Trump: I'll Stop Bombing the Houthis Because They Called Me Up and Totally "Capitulated"

I continue to not understand the hardcore Ron Paul anti-interventionists. These terrorists have been lobbing missiles at Western ships, including US ships, for years, and yet the bleat from the Tucker Carlson Chorus is that we just need to let them blow up our ships. To do otherwise is to, as always, "risk World War III."

Remember when the neocons used to tell us that we had to bomb this country or that one or else we risk World War III? Well, the born-again paleocons now claim that we must not do anything to any terrorist country, or else we risk World War III.

I think there's an explanation for this: This isn't about being anti-interventionism, this is about being anti-Israel and... maybe more than that. Because they only seem to start squawking when we bomb someone who is bombing Israel.

The Houthis recently shot missiles at Israel's main airport, and Israel has responded by bombing Yemen's main sea port and then the main air port.

Israel counter-attacked a country that will not stop launching missiles at them, and I'm very sure this is somehow Israel's fault.

And I'm sure Tucker Carlson has a problem with that, even though it didn't involve the US. I'm sure he's just worried that the Jews he feels such pungent antipathy for are "risking World War III."

Can you get me a beer while you're up? If you don't you're Risking World War Three.

Weird he never thinks that Iran or its many, many terrorist proxy armies are Risking World War Three. Only Israel, and the US, if the US sides with Israel against terrorists.

The Jerusalem Post:

The Israeli military carried out an airstrike on Yemen's main airport in Sanaa on Tuesday, its second attack in two days on Iran-aligned Houthi rebels after a surge in tensions between the group and Israel.

Three people were killed in the strike, according to Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV.

Israel warned people to leave the area around Sanaa International Airport before Tuesday's attack, which it said targeted Houthi infrastructure and "fully disabled the airport". Witnesses later reported four strikes in the capital.

Tensions have been high since the Gaza war began, but have risen further since a Houthi missile landed near Israel's Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday, prompting Israeli airstrikes on Yemen's Hodeidah port on Monday.

"A short while ago, IDF (Israel Defence Forces) fighter jets struck and dismantled Houthi terrorist infrastructure at the main airport in Sanaa, fully disabling the airport," the Israeli military said.

"The strike was carried out in response to the attack launched by the Houthi terrorist regime against Ben Gurion Airport. Flight runways, aircraft, and infrastructure at the airport were struck."

Three airport sources told Reuters that the strikes targeted three civilian airplanes, the departures hall, the airport runway and a military air base under Houthi control.

The Israeli military said the airport had been "a central hub for the Houthi terrorist regime to transfer weapons and operatives."

In a statement carried by al-Masirah, the Houthis said:

"The operations of our armed forces will continue and the support by Yemen to Palestine will only end with the end of the aggression and siege against Gaza."

They can say that, but Yemen's foreign minister has announced that he wants a ceasefire:

Badr Albusaidi
@badralbusaidi

Following recent discussions and contacts conducted by the Sultanate of Oman with the United States and the relevant authorities in Sana'a, in the Republic of Yemen, with the aim of de-escalation, efforts have resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two sides. In the future, neither side will target the other, including American vessels, in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping. The Sultanate of Oman expresses its gratitude to both parties for their constructive approach that led to this welcome outcome, and hopes that it will lead to further progress on many regional issues towards achieving justice, peace, and prosperity for all.

Presumably the government of Yemen will shut down or at least curb the terrorists it's currently tolerating. If not, presumably we'll start bombing them again.

Karoline Leavitt
@PressSec

Massive WIN.

President Trump promised to restore the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, and he used great American strength to swiftly deliver on that promise.

The world is safer with President Trump in charge.

Arthur Kimes
@ComradeArthur

"President Trump ordered the US to start bombing the Houthis on March 15, 2025, when the United States launched a series of airstrikes across Yemen targeting the Houthis."

*That* didn't take long. Biden barely made an effort.

cc: @AceofSpadesHQ

So I don't get it: How would not counter-attacking these terrorists have benefited the US? It would have created more acts of war -- more missiles lobbed at cities and airports, and more Western ships being attacked by Houthis -- not fewer.

But whatever. We're all terrorists now, I guess. And we're all Code Pink. The Horseshoe Theory is proven. The fringe right has become the far left of the 90s and 2000s.

But

When one starts we should *ruthlessly* seek to win at as quickly and with as little cost in American lives and treasure as possible.

Generally that will be bombing the military AND civilian infrastructure of the aggressor. And...destroying the ports of a country engaged in piracy is frankly so obvious a solution to this it would take a modern DoD official to not understand why that would work...

65 Iran supplies the Houthi's with weapons. We know this. There only so many ways to get weapons from Iran to Yemen. Air or sea. When Iran ships a boatload of suicide drones, or ballistic missiles or cruise missiles those weapons are vulnerable while in transit.

However we bomb the Houthi's after they launch these weapons. Yemen is about the size of the UK and the missiles and drones can be setup and fired in a couple hours, tops. That seems like a difficult targeting problem, even with 100 attack jets and a half dozen B-2 bombers. Our RECON drones are dropping like flies over there too. Around 20, or more "Reaper" like UAV's lost since January.

Being the armchair general that I am, I'd look at interdicting the weapons before they get to Yemen. Whether that entails bombing certain targets in Iran, ships at sea or whatever... I'm sure we have some sort of clue how the weapons are getting from Iran to Yemen.

It's probably not via FedEx either.

It's easier to complain about us.

Another problem with the fight against the Houthis is that it exposes deep problems within the Navy, particularly the inability to rearm ships at sea.

If they'd get fixed through this exposure, it'd be fine, but would you bet on it?

Also, swatting at flies, eventually a carrier gets hit.

Also, this idea that Iran has no air defense is imbecilic. It's meant to induce people into the idea that zapping Iran is easy - like Iraq!

Actually, the position is "have a strong national interest before getting involved" and "have a win plan and out strategy" - keeping the sea lane safe, when we do tons of sea shipping all around the world (in both imports and exports) seems like a strong national interest...especially b/c we also knew it wouldn't take much to secure the shipping lane. And for win and out strategy = we didn't need to kick a country out of another country...we just needed to stop "some savages from throwing rocks at us", which a couple of bombs every day accomplished...

Posted by: Harry Paratestes

Historically, the US Navy (and the Royal Navy back in the day) championed freedom of the seas from pirates etc. Striking the Houthis who were acting as proxies in attacking shipping in the Red Sea was all about denial of the free travel of ships. This hurt Egypt in the pocketbook for not siding with the Iranians, and destabilized Euroland, and attacking Israel.

If you note, Yemenese government effectively disintegrated when Iran bought off the Houthis decade ago to attack Saudi Arabia from the South.

Apparently the missile used to hit Ben Gurion was a hi-tech hypersonic glide missile which is why THAAD and Israeli missile defenses did not intercept successfully. Given those missiles either come from Russia or China and were passed through by the Iranians constitutes a major escalation by Iran in launching those missiles from Houthi land.

Posted by: whig at May 06, 2025 03:50 PM (ctrM5)

87 Also, this idea that Iran has no air defense is imbecilic. It's meant to induce people into the idea that zapping Iran is easy - like Iraq!

Yes, they first came to prominence when our other great ally in the middle east, Saudi Arabia, bombed the ever loving shit out of Yemen to kill the Houthis (with American planes and bombs, of course), who were allegedly being sponsored by Iran to overthrow the Sunni government of Yemen.

Here's my problem with all of us: I don't trust our government, I don't trust our media, I certainly don't trust our intel agencies, and our options here are to:
1) just "trust the experts" and let them do whatever they want overseas
or
2) become experts in every third world conflict around the world and pick sides in that conflict for some reason.
OR
3) say "fuck that, they can fight it out, it's not our problem"

Or am I missing something?

There is a reason that John Adams created a Navy and that Tom Jefferson subsequently used it against the Barbary pirates.

Piracy, shipping attacks, etc. are a common thing around Muslim chokeholds of shipping lanes throughout history.

Piracy happened elsewhere like the Caribbean during the colonial era but centuries of Mediterranean piracy resulted in Europe losing a lot of victims taken in pirate raids for slaves to Muslims who valued them over other slaves they could get.

Posted by: runner at May 06, 2025 03:54 PM (g47mK)

Not really a shock, Houthis are "at war" with Israel and its 'allies' to support Hamas in Gaza. Iran was sponsoring that in a similar manner to us sponsoring Ukraine and its war.

If they have been defeated now, great perhaps Yemen can get its house in order. Let the Europeans do the nationbuilding, that trade route is not one the US uses much.

Posted by: Oldcat at May 06, 2025 04:03 PM (8avO+)

168 As for what I would do? I don't know what we're importing from Red Sea ports that is so important, but if we need to drop bombs in Yemen, my first course of action would be to walk over to Congress and say we need to declare war on Yemen and I would try to make my case.

And I doubt I would be able to, so ultimately, nothing would be done about the Houthi problem. If someone is more motivated to solve it, they can.

Why is this my problem, as president of the US in this hypothetical?
Posted by: Harry Paratestes

Harry, I learned long ago about that question about declared wars. Basically between WWI and WWII plus the early cold war, Congress put all kinds of triggers in case of declared wars that give the president God Emperor status over the economy, immigration, diplomacy, the military and so on.

There are so many of provisions buried in current laws that senior members take junior members of Congress aside and tell them the facts of life. If war is declared, you get FDR WWII elected dictator level power for the president.

217 >>Which US-flag ships have been damaged, sunk or captured by Houthis in Yemen?

Kind of irrelevant. They've been firing missiles at our ships for years. The only reasons they haven't hit our poor aim and inferior weapons. To date.

But they have hit other ships.

I think you probably understand that as much as some might like we don't live in an unconnected world. If the canal is closed to commerce it will mean ships will have to take the longer and more dangerous voyage around Africa. This will raise the costs of goods and damage the US economy all with the rest of the world.

More importantly, it would mean surrendering the canal as a means of travel for our Navy. Which would be idiotic and dangerous.

We did not start anything with the Houthis. We did not ask for war. They are an Iranian proxy that is paid to attack us. Ignoring them forever and retreating to our shores was never an option. They missile firing had to stop. I don't want any more wars and apparently we aren't going to have one. But the missiles are stopping.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at May 06, 2025 04:07 PM (uCjyK)

Russia actually has levels of engagement built in to its system, which is why they called it an SMO. Putin isn't free without support from their Duma to perform actions and send recruits in their draft callup to war. The invasion was called a SMO so he could operate in Ukraine freely, with limited forces on one front to be able to react, but he had to go to the Duma to build the forces larger and use more regular troops over the ensuing years.

This would probably be a practice to follow for us if we get into these limited wars .. define levels of action between peace and WWIII and set requirements to ask for limited action forces from Congress.

235 I've certainly heard that argument, but the answers are to change the laws or be REALLY REALLY REALLY sure you want a war before you declare one.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes

Louis Fisher was a man who was a long time Congressional Research Service guy that called for what you just proposed. He wanted formal declarations of war and called it fairly regardless of the current partisan control of the WH for decades.

Excellent legal scholar of the war clause btw and congressional power in general in such cases.

Basically, the old arrangement was that the president could use the navy and marines to react to any situation worldwide with dispatch (same rationale would apply to the Air Force and Space Force) without declaring war. So the President could and did involve US Navy/Marines much more often than people think (was well over 100--nearly as high as 150 or so) times over the years from almost the beginning of the US.

The army, and general conscription powers, rested with Congress and did formally require a declaration of war.

Re changing the laws, they are often not explicit in what triggers 'emergency' clauses and are a nightmare to research. AI might be able to do it

Rome did a decent job over their life in assimilation.

We do not. We don't have anyone looking into the ways to turn a hostile power into a future ally and the means to do it. We just know sitting around with the army's thumb in its butt fails. We know building fortifications under Gazan hospitals fails.

Until or unless we have a branch of government that develops these plans and the skills to implement them I am against all such nation building exercises. We literally do not know how to do it.

I never liked Tucker Carlson, I've always thought he was a grifter, so I can't act like I know exactly what Tucker's up to these days. Occasionally I see clips of him interviewing people on YouTube, I haven't seen anything objectionable, and Tucker 3.0 does seem to be more on my side (anti-interventionalist) than Tucker 2.0, the neocon, so I guess that's a positive development.

But maybe I read too much in to ace's prose here -- I just get annoyed at the "if you don't agree with [x], it's because you're secretly a racist / sexist / homophobe / transphobe / antisemite / whatever" trope.

They're the two dumbass sides of the same stupid coin. How about we, get this, use military force both moderately and judiciously and after careful consideration of the facts, leaning a little more toward what's best for the US and her citizens, and not what's best for either Achmed or Schlemiel thousands of miles away? 334 I feel like everyone is dancing around the real issue, which is the core beliefs of the former Ron Paul gang.

As far as they are concerned, America is always and everywhere the evil aggressor. Many of them believe the Cold War happened because the US was "threatening" Russia and that Russia was conquering and occupying its neighbors because of fear of "American aggression." The US kept the Cold War going so defense companies could make money, and we could have had a wonderful and peaceful world if we stopped threatening and terrorizing the poor Russians.

This worldview applies to every conflict they look at. As far as they are concerned, the Houthis are reacting to "Israeli aggression" and Israel is making trouble because the US is inciting them do it. As far as the Tucker Carlson/Ron Paul gang are concerned, if the US would stop supporting Israeli aggression, the Houthis would stop bombing our ships and Iran would become our best fwend.

Essentially, aggression against the US is always justified because the US is "interfering too much" in other countries, and we should disband the entire military and stop interfering in other countries. Then we would have world peace.

Everyone always screamed that we couldn't do anything to Russia, but then Trump dropped a MoaB on their troops and Russia's response was to do jack shit. Same when they said we can't hit Iran, it'll start WW3, and he vaporized their top general.

Most countries don't want a fight with the US, because they no that it's a no win for their leader, that any outcome will end up with the leader/leaders dead. And as much as these guys hates there US, they also would hate to have to live in a cave for 10 yards, they love their luxury.
