And, with that, range report. Daughter of Blake was in town for a few days and dad had promised her a range day. We headed out with a couple Springfield Range Officer and a Kimber KDS9c for DoB to check out. DoB much preferred the Range Officer so, it was given to DoB as a parting gift.
We then went over to the silhouette range for DoB to try an M1 Garand and a Ruger Gunsite Scout. The M1 didn't do much for my daughter but she liked the Gunsite Scout. In fact, she liked it enough to show me how to hit a 5" steel plate @ 300 meters using the red dot I have on it. Overall, great father daughter range day. Weasel, I (reluctantly) had all of the mature trees (oaks and sycamores) on my property removed a few years ago because they were all hollow and getting weaker with age. It cost more $$ than I wanted to spend, but it was definitely worth it to do it ahead of time instead of having Mother Nature toss them about. Having one of those trees fall on to one of the neighbors' houses would not have been good.

No range report for me. Hit the golf range last weekend and started jury duty on Wednesday. Soooooooo boring. Thursday we all reported at 9:30am and left at 4:30. Was only in the courtroom for maybe a half hour the entire day hearing the case. Really, really hope the case does not go past the expected 2 weeks. Otherwise a doctor's appointment and a certain trip to NH are in jeopardy. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at May 18, 2025 07:22 PM (0XVad) 30
Ben, yep, it sure was a great time.
And, in further news, new barrel has shipped, which means rifle is now stripped down in anticipation of the new barrel arriving. I've got somewhat of a condensed load work up schedule as I need to get the barrel installed and get some halfway decent loads put together in time for the match next Saturday. I also did a trigger job but the 1.5 lb trigger may be a bit too light. But, I won't know until I try out the rifle next Friday. Rifle still has the Savage Accutrigger, though which may help, what with the trigger safety. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at May 18, 2025 07:24 PM (tT6L1) 31

Range report: I finally got down to the farm this past week and was able to shoot my S&W 1854 Stealth Hunter for the first time. I fired about 150 rounds, mostly .357 Magnum but quite a few .38 Specials in several bullet weights and charges. I tried out the "iron" sights (fiber optic front and ghost ring rear) from 50 yards and was shooting two and a half inch groups consistently, which is not bad for these old eyes. The next day I mounted my little Vortex 1X4 scope, and after dialing it in hit just as well from 100 yards. 1 of 2

Shooting the Stealth Hunter I fell in love with lever guns all over again. There is something really satisfying in cranking those rounds out with a smooth as butter action. There is virtually no recoil with .357 Magnum, even peppy loads, and it really makes the steel ring. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Posted by: Uncle Si ====== According to a recent official report by a Marine Captain, https://tinyurl.com/369w8hh5, there are serious problems with the XM-7 project. Simply put, by the time you have it fully tricked out with scope, mounts, etc., it comes in somewhere around 13-14 lbs. Lot of parts breakage and wear of key components as in bolts, extractors, etc. due to the extremely high pressure of the round at the 1000-2000 round mark plus damaging the absolutely necessary suppressors (noise level from these rifles is off the charts due in part to high pressure and short 16 inch barrels).

Posted by: That SOB Van Owen --------- 357 is a whole nother beast in a long gun compared with something shorter than a 6-8 inch revolver. You get outlandish gains from the shorter barrel handguns to even a 16 inch barrel. Don't even see that velocity pickup with the 44 Magnum. Most handgun rounds get about 200 fps or so from a longer barrel like the 9mm, 40 S&W, 44 Magnum, etc. 357 Magnum gets outsized velocity gains from 300-600 fps going from a handgun to a rifle barrel length. Just got some Frontier's Bear Paws patch lube. It has an unusually high amount of bear oil in the mix. Bear oil was considered the best of the lubes in colonial times and any bear fat from a hunt was valuable stuff both for patches, rust protection and locks. Haven't had a chance to try it yet but people who have like it and these are folks persnickety about such matters. I'll report when I can.
If it works as well as people say, I'll use my current lube, based on a mid-1800s formula, as a bullet lube for black powder cartridges and save the new stuff for the flintlocks. Posted by: JTB at May 18, 2025 08:18 PM (yTvNw) 109
Basically, the military started with the requirements they wanted and worked backward--to penetrate Chinese body armor at extreme distances. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 08:07 PM (ctrM5) Although it's 15+ years old now, the US Army's "Taking Back The Infantry Half Kilometer" paper written by a CGSC student is still relevant in that it discusses the tradeoffs between a more powerful, but heavier cartridge (and the rifle to fire it) vs. the current intermediate power, but lighter cartridge and the M16/M4 series rifles chambered for 5.56mm NATO. Given the inevitable teething troubles this platform (and its ammo) will have, I expect the M16/M4 rifles to hang in there for some time yet. That assumes the XM7 will eventually get adopted for service. Posted by: Ed L at May 18, 2025 08:18 PM (AiJK3) 110

Posted by: Ed L The 52 page report upthread I linked to indicates some pretty serious issues with it. Basically parts wear and breakage of major components is simply unacceptable at the 1000-2000 round level. Pretty bad barrel erosion too. Not really something that can be fixed because high pressure from 60-70 kpsi and up breaks guns even bolt actions when firing the amount of rounds necessary in a war with no chance for field armorers to fix them up. And this is one of the problems that our military faces--we have no integrative strategy driving what weapons we buy and thus each branch simply is looking for the latest great thing out of sync with each other. Heck, we cannot even agree on replacing key Cold War era aircraft like the A-10 and the idiotic emphasis of the F-35 being everything to all services meant simply a repeat of the F-4 Phantom debacle. If anything, the military should be reequipping units with mag fed shotguns due to drones killing so many in Russia v. UKR. A 6.8 XM-7 is practically useless for that sort of warfare. Lever actions with pistol cartridges are great. I can load hotter rounds without worrying about recoil and get all the possibilities out of a cartridge. Posted by: Ed L ======= M-14's were a kludge because Springfield Armory (Govt, not company) had a not invented here mindset ignoring the superior FAL or AR10. Simply following what Beretta did with Garands (the BM-59) would have been a helluva lot simpler and cheaper. The M-14s on full auto were simply too light for the power of the cartridge to fire accurately even with a tripod under full auto. Springfield Armory came out with the absurd claim and justification that the M-14 could replace the BAR, Semi Machine Guns, and the Garand all at once. Which it failed in two out of three cases. Regarding full auto hosing down of hordes of advancing troops in the absence of good light or heavy machine guns, the AR was far easier to hold and fire as you noted at Ia Drang. Whig, Blake, I agree with you that the Army is asking way too much of the XM7. The new ammo alone is a big red flag. And the rifle (plus its basic load) is far too little based on the experience of infantry fighting at COP Wanat in Afghanistan and what I've seen of infantry combat in Ukraine. If more reach and hitting power is needed, the solution suggested in "Taking Back The Infantry Half Kilometer" still sounds good to me. Field multiple upper receivers for each lower. USMC Recon units do this now, with "shorty" barrel fitted uppers for each M27 assigned. That allows unit commanders to tailor troop load out based on the mission at hand.

Self defense with no backup, reliability is foremost in my mind. It is more that 5.56 at short range such as inside a house has an excellent record and using the 55 grain boattail hollowpoints, has a superior reduction in the risk of overpenetration which still keeping stopping power up. The same cannot be said for shotguns (absent the poorly advised birdshot) with slugs or buckshots, or even 9mm/45 ACP pistol carbines. The shorter and lighter 55 gr. bullets tend to keyhole when hitting a semi solid target like flesh (aka going into the target sideways). The old Mark VII .303 cartridge had the same going for it which increased its lethality quite a bit in fmj bullets. It tended to go into the target ass over teakettle when the lighter tip hit the target and levered the base of the bullet into the target. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 08:47 PM (ctrM5) 155

At least the older Cold War paradigm meant focusing on Soviets in Europe rather than fighting everything from brush wars to peer level adversaries from the savannahs, deserts, and plains, into the mountains. That means asking weapons to effectively be master of all trades which means insufficient normally in each theater compared with weapons for that. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 08:50 PM (ctrM5) 160

I still luv some of the old Westerns... Hopalong Cassidy days... when they would have their Six shooter pointed up, quickly bring it down and shoot, and the recoil would put it back up.... Like they were flinging bullets out the barrels...

Whig, what do you think about a suppressor on a home defense AR? I picked up an H&K MR556A4 with an 11" barrel with an Aimpoint RDS. It should do well in a similar role. But the muzzle blast and muzzle flash out of that 11" barrel are quite impressive. A suppressor would appear to be necessary to keep the noise and muzzle flash below the deafening and blinding thresholds.

Hullo morons!
I FINALLY won a Gunbroker 'gunbuster' parts kit for a G26, to go along with my G26 frame. The recoil spring was busted AF but I had a spare already and that worked. And I'm getting really good groups and finding it controllable and reliable at 7 yards. Sadly the Magtech ammo is not reliable, the 147 grn JHP is getting light primer strikes, but the CCI and Lawman ammo has been 100% so far. If you haven't tried a G26....it's pretty good. Especially with a G19 or G17 magazine. The 12 round Magpul Pmags mags have been good too. Only 100 rounds in but the OEM slide has been better and more accurate than the aftermarket slide I bought by mistake. On the whole, buy a new G26 instead of buying it piece by piece like I did. It'll be cheaper in the long run. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at May 18, 2025 08:57 PM (xcxpd) 167

Posted by: Ed L Absolutely a suppressor is needed for any home defense weapon but certainly for a short barrel AR. I have an AR pistol that I built for the hell of it and it has an 11.5 inch barrel with a carbine length gas system and adjustable gas key to alter the amount of gas thrown into the receiver. Blast is pretty bad at the indoor ranges despite using a forward compensator to throw a lot of that downrange. If I wanted to go to another platform, the 300 BO is much better behaved (or even the 6.8 SPC/6.5 Grendel) in short barrel lengths. The velocity of the 5.56 gas is what does it--gas coming out hot at 2700-3000 fps is like a sandblaster to suppressors in on SBRs. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 08:58 PM (ctrM5) 168

blake, about your cigar question. Actually soaking a cigar in liquor is not common, and as noted in the response from Itinerant Alley Butcher, often doesn't really turn out well.
Much more common, and often quite good, is infusing the tobacco (usually the wrapper leaf) but not immersing or soaking it. Ex-bourbon barrels are good for this. A few months ago I reviewed one of Perdomo's bourbon-barrel aged cigars - really good. At the moment I'm waiting to review a Diesel stick that was infused in sherry casks. First one was not good, I'm hoping that a few weeks of rest in the tupperdor will help (often does). Posted by: rhomboid at May 18, 2025 09:03 PM (1m82a) 178

sra blasters new Kimber CDS-9 got a red dot today. I wanted to get a super-tippy-top of the line Holosun for her.
BUT - the Kimber is cut to RMS-c and while the Holosun has an RMS-c to K adapter included that is going to add some height I think. Also, the Kimber plate takes the rear dovetail sights with it when you take it off. Which give you no back up irons which is a little sad because it has a very nice red fiber optic front sight. Ended up with a CVLife sight which I have a few of in their cheapie iterations. This one is not as expensive as a Holosun but is also not super cheap. Has an MRS (multi-reticle system) with a 32 MOA circle and 2 MOA dot. Has a side opening battery compartment, shake to wake, and a zillion hours battery life. AND green fiber optic rear sight. We have not yet taken this to the range. I think this makes us bad gun owners. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at May 18, 2025 09:08 PM (QfvaV) 188

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ====== Exception to the rule of revolvers being able to effectively use a suppressor. The Nagant used ammo with a brass case that expanded to seal the gas inside the chamber along with the cylinder mechanism pushing the whole cylinder forward as to eliminate almost all the gap between the chamber and the barrel throat. That allows a suppressor to be attached if you wanted that would work. Otherwise you would simply get the noise from the revolver gap. Nagant revolver ammo looks like an uncircumsized case hiding a bullet compared with other ammo. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 09:11 PM (ctrM5) 193

I liked the video on Newton-Cartan theory. It presupposes a strong background in differential geometry of space time which is not the expected skill set of someone just learning general relativity: so a bad way to begin, unless just happen to already know this stuff. Usually you learn “all this stuff” while learning general relativity, that’s why general relativity seems so often to be more math than physics, at least for the beginner. Minor cavil: I didn’t like that the speaker kept saying La Place. The two “a” are properly pronounced more or less the same: it’s someone’s name - Pierre-Simon Laplace. Also minor cavil that ρ > 0. What about the vacuum Casimir effect? But altogether quite enjoyable for someone who already knows the differential geometry math.

Unlike earlier versions, the A4 comes with an adjustable gas block to better accommodate suppressors.
Posted by: Ed L ===== Pretty much all my builds have an adjustable gas block as it makes it easier to tune them for the ammo you want to feed them apart from suppressor use. In a 20 inch 5.56 AR barrels, the blast is minimal but shorter definitely benefits from a suppressor. Going to other cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, and the 300 Blackout also decrease muzzle blast even in shorter barrels compared with the 5.56. Concerning the alternative AR chamberings, isn’t 6.8 supposed to be the short-range hard hitting target dropper? 300 BO could also work but is more for subsonic suppressed application. 6.5 Grendel is supposed to be the longer range specialist.
Speaking of 6.5 Grendel, almost finished my case prep work so I can try loading up my first reloads. I’m trying to reverse engineer the Hornady Black load which seems to work pretty well in my rifle. The most charitable thing I can say is that the Deep State Criminals will sleep well, there will be no arrests for four years, a reprieve, then when the demons regain power Conservatives will wish for a Rapture for what they will do in retribution because all that the Three Stooges did was announce to the Deep State that they can and will get away with anything. There is no justice in this world and the Three Stooges are just adding their part. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at May 18, 2025 09:38 PM (a4flb) 226

Evening, people.
Just finished watching Caddyshack (1980) for the first time. I was . . . underwhelmed. All the best lines and the most lively performance in the movie were from Rodney Dangerfield. The rest of the film -- especially Chevy Chase's performance -- was kind of flat. "The steak's still got marks from where the jockey was kickin' it!" [To the judge's wife] "Wow, you must really have been somethin' back before electricity!" That was the problem: I knew those lines, and expected there to be more in the same vein. There really wasn't. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 18, 2025 09:39 PM (omVj0) 229
Why not make it out of human bone (or the equivalent calcium based structure - no actual human bone needed)? It’s pretty good material, and probably won’t have enough time to wear out in use.

Next weekend we will be at blaster acres. Typically we carry our EDCs, take along the Ace of Spades Heritage Rough Rider with snake shot, and an EP9 for a truck gun.
I am thinking about storing some of the laager in Florida for reasons - so we won't have to be dependent on what we carry and take along, for one. But we don't have a full-time climate controlled location at this point. We have a shipping container that is secure enough though I would use a safe. That container gets HOT though. I don't see an easy answer - probably just wait. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at May 18, 2025 09:43 PM (QfvaV) 235
Concerning the alternative AR chamberings, isn’t 6.8 supposed to be the short-range hard hitting target dropper?
During the Vietnam War, its reported that for every enemy killed, over 50,000 rounds were fired. Given that, I don't think it really matters much what they are using as long as it is cheap, plentiful, easy to carry and makes a scary noise. Maybe the day will come when they can 3D print vertebrae from some kind of ceramic or tough plastic. Made in two halves, so they can be assembled around the spinal cord and bonded together.

Part of it is any major surgical trauma can reignite my psoriatic arthritis so it gets to be a never ending cycle. Spinal column has only mild central spinal cord stenosis now compared with severe foraminal stenosis in several joints and moderate in others. But,previously I had no central spinal cord stenosis. Watched it, the round is similar to the old Nagant in the bullet being enclosed by the case. Okay. It is the OTs-38 Strechkin revolver but it fires a cartridge with a little more firepower 135 ft/lb as a 22 LR and has a db signature of 110 db which is about the same as a silenced 22 LR.
Little more firepower than the old 32 Smith and Wesson Long. Posted by: whig at May 18, 2025 09:37 PM (ctrM5) Looked it up. The cartridge is necked down, and has a captive piston that drives the slug out, and is then stopped by the neck of the cartridge, retaining all the gas pressure in the cartridge case. Hence, silent. But the effective "barrel" length, i.e. the distance the gas expansion drives the bullet is only about an inch. Once the gas piston hits the stop, the bullet just coasts out of the barrel. I expect the spent cartridges slowly bleed off pressure, otherwise, they might be stuck in the cylinder. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 18, 2025 09:49 PM (ZwnGn) 247

213 Concerning the alternative AR chamberings, isn’t 6.8 supposed to be the short-range hard hitting target dropper? 300 BO could also work but is more for subsonic suppressed application. 6.5 Grendel is supposed to be the longer range specialist.
6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel have almost identical bullet drops up to about 400 yards where the Grendel begins to shine. It is more that hog hunters adopted the 6.8 SPC so there are a fair number of hunting rounds for it while the 6.5 Grendel did better in the long distance shooting game. I built one of both during the Obammy years so I figured at least one of those rifles would have ammo to shoot with. 6.5 Grendel also used to have cheap Russian made steel cased Wolf Ammo for it but that has dried up pretty much. I agree, and this would be true no matter who was running the FBI and DOJ. Where are the scalps of those who raided Mar a Lago? the Pipe-bomb grab-ass, the idiots who converted the Department of Peace into a bunker and had to be forced out, those who deleted terrabytes of damning evidence of misuse, those who violated all kinds of laws to give tax money to terrorists, the $5.2B in aid to the Huthis while the Navy was simultaneously pounding the same Huthis. There are thousands of embezzlers who DOGE has identified and has laid out their crimes. What we are learning is that you can embezzle billions, kill thousands, arm terrorists, give aid and comfort to the enemy, sell national security secrets and as long as you are a faithful Party Member, you never see any consequences except Generational Wealth for your crimes. "I upgraded to an AR15"
Question. I shot expert with M16A2 for 6 years. Nothing special, 226-232. It was easy but that's a credit to our PMIs. It So one year after my EAS, some poor girl sacrificed herself for humanity and said "I do". Her father takes us to range and lets me shoot one of his AR-15s. You would love this guy, he's an avid collector. He's was Army, then Texas Border Control. Being a Marine was enough to earn his trust for his daughters hand, but he's like that guy that ran the inquiry in Absence of Malice, so I've been walking on eggshells. But not this day. Today my reign as The Promised One begins. Pro-tip: shooting with your father-in-law automatically invokes Murphy. Read the terms and conditions of Manhood, Subsection 12v Voided If... Shot 1: no impact, no idea Shot 2: no impact, no idea Shot 3: no impact, no idea WTF Shot 4: no impact, no idea Shot 5 : no impact, no idea Thankfully, this was a time when I still possessed enough brain cells to know when to stop digging. And in my defense - no BZO and shooting from standing. It's also possible Army did a bit of sabo to keep me humble. But still, that doesn't account for how bad I shot. We have to stop doing that. And I understand why violence is bad, but our aversion to it has gone too far. I remember when it was acceptable as a last resort. Now just mentioning that summons the Glowie Witch-hunters. And the people that appoint themselves as such have poor analysis and don't care if they torch an innocent. We're already handicapped by GOP Impotence and Treachery. Adding Futility and the Hysteria of Salem is not sustainable. I don't know the solution, but a doc can diagnose a disease without knowing the cure. Maybe mass infiltration of the marxist movements?
