Daily Tech News 20 May 2025

Top Story

  • Intel has announced two and a half new graphics cards aimed at workstations: The Arc Pro B50 and B60. (Tom's Hardware)

The B50, priced at $299, has 16GB of RAM and a cut-down version of the B580 GPU. It has 16 GPU cores rather than 20, and the 16GB of RAM is on a 12GHz 128-bit bus instead of having 12GB of RAM on a 19GHz 192-bit bus.

So yes, it will run slower (unless you need more than 12GB of RAM, in which case the B580 will flounder), but on the other hand it uses only 70W of power, which is tiny. The B580 specified 190W.

At just 70W it can run on power just from the PCIe slot, and it's available in a half-height version to fit in awkward cases like the Hyte Y family (which can only fit a single full-height card).

The other card, the Arc Pro B60, is a B580 with 24GB of RAM. At full power (200W) it should perform within 10% of the B580. In low power mode (120W) it will slow down by about 15%. Priced around $500.

  • Wait, you said two and a half.

    I did.

The Intel Arc Pro Dual 48GB Turbo is the half. (Tom's Hardware)

Made by Maxsun, it's two B60s sharing a single card. Very literally: The B60 uses a PCIe 5.0 x8 connection, so each of the chips on this card takes up one half of a PCIe x16 slot.

If you're playing games you'll get the same performance as a B580 or B60. But if you're running AI, you can use all 48GB of RAM for a single task thanks to new software from Intel.

And if you have a server you can combine four of these to assign 192GB of VRAM to a single task.

8 Tons of Horde fun yesterday, I thought, in the art thread, where there's a painting of Vercingétorix devant César [Hat Tip: MP4], and Aetius451AD chimed in when Don Black had asked "what am I looking at?" and, like, this is Aetius451AD's wheelhouse!

This is after Caesar won at the Battle of Alesia. Vercingetorix had been raising a rebellion against the Romans. He had numbers and was firing granaries all along the country side. Caesar was not running supply lines, so he had to live off the land. He cornered Vercingetorix inside a walled town called Alesia. He encircled the town with a wall. Then another force of Gauls moved against Caesar's rear, so Caesar had a second wall built outside his lines and his men were between the two walls. Alesia could not get food, Caesar could not get food. And he was vastly outnumbered. Vercingetorix tried a break out and Caesar crushed it.

Vercingetorix surrendered to save his men, who were starving- and the rebellion and Gaul were now in Rome's pocket.

15 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 47 cloudy degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor as I wait for the sun to rise. Supposedly up into the low 60s today, but we will see.

About 2 hours of work waiting, which is less than usual. I'll still start at the same time, though, as I like getting out by around 12. I think I am going to have to learn to use my left hand on the mouse, however; I've developed a pain in my right upper arm that I think may be connected to the reach for the mouse, although I'm pretty sure I'm ergonomically correct.

I didn't expect CBD to use my picture suggestion so soon, though I'm glad there was a good discussion raised. I only wish he'd put up some of the lovely lady suggestions I've sent.

25 I probably should have waited until the tech thread to post this...

I went to the border wall here in New Mexico in response to the federal judge here in Las Cruces who let all the illegals go who entered the border military zone using the excuse that there wasn't enough signage.

There's a new sign about 30 ft north of the border wall and about every 1/10 of a mile going east and west that states in English and Spanish you're about to enter a military zone and you will be arrested if you do.

Federal district court judges, in addition to assuming the roles of the presidency, have now taken on being in charge of signage ordinances.

Sounds like a productive and fun evening, Fen. I have to write back to the book publisher who has given me notes on my mystery novel (I agree in principle with most of the changes, but have no real idea how to implement them).

Thursday evening my local pipe club meets at the cigar/pipe shop in the suburbs. The fun there is deciding what pipe and tobacco to bring, and being able to sit among like-minded people. Most of the group seem rather conservative, too!

Does anyone - on the right or left - think that, had an FBI chief sent out a pic of "8645" or "8644," that that man wouldn't be immediately hauled up on charges and at the very least, given a massive fine if not actual prison time?

And yet, Comey is going to walk away from this with not so much as his hair mussed, laughing all the way to the bank. You know it, I know it and he knows it.

But please, tell me again how Trump's administration is filled with straight-shooting badasses who are putting the fear of God into Dems. I could use a chuckle.

66 Apple seems to be completely determined to never let Epic upload Fortnite to the Apple Store.

When the judge forces them to do it, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple sneakily inserts some code in iOS/iPadOS which will specifically make Fortnite run at 5 fps just to get a little more revenge until the judge makes them walk that back, too.

They cut through rebar.
So they’d need either a blowtorch, a large chisel, or an angle grinder/rotary saw.

All of those are going to make varying amounts of noise.

The blowtorch is relatively quiet but it’s difficult to smuggle an acetylene and oxygen tank into a jail.

The angle grinder/saw would make so much noise they’d wake up the entire building.

A chisel would be the easiest to smuggle but it’s still going to make some noise while sawing through the rebar.

Maybe they got a small laser or plasma cutter in there but you’re gonna need an outlet and extension cord.

So somebody in that jail had to know and either helped or ignored what was going on.

71 Latin had already stopped pronouncing V as "w" by the time of the Caesars, I'm pretty sure. I think "C" was already beginning to become the familiar Italian "tsch" sound, too.

So Caesar probably actually did say "veni vidi vici" and not "wenny weedy weeky", but it gets hyper corrected post facto to match how classicists pronounce stuff.

I'm not angry at you, Fen, but when I see something like this, I think of an old Herblock cartoon where McCarthy and Nixon are standing in front of a vandalized picture of Adlai Stevenson with pails and brushes of black tar while a smiling Ike chides them with a chuckling, "Naughty, naughty!"

Replace Ike with Patel, McCarthy and Nixon with Comey, the tar with a smoking gun and the picture of Stevenson with one of Trump and that's how I feel about the administration now.

If Comey were a Republican and Trump a Dem, the asshole would already have had his door blown off its hinges in a 3am SWAT raid.

Fen, we hardly sit around in club chairs wearing suits or smoking jackets and sipping brandy, but yes, it is a little like a club out of Doyle or Dorothy Sayers!

I read The Silent Meow by Gallico a long time ago and loved it too. Gallico is an underappreciated novelist. He rarely wrote the same book twice. His was the novel that became the film The Poseidon Adventure, for instance, and earlier he wrote The Snow Goose about WWII England; and The Hand of Mary Constable, about a psychic researcher who has to turn detective. Those are off the top of my head. I know he wrote a lot more.

If the signs don't include Chinese, Arabic, Braille, Klingon, ASL, etc. then the signs are no barrier at all to non English or Spanish speakers.
