China really needs to work on the whole "making friends" thing. They seem to have alienated pretty much the entire world. Posted by: Maroon at May 09, 2025 03:50 PM (O+RGJ) ======= The effect of tariffs on the consumer has been blown way out of proportion. It's a fee on wholesale importer prices, which is a long way down the stream from consumer retail prices. Throw in the fact that there's always the option to move distribution channels in a world that's been moving away from China being the manufacturing hub, the fact that the single largest import is energy related while prices are cratering there anyway while Trump opens up energy production in America through deregulation, and that most of our consumer goods are actually made in the US (roughly 81% in 2019), and you've got a recipe for: tariffs actually don't affect prices all that much. Sure, countries like India will play along for awhile when it's to their benefit, but ultimately, they'd like nothing better than to eat China's lunch by taking their business. The only countries that are really willing to work with China are international pariahs like Russia, Iran, and NoKo.

And prices for everything are going up.
****** I am baffled by how the left keeps repeating this line. Its not true. SOME things are going up, but almost no consumer goods yet. Mostly its manufacturing goods like raw materials for building, parts like bolts etc. That means that prices will go up, but its not happening on a broad scale right now and almost nothing consumers regularly buy are affected yet. Prices have dropped. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 09, 2025 04:02 PM (2VST1) The Donks, like the treasonous Commie scum they are, are attempting to frighten American consumers with the mantra, "Tariffs cause inflation (tm)!" While prices might increase on goods that are being tariffed, that's not inflation. The consumer can make an informed decision and not make a purchase. Inflation is caused by bad fiscal policy: like injecting billions of dollars into the economy during the Biden "administration." That devalued the currency and resulted in too much money chasing too few goods. There is no way for the consumer to escape that bad deal. Yeah but to your average lofo regular guy on the street, that's a distinction without a difference. All that matters is that prices went up, no matter how an economist would define it. And fair enough that is a valid complaint. Posted by: Ian S. at May 09, 2025 04:01 PM From people who watch this stuff, Europe and the UK hold more US debt than China does. China has been divesting, but Yellen was selling Eurolandia all the short term bonds she could at the lowest interest she could manage. This acted like a QE for Joe, and it helped the EU fund their own debt since they could get the bonds and then use them as collateral for their own debt. The rate hike by the Fed has got the EU and member states in a pickle since they have to refinance under higher rates, just like the housing market here in 2007 I am told Spain has just put capital controls on bank accounts, fining depositors for not reporting withdrawing more than 3,000 Euros a day. A banking system does not put capital controls like this unless they expect a run, or are in serious ick. Posted by: Kindltot at May 09, 2025 04:35 PM (D7oie) 228

While prices might increase on goods that are being tariffed, that's not inflation. The consumer can make an informed decision and not make a purchase.
Yeah but to your average lofo regular guy on the street, that's a distinction without a difference. All that matters is that prices went up, no matter how an economist would define it. And fair enough that is a valid complaint. But what I think people will figure out is that while the prices on some stuff will go up, its only going up on some of it, and you can work around it if you are clever, and the increases won't be long-term. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 09, 2025 04:30 PM (2VST1) That is the opposite of what is going on here. Explaining why stuff is expensive now is easy. You want that expensive body cream from France, well, they ban all food exports and car exports and we are just getting even. Find a replacement. Conflating it with inflation is just a lie. The WSJ, however, came out with an amazing article on Wed discussing how China has stopped giving economists macro numbers - some going back 4 or 5 years. They are in big trouble. All it will take is a little push for them to come to the table.
It isn't just the obvious stuff they've stopped reporting. They know that nobody trusts their numbers, and use other indirect measures of economic activity. The simplest example was electricity usage, so they stopped reporting such things. Their mania with controlling the flow of information manifests in some really odd ways, e.g. the size of elementary school toilets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL8YssuPvYE You can start at 2:10 to hear about the toilets. This was how Julius Caesar gained so much power so fast in Rome. Yes his military campaigns were important but he GOT those jobs because he built power up by taking huge loans from nearly everyone. Posted by: Oldcat at May 09, 2025 04:35 PM (8avO+) The trade imbalances exist are because we started printing money. Look at when the persistent US trade deficit took hold: it was the mid-70s. After the collapse of Bretton Woods. We need to reshore industry, but the simple fact is if prices go up, people have to pay more or buy less, and the latter just isn't an option. But we have inflation either way. So I'm particularly worried about tariffs. They're a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of trillions of USD floating around the world. No. Taxes don't make money disappear, they're just a reshuffling of money. Taxes can be inflationary, and I'd argue most are.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at May 09, 2025 04:01 PM (l3YAf) ====================== It's always provocative when someone who knows little presumes to start a comment with "No." From my macro econ text book from many moons ago: Taxes are generally considered deflationary because they reduce disposable income and spending, which in turn decreases aggregate demand. This reduction in demand can put downward pressure on prices across a broad range of sectors, as shown by research indicating that higher average personal income tax rates lower prices. Japan has a serious obsession with quality. They take foreign stuff and make it better. The Arisaka uses a Mauser bolt, but the Japanese refined it to the strongest of any used during WW II.

China has a moral code that everyone ignores because it makes no difference to their life whatsoever. Buddhism tells people to be good because their rebirth will be better, and Taoism teaches people to be good because their purpose is to serve those better than them stoically but none of that pays off in this life. There's no higher good. There's no holiness or judge. There's no savior to appeal to and love. Its just hard and painful and get what you can while you can. So quality doesn't matter, who gets hurt doesn't matter, it just matters how you enjoy yourself because f the future and human life means nothing. No, it started 60 years earlier. The post-war stuff was rough because they were putting things back together, but the workmanship on Japanese military arms is outstanding.
