Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Negotiating like The “Donald” Lesson 1 [Pete Bog]This is not news, but Trump tends to polarize viewpoints. For years I thought of him as a guy whose personality got in the way of some very sensible policies. To some degree I still do, however he has successfully humanized and reintroduced himself to a lot of people over the last couple of years. Getting shot can do that. The first step to learning to negotiate like The Donald is to remember who he is, a Real Estate Developer. He has made a fortune in one of the most competitive markets in the world by recognizing opportunities, understanding the path forward and negotiating that path. Does he have an enormous ego and get prickly when people mock him? Yes, so does Obama, and so does almost every member of the Press. As a rule, Real Estate people hate the Press. Most Developers try to avoid the Media. They need a villain for every story and only by making their story heard will they prosper. Developers are always the villain. The truth is not relevant to the journalist’s goal of getting heard. If they had real talent and brains they would probably have been something other than Journalism majors. Maybe even Real Estate Developers. To his credit The Donald has developed a more subtle relationship with the Press. They are a tool, and he treats them as such. They know they are being used and as a result despise him and themselves even more. One of the key lessons to negotiating like the Donald is to keep your opponent guessing. If you pay attention you will see that he runs the exact same playbook every time he sets out to accomplish something. He makes a brash claim or laughable statement. Say for example, “The US should own Greenland, it is our destiny!” Of course, the Danish hoi polloi, and the useful predictable press wail and scream. But with whom is Trump negotiating? How about in his first Campaign when he named Marco Rubio “Little Marco” or Ted Cruz “Lying Ted”? Why would he be so unnecessarily rude? How about when he muttered under his breath in the debate with Hillary “what a nasty woman”? Because he was not negotiating with the Danish government, his Primary opponents or Hillary. He was negotiating with the people of Greenland, and the in the other examples with the voters. He was demonstrating his product, that is the US to the inhabitants of Greenland, and himself to the voters, while distinguishing that product from the competition. In these examples the competition is an inattentive Danish government, and his political opponents. Apply this same lens to the Tariff Hoopla. Same playbook. Same application.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

In a town near mine they collaborated with the state on some touchy feely "more housing" initiative. This was the trojan horse that let the state come in, seize their fancy (and only) hotel, near it down, and pay a developer to build tenements for "newcomers" You'll be shocked to know that as per the leftists in this town the villains are not their local town officials, the state officials, or the federal officials who were letting all the illegals come in (at the time), and of course not the "newcomers" themselves. I'm guessing Trump backed off (bigly) on the China tariffs after market fell. Then it soared like 10%. I'd suppose Trump thought Powell would come to the rescue and lower rates ... but instead, Trump "saved the market" by backing off tariffs, without getting much from China.
There are still meaningful tariffs, and China is still losing market share to other nations like India and Vietnam ... and now the Saudis (and Qatar) are looking to pour some cash into USA. American universities are facing another threat from the Trump administration, which intends to use a civil anti-fraud law to withdraw federal funding from colleges that promote diversity and inclusion policies, the Department of Justice announced Monday.
The False Claims Act will be enforced “when a federal contractor or recipient of federal funds knowingly violates civil rights laws,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche says in a memo. People were shocked when Trump said he would love for America to run Gaza, but they didn't listen to what he actually said, because he was negotiating with the people of Gaza, not anybody else. He said he'd love to do it if Hamas was gone and the war was ended and there would be no fighting anymore. Of course that's an utterly unrealistic set of circumstances, but as you say, it's just an original negotiating position, not something he actually believes will ever happen.

New book ‘Original Sin’ reveals moment Kamala Harris campaign cut ties with Biden: ‘What is he doing?’
Kamala Harris was left aghast when President Joe Biden donned a “Trump 2024” cap at a Pennsylvania firehouse in a bizarre scene at the height of last year’s presidential race, a bombshell new book has revealed. During a visit to a Shanksville firehouse while commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Biden, now 82, posed with more than a dozen youngsters clad in pro-Trump attire — then briefly put on the cap after being egged on by a member of the crowd. I would argue President Trump has flipped the script on Democrats. He's learned they're really good at asking for the moon and settling for half that distance while letting the GOP claim a "win" because Democrats only got half their ask, even though the GOP essentially gave away everything and received nothing.
President Trump likes to get under the skin of Democrats through an outrageous ask and settling for 50% of what President Trump wants, but President Trump still moves things our direction instead of the usual theater the GOPe engages in. My old man has been a (residential) real estate developer his whole life. I grew up riding around with him in the car - in the 80's and 90's - driving around back roads while he would scout out new properties... write down phone numbers... when car phones became a thing - he was on his phone constantly in the car talking to his construction crews, his project managers, his lawyers, his boss...
He hates the media too. Anytime there was a news item about his properties, he was always the villain. A big part of why I'm a conservative is because of all of the stories my father would tell me about the BS he had to deal with from governments and the media. Whats hilarious is that his brother in law (my uncle) is a famous retired TV news personality and they're best buds but also fight like caged animals when politics comes up. Ironically, I think the stolen election was actually beneficial to both Trump and the US. It gave him time to realize what the REAL opponent is, gain new allies, and strategize how to defeat the bureaucracy this time. If they wouldn't have stolen the 2020 election, he'd have fought, but NONE of what happened in the past 120 days would have happened.

Trump made some noise when he suggested moving the FBI to some lavish office building away from the capitol city. There was much hand wringing about that. One reason he cited was the run-down state of not only the Hoover building, but the capitol city in general.
To wit; he badgered D.C. mayor Norton into removing BLM Plaza... a blight on the face of the city. Also... his off-the-cuff remarks about a month ago about revitalizing Gaza into some sort of resort town. He sees potential... as a developer. There are probably other, not spoken reasons, but you can tell he's still thinking about the opportunity to make money. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 20, 2025 11:22 AM (Q4IgG) 72

REMINDER: not every business is like real estate and this is why his tariff policy has been piss poor.
1) The BIG ANNOUNCEMWENT ON TEEEVEEE - done without thinking much through, he'd been forced to do these 90 day patches... 2) They have not done any thinking as to how to do compliance. For example, Chinese freight forwarders endlessly email me ways to get around tariffs. I report them to customs for about 9 months now, and they never ever disappear. 3) By allowing non-resident importers to exist, they have set up a system where American firms face all the compliance but offshore Chinese don't even worry about this...watch Amazon become completely Chinese now, because no one enforces shit on them. 3) By doing this "every 90 days" game it massively increases uncertainty for a field where people make purchases months in advancce....unlike real estate where you can negotiate while the building is still being rented, this means complete chaos. For example, China banned the export of rare earth magnets. Did America build up a year supply of this? OF COURSE NOT. Posted by: Harun at May 20, 2025 11:38 AM (IuIym) 113

Trump has a lot of schticks.
One is to say things about his opponents, driving them into a frenzy. The point of the insults is to BE petty and insulting. People who hate you are often not thinking rationally. They make stupid decisions. He then exploits all those errors. TDS isn't an outcome, it's an active choice by Trump. He wants his opponents to be left footed and deranged. Another is making the most outrageous ask, first. Ask Denmark for Greenland, settle for a free trade agreement. Stop the windfarm that was already permitted. Trade that for a gas line and a free trade agreement. Always be dealing yourself extra cards to play. The whole U.S owning Gaza - never going to happen, but he can trade that for something of actual value. He's always trading up. Arabs recognize a deal maker and a trader when they see one. If his "personality" encompasses political integrity - meaning and what you say and trying to implement what you run on - his personality is among the best we've had in public life in modern times. Serious voters care only about results in key areas. Others who lack substantive understanding, or who don't care because they aren't directly affected, dwell on irrelevant personality issues. They should stick his body in 55 gallon drum with used motor oil, set it on fire and float over Niagara Falls.
I hope that doesn’t sound vindictive. It's too reminiscent of a Viking funeral. Now, if the drum were to be shot full of holes and floated on the local sewage treatment pond, we can talk. Posted by: Archimedes at May 20, 2025 12:11 PM (s8j++) 213

And Trump will be the elder statesman that Republicans should strive to be. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, reflecting on change and permanence with Ozu at May 20, 2025 12:13 PM (GBKbO) 215

I think it's far more likely that China's internal problems flared up with the sudden drop in exports to the US, and China has become far more willing to negotiate than their previous public comments indicated.
Interestingly, China says the effects of the tariffs weren't that big. https://is.gd/vu6VrC Retail sales rose 5.1% from a year earlier in April, missing analysts’ estimates of 5.5% growth, according to a Reuters poll. Sales had grown by 5.9% in the previous month. Industrial output grew 6.1% year on year in April, stronger than analysts’ expectations for a 5.5% rise, while slowing down from the 7.7% jump in March, indicating the impact from U.S. tariffs was not as harsh as was being expected. Some interviewed by The Post said they had joined the federal workforce for the stability and security of a government job. Many noted that they could earn more in the private sector. Almost all mentioned the chance to help others and make a difference.
----------------- Join the Marines. Then you can make a fucking difference. Pushups are required. Posted by: Pudinhead at May 20, 2025 11:12 AM (n17eQ) Yes of course. They "could" earn more in the private sector. They could also be fired for lack of productivity, and if I had a buck for every time I've seen or actually heard a .gov worker say that, I'd buy a new gun. I'm thinking they have an inflated sense of self-worth based on NOT being in the competitive private economy. Like the funnyman said, "I've been in the real world. They expect results" Posted by: OneEyedJack at May 20, 2025 12:36 PM (FCbAQ) 228
Trump is always inside the others ODAP loop ... he moves first every time ... forcing the others to respond ... which by the time they do he has moved again ...
and I've never once heard Trump hit back about being called the Orange Man ... he only hits back when you hit him first (call him nazi or facist, racist or ignorant/stupid gets his attention) Posted by: The Dark Lord at May 20, 2025 12:51 PM (DBAaD) 229
We still seem on a course to partly at least, inflate our way out of the debt debacle. But actually cutting spending (especially the trillions in fraud and waste) will help a lot ... though some think we are too far gone ... idk. Posted by: illiniwek at May 20, 2025 11:08 AM (Cus5s) == I always hate to disagree with a fellow Illini. Trump wanted China to come to the table to talk on terms acceptable to us. China completely capitulated because the country with the trade surplus always loses in a trade war. China had no choice, it was causing huge issues. The fentanyl tariff surcharge is why it stopped at 30, and not 10. At the end of 90 days, Trump will expect to get something or he will move the tariffs up again.
