Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - May 21, 2025 [TRex]

20250517-20241113-IMG_20241113_111312550_HDR1.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT. It is Ladies' night in the ONT jukebox! We're featuring female musicians. We are not featuring men that dress up as women, men that sing about women, or women that are trying to be men.

Warning: the ONT only has so much space. There are more female musicians of note than space, so your favorite has likely been omitted or the wrong song was chosen to represent your favorite artist. Oh well. You'll get over it. Cry, pout and throw virtual monkey poo in the comments (but do it respectfully and be entertaining).

[Top photo: Forsyth Park, Savannah, Georgia]

Early morning here, so won't be around long. JQ has the keys to the liquor cabinet. Legally Sufficient has the Ruler of Dread. Be good to each other.

***

Setting the tone:

***

Glorias are running wild!

***

Pair of Hearts:

***

Did you see the sign?

***

Patty Smyth is the warrior. The video is...umm...a period piece.

***

Hard to pick just one from Donna Summer:

***

Bananarama (I still don't know what the name means):

***

Sing it Belinda!

***

Only Kim Carnes could sing this song in this way:

***

And only Patsy Cline could record songs like this and make them her own:

***

Not sure where Norah Jones fits in musically with others, but she has a unique sound and wriggled her way into the ONT jukebox:

***

Dolly Dean:

***

Deep breathing with Faith Hill:

***

Tina was simply the best:

***

Pat Benatar had a great voice and this video is a tribute to WWII aviators:

***

All the old paintings on the tomb
They do the sand dance, don't you know?
If they move too quick (Oh-way-oh)
They're falling down like a domino

***

Go-Gos!

***

Juice (not the OJ variety)!

***

The Pittsburgh police scanner keeps giving:

20250517-carwash.jpg

20250517-Neighbor.jpg

20250517-tire.jpg

20250517-umbrella.jpg

***

Cool shell formation found randomly while walking on the beach. No idea what it is trying to tell me. Info might be in the sidebar.

20250519-NoVa MoMe.jpg

***

How many Peeps?

20250417-IMG_20250417_1.jpg

The answer is 205. Must be lots of peeps in the middle.

This was the closest guess. Congrats!

20250519-guess.jpg

***

Feels a little strange to feature the Weinermobile on Ladies' night, but here we are:

20250521-OscarMayer_Wienie500_HeroKV.jpg

Today, Oscar Mayer announces the "Wienie 500" - a first-of-its-kind spectacle where the fleet of Wienermobiles will haul buns to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a race unlike any other. Ahead of this year's Indianapolis 500, which draws more than 330,000 fans who consume nearly 30,000 hot dogs, Oscar Mayer's beloved Hotdoggers will make their racing debut on the very same track as the pros.

The Wienie 500 will also mark the first 'meat-up' of all six Wienermobiles in over a decade and the first competitive race for the fleet, each sporting an all-new look. Each Wienermobile will represent a different regional dog, including the Chi Dog (Midwest), New York Dog (East), Slaw Dog (Southeast), Sonoran Dog (Southwest) Chili Dog (South) and Seattle Dog (Northwest).

***

What a feeling! Flashdance for our big ONT finish:

49 A suggestion for the sleepless, Willowed from the last thread:

133 I listen to a CD (really a rip of the CD on my iPod that I’ve got hooked up to my sound system in the bedroom). It’s called “Sleep on a Train” and it has the sounds of an Amtrak sleeper car traveling down the Florida coast. Those tracks are riveted so you get that clickety-clack sound. The train starts out at the station with a call for “All Aboard,” and the doors being shut. Then the train slowly speeds up as the city is left behind and the driver opens her up for the country. It was recorded in real time and lasts over an hour while gradually fading the volume. It usually puts me to sleep in nothing flat…I do like train travel when I can do it: roomettes are better than a cabin for sleeping in my book. I think they used to call them bed-sitters… Just a thought.

I recall many years ago, maybe 20 or so, something like “an open letter to America” by a South African. The murders were common place then too, it was no secret, albeit suppressed by the usual media suspects, natch. My internet search skllz aren’t too good, but I bet it’s still extant somewhere.

Basically it was a prescient warning to the US saying “yeah, we had it goin’ on, and then the do-gooders and communists and levellers showed up, and now it all went to complete shit. We see the exact same thing in your future, if you are not extremely careful. Good Luck.”

None of this is new, in any case. What is truly remarkable is the media obsession with attempting to maintain a narrative that NOBODY believes, at all costs. They squandered their credibility decades ago, but they won’t quit, can’t quit. Orders is orders, I guess. I wouldn’t piss on ‘em if they were on fire.

136 We had a high schooler taking AP physics on campus call in a graduate student for carrying an umbrella that he (the high school student) thought looked like a weapon. Got the campus shut down, and my advanced classical mechanics class interrupted. And the graduate student, a former undergraduate physics major coming back for a master’s, so that he could teach physics, banned from campus for the rest of the semester. This guy was a real oddball, liked wearing kilts rather than pants (was no way tranny or effeminate - just odd). The rest of the faculty thought they were doing him a favor, teaching him to be aware of consequences - yeah consequences for carrying an umbrella - he was actually bringing a box of donuts to put in the break room for everybody. So, the upshot was, he quit the master’s program and last I heard was teaching nuclear physics for the Navy for the USW guys. I hope he got on well after that, I have lost touch.

1. In the northeast, a force of perhaps 100 Ukrainian commandos walked through a large forest to the nearest Russian city and made nuisances of themselves. While they were walking, the Russians hit their base camp with a missile, resulting in between six (Ukrainian count) to 70 (Russian count) dead.
The Ukrainians are rumored to want to replace their top general, as the current one has had nothing but defeats. Yeah, change the general, that's the solution to the problem.
3. In the southeast, the Russians are starting to collapse another big pocket. How many Ukrainians will be able to scramble out of it is unknown.

223 Given the last 15 years of performance by NAVSEA, with combatant ship-building, that North Koh-rean mishap doesn't seem so bad. Of course the crappy USN ships in question have launched just fine, it's just that they're pretty useless in different ways and many weren't built properly. Right now we're at a break-point on the third consecutive combatant ship charlie foxtrot, the Constellation cruiser/super-frigate/kinda destroyer whatever you want to call it. And this one involved taking an off-the-shelf Euro design and effing it up. Disaster!

Thinking/hoping NAVSEA will get burned down/fixed up, and Koh-rean and possibly Japanese yards may provide some of the muscle to get things built while (if?) the US industrial base recovers its ship-building prowess.

244 I've been tossing around a theory the last few weeks regarding the new trend of the weird "Key Takeaways", "Why it Matters" headings that now infest most major "news" sites.

My conclusion? Well I thought initially it was just shaping and controlling the thoughts and feelings of the readers. And I'm not discounting that. But I have since realized that principally they are being written that way to pre-digest content and narratives for the *AI systems* that will be searching them and reporting on what is happening.

Basically preloading the AI systems that will be totally dominant in a few years in terms of how people get their news (note how google has their AI box right at the top of many searches) with the "narrative". If articles are forced to be more creative or written in varied ways, AI - a pattern recognizer - might draw conclusions and pass along information that is not seen through the intended lens. By telling the systems right in the articles the "keys" the "whys" and the "deeper meanings" those systems will have limited options of what they "see" because the info is already right there for them. And yes of course it's a fucking leftard conspiracy.

Rock legend Pete Townsend says Bruce Springsteen ruined everyone’s night when he brought politics to the stage.

He’s a bit over rated to begin with, He’s the kind of bloke who should just shut up and play.

345 Headed up north tomorrow up below the Peace river, inland from Punta Gorda, to go to a nice free outdoor shooting range. We'll do handguns at 5 and 7 yards.

Punta Gorda means fat point, the shape of the land at the north side of the river bay. Port Charlotte is on the north shore across from P.G., and doesn't have a nice old historic downtown as does P.G.

@grok 12h
No verifiable evidence supports the claim that Pete Townshend said Bruce Springsteen is "overrated" or "should just shut up and play."

Extensive searches of credible sources, like Rolling Stone, find no such quote. Townshend criticized Springsteen's shows as "blood and glory" in a 2015 interview, but this differs from the alleged statement.

The quote appears fabricated or misattributed, suggesting @GuntherEagleman may have misled his audience. However, Townshend's history of blunt remarks leaves room for doubt, though no direct evidence backs the specific claim.

348 [Within Temptation is] my favorite among that style of band (Epica, Delain, Evanescence, Tristania, Nightwish, The Gathering, etc etc)
Here's a duet with Anneke van Giersbergen (former singer of The Gathering):

Not in the same genre per se, but Lacuna Coil fills this slot in my playlist. Probably well worth seeing in concert if you dig this kind of thing. The female vocalist (there are two, her and a guy) is really something else.
Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls

I'd include them. But yes, slightly different with the "Beauty and the Beast" vocal pairing. Nightwish and Tristania do some of that, too. For that matter, Within Temptation was like that for their first couple albums; now they bring in guest vocalists when they want that sound.

Same concert as the link above, with George Oosthoek from Orphanage for the growls:

https://youtu.be/K-yow3dadDk?&t=30

Cued up to 30 seconds in, since the pyrotechnics going off during the opening overpower the mics and sound like ass. They sound like ass on the DVD, too, but even more like ass on youtube.

427 The Bangles rendition of Walk Like An Egyptian transfixed Orlok. Even though I have encountered very few Egyptians that adopted such a method of pedestrian progress, the song was a winner for this all-too-ancient Count. When Susannah Hoffs pulled off that mesmerizing glance from one angle to another, I was smitten. Alas, Orlok, I reflected, if only you were alive and 500 years younger, you could well have had a chance with this appealing young vixen. Yes, I know, very, very unlikely, but a Nosferatu can dream, yes?

463 The page reloaded and I wasn’t sure I got the Diana Ankudinova post out. Yes, I see it. She’s had some sort of heartbreak that she is only hinting at in her songs. This is besides the already public tragedy of her early childhood. That family you see in the Homeland video is her adoptive family. She is a really funny girl and has a depth to her you just don’t see in someone so young. She also has this incredible voice and it has brought her fame and fortune. But here she is, heartbroken. God bless her and save her for Heaven, Lord. Thy will be done. Amen.

For sure. I remember the late 90s here on Memorial Day Weekend, always hot. One time, it hit a hundred. I used to go to the beach on Long Island in May, not necessarily to go into the frigid water, but definitely the beach. If it was hot enough, a quick bracing dip felt great.
