I gotta give Trump credit for this, I have always thought we could do more with tariffs, especially to even things out, but he has opened my eyes to how well a careful and smart use of the policy can be such a huge revenue generator, allowing the government to reduce other sources like taxes.
And when tariffs drive prices up on some goods... that is more or less a progressive tax like a sales tax: rich people will pay more. And because its only on some goods, everyone has choices how they want to approach how they buy and what they skip or do not. AND it increases manufacturing in the USA. Aaahh. The vampire defense.
Serial killer tries to dodge lethal injection with ‘vampire defense’ . . . Rogers’ attorneys have claimed he suffers from porphyria — a rare disease linked to vampire legends — and argued lethal injection could cause him extreme suffering. . . . . What is porphyria? Porphyria is a genetic condition that causes problems in the blood, skin and nervous system. The condition is caused by a buildup of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells. There are two types of porphyria: acute porphyria and cutaneous porphyria. Symptoms vary based on the type of porphyria, but can include: Severe pain in the stomach, chest, legs or back Muscle pain, tingling, numbness, weakness Breathing problems Seizures Itching Blisters on exposed skin - Drifter hitchhiking killer. One interesting thing . . . Rogers claimed that he committed the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. The NYT was whining today that they see no evidence "in the data" of their longed-for Trump Recession. Also, since inflation is receding in the most recent numbers, that obviously means the tariff caused uptick is coming "next month" or maybe the month after that, or maybe fourth quarter.

I am in favor of what the tariffs aim to effect, i.e. the return of much of the manufacturing jobs and industries to America. But there will be an initial cost in this long game, and that cost is this tariff money that the government received. Keep in mind every single dime of it was paid by the Importer, an American company and it will get passed on to the US consumer, NOT by any foreign companies. Yes, in time it will reduce the demand for the foreign goods and lots of other good stuff, but right now every single dime is paid for by Americans. It is an import tax. Yes, the design is to make us import less, absolutely. But that's down the (hopefully short) road.

I truly believe if Democrats grab the reins of our government again, they will try to ensure we never rise up against them again.
Posted by: Marcus T ===== I think the country splinters if that happens. Basically economics from prior debt will implode the national government if the Dems take over again. And identity politics is simply a means where your skin and sex becomes your uniform in a civil war. Marxism took its best shot and now is failing across the globe because it simply does not work in practice and neo Marxist identity politics likewise prevents the formation of a solid cohesive bloc like in Soviet Russia or China that allowed those countries to continue being Marxist until they go broke from internal contradictions. They can still cause a lot of damage but their decadent antics in public simply make them lunatics to be made fun of. Lunatics by definition are not cool and thus repellent to yutes. 107 Keep in mind every single dime of it was paid by the Importer, an American company and it will get passed on to the US consumer, NOT by any foreign companies.
Posted by: Mr. Bingley In practice, not so much. You might want to try discarding standard university texts on such matters as they are a source of great error on macroeconomics. In truth, it depends--in some nations, like China, they actually subsidize their products in order to ship them out the door. And thus, like in the first Trump term, literally eat the increased tariffs as a cost while the price to the US stays the same. Somewhere like France, however, would probably face decreased sales from increased prices and might choose to export elsewhere or raise prices. Then you have firms deciding whether or not to produce domestically, tariffs tend to encourage them to produce which may or may not result in price increases depending on how much labor versus capital is used in the production of the good. The way that tariffs play out is not found in most economic texts because the overwhelming tide was globalization. Texts earlier than the 1930's are required to understand them in practice. I had a short discussion from a young kid about tariffs the other day, he dislikes them but he seemed to dislike them most because of all the changes in the economy causing unpredictable problems. Too many disruptions at one time and he was worried about a collapse or worse.
He did not consider the possibility of the tariffs replacing taxes to be a valid argument, probably because "taxes only go up" I will have some time to talk with him later, hopefully it will be quieter and we can actually talk. Posted by: mrp Thus price of skilled labor goes up and encourages entry. We would have been far better off circa 2000 denying endless waves of H1B coolie labor in tech than in encouraging our own citizens from it. Instead, any citizen that went into it and invested in a career in tech was shunted aside for cheap labor from abroad. Ditto in college STEM programs in grad school. The reason why our universities are full of Indian and Chinese students in STEM is NOT because we do not have enough people with smarts to do it. It is because the imports are cheap coolie labor force for grantees and Americans would want living wages and benefits instead of endless post docs. Our universities are essentially wankers no less than Big Tech is. And DEI was in part designed to cover up that shit. They could focus on bringing in cheap talent from overseas instead of helping to fix our own damn science and math education in K12 so that natives would qualify. Also, because it is a world reserve currency and we have lots of it here, interest rates are low (because supply and demand works for money - especially for money) so banks are really eager to loan it out at easy rates. This seems like a good thing, but it makes private equity a better deal to borrow money to buy up companies that can be stripped of assets, and then parted out and sold off because it is a better deal to pay interest to make a lot of fast money than work for a living and earn . . . Posted by: Smell the Glove at May 14, 2025 06:08 PM (2ZThz) I looked into that quite a bit a while back and came away with the conclusion that their had been a silent civil war inside the Saudi Royal Family, with one side supporting Bin Laden in an attempt to anger America and stop us from supporting the King at the time; at which point the other side thought they could take over. (the oil wealth is always the prize) The reason that I believe America has been OK leaving this unexplored is that MBS and his father, King Salman, were the side *opposing* those who backed Bin Laden, and eventually defeated them. Over the next few years, as MBS (the Crown Prince) came into his own, there were quite a few "unusual" deaths and disappearances of their enemies, including some important members of the Royal Family. Part of the problem is that the USD is the world reserve currency, so the world wants dollars to trade amongst themselves more than they want US manufactured products, so we are at a disadvantage.
---------------- That demand for USD also keeps our currency somewhat artificially inflated vs. other currencies -- an advantage for us and disadvantage to other.
