Charles Sheeler (July 16, 1883 – May 7, 1965) was an American artist known for his Precisionist paintings, commercial photography, and the 1921 avant-garde film, Manhatta, which he made in collaboration with Paul Strand. Sheeler is recognized as one of the early adopters of modernism in American art.

https://tinyurl.com/4yk3e36c I can't imagine anyone who voted for what he campaigned on wants him to keep film production in the US with tariffs on films produced in foreign countries. I like the use of color in his still life paintings but not the style. This one looks dry and doesn't reflect the vibrancy of fresh flowers. And I'm not a fan of the simplified, harsh lines in a lot of modern (post-WW I) art. It's a matter of taste, of course, but I think the paper or cloth surrounding the flowers should look softer, more graceful otherwise it's a distraction.
I wonder if this would look better viewed from a distance where the inexact flowers would be reduced to spots of color. Something more abstract and less just inexact. Posted by: JTB at May 05, 2025 09:57 AM (yTvNw) 96

In 1920, Sheeler invited photographer Paul Strand to collaborate on a "portrait" of Manhattan in film. The resulting 35mm nine-minute series of vignettes, called Manhatta after Walt Whitman's poem, Mannahatta, was the first avant-garde film created in America. (wikipedia)

What the Hell Is Going on in Iran This Time? Bandar Abbas “handles approximately 85–90% of Iran’s container traffic and over half of its total trade volume,” and the damage is estimated at around $3 billion — with additional, unquantified but presumably significant losses to Iran’s trade. Seventy people were reported killed and more than 1,200 injured in the big badda boom. https://is.gd/ueDwCu https://is.gd/4gwMzS Posted by: Archimedes at May 05, 2025 10:19 AM (s8j++) 149

I know I am late the thread (post 100), but I still want to comment on the painting: the colors looked dark in the original image. When I looked at the enlargement it seemed a little brighter. I always worry about brightness in computer reproductions of paintings. The flowers depicted are naturally rather dark, and provide a strong contrast with the mild blues and greens of the vase, paper, table, and walls. It’s an interesting color composition. Yes, the vase is not symmetric. I don’t think the potter’s hand slipped: I think the artist didn’t care about that aspect of realism. It doesn’t bother me, since I have that understanding. The longer I look at it the more I like it! If you disagree, well, chacun à son gout. It pleases me.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 05, 2025 10:42 AM (VofaG) My grandfather had a story about one of the Pacific Islands he was on during WWII. This was one of the ones where the women normally went topless. Locals were hired to perform various chores around the base, and a busybody Puritan officer decreed that the women had to wear shirts, so they gave them Army t-shirts. This was not a popular decision with most of the soldiers. On the other hand, the women were delighted with their new finery, but found the shirts a bit...confining. There was a small crowd hovering around the dead body when Officer Riley showed up on the scene. He did his due diligence and got people to step back and started investigating. He pulled out his notebook and pen and started asking questions.
"Did anybody see what happened?" No response. "Well, does, anybody recognize this man?" "I think he is just a drifter passing through town," came a reply. "Okay, then, let's start with the basics; the body of a middle aged male was found on...uh, what street is this?" "Chrysanthemum Avenue." "What, how do you spell that?" asked Officer Riley. "C-R-I-S" "No, it's K-R-Y-S-T" "Uh-uh, you spell it C-H-R-I" "That's not right, either-" "Hold on a second," Officer Riley said again. Cellophane was invented by a Swiss-born chemist, Jacques Brandenburger, and he had invented a machine to manufacture it in Paris by 1912, so the wrapping could _potentially_ have been cellophane. By 1917, Brandenburger, sold all his rights, processes, and patents to the French La Cellophane Cie. But it wasn’t until 1923, when La Cellophane sold the rights to manufacture cellophane to the DuPont Co. (in North and Central America) that cellophane really took off in the USA. So the wrapping is probably just plain white butcher’s block paper as you might find in a florist shop today for a plain wrapping of a take-away bouquet. The reason it appears all those colors is reflection of the colors on the walls, table, even the flowers. My maternal grandmother who was in her lifetime a regional artist of some repute in West Texas (sadly forgotten now except for collectors) once said to me that you could study what was in and around a room by just looking at the bare white ceiling. If you _really_ looked you would see all these subtle shades and colors even on a bare white ceiling. People are missing the artistry thinking the wrapper is some sort of colored cellophane. It’s butcher block.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 05, 2025 11:04 AM (0sNs1) My corpse was on a corner in Winslow, Arizona Such a fine sight to see. It's a condor, my Lord. I'm stiff as a board He's flying by to have a look at me. Posted by: Zombie Glen Frey at May 05, 2025 11:07 AM (W5ArC) 302
I had an owl swoop me on a full moon. It was Michigan in the snow and its shadow crossed me before the owl did. It would make a remarkable scene in a movie. Spooky and all.

Years ago, we had an aggressive owl living in one of the local parks that was known for attacking hikers and grabbing their headwear, leading to a local cartoonist's observation that all animals have their ways of dealing with winter. Bears hibernate. Ducks fly south. Owls mug hikers and steal their cold-weather gear.

I like the painting except the flowers. 😂 They look dark and drab and dead, like dried flowers. White daisies or something would have looked better. Posted by: BonnieBlue at May 05, 2025 01:59 PM (h3Z1E) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0556 seconds. |
