7 The huge Raising of Lazarus, one of four vast canvases painted by Jouvenet early in the eighteenth century for the church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in Paris, is a tour-de-force of hes realistic vein combined with the elevated and idealized.

23 This painting reminds me of something that's always bothered me about classical paintings of Christ and / or the Apostles - with rare exceptions, it seems almost cliche that Jesus is portrayed as being in his early 30s, yet the disciples tend to be painted as old, balding men with yuge gray / white beards.

39 11 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair.[a] Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”

4 But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”

70 Besides Juvenet's use of color, especially for clothing and skin tones, this painting captures the feel of the scene. The many poses and expressions of the people reflect the many reactions of the crowd: confusion, amazement, wonder, worship, fear, doubt. The brilliant figures of Christ and the woman, just off center, lead the viewer down into the rocky crypt with its harsh angles and darkness alleviated only by a few torches. The contrast of light and power against the somber browns is striking.

It brings to mind a passage from LOTR:

"Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope he ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory."

Dead bodies start to smell between 24 and 72 hours (ie. 3 days).

As the Psalm says 'Thou shall not allow your Holy One to see corruption", I half suspect that is the original impetus for the 3 days before Jesus' resurrection.

132 Oh look, another judge-king, another royal decree.

This time, from a repeat player; ordering Trump not to drawdown and dismantle agencies.

See, when the Constitution used the word "executive" and "execute," they really meant "administrator" and "administrate."

It never meant for the Executive to be a co-equal branch to Congress (and certainly not the Judiciary!):
If Congress passes a law and if Congress allocates funds, the President must enforce the law and must spend all the money exactly as Congress directs.*

Also, magically and suddenly, states now have standing to sue to force the federal government to spend money.*

* Not applicable to Democrat Presidents or administrations.

156 The judge-king ruled that, because the states may suffer harm from the loss of federal spending, they have standing to sue.

But, that's never been the rule on standing ever:
Suffering harm has never been the sole basis for a cause of action or a right to sue.

This is not "I got hit by a car, was hurt, and am suing the driver."
This is "the grocery store I like lost it's lease, so now I'll have to pay more for food, so I'm suing the landlord."
And the judge-king is like, "granted! Give the store back it's lease for free!"

>First things dot com: The Church after Francis, Charles J. Chaput, April 21, 2025

>The Philadelphia Inquirer, Opinion, today
Philly Archbishop Emeritus Charles J. Chaput recently wrote about Pope Francis. His take is narrow and troubling.
Chaput may assert the pope was "inadequate to the real issues," but the truth is that Francis was challenging to those more often concerned with ideological policing than with pastoral care.

USA Today, May 7, 2025, What time does the 2025 conclave start? See May 7 schedule

In part, "The sacred practice of naming a new pope is soon beginning as more than 130 cardinals arrive in Vatican City to participate in May 7's papal conclave and millions around the world tune in to watch for white smoke."

I've always appreciated Chaput's honesty & practicality.

190 AP News, Conclave by the numbers
By Curtis Lee

There are more than 400,000 Catholic priests around the world — out of them, just 252 are cardinals.

Only 133 “cardinals electors” are expected to cast ballots in the conclave; cardinals age 80 and over cannot vote.

That means a minimum of 89 cardinals — a two-thirds majority — must agree in their ballot to elect a new pope.

Of the 133 voting-eligible cardinals, 108 were appointed by Pope Francis, so this is their first conclave.

Cardinals from over 70 countries are present, making this the most geographically diverse conclave in history.
