Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - May 13, 2025 [scampydog]Friendly mystery click We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty-some most unsure, some nearly sure, but none absolutely certain. Richard P. Feynman Being built to survive passage through Venus' atmosphere means that if the 1,091-pound (495 kilograms), 3-foot (1 meter) lander is recovered it will likely be mostly intact. Under a United Nations treaty, any surviving debris from the spaceship will belong to Russia.publius Speaking of Kosmos 482, you may remember some Six Million Dollar Man episodes where Steve had to fight a rogue Russian Venus probe that accidentally crashed in the US and thought it was on Venus. Don Pettit returned to earth on April 20th. "A week ago, I was on station, and I was doing really heavy squats, I was doing dead lifts, I could float around with the greatest of ease, even though I had no trapeze," he said. "I was at the peak of my game. And then you come back to Earth, and it's like, God, I can't even get up from the floor anymore. It's humbling. But it isn't about the large muscle groups. It's about the little, tiny muscles that everybody forgets about because they're just there and they work. When you're in weightlessness, these muscles don't work anymore. And they take a six-month vacation until you come back to Earth. And now, all of a sudden, they start groaning and talking to you, and it takes a while to get all these little muscles tuned back up to being an Earthling."publius He returned on his 70th birthday, Russian time zone. Watching the Soyuz recovery, I noticed they didn't show Don at all. Turns out the reason was he was puking his guts out, poor guy. He's said he's one of the worst about returning to 1g; it messes him up big time, and it takes him several days to feel human again as he puts it. This was probably Don's last mission -- he hasn't mentioned retiring from NASA yet, and I imagine he'll continue to work for a good while, but on Earth, not in space. Here's an article with a picture of Don being carried off from the Soyuz. You can see he looks a little rough. publius shared this fun Don and Suni dancing video. publius There's a famous "dancing on the ceiling" scene with Fred Astaire. It was filmed in a rotating set. A room was constructed inside a large drum, which rotated with the camera fixed to the drum. Prior to this new finding, all the black holes that have been identified have also had a companion star-they are discovered due to their impact on light emitted by their companion star. Without such a companion star, it would be very difficult to see a black hole. The one identified by the team was only noticed because it passed in front of a distant non-companion star, magnifying its light and shifting its position in the sky for a short while.publius Now, the lone, or rogue black hole problem. It's a scary thought. If a black hole is quiet, it's not feeding on anything to give off light, one could be lurking out there and we wouldn't see it. So, you imagine what if a stellar mass one is on a collision course with the solar system. If it get too close, it would wreak havoc, planets, including earth, having their orbits perturbed or even ejected. Fortunately, the odds of this are very low, given what they think the black hole population is in the galaxy. Turns out the odds of this are 0.04% over the remaining 5 billion year lifetime of the Sun. Far higher, although still low in the absolute sense, is a passing star getting close enough to perturb the Oort Cloud a bit, and send a bunch of comets raining in the inner solar system years later. Resonance, the amplification of waves at specific frequencies, underpins many everyday technologies, including smartphones, ultrasound imaging, and radio systems. However, conventional resonators gradually dissipate energy, requiring continuous input to sustain their operation. Nearly 100 years ago, Nobel Prize winners John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner introduced a radical idea: under specific conditions, it might be possible for waves to remain confined indefinitely, without leaking energy. These so-called bound states in the continuum (BIC) are akin to whirlpools that stay fixed in place, even as a river flows around them. Yet for decades, scientists assumed such states could not exist within a compact, single-resonator system-until now. The Exlabs-Antares partnership "pairs two companies with an ambitious vision and pragmatic roadmaps to bring space nuclear technologies to bear," Will Madsen, Antares head of mission engineering, said in a statement. "For too long, space nuclear power has solely existed in conceptual studies - now it's time to build."publius Now, nuclear propulsion. The ultimate is something dubbed the Epstein Drive, after a fictional character on the sci-fi show The Expanse. Here's the scene showing how the inventor, Solomon Epstein, accidentally hit the mother load on fusion rocket efficiency. His test fusion hot-rod spaceship had a wonky voice interface, so he shut off the voice control. When he fired it up, the thrust was so great he was pulling too many g's to move, and so killed his fool self, strapped in under high g unable to turn off the engine: What's interesting about this is it's possible with known physics. It ain't Star Trek warp drive using unknown physics. While the physics works, it's just the engineering of something like this is well beyond current capability. Power output would be in the TW range, 10s of TW. The exhaust blast would energetic indeed, and you'd be vaporized in you got behind the ass end of the thing. It would be impossible to fire it on the ground or in the atmosphere, as it would be like setting off a string of tactical nukes continuously. But it would work in space fine, minimum safe distance around 50 miles or so. This would open up the entire solar system to traffic, reducing voyage times to earth-like trips. You would use constant acceleration trajectories, rather than free fall delta-v based orbital trajectories. You'd accelerate at 1g toward your target till you got about half-way, then turn around and decelerate at 1g. Travel times would be about 2.5 hours to the Moon, 1.5 days to Mars, Jupiter in 4 days, Saturn in 6, and Pluto in 13 days. And this also solves the weightless problem. You'd be accelerating at 1g the whole time, save for brief periods of stopping and starting. Something like this is conceivable with fusion reactions. Most fusion produces neutrons, which are hard to deal with, as there's no neutron mirror, something you can push against -- they just rip through everything and you can't direct the energy. However, there are a few that produce mostly charged particles for the products and you can imagine EM field "thrust plates", using superconducting magnets and ridiculously strong electric fields. In rocket lingo, the efficiency of a rocket is dubbed specific impulse, which is just the ratio of thrust to mass flow rate, which is exhaust velocity, although, common practice is to express the mass flow in g-based weight, so the units are time, seconds. The most efficient chemical rockets we have are about 450 s. The Epstein drive would have exhaust velocities around 10% c, and specific impulse around 100K to 1 million. IOW, orders of magnitude more efficient. Note how this is achieved, throwing a little bit of mass out the tailpipe at high speed vs a lot of mass at slow speed. If Elon figures that out, the solar system is now our backyard. Big ONT thanks to publius for the knowledge and contributions. Any of the Horde mastered curing/making homemade bacon? There is some science behind the wet and dry methods of curing. But salt also penetrates the meat. Salt (NaCl) is a very tiny molecule with only two atoms, sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl). It easily splits into sodium and chlorine ions when it gets wet and they get electrified and easily penetrate the pores and membranes. Nitrite is also a small molecule, NO2, with three atoms, one nitrogen (N) and two oxygens (O). Nitrite breaks down into nitric oxide (NO) and binds to the iron atom (Fe) in myoglobin in the meat. Myoglobin is the protein that gives meat its red color. The chemical process is similar to the process that causes the pink smoke ring in smoked meats and it gives cured meat its characteristic pink color.Scanned The Deplorable Gourmet cookbook for a homemade bacon recipe but the driNks section tripped me. Had an excellent hike this morning in the Orchard Hills above Irvine. Temps in the low 60's, partly cloudy. Six miles and 750' elevation gain in just over two hours. I didn't want to get up this morning but once I was on the trail it was highly rewarding. Saw two bunnies and a squirrel. Someone else said they saw a big skunk. Thank you for all the prayers and well wishes. Younger daughter kept me sort of informed.
Saturday late morning I was sleeping with Bailey and he got attacked by another gatto so he panicked and leapt away using (some) claws. One of them must have sliced a vein or something but I didn't realize it until I had a pool of blood on the carpet from the 'drip'. Had a whiteout. Went to hospital via ambulance. Cat scan showed nothing related to kidney cyst or pneumonia as per previous. Decided to ship me to a more advanced hospital in St, Louis. At about 1:30AM I got my first helicopter ride. I was so packed and hemmed in while strapped to a very narrow stretcher that I surprised myself not getting claustrophobic. Maybe more on that later. I had lost 5 units (5 x 350ml? ). Lots of intravenous antibiotics, 3 units blood and more other liquids that I can remember. No scotch though. Apparently I had sepsis and septic shock. Best food of any hospital I have used. I was in an ICU section and the nurses were fab. I was pampered. Posted by: Ciampino - yep I'm here at May 13, 2025 10:27 PM (sPQoU) 84

75 Trump looked great in Saudi Arabia at the conference earlier today. He slammed the neocons, liberal NGO's, and Western nation builders, and complimented the people who lived there for building their own nations, based on their modern outlooks and discarding the old ways.

And I'm sure they know that we know and won't forget how they covered for Biden. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at May 13, 2025 10:08 PM (DL7HR) I don't know, but I used the Hell out of my staple gun today. I had a whole mess of radiator hoses, used and new, crammed into cartons, and wasting shelf space in the little shop, which is heated. So I sat me down in a chair, and measured the I.D. of each hose at each end, applied a ring of masking tape, and wrote down those diameters with a Sharpie. Then I used a stitching awl to put a loop of thread through the rubber very near one end of each, and tied the ends in a knot. Then I took bundles of prepared hoses to the big shop, and stapled them to the wall by the thread loops. I went through an entire bobbin of waxed nylon thread. Now, if I need a rad hose, I can just look at the wall, and pluck off a likely-looking candidate. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 13, 2025 10:34 PM (4FpNc) 109

Lasers, masers, etc. all have to “fed,” have energy pumped in to their resonant cavities until extract the collimated, in-step, light, IR, whatever as a pulse or CW. They are talking, I presume (haven’t read the article) about putting energy in a resonant cavity and just leaving it there, indefinitely. Pretty nifty, I’ll be sure to read it later to see how they pull it off. Something similar was done years ago: put a current in a superconducting ring and keep it below it’s critical temperature (below which it is a superconductor) and the current keeps circulating indefinitely. That depends on superconduction. Without reading it, I suspect the resonant cavity depends on some “perfect” quantum resonance so maybe BEC or the like? Just guessing. How much above 1g a healthy human could tolerate is really unknown. 1.5g is likely the limit, but it would take time to acclimate. If you suddenly went to 1.5g, it wouldn't be too tolerable. What you'd want to do is increase it slowly, over a couple of weeks, I think. Considering at 1g constant, the whole Solar System is about 2 weeks max, you wouldn't gain much. Now for cargo, not humans or animals, you could increase it well above 1g depending on the cargo. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 13, 2025 11:08 PM (w6EFb) 201

I tried making bacon by salting down pork belly in a ziplock bag with sugar cure, it turned out very salty, and I never figured out I had to cut it thin, and simmer the slices before frying. Unsmoked it is not great bacon.
I do make pickled beef with cheap roasts cut about an inch thick. I seal them with about a tablespoon of sugar cure and put them in the freezer. About a week before I want one, I pull it out to the fridge and let it work itself in the plastic bag, then I cook it like a corned beef in a crock pot. Those I have to slice it thin and simmer for a few minutes to get the salt off too, but they are worth the hassle. They are a wonderful slice of beef for a sandwich. Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. Continued desperate attempts by the West to get an immediate 30 day ceasefire. There will be a Russian delegation in Istanbul on 15 May, looking for someone to talk to. Unknown if anybody will dare to actually speak to them and risk being called a Putin Stooge back home. 2. In a peculiar incident, the Ukrainians blew up some buildings well behind their current front lines to prevent the Russians from occupying them later. While it was perhaps a sensible thing to do, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their future prospects. 3. The Russians continue to grind, and in some places surge, forward all along the front line. The attempted Ukrainian raid across the border in the northwest has been pretty much stamped out. No fresh news about the Russians crossing the river at Kherson in the south. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 13, 2025 11:22 PM (y9QyG) 238

I meant minimum territorial goals. Ukraine's future military status outweighs every other consideration, that's why there's a war on at all.
When Tucker did his Moscow trip and interview with Lavrov, there were a few hilarious moments. When Tucker asked whether it was correct that the US and Russian guvamints had not spoken for eons, Lavrov's expression was the seasoned poker-faced Russki diplomat's equivalent of "what the F is wrong with you??". Of course there was regular contact (um, Tucker, that's what embassies spend most of their time doing). Carlson had pimped the episode as examining the alarming situation where RUSSIA AND THE US HAVEN'T SPOKEN IN YEARS AND NUKYLER WAR IS A REAL POSSIBILITY ELEVENTY!!!!! When Tucker asked what Moscow would accept as part of a settlement, Lavrov said no Ukraine in NATO, almost before the question was finished. A small hint as to the central nature of this question - a hint even most Euro and Beltway experts seem to take. Posted by: rhomboid at May 13, 2025 11:37 PM (1m82a) 266

For the continuously flowing current, all you need to do is keep the ring below its critical temperature, i.e. superconducting. For some of the newer ceramic superconducting materials (how to make wires with a ceramic is an art, but one the engineers have mastered) the critical temperature is above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. That means your superconducting maglev suspension and drive coils on your floating electric train just need to be in a sturdy Dewar flask, and the train engineer comes along at the end of the run to top off the Dewars with liquid nitrogen, which we can extract from the air and costs on a per gallon basis about the price of milk. Superconduction applications are doable and coming. It’s rather like how the engineers would top of the bearings with oil periodically on old steam engines. It’s just engineering, now! Power transmission, in the future, with superconducting power lines (probably buried in the ground, not in the air) can be all DC with no loss, none, in the power line (there is always some loss in AC transmission, even at very high voltages). We've got the "we have to help everyone even if they aren't like us" crew that want to bring every third worlder here balking at these refugees because the color of their skin (great replacement is just a conspiracy theory people!) Then we've got the FNM arguing that whites aren't being targeted in SA these refugees are really just leaving uh...because uh...no reason or anything. Then you've also got the NGO set arguing that Trump holding back aid against SA because they are discriminating against whites is wrong. Even though 40 years ago they argued it was a moral imperative to issue a trade embargo on SA because...it discriminated against people based on race. In case you missed it, the below EO is a big deal. Trump is forcing the federal government to spell out everything that is a crime under federal law.
The other thing the EO does is to force the government to add a "mens rea" element to most of these "crimes"; i.e., you have to be aware of the fact that you are committing a crime in order for it to be a crime. Thus, if you decide to build a pond on your property and the EPA has some obscure regulation saying that is a crime, you would need to be aware of the criminal nature of the act before you did it in order to be guilty of anything.... ... This is really important and is a theme I keep coming back to. Regulatory schemes like Dodd-Frank and the CFPB are created ostensibly to help the “little guy,” when in reality they create byzantine layers upon layers of compliance requirements that only mega-corporations can afford to navigate. Those sorts of laws are anti-competitive and hurt most of all the “little guy” they purport to help.
When you hear the likes of Bernie Sanders and Big Chief Lizzie Warren railing against the “oligarchy,” realize that they regulatory schemes they propose serve the oligarchy MOST OF ALL. In fact, Bernie and Lizzie and AOC are the oligarchs, not us. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at May 14, 2025 01:35 AM (xYplz) 352
If you're interested in the engineering of a possible Epstein Drive, have Grok go over the details. What you need is a fusion reaction that produces most charged particles as products. There are a few candidates, although there's some trickiness required there.
Once you have that, most of the high energy output particles are charged, you can then make an EM nozzle to direct the flow. Think superconducting magnets and high electric field components as well. This gives you a directed exhaust. What you want is high thrust, but with low mass flow. The problem is this still can't get you out of the earth's gravity well, because, well, you vaporize the pad and yourself in the equivalent of a tactical nuke going off. But once in space, you're good. You just don't want to get too close looking up the ass end of the thing. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 14, 2025 01:36 AM (w6EFb) 353

As Niven and Pournelle found out from their fans, ringworlds are unstable, just like Dyson spheres. They had to address the issue in later books in the series to explain how the ringworld engineers stabilized the ring. A ringworld is basically a quasi-two dimensional equivalent of a Dyson sphere so no wonder they are unstable to perturbation, just like Dyson spheres. Also, I think everyone is just joking, but Dyson père is not Dyson fils (pronounced: fis).

Two reactions would be ideal for an Epstein Drive, He-3 - D, and H-Boron. Helium-3 and deuterium, and hydrogen and boron. The problem with the boron reaction is the ignition temperature is insane, about 1B K, rather than a mere 100M K for the He-3. But boron would be ideal, no neutrons at all, all charged products. He-3 would produce some neutrons due to side reactions. The other problem is some serious shielding would be needed for dust and micrometeoroids during the journey, because the peak speeds in the middle of the journey get very high, approaching relativistic regime a little bit. Tiny little dust particles would be like bombs going off if they hit the vehicle. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 14, 2025 02:01 AM (w6EFb) 377

Kindltot -
There is good observational evidence for dark matter, the galaxies can’t turn the way they do without it. Whether it’s a WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle - like a neutralino) or a MACHO (massive compact halo object) or something else entirely, it’s definitely there. MACHOs seem to have been ruled out by astronomers and particle physicists don’t like WIMPs, so nobody knows what it is, but there’s strong observational evidence that it is there! Dark energy is what I don’t buy. There is no direct evidence of it you can point to in a lab. The theoretical calculations are based on simplistic metric models of the universe that are probably alright in the early universe, but fail, in my estimation, in the later universe as it becomes filamentary and structured. Also, the evidence for it requires us to live in a very special time when the observational evidence is just beginning to show up (i.e. the universe is not galloping apart, but just beginning a runaway expansion). This is a kind of time-oriented Ptolemaicism: that we live in a special time, rather than a special place (the center of the universe). I think it doesn’t exist. A lot of the dust out there in the solar system is charged due to the solar wind. A magnetic shield would work there, and you've already got YUGE electromagnets for your Epstein drive nozzle. For the larger stuff, think advanced Whipple Shield. For the even bigger stuff, you'd need some sort of laser zapper. Grok says time from detection to impact would be about 0.1s using LIDAR to scan ahead, so you'd have to have some active targeting system running all the time. It's roughly this. You calculate the expected population of stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way at the current lifetime, based on the stellar and galactic evolution. This gives you a black hole number density, number of black holes per cubic light year or cubic parsec. Now, you know the volume of the solar system and it's speed. How much volume does it sweep out per time, and that's how many block holes you expect to be in that swept volume. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 14, 2025 02:37 AM (w6EFb) 406

Yes, the trajectory is basically accelerate at constant rate toward the target, then, halfway there, turn around and decelerate at the same rate, arriving at the target at zero relative velocity. The speeds involved with even just 1g make the solar system a simple point and shoot, because the travel times are so short, the orbital curvature doesn't matter much. Any planet is basically moving in a straight line relative to the short travel time. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 14, 2025 02:40 AM (w6EFb) 412

I also believe the universe is unbounded but finite, for a rather silly reason (or is it?). The simplest model is that the four dimensional universe (three of space, one of time) is the surface of a hyper sphere embedded in what would be minimally a six dimensional space. You can only travel within the surface of the hyper sphere, i.e. within the three spatial dimensions and the one time dimension. So if you point your Epstein drive at Polaris, say, regulated to just one “g” (you want to be comfortable: you’re going to be traveling for a very long time). And you just miss Polaris, but keep on going in the same direction, yo will soon be traveling close to the speed of light such that time dilation will cause you to almost stop aging (to an outside observer - for you time passes regularly, but ignoring relative time dilations makes it look like you’re traveling faster than light - I mean you passed up that last star in a few days and it was light years distant, and now your speeding up - constant acceleration, remember?). Really you’re traveling at 0.9999999… times the speed of light. So time for you, to an outside observer, has practically stopped. (Continued in Part 2)

(Part 2)
So, if you keep going you eventually return to where you started but from the anti-Polaris direction, like a great circle route on the surface of the Earth. Of course, you’ve really been traveling at just under the speed of light, so when you get back it will be tens of billions of years later. That’s what I mean by finite but unbounded. So why don’t I believe in an unbounded, infinite universe. In an infinite universe, as you travel outward, there are just more and more galaxies, more stars, more and more planets, and since it’s an infinite universe, you’ll eventually find a planet just like Earth, only with some subtle difference. There would have to be an infinite number of pseudo-Earths all with subtle differences. Now on one of those planets, I am Batman, and I refuse to believe I can be Batman! That’s it! That’s my reason for believing in a finite unbounded universe. By the way, if the universe is infinite, there’s an Earth where you are Batman, too! What do you think?! >> The simplest model is that the four dimensional universe (three of space, one of time) is the surface of a hyper sphere embedded in what would be minimally a six dimensional space.
See deSitter spacetime. That's the maximally symmetric, constant positive spacetime curvature solution. It's the equivalent of a sphere in Euclidian, positive definite metric land. It's really more hyperbolic lookin, and the constant negative curvature solution, Anti deSitter, is hyperbolic looking as well, but it's the equivalent of a sphere, constant positive curvature. This is just empty spacetime with a positive Cosmological constant, and this gives a perfect, simple toy spacetime for an expanding universe. Posted by: Dark Litigator at May 14, 2025 03:25 AM (KAi1n) 444
The embedding space for deSitter is beautiful as well, a simple (1, 4) Minkowski flat spacetime. Consider a 4D hypersphere of some radius. Now that that radius expand, but an accelerating expansion, hyperbolic, constant proper acceleration, Rindler fashion. The induced metric on the surface of that expanding hypersphere is just deSitter. Now, problem is, that's the maximally symmetric version. You can easily get that adding real matter, non-empty space of the standard FLRW solutions. Curvature, while constant, varies with comoving time, and the embedding space is not so simple, quite messy to construct. But the deSitter blowing up hyperballoon analogy is a nice mental picture. I’m sorry, Publius, I think I snapped a little. I think the maximally symmetric metric is the simplest, but it’s dead; it’s not the universe we live in. Everyone does it because it’s the simplest, but over simplifying leads to errors, as I’ve mentioned earlier this evening. And yes, the Batman explanation is a joke, but I think astrophysicists put to much trust in their over-simplified models. I had an Indian friend, a cosmologist, who has since gone back to India, with whom I’d share my concerns, and he’d agree with me, and amplify the reasons why their assumptions were too facile. I miss him, but he missed India more.

I just sight read the notes as they are written and sing my part (I’m a bass), so a little practice might make it easier.
