I read the article.

You can ask ChatGPT to do very, very simple tasks like "please make a list of ten famous actors from the 1990s" (arbitrary example) and it will put Rock Hudson or some other actor from decades earlier in the list. Or do the same with actresses from the 1950s and you'll end up with Ellen Degeneres in the list.

It's absurdly bad at things. Even things it's just attempting to outright steal / scrape from other sites that properly list them.

I sort of love that people are viewing it as a messiah and asking it for Truth.

20 The B770 GPU could be here as soon as Computex, which is in just (searches frantically) over two weeks. (WCCFTech)

This will likely be a mid-range 16GB card. The existing B580 offers 12GB of RAM at $250, which is already a better bet in the current market than 8GB cards, except for the minor problem that there aren't any.

-

My A770 has been absolutely outstanding.

If they could get this priced at $280 to $300 (and make it easily compatible with comfyui / SDXL, which it won't be) it would take a YUGE chunk of the market.

16GB is the bare minimum these days for a decent card, and NVIDIA is cranking out already outdated 8 and barely passable 12 and charging $500-$800 for them by pretending software to increase frame rates justifies the increased prices.

21 So some of you on yesterday's morning tech thread may remember some banter about my focus on dialing in the new home HVAC system.

Pawn gave a reply after I had already left the blog to get ready for church, but it is a post that really goes to the heart of the issue I am facing with poor humidity control, and I have pasted it here.

--------
VIA, if you are still here, one of the key factors in dehumidification is the fan coil surface temp which is highly dependent on the CFM.

You probably know this already.

I don't know how all these new variable speed compressors and fans work together but they probably limit your system flexibility just to keep people from messing things up so they play it safe and pedestrian.

Tweaking your home AC is pretty out there as far as a population goes.

Just try dropping your peak CFM by 75% and see if that makes any difference. And keep your outside air damper open just a bit, unless you do a lot of cooking.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 05, 2025 05:20 AM (a1415)

22 And o give pawn some feedback from the technicians installation manual, which I am referring to, and learning more and more about on a daily basis.

During the original install there is a key step known as the automated test series, which puts the unit through its paces, setting key CFM upper and lower limitations in order for supply duct temps to hit key set points at both upper and lower heat and cooling demands. When done properly, this key step will establish the speed profiles for both the scroll compressor in the heat pump and the blower speed profile in the air handler in order to most efficiently hit those target temperature points.

It also allows the air handler to shift to dehumidification mode with a lower indoor coil temp, with a lower blower speed to shift to the 'Cold Coil' mode removing more latent heat and really pull the humidity down.

In the Technician mode, these points are all adjustable once the tests are run in order to fine tune the system for unique individual home and zone characteristics.

25 Ahhh, HVAC.

Drop your flow to get a better coil temp for dehumid, and now you're not getting the changeover rate you need to actually dehumidify the space effectively.

Sometimes you're just stuck in a world of robbed Peters and a Paul sitting on a stack of IOUs.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at May 05, 2025 05:35 AM (kBh81)

26 (Cont)
Duct temp limit is adjustable in one degree increments with a target of 45 degrees, adjustable as low as 40 degrees if needed.

Fan low and high speed limits are adjustable in 25 CFM increments in both heat and cool modes and those modes are independent of each other.

The more I learn, the more amazed I am at the precision temperature and humidity control that can be achieved in a full communicating, fully variable heat pump system...when set up properly.

Did I mention that one of the reports available in the Tech mode is the report on the results of the automated tests that are required to be run during initial install?

My report reads "skipped' on each and every one of the tests, and explains why my CFM's are all over the place.

With that report, I should be able to get the business owner's attention, and between us, get this dialed in correctly. Including the thermostat inaccuracy issue.

31 "Sometimes you're just stuck in a world of robbed Peters and a Paul sitting on a stack of IOUs."

Absolutely.

But first, let's get the system running the way that it is intended, and see what we wind up with.

The air handler is designed to go as low as 425 CFM lower limit and a high limit of around 2300 CFM as controlled by the t-stat.

Right now, both upstairs (1,800 square foot area) and downstairs (1,000 Square foot area) have cooling low limits of 875 CFM despite the disparity in square footage, and that is a reduction from the 1,200 CFM limit that was there during the initial trouble call to deal with the humidity.

Technician completely missed my attempt to discuss bringing off-coil temp down to the intended 45 degree factory set point by telling me the old single stage compressor/single speed air handler explanation of only getting about a 12 degree in/out split, and I needed to be happy with that. Of course he was also unaware that none of the initial commissioning automated tests had been run yet either, so we have that to deal with.

Even in the commercial world, the magical arcane ritual known as "Start-Up", which only the state approved anointed can perform to satisfy the gods of the Carnot Cycle satisfactorily, consists of throwing the disconnect on and waiting to see if everything gets noisy and spinny. And then some other poor hump can find out later if it's spinny in the wrong direction or not.

42 And finally...

"The air handler is designed to go as low as 425 CFM lower limit and a high limit of around 2300 CFM as controlled by the t-stat."

Due to the low speed limit of the blower being capped at such a high air flow rate, my duct temperature downstream of the coil will not get below 58 degrees. Sort of explains the lack of humidity control.

The tech is familiar with my background, and we have an agreement that I am the old fart that knows just enough to be dangerous, and I have promised to never make any tech level changes to the system, as it would have him chasing ghosts if both he and I are tweeting the system.

But I never promised that I would not gather data and learn from that data and manufacturers publications..

Well, Lauren Graham, but it was clearly her Lorelai character from Gilmore Girls. We were working together at a hotel (not hers) on some project, and even in my dream state I could see she was hinting I should walk her out to her car after we finished. We were working with another woman, a fairly attractive redhead Lorelai clearly didn't like.

We were standing in a separate area. I said, "I see she is not your favorite person." "Whatever gave you that idea," Lorelai murmured. I smiled. "I'm the same way. Lorelai, when the two of you are in a room, she looks like leftovers."

And she gave me that Lauren/Lorelai thousand-watt smile. I tingled as if the air pressure around me had dropped suddenly.

Alcatraz is federal property. America's prisons are overcrowded.
The solution isn't to let violent criminals onto the streets. It's to build more prisons.
Seems like a perfectly reasonable solution to me. Find something less dumb to complain about.

I find this highly amusing.

If there's one thing AI could do for me, it would be to answer a question like, "Suggest patent classifications for a copper-chabazite catalyst used in selective catalyst reduction of NOx."

Of course, I'd check them to make sure they actually exist, but it would save a ton of time scrambling up and down the classification tables at the USPTO.
