience. I became very weak and only got halfway to my chair (at least another 10-12 small paces) and managed to sit on a small table. Everything was going dim and white, like a mist descending and all I wanted was to lay down - but then there would be trouble getting me up. So I sat with my head on my walking stick, leaning into my daughter until EMT arrived. If she hadn't been there to support me I would have dived face first into the floor.
I actually thought I was going for good and even voiced that as I had trouble getting air. My younger is on oxygen so they put a cannula in my nose from the O2 machine and that helped.

Once a couple years ago, my BP meds kicked in when I guess my BP was a bit low and I had a blackout on my feet, in the kitchen, hanging to the oven and fridge door handles until it ameliorated, but this was a whiteout. Strange.

My favorite misinformation phrase is "Arab Christians," which is a pure lie. No Arabs converted to Christianity under Arab rule. It carried the death penalty.

They are the descendants of the original converts to Christianity, i.e. Jews and Samaritans, maybe a few Romans and Greeks. Their language is a variant of Aramaic and their liturgy uses the original Aramaic language spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper.

But that's a bit inconvenient for everyone else, so we just call them Arabs.

58 I mentioned reading Kendall v. Stokes from 1838. The Stokes Co. was owed some $160k (in 1838!) from the post office for work. Had to go to Congress, who specifically authorized, via legislation, payment. Jackson's Postmaster General paid like $130k.
So they got a writ of mandamus from the courts for the rest.
Where an injunction says "stop," a mandamus says "do;" both flow from equitable powers of court.
The case is the 1st on the "take care" clause, so in vogue today. The Justices would be horrified at the district court rulings today.

Bottom line: The courts' equitable powers to enforce legislation are severely and strictly limited.
Not only must there be a personal--and not general public--right to the have the act "faithfully" executed, but also there must be no discretion given to the Executive on execution.
Recall: Congress had specifically ordered payment to specific firm--and it was still a tough question whether the discretion of "when" could be infringed by courts.
The current cases are nowhere near that standard.
The injunctions are illegal.

On the plus side, they are working hard to demonstrate why it should never be taken seriously again. If they had limited it to a couple of cases, that would be one thing.

But now they're basically creating a new power to micromanage every executive branch decision without even considering standing or the merits of the case. The TROs are automatic, which is unsupportable and unsustainable.

Roberts blew it bigly. His little gambit of letting things work their way through only encouraged leftist whackos and when Trump decides he's had enough, he will simply pick the most egregious, facially absurd case and force a showdown that will make the judges look like total clowns and render them neutered.

71 Never thought Generac would be a woke company but I guess they are. They fired a long term employee allegedly because he would not use the preferred pronouns of an obvious transgender worker.

I understand the No win position it puts the company but they chose their side. The obvious compromise would require the fired supervisor to just always use its name instead of pronouns. If he continued with using pronouns then it’s insubordination of a simple request. But again they chose their side. The fired guy filed a claim with the EEOC for religious discrimination.

75 Out of all these current cases, (even the illegal Midnight Order by the Supreme Court) about all that _should_* remain after full litigation and briefing is ... maybe 24-48 hours notice--while remaining in detention--for deportation for Alien Enemies Acts removals.

But what's really going to come out of all this is, Trump will have the most powers of any Republican President to run his administration as he sees fit.
Maybe even as much as the typical Democrat President, who all enjoy a compliant and willing bureaucracy.

Had the left not gone so crazy, their judges so over-board, in fighting Trump, they might have preserved some of the old order, limited the damage.
As it flows now, they'll have nothing left to fight President Vance in 2029.

78 I don't have any gray wolf updates this week, but there are predators of a different sort active in Colorado.

Here is a case study in how deranged groomers insinuate themselves into families, alienating teens from their parents, demonizing the parents and actually getting law enforcement to stand down when urged by parents to intervene.

https://is.gd/CXrvyr

"LGBT Activist Teacher, Trans Husband House Minor Teen Girl In Colorado Against Mom’s Wishes"

I'd wager this math teacher had been grooming the girl for several years. And family court judges in CO already side preferentially with a transing parent (almost always a mom) against an opposing parent (almost always the dad) even without the controversial new legislation.

The girl is now 18 and firmly on that roller coaster to hell that is transgenderism. Pray that she finds her way somewhere down the line.

The recent Harvard one is pretty close.
The one ordering him not to revoke security clearances is as well.
I thought the one ordering him to keep trannies in the military was going to be it, but the left lost that on appeal.
Dark horse is the student visa revocations.

Courts used to understand they had no power, even in egregious abuse cases, when the questions involved national security and foreign policy.
And severe limits, as only granted by Congress, in immigration.
I mean, how insane is it to say "Harvard has the right to, in effect, issue visas?"
Or, "law firms have a right to a security clearance against the judgment of the Commander in Chief?"

But the courts have gone insane trying to protect the left's power.
These are not close questions of Trump abusing the discretion of the Office--these are egregious usurpations of Executive power by the courts.

We already have laws against some of those. If you take tax money, you can't discriminate on the basis of sex, race, or religion. It's true that these laws have not been uniformly enforced, e.g. VMI vs Harvard, but we can do better.

At which point, the poorer sorts would get no education at all, and would become even more of a drag on society.

'But what's really going to come out of all this is, Trump will have the most powers of any Republican President'

Really? Because I am seeing something else. The pattern is this:
1) Trump takes some action
2) some federal judge-clown declares it illegal
3) slowly the case makes it to SCOTUS and they sometimes rule in Trump's favor
4) if they do, some other judge-clown issues a TRO anyway.
5) SCOTUS ignores the illegal ruling in 4) and 3) repeats.

The outcome of all of this is Trump has to wait in a BMV line over and over for SCOTUS to give him permission to do his job.
Yes, this dissolves any remaining respect you and I have for the judicial branch but in the meantime the bad guys are getting what they want.

We assert, therefore, that judicial encroachment is as liable to question as legislative or executive; and this power in every department to defend itself, and assert its own independence, we contend is the undoubted doctrine of the constitution. Certainly the constitution has assigned limits to the powers of all the departments; and leaves each within its sphere independent. Certainly it is silent as to any such power being vested in either, as would enable it without question, to encroach upon the powers of the others. He cited, to show not only that it was competent for the executive department of the government to resist, but that it was its duty to resist any encroachment by the judiciary: Rose v. Agreed, as long as the government can prevent the parents from giving the money to loons, e.g. madrasas. Yes, you run the risk that the government will try to limit the list of acceptable schools to leftists, so you'd have to have very clear rules about what constitutes a school, and what things cannot be promulgated there, e.g. Jew hate.

The business of prohibiting tax dollars from going to religious education is based on a false premise, that of there being a clear line of separation between religion and government.

If you look at the history, "public" schools regularly provided religious instruction up until the 1940s when the Supreme Court began deconstructing the Constitution.

Part of the confusing comes from the "Blaine Amendments", pushed by James G. Blaine from Maine, which were about preventing CATHOLIC schools from getting Protestant tax dollars. It was blatantly unconstitutional and finally struck down.

But there remains a residual sense parents with true school choice might use the money in a way people disapprove of, which is kind of silly because look at the smoking, sex-pervert dumpster fire that our public schools already are!

Well, because God commands us to, for one thing.

We can also ask why they are in such a position. The de-industrialization of America was a deliberate strategy. So too was the importation of low-wage, low-skill labor designed to break the working class and reduce them to despair.

Maybe let's fix those things before advocating forced sterilization based on income.

I figured that would come up. I'm not arguing for some version of the status quo. I'm arguing for a return to the status quo ante (the 60s). Sure, there were problems; you've already cited one, but it was understood that the purpose of the schools was to raise a generation of people with the tools to develop useful skills, as well as teach a love of the country and its tenets. Neither of those currently obtain in today's public schools, but again, that's an argument to do better. I would start with a complete excision of any role for the teacher unions. No contract would be signed with them. Teachers would be free agents, and could be dismissed at will

The fear of madrassas is not sufficient grounds to sustain the status quo regarding funding. It's like saying we need gun control to keep the "wrong people" (determined by whom?) from obtaining firearms.

There will still be oversight, and it's a known fact that madrassas tend to have other issues besides preaching jihad, clear violations that can be punished on an individual basis. Of course, deporting the illegal migrants will also limit the demand for such places.

I see the good of freeing families to use tax dollars in an open marketplace of (accredited?) schools is better than what we have.

175 Speaking of which, there is an interesting trend in Catholic social teaching regarding poverty. Instead of providing aid, the new emphasis is on vocational training, personal finance, and life skills.

That is to say more individualized assistance to help people become independent. There is also a stronger drive to emphasize faith as a tool to this end, that ministries to help the poor should attach equal weight to their salvation rather than just being another agency.

I read about this in my diocesan magazine yesterday. A welcome change.

There is no proof or otherwise that I benefit directly or even indirectly.

Merely, the entire scheme of extortion is predicated upon some amorphous belief that, somehow, magically, in some way, a generally educated populace benefits everyone.

My discussion of Boomers are about cultural mistakes that were made and what we can learn from them. As much as people want to go back to the 1990s or 1980s, we can't and we need to start seeing those times as a period of continual change that was always moving in a certain direction.

Boomers (and everyone else, for that matter) need to objectively examine how we got where we are so that we can determine what will work better. We are in a unique moment of opportunity, one that we did not expect, and we cannot afford to fumble it away.

To give an obvious example, the old "social liberal/fiscal conservative" thing never worked. Boomer Cons were willing to tolerate social losses for financial victories, and it cost us bigly. It's interesting to see how many nominal Christians still pick on Trump for being imperfect while refusing to acknowledge that this sinning, swaggering blowhard actually did more for the Right to Live movement than any other president.

No kidding. Gen X broke heavily to Trump, but many voted against him. I'd wager a large majority of my graduating high school class certainly did.

Yet even then, generations share certain traits and assumptions, just as ethnic groups do, and we should be able to look at these without being accused of bigotry.

There are absolutely many threads within Boomer culture, but it is interesting how they stand out so sharply from what was before and what is coming now. It is also indicative to analyze politics not from pure partisan angles or policy questions, but generational culture.

I am a Boomer. I think a lot of us here are. Back in the day I would have called myself a Classical liberal. I grew up in an area that was completely Democrat yet never agreed from the time I was old enough to vote. But it was really Reagan that wholly converted me. I cannot relate at all to these stupid grey haired idiots standing protesting who knows what and hate being lumped in with them.

197 To put it another way, if we use a generational lens, the individual scandals, policies, etc. moving from the 1980s to today take on a different look.

Gary Hart was destroyed by having an affair, but Bill Clinton managed to weather it. We can talk about media, but they do are shaped by generational demographics.

Using this lens, we see that the Boomer Hegemony began in 1992 and has now concluded. Prior to that time, the Silent Generation had the demographic upper hand and their values prevailed in terms of what was in movies, entertainment and also politics. But with their decline, Boomer values became preponderant, and it is no accident that P.J. O'Rourke's brand of conservatism - which proudly emphasized having a hot second wife, drinking and mild drug use - became acceptable.

'we should be able to look at these without being accused of bigotry.'

I wouldn't accuse you of bigotry but I think you might be in danger of having a collectivist mindset. IE This set of people over here are Good, as a group.
That set of people over there? Well, they're Bad, as a group.

204 I love this from Harvard:
https://tinyurl.com/3k7s86ph

Harvard administrators have challenged the government’s actions in court—arguing that the Trump administration is restricting academic freedom and First Amendment rights.

The tradeoff put to Harvard and other universities is clear: Allow the Government to micromanage your academic institution or jeopardize the institution’s ability to pursue medical breakthroughs, scientific discoveries, and innovative solutions,” the university’s legal representatives wrote in April, according to The Harvard Crimson.

Since then, federal agencies have continued to announce that they are pausing federal funds to the university.

Translation: Sure, we hate the Joos and actively attack them, but we do some good things too.

And Mussolini made the trains run on time.

Just FYI, I first tried is.gd to shorten the url, and they said GP is "on their blacklist". What a nice way to say "we're censoring you".

205 Gen X had it best. We lived the equivalent of about a thousand years of tech advancement during our teen years.
We went from the dewey decimal system to AI so what as a kid took me months to research now I have at my fingertips.
No more long distance phone calls, I talk to my relatives in England for free, and I can see their faces.
From 3 channels of shit on the TV to hundreds of channels of shit. Not sure if that is a good thing though.

Right now is the best times. Not the 50's or 60's. Right now.
We live in awesome times and it's only going to get better.

Now. About those flying cars....

In so doing, we will produce lasting American dominance in the global nuclear energy market, create tens of thousands of high-paying jobs, and generate American-led prosperity and resilience."

219 In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
