Ravens are larger than crows, with wedge-shaped tails and deeper croaking sounds, while crows have fan-shaped tails and make a cawing noise. Additionally, ravens are more solitary, often seen in pairs, whereas crows are more social and gather in larger groups.

The term eat crow is uniquely American in origin. Its first known use dates back to the 19th century when eating a crow required intense boiling to make it palatable. But, even then, it was like eating garbage because they’re carrion-eating birds, so their meat is disgusting.
But there are tons of theories and stories about how this saying came to be. Some claim it came about during the early 19th century with hunting parties. They’d make bets on who’d get the most kills, and the loser had to shoot and eat a crow. There’s also a running joke from the 1800s where a man said he could literally eat anything, and to settle a bet, he agreed to eat crow meat. He had a hard time swallowing his words as well as the meat but suffered through it just to prove his point. Posted by: rhennigantx at May 01, 2025 09:35 AM (gbOdA) 21

This is one of those ones where the more you look, the less you're impressed. Feels wooden and as if rendered from a concept the artist had in mind rather than actual still life. He's got the palette down and the general shapes, but the more you look, the stiffer the subjects get -- like they've been rendered from individual scenes and then composited. There's no detail in the open peach, the draping on that leading edge of the table clings too much to the surface and looks fake, the shape of the peach serving platter is weirdly oblong...

The Drama Dept. at my former school used a lifelike looking stuffed crow in a play, then tossed it in dumpster when done. I took him out and tied him to the shrubberies near the dumpster. Next time I walked by, 5 or 6 real crows were in the trees vocalizing their dismay at the interloper.

Well...yesterday was...fun.
Dolley got it in her craw that we all need to get Global Entry in preparation for our Italy trip. She's had it for about a year. Now, it's time for me an the boys. I've done the online portion. The Charlotte airport has a Global Entry office for the interview (essentially just verifying your identity to a DHS officer, including fingerprinting), so I set out the second Junior got back from school to hit our appointments, three in a row, 10 minutes each, starting at 3:40. Get in the car, GPS says we should get there at 3:42, ten minutes longer than expected. Well, crap. Oh well, gotta try to shave off minutes. Holy shit...this is the first time I've dealt with Charlotte rush hour traffic since I've moved here. It...sucks...It's Atlanta bad. 3:42 climbed up to 3:45 for no reason. I had to take a backroad just to get to the Interstate. Suddenly, 3:45 is climbing up to 3:50. I see a lot of red ahead of my on the route. It's getting worse. Ask for alternate routes. Get off half a mile later to shave off 8 minutes. Instant savings. Instant regret. I'm not the only one with the idea. 8 minute savings becomes 8 minute delay. Finally get to the airport parking deck. I've prepaid. This should be easy. I've followed the right signs.
System says I'm at the wrong parking lot. Shit. I don't have time for this. Pay for parking right there. Eventually find a spot. Pick up Second Junior and carry him so we can go faster. Go down a set of stairs only to realize...I had to go up to get to the bridge. I've memorized where the global entry office should be...but will it be good enough? Directions can suck. Well, that's when it finally began to work in my favor because the directions were spot on. And, surprise of all surprises, the DHS officer was cool with us showing up late, pronounced our last name correctly on the first try, and just went through the whole thing for all three of us in 10 minutes. Then...all that was left was the 80 minute drive home?! The latest freakout is unemployment claims were 241k last week. See, we’re in a recession man!!! Oh really? 241k was the exact number in the second week of October 2024.when I was assured by every economist that the economy had never been better.
Every fucking thing the media says is a lie. You don’t hate them enough and never will. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald -- Here's the thing. The 241k number the left is freaking out over is a 1 week data point t. It’s the number of people who filed for UE benefits. It’s jumped a little from last week. But the week to week number bounced around all the time. The more valid number is a 4 week moving average which has consistently been in the 220k range for the last few months. And that number is a historically low number. Even 250k would be considered a healthy number. It’s when you start getting close to 300k that it gets into “oh shit” territory. You pick out what you want on the website and pay for it. They pull your items and put them in a locker just inside the store entrance. When you get there, you scan the bar code from their email on your phone. The correct locker pops open automatically, you grab your shizzle and walk right out the door. Nifty. Obviously this isn't going to work if you're buying two-bys or sheets of plywood or something, but it's a serious time saver if you have several smaller purchases. This is unemployment claims. The number of people laid off. Doesn’t really apply to what you said. That’s a different discussion and relevant as well to the broader economy.

Even in the best economy there wil be people unemployed. There are always be entrants into the labor market as kids turn into adults or graduate from college or what have you. And I digital companies always fail, irrespective of the overall economy. Their products become obsolete or they just make shit. So people from those companies will be laid off.

The real metric of healthy workforce is labor participation rate. That’s the percent of working age adults either working or looking for work. When that number falls it means there’s no work and people have just given up. When it goes up it’s the reverse it means people are feeling good about the prospect of getting a job and are looking for work.

Found a big black snake had come to visit and had wound itself around the porch rail. Hubbymayhem does NOT like snakes. I just saw it, said, well then, who might you be? Snake didn't answer but looked at me while I took his picture which was nice. Girl came out and saw the snake. Says wow! And stood six inches from it playing stare eyes with a snake. Now the girl was good at stare eyes but snake was a champion! Hubbymayhem came out and managed to not freak out about his child being six inches from a huge snake but kept his distance. He muttered at me what the fuck are we gonna do about this. Girl lost stare eyes contest, I pulled snake off railing and carried him to the shed and encouraged him to go under there. Gave him the "if you're going to stay, you're going to work on mouse population control". He seemed unimpressed. My cousin said empty all chambers and burn the shed. Hubbymayhem agreed.

There was a tame crow that often followed me as I walked to and from school, hoping for some potato sticks. I was scared to death of that bird.

They are scary smart and they like the company of humans. My cats don't like them. They stay under the porch or furniture when the crows are around.
Posted by: Pudinhead at May 01, 2025 10:50 AM (pZ64F) An old timer told me they used to shoot them with .25-250's because they were smart enough to not get close to the people. They didn't get away far enough according to that caliber I guess. Posted by: haffhowershower at May 01, 2025 10:56 AM (144I4) 284

I'm curious to know what Henry McFee's inspiration for this painting was. Seems unlikely he'd think, hey, how about a crow on top of a bread loaf(?) gawking at some peaches while inside someone's house. I must be bad at nuance.
