Miss Linda is over and using the steam mop of the kitchen floor, so I can't retrieve the remnants of this morning's coffee which I popped into the fridge. No snacks either. Probably for the best.
She wanted us to go through my closet, find pants that don't fit me any more or which are torn or stained beyond help, and bundle up the rejects. Well, I tried on all the slacks and the two suits before she got here; I didn't feel like being a fashion model. Turns out 99% of the items still fit me, or fit me again. One Jos. A. Bank suit I bought in 1997 (dark gray, banker pinstripe) has pants that are a fraction snug, but everything else is okay. Weird. My girl spawn saw Sinners and said it was very good. Had a lot of blues music in it. She was listening to that music yesterday and I asked when she started listening to blues. I tried to get her to listen to some that I enjoy but she was in to electronic pop at the time. Finally she gets blues!
I have found with her that suggestion doesn't work. I just put on music I like and if it sounds interesting to her she will look at the name of the song or artist and find more. If she doesn't care for it, she shuts her bedroom door. I have rather eclectic taste in music and I never know what might catch her ear. But I also never know what I will be listening to until the right song comes up. Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at May 03, 2025 11:23 AM (2J/Lj) 88

Hard to believe that the books they were "based on" came from the same fellow, Donald Hamilton, who gave us the novel that became the epic The Big Country with Gregory Peck and Burl Ives. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius ======= For a mass audience in those days, you rounded off the rough edges in screenplays based on original books. Including Bond novels. This is one of my basic beliefs, that we're ruled by people who live in those crowded places, and they really have no idea there are people living lives differently from them.
So when they make rulings based on their limited view, they create problems that never existed before. Posted by: Dr_No at May 03, 2025 11:28 AM (ayRl+) I never paid much attention to the Allman Brothers until recently. I always liked the studio version of Whipping Post better than the live version but one rarely hears it. Lately however, I have become fascinated with Gregg Allman's voice. Damn! That man could sing! I watched a couple of videos of him doing I'm No Angel live and it was not fun. His eyes were just empty. No joy or any other emotion whatsoever. It was like he was just an automaton going thru the programmed motions. Made me sad. _______________________________________ Madame M ... Duane was the one who 'felt' the music more than Gregg. I agree with you that, no matter how well he sang, it was always like watching an automaton. - I initially read that as "still has a yard", which also applies. I saw something related recently and learned an interesting lesson that I'd never considered before. If a Southerner buys 20 acres he'll likely sit on his porch and admire the beauty. If a Yankee buys the near-identical 20 acres next to that property he's going to try to put a house on every half acre. That's my entire point.
We've become so specialized that we can consume what we want when we want. There is virtually nothing shared with other Americans any longer because of Google, Amazon, and Netflix. Understood, but again, it depends on the level at which you're looking. Sure, we all look at different things on those formats, but we all use the format. Therefore, if I complain about shipping at Amazon, then everyone who's ever had a problem regardless of the specific item, can chime in and tell their story. The same thing happens with flying. Very few people used to fly, but now everyone does, and everyone has horror stories about how bad they are. Looked at another way, there's a reason we're driving ourselves crazy in a 24/7 news culture. They take the worst from around the world, and everyone can wallow in the resulting bad feelings. In the old days, if there was a famine in India, you never heard about it. Posted by: Archimedes at May 03, 2025 12:05 PM (s8j++) 182

- I heard someone discussing the latter recently and he made a great point about why modern women are so aggressive and masculine and often foul mouthed. They don't have the same consequences as men. Men enter every conversation with a man knowing there are words that will immediately move the interaction into physical violence. Women not only don't have that understanding, but they have been taught that there are NO words that will move a conversation with a man to physical violence. You remind me of why I disagree with women being officers outside of investigations or helping with women and children. If a woman is hurt the men will want to immediately help. They can't help it. If another man is hurt they'll finish the job so they can go back to help. The odds of you finding a person seated next to you that can and wants small talk is probably close to winning 100 bucks on a dime slot machine. The willingness and ability to carry on an extended conversation about any topic is similar to buying a winning 10K scratch off ticket. The odds of them having familiarity with anything beyond superficial topics is megamillions lottery odds.
I don't find that to be true at all. Here's an example. Yesterday, my wife and I were test driving a car. The salesman, a very nice guy, had to ride along to make sure I didn't steal the car. We got to talking about EVs, and he was very neutral to begin with. I then started talking about how foolish people are who think they're saving the planet by buying one of those, and how they never think about the system costs. I mentioned kids digging up Coltan in Africa as an example. That was all he needed to be off to the races, telling me about all the fools who come in saying they would only by an EV, and what a pity that Acura didn't have them. We had a very nice conversation, and would probably never have interacted otherwise, because we probably travel in different circles. Posted by: Archimedes at May 03, 2025 12:55 PM (s8j++) 221

Huh. I had never heard of coltan before. Learned something new.

Regionalism is the backbone of a free republic. Southern states still have it. Not sure about you yankies.

There are 3 horses that are descendants of Secretariat.
Sandman and Final Gambit are five generations from the legend, while Chunk of Gold is six generations from him.
