Army secretary says US tanks will have to hang back to avoid getting killed by cheap drones

The heavy losses have led to assessments that tanks may be obsolete in wars dominated by drones. However, Driscoll recently told BI that the role of US tanks will change rather than disappear. Instead of combined-arms assaults led by armor, where tanks are the first to hit the front lines and lead breaching operations, uncrewed systems may spearhead the charge instead.

Driscoll said that tanks will stay in safe, defended positions until there is a clear path that allows them to move forward. This is a break from the traditional role of tanks, but it is seen by military planners as necessary in a world where armored vehicles worth millions can be easily picked off by drones worth as little as a few hundred bucks.

Using cheap drones to destroy expensive armored vehicles has proven to be an effective asymmetrical warfare tactic. US forces have enjoyed air superiority in recent conflicts, not needing to be constantly looking up for enemy airpower. That's changing with drones.

It seems to me, armchair general that I am, that we may be at an inflection point in warfare, much as WWI was an inflection point. Drones change everything. Or do they? I think we may be close to being able to deploy mobile, Iron Dome type defensive vehicles, armed with lasers, that completely nullify or severely mitigate, the drone threat. What do y'all think?

Useless

What Is The Point Of Having A GOP Congress?

But now that they’ve been given the reins of power, many congressional Republicans have shown little interest in actually governing in accordance with the pitch they made to voters just a few short months ago.

On Wednesday, reporting surfaced that a cabal of House Republicans is fighting efforts to end the flow of federal taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, which also offers harmful chemical and surgical castration procedures. According to NOTUS, this group of lawmakers — which reportedly included Republican Reps. Mike Lawler, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Jen Kiggans — “made it clear to House GOP leadership that they oppose adding a measure to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood” to the House’s reconciliation package.

So, if slashing the taxpayer subsidization of entities that terminate unborn babies isn’t on the budget chopping block for Republicans, then what is?

It’s apparently not fully repealing Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act or making significant reforms and reductions to Medicaid. Congressional GOPers have come out opposing both options over the course of the party’s reconciliation negotiations.

We've made progress, but it's plain that we need a long march through our own institutions to rid our ranks of GOPe scum. I just don't know if we have time.

Interlude: Tool Time!

First An American Pope, Now This

American tourist becomes the first man in over 1,500 years to be impaled at the Colosseum

But at 5 p.m. on Friday, when the 47-year-old tourist (who has American citizenship but is a "resident of Taiwan") climbed the fence at the Piazza del Colosseo, impaled himself, screamed until he passed out, and nearly bled to death, the crowds had a different reaction:
Visitors looked on in horror, according to Italian news outlets.
‘It was terrible,' commented one tourist, an eyewitness of the tragedy. ‘I saw that man skewered on a railing, and he couldn't free himself on his own.'

Speaking of the pope, since he is now an elected official from Chicago, does that mean that it's inevitable that he'll be arrested on federal corruption charges? We'll see how he does, but I'm not a big fan. He's one of the guys that was behind removing the wonderful Bishop Strickland from his post for publicly stating that the church should, I dunno, maybe follow the teachings of Christ.

Liberal Women: A Theory

Why so many woman get manipulated into being liberals

George Orwell once wrote women are always and inevitably on the side of the state. He wasn't being misogynistic, he was making a psychological observation. In his view, women, particularly in their role as caregivers and moral enforcers, tend to prioritize safety and compassion over risk and freedom, and that instinct, while natural, is easily weaponized by totalitarian systems. When conformity is marketed as compassion, control is rebranded as care, the state taps into the feminine psyche to enforce ideological obedience.

I Like Trains

Sir Rod Stewart reveals his epic model railway city

He told Railway Modeller he worked on the skyscrapers and other scenery while on tour, requesting an extra room for his constructions in his hotels.

"We would tell them in advance and they were really accommodating, taking out the beds and providing fans to improve air circulation and ventilation," he said.

The scenery and structures are his forte, rather than the locomotives and tracks. "I find beauty in what everyone else sees as ugly - rugged skyscrapers, beaten-up warehouses, things that are very run down."

Photos of the layout show dozens of highly detailed buildings plus bridges, ships, vegetation and streets teeming with vintage cars and taxis.

"When I take on something creative like this, I have to give it 110%," he said. "For me it's addictive. I started, so I just had to finish. I'm lucky I had the room. If I'd have realised at the start it would have taken so long, I'd have probably said, 'No! No! Nah!'"

Pictures at the link, it's pretty epic.

Road Rage

This road-rage incident is seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen (don't worry, he survived)

Video at link. I make it a point not to antagonize other drivers when I'm on four wheels, much less when I'm on two.

Light bulb over head. Oh, yeah; duh!

So, I've been going back through old Froglegs episodes trying to find that, watching them at 2X. What's weird is how so much of what we're still fighting was going on then, from Political Correctness to ghei "marriage" to criminal invaders to RINOs. Hi Bulg.

Things are moving along. I hope you're well.

We can't be the only people with inheritance stories where people turned crappy. People need to share. I could use a few stories.

For anyone else that wants to share, here's my contribution.

I took care of Mom and Dad for about 15 years after moving back from South Korea. Dad died at 90. Mom passed eight years later, this year at 88.

We had no unexpressed thoughts. I'm still recovering.

Despite taking care of them, I never wanted more than 50% of anything with my brother. But since I was a caregiver---most thankless profession ever---I wanted a year to get my life together, find a job, develop income streams.

He's been making that difficult.

52 I don't understand something. Drone defense - all you need is for the tank to have a dome on top of it. The dome has a radar, and bristles with shotguns. If anything approaches from above, or the sides of the tank, say within 25 feet, it fires a rapid shotgun blast at it. You could have a couple hundred rounds in the shotguns. The drones are low speed, unarmored. The bombs are just motor round for the most part. A single pellet hits the drone and that's it. It either explodes or falls to the ground.

Easy. Popes have always died in office, for the last 600 years. No Pope ever retired. But benedict was old and sick, and decided the church needed more active guidance than he was capable of giving. So, he just said "I retire." Since this never happens, nobody knew what to do. But everyone decided that it wasn't that bad an idea to let Popes quit if they are ill or tired, so they made up the title of Pope Emeritus to cover Benedict.

As I stated, it is not legally possible for a 13-year old to be "convinced" to carry and give birth nor is it safe or advisable. She should never have conceived.

Soldiers need to climb on and off the tank, and willy-nilly spray and pray might get the lead drone, but are you really going to be able to re-load a hundred shotguns in the five minute interval before the next drone comes a creepin'? Plus, the inside of a tank isn't exactly spacious as it is, so finding room for all these extras would be a challenge.

71 Here's the rest of my story...

I'm in the house where I took care of Mom for years. The dog is with me, old, limping, I'm doing my best to keep him going.

It's a big house. Our realtor cousin appraised it at $520,000 to $540,000 Canadian. Which is crazy. It's a big house in a small town but everything in Canada has gone insane.

My brother was fine with $250,000. We'd avoid realtor fees. But after probate cleared, he immediately wanted to come to town to pull money out of the bank. I asked him about the house. He said after talking with friends and the cunt wife, he didn't want to hold a mortgage.

I told him don't come to town, the remaining money in the probate account will stay there until my living situation is resolved.

I was at the lawyer this week. He will now hold a mortgage. I am looking at other options. But since I'm unemployed after being a caregiver for so long, I'd pay more than he wants.

I actually have enough precious metals to pay him off, But gold is on fire and I'd like to keep that. I have enough money to keep me comfortable for a bit while I develop a life.

I didn't expect all this drama after my parents passed.

Suck it up Princess....

Military history is a never-ending cycle of a dominating new offensive weapon or tactic eventually countered by a new technical defensive measure (i.e., thicker or different armor) or tactic. We are at the mid-point of the latest of these cycles in land warfare. I hope DARPA and smart people in the Army, Marines, and Air Force are on a winning and rapid path to countering the cheap drone and drone swarm threat.

Laser weapons are limited in a lot of ways. The big problem is carrying enough juice for the lasers.

But I can imagine you can screw up laser weapons systems in a lot of ways - reflective paint on the targets or "smoke" bombs that are opaque and/or refractive to the frequency of the laser...

80 We don't need Laser armed drone defense... we could do it with .30 or .50 cals... just tied to a radar system...

You know, like the ones we had in the fucking Cold War?

Network platforms together so they constantly shift which platform if actually emitting Radar... then shift that data between platforms for defense.

Or, just do broad beam High power Jamming... all those drones are controlled by someone.

I vaguely recall a law to mandate PP report cases where a girl comes in for an abortion in statutory rape type cases failing in some red state. PP argue that the state was trying to track rape victims to harass them or something and that actually worked.

105 Stateless,

One of my wife's best friends is going through the same thing since her mother died.

The friend has been a practicing attorney, a judge, on state commissions, etc.

Her sister is being so neurotic about the estate, that we have had to go down and visit once and talk the friend back down to a normal blood pressure on the phone twice.

This sister is accusing her of stealing, scheduling an appraiser one day and then cancelling them the next, and then threatening to sue the appraisal company because they have said they won't work with her, etc.

The sister is a loon, and she has almost broken a very tough and smart woman. I think that is because it is her mother's estate. To anyone else acting like that, my wife's friend would just tell them to "get bent".

Good luck getting everything resolved nicely on your end.

I guess my only advice would be, do everything in writing (emails and texts), but don't write anything when you are emotional. Only write it when you are calm and in a good place.

Not entirely. The problem is that "drones" is a REALLY large category. Some of the drones are hobbyist-size with grenades rigged underneath them. Easily taken care of with your shotgun. Some of them are much larger, carrying 250lb bombs and faster - maybe you can knock it down with a shotgun, but it will fall ballistically and might still hit your tank, depending on altitude and how far away you manage to hit it. Then some are actually the size of a small airplane with a lot of explosives packed in them - basically crude cruise missiles. Not so easy to defeat.

Both the people saying "all of warfare has changed!" AND the people saying "oh, please, just shoot them down" are likely wrong.

Yeah. I couldn't imagine how stressful this could be.

I'm in a worse state because I was a caregiver for Mom for years. There are pictures my friends' daughters have drawn of us with Mom holding onto my arm. Mom needed me. I have to develop a life now.

I wonder how people go so nuts.

My brother doesn't really need the cash. Mortgage paid off.

I do admit that I am going a bit crazy, but that's simply because I don't know where I will be living in a while.

But smarter sub-munitions. Programed to home in on anything moving in its range or meeting the target profile.

Thing is, cluster bombs are frowned upon and those of the scatterable mine type are pretty much 'outlawed' because too many blow up little kids years later.

I'd think widespread use of these things may actually intensify conflict in what might just be a border skirmish. So...

Drones would have to maintain individual control less spec-ops / terrorists infiltrate the enemy's capital and other sensitive behind the lines areas and raise hell where they cannot unleash drones in areas with their own civvies.

Mom's probate was pretty quick. About 2 months. We are in a smaller Canadian farming community.

After my father passed, we set most things out for quick payment by listing us as beneficiaries. And thanks to Trudeau, money was taken out of the Canadian Stock Market where it could be taken with a few lines of code and put into gold and silver and out of government hands.

My share could buy out my brother but I'd like to keep the gold and just see where I am in the rest of the year.

Thank you for sharing your story.

Military science since forever has sought to find the means to deliver the minimal necessary killing force at a fatally-vulnerable location on an enemy soldier, fortification, ship, land vehicle, ship/sub, or aircraft, as quickly, reliably, en-masse, and inexpensively as possible. And contrary to it's name, you can use it to create relation diagrams, workflow diagrams, entity diagrams, etc.

The number of tools out there to build applications is staggering, which begs the question, if there are so many tools to help people build applications, why does everything suck?

1. Putin's 3 day Victory Day truce seems to be holding up fairly well, even if Ukraine didn't formally agree to it. If nothing else, Ukraine gets a three day respite from missile attacks. Still some fighting going on in several locations.
2. One of the locations is the latest cross-border excursion into Russia in the northeast, where Ukrainian forces are busy capturing a couple of villages and a few potato fields at an appalling cost, apparently for propaganda purposes.
3. In the far south, there are rumors that the Russians have crossed the river and established multiple footholds near Kherson. Big if true.

218 Military science since forever has sought to find the means to deliver the minimal necessary killing force at a fatally-vulnerable location on an enemy soldier, fortification, ship, land vehicle, ship/sub, or aircraft, as quickly, reliably, en-masse, and inexpensively as possible. 228 Hi Stateless. I was in a good spot where I could work from home the couple of years I took care of my dad. And dad had done quit claim deeds. He had three properties, sis got the house and land she's been renting in ND, I got dad's house here on CO. Brother got some farmland in ND. I got stuck being the executor, and it sucks to deal with that crap even with the big stuff pre-handled as my dad had done. The sibs have been fine, but thank god I don't have to deal with their SOs. Bro has insulated me his grasping wife. Sis felt the need to let me know B thought they kind of got screwed. Which by property valuation is true but aint anything I could do about it. I gave sis dad's pickup and more than a third of what was left in his bank acct and we are good at least. Sorry your bro is being a cad. Caregiving is a lonely thing. Suprisingly so, many people have to deal with it at least at the level of picking out a facility, and a lot of folks do the personal care, it seems like there would be all kinds of support groups in person and online but I never found much. Maybe one needs to ask the parents' doctor, I was hobbled there by my distrust after the covid BS.

234 ... women being manipulated into being liberals ...

One of the generations in my family has this issue. Lovely, sweet, smart young ladies have gone round the bend. They are smart but have zero discernment and somehow have no recognition of leftist evil. They passionately believe things that are obviously false and are constantly cultivating fear and outrage. One was saying that she warns all of her hispanic clients to always carry proof of citizenship with them or else Trump will have them kidnapped and deported even though they are citizens. This is especially crazy because I have never seen her express this concern about her hispanic in-laws. Another has undergone surgery to not just tie, but completely remove, her fallopian tubes because Trump is going to deny women access to reproductive health. She almost didn't survive the surgery.

On the other side of the family, the young women are marrying and happily bearing many babies and are enjoying fulfilling lives. There's fear on one side of the family and joy on the other. The difference is stark.

236 Use radar to detect and switch to EMP pulse to destroy with, if possible, the same antenna array. You can switch from wide to narrow beam with a phased array. If you can’t get enough transmitted power that way, use a dedicated antenna fo each task. More importantly use smart profiling. This was what made clearing roadways of IEDs so slow. Radar would give a “hit” for every object, typically a buried, squashed metal can. That is very unlikely to be the IED you’re looking for, but it takes time to clear away the junk buried in the roadbed, so slow. What should you be looking for, not a big, bright, and broad signal like a can, but short leads, switches, some sort of circuitry for a trigger. That’s what you want to find! And you can do it, too, train your system on bright bubbles (sorry sonar analogy) of things like tin cans. Then train your system to ignore those signals (it’s easy just invert everything at input, high signals become low and low signals get amplified - you start finding a lot more IEDs (and lost cell phones, ok) and a lot less metal cans. This can be raised up in the air, and with suitable adjustments made to look for drones, and swat them, quick.

Those "interventions" cause the uterine lining to shed whether the woman has conceived or not, sweeping the embryo out. This kills the embryo, of course.

If a woman has a chance to conceive, her egg has already been released from the ovary by the time the sexual contact has occurred. Those "emergency contraceptives" do not prevent sperm from reaching the egg.

Well. My house was the very embodiment of the California dream. It was my crowning achievement as a man, a provider, and a father. It would have funded my son's future and my very comfortable retirement.

When my wife and I agreed to divorce, I had hopes that I might be able to buy her out with more money than she ever had in her life, and even borrow against it down the road if she needed more. This was an asset that is now valued at over $1M, and we got in at less than half that. I may as well have been explaining quantum physics to her. Nope, she decided to go scorched earth, and my resources were diverted to defending my paternal rights.

I mourn the loss of that place. Last night there, I was looking out of the master bedroom on a dark night and watch a great meteor stream across the sky. I took that as God's promise that He would carry my son and I through this if my faith didn't waiver. I won't say that I always held up that bargain, but over fifteen years on, I am at peace with where I am now...

The Russians drilled a super-deep wellbore: The Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3 is the deepest human-made hole on Earth, which attained maximum true vertical depth of 12,262 meters, over 40.000 feet. They quit when the hole kept squeezing in on their tools. At that depth and temperature, the rock is plastic, like clay.

275 When my wife and I agreed to divorce, I had hopes that I might be able to buy her out with more money than she ever had in her life, and even borrow against it down the road if she needed more.

Before you get to liquid magma, you are going to enter a realm where the rock is so plastic it has the consistency of putty, and lithostatic pressure will cause it to close in around the drill bit and trap it. The Russians encountered this in the Kola super-deep well bore. Pumping really cold water-based mud to chill the rock may gain you a couple thousand meters into that realm, but sooner or later you are up against thermal and mechanical limits.

321 Both my grand mothers had their first babies at 13. Both of those girls had their first kids at 14. There isn't anything inherently unsafe about giving birth at 13, although nowadays there's probably not a 13 year old who is mentally/emotionally ready. But 12 or 13 is the average age of first menses, so the body is fully prepared. The average maybe younger now that obesity rates are so high.

Not here to judge a rape victim for having an abortion, but it's still murder. I certainly understand why; again, no judgment, especially at 13.

327 > But I'm wondering what happened that dragged on 5 years.

In my case, the decedent was known to have a will, whose general provisions were known, but it couldn't be located. Relatives who weren't in the will saw this as their Big Opportunity to cash in. Those who were known to be in the will dragged their feet, in case the will should turn up (understandably, IMO). Fortunately the will DID turn up (among some legal papers belonging to another deceased relative, as it turns out.... perhaps the decedent gave it to him for safekeeping? Unknown). Now, one would think that the relatives who weren't in the will would just accept that fact and move on.

One would assume wrong.

Yours truly is in the middle of all this. I'm not in the will either, and knew I wasn't, but I'm glad, even though I'd have gotten a chunk of money and property if it hadn't.

I'm the one who found the will. No one else knew about it. I had a paper shredder literally right next to me when I found it (I was going through the other deceased relative's papers, disposing of old receipts and such).

The heirs are very lucky I'm the one who found it, not one of the others.

345 The Baluchs are sort of the sleeper in both Pakistan and Iran. Actually their odds are better in Iran, which is a multi-ethnic state with tremendous pressure on the unpopular religious autocracy. Some success in Pakistan might help/embolden them in Iran. One can hope.

Have no idea, but imagine a new regime in Tehran would by definition be looking to get off people's necks, unleash the economy, and "get along". Can see such an outfit making an autonomy deal with the Baluchi south.

352 I've always had a soft spot for the Baloch. Fierce fighters.

I can't remember if they're the ones who have feisty women. One of my brothers was in Afghanistan for several deployments and he talked a little about a specific ethnic group with women who were crazier than the men. Not all the women, but maybe a certain tribe within a larger group. They refused to cover up, and I think some were tattooed. He said the Taliban were afraid of them and left them alone. 🤣

354 Chilly weather in Moscow. Looks like the parade will have T-34s, and infantry in WWII uniforms with Mosins. This is normal and a great part of the spectacle.

Most modern Nukes are dial a Nuc... depending on how you set the tritium (if I remember correctly)...

So, ya just dial em up.

Posted by: Romeo13 at May 09, 2025 01:18 AM (QAkQ3)

368 There are several kinds of maintenance issues with nuclear weapons, depending on the particular design. Most common are decay of tritium (used in boosted fission designs), and the effects of heat on circuitry.

I don't think there is any reason to think either India or Pakistan lack the competence or resources to deal with both. These are crown jewel national programs and both countries have plenty of talented engineers.

370 You think the US nuclear arsenal is in tip top shape? Probably better than Russia’s. Not sure if Red China’s bombs are at all reliable for multiple reasons. Which is worse: having a reliable nuke and using it or having an unreliable nuke and trying to use it? Not counting all the small arsenals of the littles: India, Pakistan, Israel, Formerly Great Britain, France, etc. My theory is that if you only have a few you are leery of using any, since then you might have to use them all, and then where would you be?

Ended up destroying a bunch of satellites in LEO, including Telstar 1, the first satellite that carried transcontinental video and telephone. “The People’s Colonel” is what they’ll call me. ¡Viva el Coronel!

Convoy of US war jeeps starts end-of war celebrations
04/30/2010

A convoy of American war jeeps drove through Prague on Friday at the start of celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII and the liberation of western Bohemia from the Nazis by the US 3rd army. The largest Czech city General Patton’s men freed in 1945 was Plzen - about 80 kilometres south-west of Prague – where the biggest celebrations with US war veterans are due to take place over the weekend.

Today the new Pope is my age, just 18 days older, both of us born in IL. And he grew up in Dolton, just a few miles from Jules in Chicago Hts.

Weird, just weird.
