Nope! You Don't Hate The Media Enough.

U.S. payroll growth totals 177,000 in April, defying expectations

Job growth was stronger than expected in April despite worries over the impact of President Donald Trump's blanket tariffs against U.S. trading partners.

Nonfarm payrolls increased a seasonally adjusted 177,000 for the month, slightly below the downwardly revised 185,000 in March but above the Dow Jones estimate for 133,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. [Bolding mine]

Do you want direct evidence of the media's hatred of President Trump and their manipulation of their reporting to demonize him?

There it is!

The administration is not enacting "blanket tariffs." The news is filled with their constant offers to negotiate, their willingness to change tariffs based on actual data, and their obvious recognition that tariffs are both an economic and geopolitical tool.

"Blanket tariffs" is simply wrong, and an obvious attempt to reduce the efforts of the administration to simplistic, jingoistic, and rigid.

And there is more! Think back to the years of Glorious Leader Biden...how often did the media cite downward revisions in data? I can't recall a single report! They simply glossed over the constant revisions, because they were in the bag for the administration.

Every time the media vomits up this sort of manipulative nonsense, remind yourself that it is bought and paid for by the Democrat/Progressive apparatus. The media are whores, and cheap ones at that.

I remember the media's caterwauling about Biden refusing to lower any of the tariffs that Trump put on China but also when he raised even more tariffs on China.

Wait...no, I don't remember that.

I've actually been thinking about this a bit, since some people argue we need government jobs to handle the supposedly coming problem of destroying all sorts of careers.

And...even if you wanted to go down this path you can't do it with government work. Why? *Most* government work now is designed to reduce the efficiency of private sector work

So you could in theory have the government just hire people to count clouds or dig holes (and then fill them in) but in practice the government always seems to assign its workers to making it so car makers can't make cars or oil drillers can't drill for oil.

The US is blessed with ample natural resources, including plenty of farm land.

We are one of the only countries on earth that could be truly self sufficient if we really wanted to. Yes, it would require some sacrifices -- coffee wouldn't be as cheap and plentiful, for example.

We'd probably have to move away from wasting so many resources on things like single use lithium ion batteries, etc.

But totally doable.

That's not true of pretty much anywhere else on the planet. We have a huge competitive advantage here. Which the rest of the world knows, and is part of the reason they justify fucking us over at every opportunity.

Smith was proposing a lot of things in his book which is more a series of anecdotes than a formal framework. His Theory of Moral Sentiments is key to understanding how Smith viewed the summation of individuals behaving in their own interest (the Invisible Hand) can harmoniously coexist in a flourishing society.

And such is true on the international stage. Nations should and do act in their own self interest regarding trade but enlightened self interest would indicate a nation as a whole CAN become wealthier via trade.

157 And they're too stupid to make their point anyway. You can see this in Buck's post before this one, too, about the EU and China.

Why is it bad for the EU but not for the US to have China dumping the fruits of its subsidized overproduction? There *is* an answer beyond "the NYT hates America." It isn't a *good* answer, but there is an argument for the position.

One could argue that China is geared to massive production in large part because of her integration with the American economy. With the new American trade policy, China has too much capacity and markets for their goods will depress, which means that remaining markets will get flooded with more cheaper goods as China tries to work out its unexpected surpluses.

Is that what the NYT is arguing? I dunno. Either way, their conclusion is wrong. But that *would* at least be a more defensible argument than the non-argument they made. But if that *was* the intent behind the article, it's irrelevant - they didn't articulate it. They couldn't if they wanted to do. They're not just malevolent, they're incompetent. All they can do is lie and lie poorly.

Ready?

He claims that many people are now moving out of Florida to the Northeast.

His "evidence" is two-fold: net migration to Florida is sharply down from its Covid peak, and there are now more houses for sale in Florida than in the Northeast, reversing the relationship of a few years ago.

Curiously, the Census Bureau continues to show Florida strongly growing in population, while the Northeast remains stagnant.

No, no, really! Across Florida, millions of people are thinking: "You know, life would be a lot better in Connecticut."

The Marxist cultural revolution of the '60s and '70s failed in America because they couldn't fully seize the means of PHYSICAL production.

They then retooled and "seized/pounced" upon Marcuse's strategy of taking over all the institutions -- beginning with the academy.

They (in the meantime) succeeded, having effectively seized the means of KNOWLEDGE, INFORMATION, and COMMUNICATIONS production. But that too is changing and they'll likely likewise eventually fail in that endeavor as well ...

If you wanted fewer deaths--US and Iraqi, simply removing Saddam and leaving would have been prudent. One of his generals would have ended up running the place most likely.

To 'fix' a nation, you have to kill about 30-40 percent of military age males and then occupy them for decades. And to prevent internal civil wars, you have to pick one faction to suppress the others as the rulers dependent on you to stay in power (the favorite Brit solution). US occupation of Germany and Japan were outliers because their nation states were one ethnicity with few internal squabbles.

Remaking nations is not really possible in this day and age of crumbling internal cohesion and a distaste for ruthless violent coercion. A Putin or Xi might pull it off but not the West anymore.

240 Why is the market going up? There has not been a single piece of good economic news in the the last few weeks, yet the market is up about 9% in 10 days.

because people and companies are buying things pre tariff ? That would explain relatively solid Q1 earnings. But market prices are forward looking, and virtually every company is telling investors that they’re going to rough period. Valuations should be going down not up.

yeah sure. added 177k jobs. And i supposed next they'll claim they saved 258 million fentanyl deaths. oh wait....... they already did that

Markets look forward to the next earnings report, not the next 4 years when the Economy tanks. They know it's coming, they are trying to get what they can before the big drop. Usually they miss it and lose a fortune.

Low stock prices encourage buying. People with $ to burn are buying up cheap opportunities. Rich get richer.

"Good news" can be "maybe things are just a little less horrible than we thought yesterday". The market often goes down a lot of bad news, then comes back up a bit when people realize the news was bad enough that the fed is more likely to lower interest rates

There's nothing inherently wrong with international trade. It can be a huge net positive.

The problem comes in when idiots who don't understand the way international trade works or worse are paid to ignore reality make the rules. International trade if done properly and with fair trade not free trade can significantly improve the lives of all Americans.

There were predictions of economic collapse when Trump imposed 15% tariffs on China in 2018.

363 Speaking of hating the media...

Apparently, the National Weather Service is in "tatters" (per CNN) due to Trump Cuts and is "crippled" in its ability to predict the weather. And just before hurricane season!!!

This new outrage got the full court press two weeks ago, but I just now heard about it. It's the fire and police service "blackmail" writ large when it comes to cutting federal workers. It just can't be done. Society will collapse.

366 The intellectuals left early on as they could see that disaster was looming. And so you got some into the US via the various country allotments for immigrants, not specifically because they were Jewish.

Posted by: Boomer Warcocks Everywhere at May 02, 2025 01:21 PM (McYvC)

As a general proposition, I don't disagree with the idea of a draft...as in 3 years or so of service in the military at some capacity. A small amount of payback for living in the USA isn't too much to ask.

Buuuuuuut, it would have to be fair and affect everyone.

And, it couldn't be used as some socialist pedo trannie grooming training ground as it obviously would've been under Biden and Oblabla.

Which means that it will never happen and probably absolutely shouldn't.

376 How many nations in the ME aren’t failures (setting aside Israel as an exceptional case)? The root problem in all ME states is Mohammedanism. Read Churchill for a well stated case why all such polities are so backwards and failing. Careful: you may have to dig to get Churchill’s real thoughts. Lots of online sources are bowdlerizing him or just omitted his early writings about the ME.

377 I'd actually be happy with a revision downward because calculations on fed spending were off, or something.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Actual spending cut was something like 54 billion from predictions in Q1. Basically a rounding error. But, anticipated cuts in Q2 and Q3 are expected to be greater.

Tariff income in March set records but was only about 16 billion or so because the actual tariffs did not kick in until after April 5 for most countries. The main driver in tariff revenues so far was a huge flood of imports trying to beat the higher ones. Depending on calculations and assumptions, projected tariff revenue runs from 120 billion per year to maybe as much as double that but estimates are changing by the day depending on bilateral trade negotiations with specific partners.

Aircraft are a perfect example, China cancelled some Boeing aircraft already built and India snapped them up probably because their domestic aviation industry could not build such a thing yet anyway.

There is an upper strata in such countries like Turkey and Iran under the Shah that were modern. Their problem is those outside of places like Teheran, Constantinople, etc. were both resentful and mired in Islamic fundamentalism from the imams and mullahs that saw themselves sidelined in a secular world. Islam has never had separation of mosque and state and as currently constituted simply cannot do so. So any reformers are fighting uphill battles on society if they try to separate them.

Attaturk succeeded for a time but the old bugaboo of the ME of corruption ended up producting a new caliph in all but name, Erdogan.

Some similar problems in Iran brought down the Shah.

Posted by: NR Pax at May 02, 2025 12:24 PM (lXCUP)

I draw the line between journalist and reporters. Reporters can find out facts and spread the truth. Journalists discover nothing and spread lies. There aren't many reporters around.

Back in the day it used to be a blue collar job, journalists are white collar...probably not coincidentally.

382 The free trade dogma is based on an Adam Smith world where England imports cotton because it cannot grow it and exports textiles because it has textile factories. That scheme does not apply in a situation where jobs are offshored to a hostile foreign power that uses slave labor, currency manipulation, and zero environmental protection.

Remember when the free traders told us giving China most favored nation status would make them more democratic? LOL.
Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at May 02, 2025 12:29 PM (DIweC)

If we had free trade there would be not even the concept of most favored nation status, since every country would get the same terms by definition.

387 Remaking nations is not really possible in this day and age of crumbling internal cohesion and a distaste for ruthless violent coercion. A Putin or Xi might pull it off but not the West anymore.
Posted by: whig at May 02, 2025 12:59 PM (ctrM5)

I disagree to this extent, that the US Armed Forces are not usable for remaking/fixing nations, its not their job description or doctrine.

Rome had means that were pretty effective for a thousand years and more. But it was more social and indoctrination. Unless you revolted then the Army taught you a lesson not to do that. Much of it was incorporating large parts of the ruling class into the system with time.
