Google pays 80% of the budget for Safari and Mozilla, Edge is just Chrome, and Chrome actually is Chrome. So with Google's illegal practices on multiple fronts coming to a head with the company losing two antitrust cases, the whole metastatic structure is set to implode.
More than that, Google's payments to Apple, which are likely to end abruptly, cover 60% of the latter company's total R&D budget.

- Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti 8GB model loses up to 10 percent of performance when running with PCIe 4.0. (Tom's Hardware)
That's accurate in itself, but the main story is don't even think about buying the 8GB model.
For example, playing Dragon Age Veilguard - which nobody does; the game flopped hard - the 16GB card achieves a reasonable 57 fps at 1440p, dropping very slightly to 56.9 fps when using a PCIe 4.0 slot. Fair enough and in line with other tests. Even the 5090 only loses a couple of percentage points in performance with a PCIe 4.0 slot.
With the 8GB model, performance drops to just 34 fps. And with the 8GB model in a PCIe 4.0 slot, it can't even manage 5 fps.
Most games cope better than that, but some games were even worse. The new Indiana Jones game would not run at all on the 8GB version with the same settings used on the 16GB card, and Spider-Man 2 ran but crashed often enough on the 8GB card to make it a truly miserable experience.
The two 5060 Ti models share a name, but the 16GB model is adequate, while the 8GB model is simply inadequate.

It seems that a thousand dollar, full communicating thermostat comes with some very serious computing power. The kind of power that generates..well...heat!
And this heat rises up through the thermostat housing through the vents on top ( Remember where we each placed our hand held devices to ensure that the thermostat was reading correctly), and in a 72 degree room, causes the TOP of the thermostat to heat up to as much as 85 degrees, causing even the wall above the thermostat to be at an elevated temperature for almost 9 inches above the thermostat.
So.....we each have some learning to do.
And that is only the beginning of the perimeter set point issues that wee have to deal with.
Gonna be fun.

It's amazing how much of America and American lives are controlled by Google. IIRC there was research done to show that they influence something like 24M votes in elections. In that same talk (by a rabid Democrat BTW) it was discussed how they told likely D voters it was election day, how to vote, where to vote, etc on their phones.

I saw where these are in stock for ordering at Amazon for MSRP. I assume the 16GB is same as the 4060 model and is aimed at the Stable Diffusion crowd, but yeah, they probably shouldn't even be offering an 8GB model any longer. I guess they hope to make up for the inadequate performance with software parlor tricks, all while charging functioning hardware prices.

Well, I've noticed that Texas doesn't appear to think that it would be a good idea for hot air to be introduced at ground level. While it's certainly true that most of the time here you are introducing cool air at the ceiling level to drift down, there is a non-trivial amount of days where you'd like to introduce hot air near the floor where it will drift up to warm the space.

My position is that perfect air requires precision accuracy, and precise operating set points.
You want to advertise that a system will maintain temps within 1/2 to 1 degree, you had better have the right components running at the right speeds at the right time.
And it all really starts with accurate room temperature, when dealing with zoned units.
And cooling/heating schedules.
And compressor and air handler speeds.
Otherwise, zones argue with each other, and duct temps never get cool enough for proper humidity control.

That is the basic premise of zone control with this.
Upstairs is a dumb thermostat that reports to the master thermostat located downstairs.
The master thermostat is the only unit that has humidity control set-points.
When not using scheduling, you can set upstairs temp differently from downstairs, but when running in scheduled mode, the schedule and temp set points are slaved to the master thermostat.
And on top of that, if the tech incorrectly sets the high and low CFM set points for heating and cooling the zones, it throws everything out of wack.
AND, if you set the master high and low set points incorrectly ( Another step in setting the system up), it prevents the individual zone CFM requirements from being controlled properly. Hence the poor humidity control that I have.

After downloading and reading the installer instructions for all the components for five days, I can say that if set up correctly, this is an amazing system, with capabilities that will amaze you.
BUT...it takes setting aside the old rules of thumb that most tech's grew up with. And an incredible attention to detail during set-up and validation.
It's the south...or as the tech told me.." Mr VIA, round these parts, most folks won't spend what you spent for this system. There are only like six of them in the entire lowcountry' as well as ' most of the stuff this thing does, I don't even know how it does it, and it takes multiple visits too get it set up right'.
And after really getting my brain into how everything interacts, it's really simple, but you gotta do all the steps in commissioning the unit, in the correct order, with proper calculations.
And it's the south..

Yup.
To their credit, the tech manual discusses the designed ability to 'after using external temperature sensing equipment' adjusting the thermostat indicated temperature +/- 10 degrees during set-up.
It's all there, but you gotta read the manual. And it involves math.
It doesn't involve duct tape and caulking.
And..did I mention, it's in the south.

Controlled by the zone board, and intended to only open and draw in fresh air when there is a conditioning call from the thermostat. It was part of the original HVAC install during the home construction. The home is so air-tight that it needs to independently draw in fresh air to maintain indoor air quality. And when no heating/cooling is taking place, that damper closes off. So when the air handler runs to simply circulate air in the home, it doesn't draw in unconditioned air and distribute it throughout the house. It only is 5.6% of the total air movement though the air handler, but if unconditioned, it will throw off humidity and temperature control.
The damper is jammed in the open position, AND the board is set up incorrectly so that any time the air handler fan runs, including during circulation cycles, the fresh air damper will open. That is, if it weren't already jammed in the open position.

The company may have repeatedly done stupid things and injured itself in the perception of its users, but the products are still viable.
Firefox with the right add-ons* is still quite usable and functional. Over the years I've made a ton of tweaks to turn crap off in the underlying configuration (about:config) as well, but I've always kept that profile going. Starting afresh with a new profile, I'd probably have to locate and change a ton of settings and that wouldn't be fun at all.
I also use Thunderbird as my e-mail program. It works just fine.

Mozilla has also previously tried to switch all users’ default search engines, and it didn’t go well. Between 2014 and 2017, the company made Yahoo the default on its browser, and found that people disliked the experience so much that they switched to another browser altogether.
I don’t remember this, probably because I immediately changed the default search engine in settings. Mine is set to Brave Search currently.
And even if I hadn’t done that, Firefox (Waterfox in my case) allows you to change which search engine you use each time by hitting a button next to the search box and picking out of a list which engine you want to use.
And even if you didn’t know that, all you have to do is, ya know, type in google.com and then do your search there.
Is web browsing really so unintuitive these days that most people don’t realize these things?
I never in a million years would have thought “Uh oh, they changed my search to Bing, I’m going to have to download Google Chrome now to search in Google!”.
But apparently a lot of people thought that.

I should add that my version of firefox is 136.0.2 (mint-001), running on Linux Mint. There's a 138.0 I can upgrade to, and probably will soon. (This is something else I love about running Firefox on Mint, I get to choose when it updates, not Mozilla.)

I haven’t used Firefox, apart from iOS in almost a decade.
It’s not even installed on my current Windows PC.
Once Mozilla decided to add Pocket and a bunch of other things I didn’t want which bloated up the browser so much it took forever to load and kept crashing, I found the magic of software forking and never looked back.
Never did like Chrome after I installed it one time back in 2010 or so.

It is t considered a major browser but it’s quite good for people who don’t want to use Add-Ons or Extensions to be able to block Ads, etc.
It automatically blocks Ads for you.
Other than that it’s pretty much like every other browser.
It may have problems on a few sites, like a lot of “off brand” browsers have but for 95% of typical web surfing it’s fine.
It also has its own search engine with a handy-dandy AI, which I use often.

Safari has never appealed to me.
But I started using the web in the late 90s, so I was always used to Netscape.
When Netscape bit the dust I had to use Internet Explorer like everybody else.
Until Firefox came out, and I used it for years and years until Mozilla started adding things.
It comes down to what people are accustomed to using. Everybody likes what they like in certain browsers but when you get right down to it, the websites all look about the same on them so it’s really down to personal preference over the creature comforts each browser offers.

I switched from Ad-block Plus to uBlock Origin because Ad-block plus started playing around with "acceptable ads". Hard "No!" from me on that. I will determine what acceptable is, and it's "none of them."
And I don't care how the add-ons accomplish what they accomplish so long as the UI acts, looks, and feels like I'm comfortable with. I'm happy with what I have right now, so I'm sticking with it.
As soon as that changes significantly, I'll explore other options. I'll probably end up starting with a serious look at "Brave".
The funding changes for existing browsers will likely cause this to be the inflection point for a major shakeup. Yay, more change. *sighs*

On my Android phone it's been rendered pretty much unusable.
Sometimes it will work ok, but often it sends me a a page of nothing but ads and almost always lands on an unpleasant image of someone squeezing their obese belly fat.
I've learned to hit the back button twice (why not just once?) and then hit refresh.
Yeah, it's just four taps of the index finger, but still.
I miss the old "Jump to the bottom of the comments" link. Used it all the time.

I just picked up a new Genesis GV80. My trade-in was a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.
Oh My. Biometrics to start the car. A damned camera that is sitting on the steering wheel stem that is aimed at the driver to determine if the driver is alive, awake and occasionally looking at the road. They say that you have to put the car on a trickle charger if you leave it alone for a couple weeks - apparently the full time sensors and connection to Skynet is part of the deal.
The offer to give very specific and detailed assessments to insurance companies on driver habits, and I have heard that one rowdy driver was threatened by the manufacturer to void the warranty for driving with too much spirit.
I may go get my old car back, that is if they haven't crushed it.

That has been true for well over a decade. I no longer use any of the popular search engines because of this problem.
The cool kids have moved on to AI queries. DDG was playing around with it for a while and it has gradually increased sucking - just like AI for coding is getting worse and worse with each update and lousy third worlder who is pushing crappy code on to public GitHub repositories.
Also, as more and more of the once open-source goes subscription or corporate, there are more forks of the last known GPL code and now the training algs are picking up on the vast bespoke implementations which is driving up hallucinations and bogus APIs.
So search engines are dead, and AI is collapsing. We might have to learn how to use dead trees and talk to each other again.

Again, I get it. But unless you've got access to the primary source, you're going to have to learn of it from some secondary source. Which before the internet and search engines was limited to books. Which in turn required finding the right book. Which still might leave you with questions about whether the primary source is being accurately reflected.
I just don't see how search engines are anything but an advance in terms of options for getting you to a secondary source, the quality of which you can judge for yourself. Or in many instances to a primary source.

I have been agonizing of the lease return vs new for a while... mostly because a lease return has cared for - to a degree and the savings from the immediate depreciation is smaller.
The Powers That Be have demanded more and more crap on cars: back-up cameras, OTA firmware/software updates, tire pressure sensors, blind spot monitors. Heck even the rear gate and seats are on motors.
I'm not such a troglodyte that I demand Armstrong windows, but it has never been a burden to walk the car, note tire pressure, and lift and lower the gate manually. My neck works and I can turn it to see behind me when backing and the bare minimums of situational awareness should overcome the dreaded "blind spot"s.
But I have to burn extra fuel to haul a crate of motors and sensors on things that never needed motors and sensors. Really, does tilt steering need a motor? The dome light still on? Check the doors I don't need a full lighted graphical display and chimes. I don't need a warning when I turn off the car to check the backseat for forgotten passengers.

Good illustration of why I disagree. A search engine will actually get you to same library card catalogue as the one at the computer terminal in the library. Most of physical catalogues are long gone.
And the search engine will produce a ton of other, irrelevant and biased results. Even so, I see this as an improvement over having no option but going to the library, because even with all that irrelevant and biased shit, I still think I'll find that online link to the library catalogue quicker than if I had to drive there.

My daily driver is a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 2wd with 340,000 miles on it. For what the wife's car cost each month I could replace any major component on it and sort of have been. Short of engine and transmission I will have a new truck one part at a time eventually.
I'm thinking next it new carpet and having the seat redone. I have stayed away from comfort things as I wanted to be confident the important stuff was good to go first. Now I might even paint it.

Same here with my much-younger '16 Buick LaCrosse. The hood, roof, and trunk have faded just a little from hard sun in the almost six years since I bought it; painting might not be a bad idea. Mechanically it feels like a new car and I still smile when I walk up to it. The interior is almost new except for some shine on the driver's seat leather -- to be expected.

With my wife's car, the system's default is off. If you want it, you have to push the button to enable it. Fine. No problem. Just another system to ignore.
With my car, however, the system default is on. Every damn time I start the car I have to remember to push the button to disable it. I remember to do that less than half the time.
I've never hated a car system more than idle-stop.

You probably know this already.
I don't know how all these new variable speed compressors and fans work together but they probably limit your system flexibility just to keep people from messing things up so they play it safe and pedestrian.
Tweaking your home AC is pretty out there as far as a population goes.
Just try dropping your peak CFM by 75% and see if that makes any difference. And keep your outside air damper open just a bit, unless you do a lot of cooking.

The '17-'19 LaCrosses default was that ASS (Auto-start-stop) was on, and you couldn't turn it off or defeat it without a $150 aftermarket device. I was glad to go with the '16, which has none of that.
My '15 BMW (RIP) would remember the setting from the last time -- off would stay off. But again, that was ten years ago.

I do a Ctrl-Alt-Del which brings up a menu and I choose Task Manager. When that starts (or is running) everything works fine.
