Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - May 7, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT. [Top photo: Disclosed barn in an undisclosed location]![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Creative powerhouse VML, genomic innovators The Organoid Company, and sustainable biotechnology firm Lab-Grown Leather have joined forces to develop the world's first T-Rex leather made using the extinct creature's DNA. Interestingly, reports suggest that the first product could be available by year's end. They claim this next-gen material could be a high-quality, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly alternative to standard leather.No. Just no. Leave my tribe alone. (Hat tip: Iris) ![]() Mike Gabriel believes the airplane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean soon after takeoff. One crew member from the fuel delivery operation thinks the Angolan air force shot it down with a missile. A Luandan pilot says the word there is that the aircraft went north and vanished near Kinshasa, Congo. One of Ben Padilla's friends says the airplane was disassembled for parts in Bujumbura, Burundi, on Tanzania's western border. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As Beethoven flourished and gained musical notoriety, he noticed a decline in his hearing from his mid 20s. It began with a buzzing noise in his ears, and was a devastatingly scary time for the composer. While his hearing proceeded to decline over the next 15 years, Beethoven found ways to continue to compose music. At the age of 40, Beethoven was completely deaf, yet this was when he wrote his most famous symphony - Symphony No.9, also known as The Ninth. It is said that Beethoven used techniques to physically feel music and notes in his body. This included holding a pencil in his mouth and resting it against the piano so he could feel the vibrations of the notes against his lips. The lower notes emulated a deeper vibration, therefore, pieces written in the second half of his career included fewer high notes and more low ones. There is evidence that Beethoven also cut the legs of his pianos, so that the sound vibrations resonated through the ground and into his body as he wrote his compositions! Beethoven apparently ruined many pianos in his later career from hitting the keys so aggressively in order for him to 'hear' what he was playing.More: How did Beethoven write one of his greatest compositions while deaf? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. The fifty billion Mark note is particularly bad, because it’s 50 trillion marks.
They used the long system of factors of 1,000 so: 1 milliard = our 1 million 1 billion = our 1 trillion At the end of hyperinflation $1 was about 4.2 trillion Marks. So the 50 billion note pictured above was about $11.90. (Of course, back then, before America’s hyperinflation began, $11.90 was a lot of money, not a medium-sized Extra Value Meal.) I've been floating heavenward all day on Anton Bruckner's Symphony #9.
It was the last one he wrote, and has only the three movements: he never completed the fourth. He said: "You see, I have already dedicated two earthly majesty symphonies to poor King Ludwig as the royal patron of the arts. To our illustrious, dear Emperor as the highest earthly majesty, whom I acknowledge. "And now I dedicate my last work to the majesty of all the majesties, the beloved God, and hope that he will give me so much time to complete the same." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swULVZ5zLkM Posted by: Beverly at May 07, 2025 10:13 PM (Epeb0) 31

I left a link to the Vienna Philharmonic's performance of Bruckner's 9th. A German fellow left this comment: "The beginning of the first movement alone sounds as primal and empty, mysterious and threatening as the beginning of the world, the birth of the universe and sounds. Music like from another planet. And then the powerful, expressive main theme, such as the summit that has been climbed and the clear view over the Alps into the valleys. The Vienna Philharmonic plays fantastically!"

It was the last one he wrote, and has only the three movements: he never completed the fourth. _____________ I think he really did complete it, for some values of "complete". He worked on it literally up to the last day of his life. His apartment was ransacked by souvenir hunters after his death and little bits and pieces of the fourth movement are occasionally found. There are several performing versions of the finale, principally by William Carragan and Benjamin Cohrs. https://youtu.be/XM3wnkIS4Ao But the coda of the third movement is so remarkable, especially after the anguished dissonant shriek that precedes it, that a finale seems superfluous. Beethoven didn't have to hear the music to know what it sounded like. His training and experience informed his composition. He undoubtedly would have liked to hear it, but probably could hear the sound in his head without benefit of his ears.

More: How did Beethoven write one of his greatest compositions while deaf?
It's not really as curious as it seems. The human consciousness is imputed to us by our Creator, and all outward projection of that consciousness is just a means of relating it to other conscious beings. Language, music, art, imagery, they actually exist in the mind absent a means to project it, as does all other rational thought. It's the same consciousness that allows us to know and use hypotheticals like "How would I feel if I didn't eat breakfast?" without actually having to go through the sensory event each time to intrinsically comprehend it. So writing a symphony absent being able to hear it isn't really surprising, it's merely a means of conveyance of something that exists in the ethereal as a creation of a mind. The miracle, such as there is one, is that human consciousness is able to create something which has not been, to conceive, and produce. This is the spark of divine, the image of God, ingrained in mankind from conception. The marvel is not how to write a symphony without hearing it, the marvel is how to write one at all. Nurse, just reminding everyone I still have them might do the trick. Mom had a lot of tea cups, most English bone china pre 1960. Got left with me, but daughter in law saw them a few months ago and wanted them. Mom also had a LOT of Christmas village houses (Station 51? Christmas 51?) Daughter helped me sort them out last year, and she ended up taking a few, with a niece scooping up the rest. I'd had this stuff for over six years with no interest!

I will say this, trying to build out my own Project Management ERP has been very educational in that there are so many off the shelf open frameworks to utilize that I have been able to cobble together a very rudimentary structure in about a month.
The other illuminating thing is the reason I'm building out my own is that my company has been whacking away at doing this for 8 f**king years, through different regimes and different development teams, spending untold millions of dollars and delivering jack squat nothing. Well not quite nothing, the tools they have assembled are primarily financial tools, but don't cut the mustard for managing large scale projects, which we do, but with tools that approximate bear skins and knives. Usually the best collectibles are ephemera; stuff that ws made to be used up and thrown away. Matchbook covers, toys, beer cans, phonograph records, etc. Even big things like cars, appliances, radios, and TV sets.
Stuff that is promoted to be collectible usually is collected, and as result, nearly everyone who wants the stuff already has it, and there is no market. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 07, 2025 11:48 PM (/LEkU) 257

I am setting up a new PC - it is tedious work. On the upside I have been listening to a bunch of music. Mini Review. This album was panned by the critics; they are idiots. I hadn't listened to it in its entirety for a number of years until a few days ago. It is some wildly overlooked work by the band. Petty is in a furious mood about the state of the music business in general. From the personal perspective he laments the loss of being able to pool money, go see a band, and be inspired. By extension he is mostly riled up by the losses in life, it peppers the whole album. It is worth a spin. This is a live version of the title track and the band crushes it.

The same teacher taught the same grade for years, so all your sisters that went before... well, expectations were higher than reality in my case.
I still have strangers come up to me and ask about my dad. He knew everybody in Anchorage, and most folks on the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska remains a small town in many ways. Posted by: tcn in AK at May 08, 2025 12:11 AM (a4NoL) 287

Serously, for health reasons I haven’t been able to cook and sit at a table for weeks. The pain started in 10 minutes, became excruciating at 15 minutes, standing or sitting. Only thing for it was to lie down, which eased the pain almost immediately. So if I couldn’t have gotten to Larry’s Subs in town (I’ve raked the driver’s seat back like a low rider - I can see over the hood and can operate the vehicle safely) I would have starved. As it is, I’ve lost 16 lbs. I tipped the waitstaff extra to bring the sandwiches out to my truck. I could make the trip to the Tundra and back, stopping at the fridge to stash extra 12 inch sandwiches, grab a bag of potato chips, and a paper plate on a wicker tray, and cold bottled drink. Then I would lie on my back with the plate on my chest and eat on my back in bed. No matter how good the sandwiches are, you get tired of them. I can see why the Hebrews wanted some meat after a steady, monotonous diet of mana, the celestial food.

And I am one of those troglodytes who collected Precious Monents (and other) figurines - mostly because my mother enrolled Daughter #1 in the Kid's Birthday Club when she was born. I wasn't a hard core collector, but I didn't get their space-related figurines, due to being a NASA kid. And I collected a different series because they looked so much like #2 daughter it was scary.
I bought the ones that brought me joy; never got them with an eye to future value - that wasn't ever my intent. I still like looking at them, usually because each one was purchased to commemorate a happy time in my life. My poor family is going to have to deal with them when I am gone.... I may send them here, if anyone wants one 🤣🤣🤣 Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Texas - Ace of Spades Ladies Brigade, plucky comic relief at May 08, 2025 12:21 AM (SRRAx) 298
First time ever.
Our county [Butte] hired a goat herd contractor and they've got them grazing along a diversion canal bottom and esrthen dyke that runs through town. I saw about 100 goats and a trailered 1000 gallon water guzzler. The temp fence is pretty light weight but will suffice unless a neighborhood dog gets inside the fence. I didn't see a herd sentinel dog, but that doesn't mean that that there aren't three or four of them lurking. Posted by: 13times at May 08, 2025 12:23 AM (zXoXa) 299

So good news! Thank the Lord, after my surgery, I have been able to sit indefinitely in a straight back chair, provided I put a large throw pillow in that chair, so I can recline. I can also stand long enough to cook something. I started with my “Eggs in a Nest” recipe I gave a few nights back on the blog. Then I heated a whole can (two regular bowls worth) of Campbell’s OLD BAY® Seasoned Clam Chowder. I have a couple of extra large bowls, so I put the whole thing in one of them and proceeded to chow down. You may wrinkle your nose at Campbell’s, but it was good. Had some toast rusks on the side. And last night! I made a three egg omelette with mushrooms, bacon, and grated sharp cheddar cheese. I made a chamomile and spearmint herbal infusion from Celestial Seasonings in my good old Blue Bettie pot, cause I don’t want caffeine at night. I put 4 bags in for two cups, and steeped it for 6 minutes: it still came out weak - typical for herbal “teas” I’m afraid. Anyway it was delicious! And yes, I went out to eat for lunch today because I could, and I wanted to. I got a lunch special at Cracker Barrel (yes, wrinkle that nose!). It was _good_!!

Get in, gain some element of control, promote your degeneracy, and you succeed regardless. "the commie left (that's not the original and has been sanitized for ace's protection) doesn't want gay pride parades in your street, drag queens in your libraries, your son transgender, your parents dead from opioids and cancer, your daughter race mixing, your meat replaced with bugs all while your media laughs at you because they think it's for anyone's benefit. Could make biscuits using the reflector oven or on a weekend camps spaghetti and meatballs; I mean, we didn't starve or eat crappy food. Learned how to make fire and cook on it. The pans were shitty so you learned real fast what not to do. Cleaned pans in river sand. Yep, self-sufficient independence. Terrible thing -- for totalitarians. My Eagle medal feels cheapened, just like the Dems did to my Birthright Citizenship. This country went so far left and, thanks to DOGE, we paid for the propaganda to do so. Between the motivation of welfare and the non-monogamous "gay marriage" cosplaying absurdity, it worked beautifully. And now here we are, with illegitimate children 100% accepted and celebrated in almost all parts of society, polyamory a fairly mainstream idea, and women willingly coordinating harems amongst themselves in order to be briefly used sexually by the top 20% of men in any given regional population. They figured out how to destroy the family.* I don't know how they could have succeeded at any higher level. * We won't even get into turning brother against brother regarding COVID Posted by: Boron Cobbie - smile and satisfy your boss' every desire, but not tonight dear I have a headache at May 08, 2025 02:51 AM (g7exq) 349

In college, I stopped by to see him as my Mom told me he was in bad shape. While I was there, another former scout, from before my time, dropped by. He was a Naval Aviator. Mr. Ira C. Well, Mr. Cobbie, it doesn't work that way any more.
We're FOSSILS, dude. - I don't disagree. I will say that part of our responsibility is to not require young people to have to re-learn what we (and Western Civilization as a whole) have known for literally thousands of years. People tend to see even having the conversation in an attempt to help youth as "bashing" or "toxic" or what-not, but there's no other way to have it. We know with 100% certainty what works. We've observed the last 50+ years and know without a doubt that THIS does not work. It doesn't work that way anymore. We have to teach our children that it did work and *does* work, though. The difficult part will be similar to cell phones. They learn by example. Show them, don't tell them. And re-forming functioning families when there are financial motivations at both the personal and government level for its continued destruction will be extremely difficult to do. Probably at the level of achieving meaningful restrictions/bans on abortion (which is closely tied to the overall collapse , too). I was unable to teach by example, Boron Cobbie. I was unable to have children.
Hubby & XW had to adopt, and only got *one* child. He's great, but I had little to do with raising him, as he was 16 by the time hubs and I got together... Can't complain, but also cannot take credit. He's a confirmed bachelor (the divorce scarred him terribly, I suspect) and if he ever has kids, will likely be of the step- variety. JQ. You should read Hilary Spurling's biography of Pearl Buck titled Pearl Buck in China: Journey to the Good Earth.
Pearl is one of the most interesting women of the 20th century - especially her life in China from when she was a tiny child until she was 30. One of the themes being how Pearl and her mother are just whoopie cushions. Pearl pretty much rejects that nonsense. Posted by: 13times at May 08, 2025 03:46 AM (zXoXa) 363

I will always avoid anything too personal. I will say that yes, relationship and resources from the man in exchange for sex / sexual access from the woman has been the understood coin of the realm.
Sadly I think that once feminists convinced women that the most valuable thing they possessed was valueless, so did the overall understanding of meaningful relationships as a whole. And that's a downward spiral right from the start, especially if the people getting married didn't grow up as children of married people. It sounds harsh but I would encourage any young person to carefully consider marriage to someone from a broken home. Similar to baby mommas daughters hearing how awesome life is and how brave mommy is and then growing up to predictably also become baby mommas, you know going in what the likely outcome of that marriage will be. Pearl married a man totally dedicated to his work - to the exclusion of his wife and children. It's a tragedy because he's a decent man who should've never married. Plus, living in 1900-1930 rural China was not an easy or safe way of life.

- I think it's even worse, and we got a glimpse of it a few years ago. Remember when corporations were openly saying they'd provide transportation for women to travel to another state to kill their babies (unsaid: so the women wouldn't miss work, quit the job, or require hiring / retraining another employee)? I think that was a glimpse of the truth and what the prime mover was so many years ago, similar to how women didn't want voting rights but they were simultaneously pushed through / onto them by the governments of 1st world nations (sound familiar?) Industrialized times need industrialized disposable widgets to be used and discarded. I don't think it's M vs F. We're a team and always have been. What we've got to figure out is how to work together again, and acknowledge that we know a lot (if not all) of the answers already. At the computer game company I worked at in the 80s, we one day received the preferred providers books for our health coverage. We discovered there was an OB/GYN in Ventura named Martha Beaver. We tried to convince the female employees that one of them needed to book an appointment, if only to find out if the doctor had been born to that name or acquired it via marriage.
