94 I don't think anyone can criticize Magritte's technical skill as a painter and by technical skill I mean his mastery of materials and technique. What he can be criticized for is the banal predictability of his surrealistic themes. He's like director M. Night Shyamalan with those inevitable and now irritating twist endings. Magritte had a shtick, and he never varied from it.

Sounds like a biopic about that Gurkha who singlehandedly stopped about 40 bandit raiders who attacked a train. He was just on vacation. Then one of the bandits tried to get frisky with a young woman and he flipped out.

111 Magritte can obviously paint, especially realistic details and shadows. There's no doubt about his subjects. I even like steam locomotives. But like so much of this type of painting, we are left with "so what". The room is sterile. The locomotive, no matter how well done, is silly at best.

138 La Durée Poignardée
René Magritte

From the intertubes:
René Magritte painted Time Transfixed at a moment when he was attempting to elicit “poetic secrets” through his works. With both philosophy and psychology in mind, the artist challenged himself to juxtapose two images in such a way that they would suggest in the viewer’s mind a third un-pictured thing. Here he connected two highly disparate objects—a train and a fireplace—in a composition that became one of his most iconic works.

This is not my jam but without looking up some commentary about this work I had sorted out his primary intent, that smoke, or energy, links the fireplace and engine. Magritte nailed what he set out to do and then executed it with great skill. Too often these abstract/surreal modern works are utterly incomprehensible which leaves me heading for the exits in a hurry; or if you prefer, they are the equivalent of Rap music in paint. This Rene dude is alright

Still I find myself thinking this work would be much better if it had been done in black light paints and then hung in a room kitted out with a black light disco ball, a broken down couch, a bong, and a massive stereo pumping out Led Zeppelin I.
