Hrm. Interesting question. I'm taking magnesium oxide pills as suggested by my pharmacist as a way to prevent leg cramps. (I'd been leaning towards potassium, ie what's in bananas, but he said this is a better option.) It seems to be working well, so ... ? Next time I talk to him, I'll ask him about the interaction with the acid in the stomach and why that doesn't react/cancel out the magnesium oxide. @55/CrochetyOldJarhead: Thank you. I may be needing to look into something like this in the upcoming years.
Because whoever thought 6 to 8 thousand dollars for hearing aids was a fair price needs to be nut-kicked. When I was a wee child, I remember my great grandparents carrying around what looked to be a little transistor radio (was a battery powered amplifier with microphones) in a front breast pocket, with wires going up to ear pieces they'd insert in their ears. These were the hearing aids of the day, and they weren't prohibitively expensive. I do remember moments where they'd wince and have to turn the thing quickly down due to high pitched feedback though. I don't have any experience with them, but I know that "hearing assistance" devices for hunters exist that amplify ambient noises. They're probably not tunable or bleeding-edge (and are likely just a generation or two old hearing aid technology) but they might be something worth looking into.

Evening and morning, all. Is it really Thor's Day? Are we having fun yet?
Just woke from a dream where I was siting in a downtown office building lobby with several people, including Sean Hannity (?!!). It was raining and we were waiting (no idea why) for the 5 o'clock crowd to come down in the elevators. Sean and I were commenting on the other people sitting around the lobby. "That red-haired guy with the white patch in his hair? He looks like a really clean collie." Yesterday was a fun day. We visited a local food bank (unfortunately, I make too much money to qualify for food help) and thrift store. Miss Linda found a pair of slacks for $1.00; I found a mechanical kitchen timer, the same model that sells on Amazon for $10, for $5. It works well, so far.
In the evening we saw the 1956 movie There's Always Tomorrow on a big screen at the local library. Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck in a tale about a successful middle-aged businessman, feeling unappreciated by his family, who falls in love with a woman who once worked for him and is now a big-time clothing designer. They keep avoiding the difficult decisions to save their butts for the next election that’s coming down the pike, Why make a budget when you can do CRs? Why declare war when the president can do it so much more easily? Why do anything when you can blame everything that goes wrong on the opposite party, the judiciary and the president? Congress turned itself into the Coward Branch decades ago, so the executive and judiciary filled the gaps. They don’t want powers back because then they’d have to make more decisions and take more blame. Posted by: SpeakingOf at May 01, 2025 06:35 AM (6ydKt) 86

I was delighted yesterday to find on YouTube a recording of Mendelssohn's concert overture The Fair Melusine with the Chamber Orchestra of the Saar conducted by Karl Ristenpart. Another example of what I call the "first heard phenomenon," where the first interpretation of a piece is the one that sticks with you, even though there might be other, superior ones better recorded. Only rarely are these others able to displace the first as a favorite. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 01, 2025 06:50 AM (QnmlO) 110

- This, like blood, has been the most amazing thing to watch in the switch from Heritage America to post 2000 Modern America. I get the spirit behind it, but that free unit of blood makes the hospital $1000+ off of something that was given to them for free. There is no discount for you donating. Pay up. Setting aside the motivations to change treatment based on organ donation needs, the kidney or eye or whatever is a billable item, right? Does the departed's family get anything other than a Heritage America feeling of wholesome goodwill as the corporation pockets $50K+ or whatever? I'm not surprised John had a cogent response. He really thinks things through. "I may want to give him a few ideas for incorporation into the third novel. Would that be a good idea?" No, absolutely not, and here's why: Once an author has read your suggestion, they can't use it because it's yours, and opens them to copyright claims as well as accusations of plagiarism and idea stealing. Several authors have made posts along these lines, because it's not something eager fans/readers tend to realize, so it needs to be pointed out. If Google thought they were genuinely in danger of projects grinding to a halt for lack of electricians, they'd cough up a billion to take over or start their own school and give the education for free in exchange for a contracted period of working solely on Google or Google partner facilities, with the option to short term freelance during periods when Google has no need of them.
