  • Dimension 126 isn't a place. (Quanta)

Strangely worded headline. Strangely worded article.

126-dimensional spaces allow for certain strangely twisted shapes, that are possible only in spaces with dimensionality of the form 2n-2 - so 2, 6, 14, 30, 62 - but disproven in 2009 for spaces with 254 or more dimensions.

That left only 126 dimensional space to have this property confirmed or denied, and now it has been proven true.

  • Databricks is looking to acquire serverless Postgres company Neon in a deal valued at about $1 billion. (Upstarts Media)

Neon advertises its blazing speed with queries taking as little as ten milliseconds, which is miserably slow compared to running your own database and completely impossible if you are more than ten milliseconds away from one of their servers.

  • Touchscreens are everywhere, but proper tactile interfaces have significant benefits. But what if your touchscreen could form its own tactile buttons on demand? (The Verge)

LG is planning to show off exactly that next week, with a new automotive control interface featuring a touchscreen that changes shape instantly to create buttons and dials for physical controls.

The demo is intriguing, though the unit displayed is rather bulky and it's not clear how much of that bulk is necessary.

Musical Interlude

Hahaha

One more pointless thing to force the driver to take his eyes off the road in order to focus on what was solved by simple knobs and tactile dots and buttons 75 to 100 years ago.

It's funny how that short video clip could be part of an old Devo video. Devo indeed.

While it will be sold to the public by the media as one of the effects of the Trump Tariff War, I suspect that because the plant is deeply involved in VOLVO Electric Vehicle design and construction, that the work force reduction probably reflects a shift away from EV interest by buyers.

35 Evening to the late toilers, morning to the early risers and insomaniacals on this Tiu's Day!

Yours truly slept about six hours last night, amid a dream about cataloging and writing blurbs for a series of books my employer (whoever it was) was sending out. Half the time I had only heard descriptions of the books or the packets, so I had to wing it. A lot like many of my jobs in this life have been, come to think of it. Not a nightmare, at least.

So the stock market is back to where it was on 4/2? Trust the Force, Luke! Trust the process!

46 "Knock Three Times" (as well as "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" and "Sweet Gypsy Rose," to mention two others) were by Tony Orlando and Dawn. They were called simply "Dawn" at the time of the "Knock" song, but had added Tony's name by the time they recorded "Yellow Ribbon" in the early '70s. It was later, '79 to '81, that the song had a brief revival because of the American hostages in Iran.

Exactly. I do get where you are coming from Fenelon. But young boys and men these days are constantly subjected to messages about how they are horrible people because they are men. Heck, I remember some Moron here a while back talking about the positive message he gave boys as a Youth Pastor and the girls were furious that a man would dare say such things to boys.

A comforting poem, indeed. Thank you.

I have a good friend, a Calvinist lay Baptist minister who talked about this to me a week after her passing. We were walking along when I said we could possibly be together in Heaven. But what about Elon Musk? Who does he end up with?
"Salty, I said I am not going to preach to you, but now I am, It is different in Heaven. No physical sex. No jealousy. There is a deeper meeting of souls. "
He quoted the relevant Biblical passage. So I gots that.

137 "Neon advertises its blazing speed with queries taking as little as ten milliseconds, which is miserably slow compared to running your own database and completely impossible if you are more than ten milliseconds away from one of their servers."

I'm reminded of the story where some college or university couldn't send email more than 500 miles away. Literally couldn't - user was from a statistics department, ran tests, gathered data like they do. Techie could actually reproduce the issue. 400 miles away was good, but around 500 miles? No delivery.

End result of analysis - someone upgraded the server, which downgraded the mail system. Newer system had newer features for config. Older one didn't understand the newer format completely, so ignored some lines. Including the keep-alive/timeout time. So the system would try for zero seconds, +3 milliseconds for processing, and then kill the attempt. Which equated to about 500 miles considering the speed of light.
