Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | American Pope Elected, Robert F. Prevost; He's Addressing the CrowdThey counted votes far faster than Arizona. "Habemus Papam!" White smoke began pouring from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Thursday, signaling the College of Cardinals has chosen a successor to Pope Francis. And now the world waits to learn who he is. Riotous applause and cheers erupted from the faithful crowd of thousands gathered at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, where eyes had been glued to the simple chimney since the secretive conclave process began just over a day ago. White smoke finally appeared just after 6 p.m. local time on the cardinals' fourth vote -- following one vote Wednesday and two earlier Thursday that ended in failure and black smoke. All eyes have now turned to the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica overlooking the square, where the new pope will soon emerge to the proclamation "Habemus Papam!" -- Latin for "We have a pope!" When he arrives, the new pontiff will be dressed in traditional white papal vestments in the Room of Tears -- a small space next to the Sistine Chapel that supposedly got its name from the emotion felt by the new pope in those moments. Whoever was chosen met the two-third majority required to be named -- meaning at least 89 votes from the 133 cardinals who joined the conclave voted in their favor. Some background on Prevost: t is typically absurd to think of an American as pope. But in this conclave, a Chicago-born Augustinian friar who has spent much of his life outside of the United States is worthy of serious consideration. Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, heads the influential Vatican Dicastery for Bishops, the office tasked with advising the pope on bishop appointments around the world. While cardinals have been gathering after the death of Pope Francis, Prevost's star appears to be rising as Cardinal Pietro Parolin's candidacy seems in trouble. Prevost could become the candidate for those seeking a curial insider who is not Parolin, after the Vatican secretary of state's lackluster homily on Sunday raised concerns about a charisma gap. Some cardinals already had their eye on Prevost because of his global experience. Though he may be American by birth, he has spent only a third of his life in the United States, instead spending much of the rest of it in Europe and Latin America. He's only been in charge for two years, taking over from Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who held the post for 15 years and helped leave a conservative imprint on the Catholic hierarchy. "We are often worried about teaching doctrine, but we risk forgetting that our first duty is to communicate the beauty and joy of knowing Jesus," Prevost, in one of his few interviews, told Vatican News, the news portal of the Holy See. Below, the live feed from the Vatican.

I am perfectly fine with communicating "the beauty and joy of knowing Jesus"; in fact, this message is one of the things I most appreciate about my own pastor. Cut and paste from College of Cardinals Report:
On key topics, Cardinal Prevost says little but some of his positions are known. He is reportedly very close to Francis’ vision regarding the environment, outreach to the poor and migrants, and meeting people where they are. He said last year “the bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom.” He supported Pope Francis’ change in pastoral practice to allow divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive Holy Communion. Prevost appears somewhat less favorable to currying favor with the LGBTQ lobby than Francis, but he showed mild support for Fiducia Supplicans. More cut and paste from College of Cardinals Report:
Ahead of the 2025 Conclave, Cardinal Prevost was being promoted as a possible compromise candidate if leading candidates were unable to obtain enough votes. His lengthy missionary service in Peru allowed him to be seen as a more universal candidate than American which mitigated problems associated with choosing a pope from a superpower in his case. However, there was speculation that he might be considered too young and too recently made a cardinal to be seriously considered papabile with any significant chance of being elected. Continued questions over his handling of sexual abuse have also cast a cloud over his prospects. How soon before Trump takes credit for an American being elected Pope Leo 14? "I started it", he will say.
He'd better be careful. "Prevost also holds a Peruvian passport and has been a Peruvian citizen since 2015."' That type of thing could get him thrown into a prison in El Salvador should he try to enter the US. The new pope has more in common with Third World Americans, than he does with insular-minded Americans. I see him as someone who could directly confront Trump. He is a progressive leaning centrist in the mold of Francis. They may have picked him to have a megaphone in the USA about current events. I don't see a good relationship happening between the two at all. Let Pope Leo XIV not be silent about multiple degradations of humanity by Trump in his own country. The previous Pope Leo, the 13th, composed the St. Michael prayer.
copypasta; "This prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII after he experienced a horrifying vision. On October 13, 1884, while consulting with his cardinals after Mass, Pope Leo XIII paused at the foot of the altar and lapsed into what looked like a coma. After a little while the Pope recovered himself and related the terrifying vision he had of the battle between the Church and Satan. Afterwards, Pope Leo went to his office and composed this now famous prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and assigned it to be recited after Low Mass, a position it occupied until Vatican II. It was recently recommended by Pope John Paul II in a speech to a crowd of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square on Sunday April 24, 1994 as a prayer for the Church. The Pope is just another man and to put our trust in a man is setting yourself up for failure.
Put your trust in the Word as it will never fail. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. Posted by: Soothsayer and five yamulkas walk into a bar at May 08, 2025 02:25 PM (ZUOEn) The move showed a lot of practicality. Jesus probably was born in the spring, since the shepherds were out with the sheep which implies lambing time. But in Rome when they moved out into the Empire everyone was having a merry festival where families gave gifts to each other and friends and did other fun stuff. Remove some temptation to backslide by having your own with much the same rituals you can share with non Christians. Posted by: Oldcat at May 08, 2025 02:41 PM (8avO+) 666
Thumbs down from Ann Barnhardt. "Abject disaster".

He looks really creepy, which I guess is appropriate.

Hoping he's a Cubs fan because a White Sox fan would be a sure sign of the Anti-Christ and END TIMES!

The Cardinals elect a Cubs fan to lead the Padres.

When a church, any church of any size, believes it is contained withing the walls of a building or the elaborate or simple vestments of officers, that ceases being a church and becomes a tribe.
The same profession of faith that calls me to believe in our Lord and Savior is repelled by the ears and by the hearts of those who manufacture scripture and theology rather than trust in it. I have no faith that the Catholic Church contains a greater quantity of Christians than any other congregation; the highest member of that church is elevated to a post nearer to God but hoisted to it by simple humans. The highest member of the tidy and humble building where I worship maintains a garden and livestock to feed his family. None of our human brethren is of a higher status than the lowest of our number; we are all sinners in the sight of God and are saved not by worship or works but by faith and faith alone. According to Ann Barnhardt, he's a hardcore liberal, and "things are going to get worse" for the Catholic Church.

It is as I foretold.
The little commie trained Liberation Theology agent from Argentina has been replaced by his carefully chosen successor, a Chicago operative who has gone from Cardinal to Pope in 2 years. If you thought that the Catholic Church was going off the rails into ruin under Francis, just wait until Leo gets his act going. You might witness the severance of the African and US diocese from the mother church as the communist dogma overcomes the Holy See at Rome. The new commie Pope will kill the Church and wear its old vestments like a skin suit, because that is what commies do to every good and decent Western institution. If Prevost was chose over Dolan, is that God's way of telling us that Chicago pizza is better than New York pizza?
