Evening and morning to all you late toilers and insomaniacals! 'Tis Woden's Day (right?), the last day of April, and here I am up an hour before I planned to be. A nasty 74 F. here now, high humidity but little wind, so my workout may not be too bad.

Got a blood pressure cuff and a smart watch yesterday so I can track my pulse rate, BP, do a periodic EKG and plot my glucose just to reassure myself the doc was right about heart disease. We flea-bombed my place yesterday, and dabbed the Pet Armor flea treatment on the furry thugs when they got back home. I know I said the PA stuff was "useless," but it did reduce the infestation on them to a degree. Now that the place is cleaned out, well, it may work until I can try the Wondercide stuff Notsothoreau recommended.
Little Dagny took the relocation to Linda's quite well, L. said, even sitting with her on the couch for a while. Stirling was fine until it was time to come back; he meowed piteously as L. lugged him back here. No idea what he had to object to. He got his usual dinner and petting once he got home, as did Dagny. He hates the topical treatment, though. I went back to college in my 40's to finish a degree. Other than the STEM classes, it was the worst, most wasteful expenditure I ever made. Classes were filled with kids that had no idea how to write (the wrote like they spoke) or any knowledge of history beyond their time in school. I had a world lit class where the professor actually read the assignments to us in class. Almost every student I interfaced with was going to school on fed student and and grants. Carbon sequestration is potentially a $250 billion market - says the article - but what do you do when the forest you are paying for you carbon credits... Burns down? - I'm not joking when I ask: How do the systems account for things like this? I mean, I know they don't, but as a hypothetical. "Okay, so we're going to save the world by saving energy and carbon and stuff, but we've got to account for ALL of everything involved, from the energy and water involved in the production of the fertilizer to the transportation of the fertilizer to the site to the spreading of the fertilizer and the energy and carbon involved in the production of the machinery required to spread the fertilizer... Well, you get it. And that's just for the day or two of spreading fertilizer. Okay guys, let's save the world!" Could you imagine anyone taking these people seriously? Also I bet we discover a lot of USAID money involved in this stuff very soon. Posted by: Boron Cobbie - Ladies, you weren't liberated, you were industrialized. It’s about political advertising. So Democrats can’t run a campaign that, for example, has an AI-generated Trump saying he hates black people or a video of him groping his daughter. Libs have produced similar faked content without any disclaimers. Defamation isn’t protected under the First Amendment anyway, and political shenanigans with altered media can greatly influence elections especially when they’re presented as the truth. All the bill does is make it so that if the anyone does such things in a paid ad, they’ll have to disclose it. Not everything in the Android app store is awful. I use Plexamp to stream my reasonably extensive high resolution music library from my Synology NAS to my phone. The useful part of all this is my car uses Android Auto and Plexamp shows up as any other app. The sound quality is wildly better than what Spotify is pumping out. The feature I like the best is Plex amp allows you to shuffle the entire library; effectively I'm hurting my own streaming music service. Sweet!

Pixy, I hope the Aussie electorate is smarter than the Canadian.
- I'm starting to accept that what we saw, and are trying to fix, here is occurring worldwide, same as the timed and coordinated invasion of nations by illegals/immigrants and the COVID response. It's the "Our Democracy" the (D)s kept referring to during the campaign. JJ had an article about it a few days ago. It means the unelected and behind the scenes ("deep state" if you will) permanent residents and judiciary that makes sure that elections don't matter and the will of the government can carry on regardless of annoyances like new presidents. We know the globalists coordinated the invasions and COVID, and work together in the form of the WEF and CFR to share ideas and promote their interests. There is no real reason to believe there are any legitimate elections in any 1st world nation any longer. Posted by: Boron Cobbie - Ladies, you weren't liberated, you were industrialized. Her Majesty returned from her two-week trip yesterday afternoon, bringing back Diana and her sister Rosalind from out in California (who remembered me instantly), plus a mountain of dog laundry which I'm patiently running through the washing machine dedicated for that. For a long time now, we've been treating Diana with kid gloves: no zoomies, no jumping up onto the bed or grooming table, exercise in a restricted area, etc. This is because of the injury she suffered when young. HM has taken advice and decided to let her be a dog at last. It was nice to see her and Ros charging around the property when they got home. Posted by: JM in Illinois In a rare moment of not being evil, Google Pixel phones, beginning with the 8 series, get 7 years of updates including the new Pixel 9a which retails for $500. Unlike most other Android phone vendors, these updates roll out pretty much every month like clockwork. Pixel phones, unlike most other manufacturers, doesn't add an additional skin over the top of the OS. I find this to be one of its nicest features. Plus the camera system is excellent. In my case, I have booted most Google apps off the phone and I substitute it in a different launcher because I don't really care for their UI. There's a new entrance ramp that, when open, will make it much more convenient for us to go north. It's all finished. But not open. So we have to go north on the frontage road for two or three miles through four or five stop signs to find an entrance ramp. There's absolutely no reason why they can't open it. There's been no reason why they couldn't open it for the last two weeks. All they have to do is move some barrels and a flimsy sign blocking the ramp. But it wouldn't surprise me if they dumped a 50-foot pile of concrete there. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 30, 2025 06:35 AM (QnmlO) 94

I had an LG for my second smartphone after I got overwhelmingly frustrated with the braindead partitioning of the storage in the Samsung Galaxy S2 that was the phone after my Blackberry. This was before Android knew how to treat a microSD card as 'adoptable storage', meaning anything including apps could live entirely there. For an inexplicable reason, Samsung partitioned the internal storage so that only a fraction of it could be used for app installs. This severely limited how many apps you could install and still perform updates. Attempting to change this could easily brick the phone.
The LG was low priced, had more RAM, and far saner storage defaults. Everything about it was an upgrade. It once fell out of my pocket as I was getting out of my car at a supermarket late at night. It was gone when I went back to search for it. The person who found it answered when I called, as she hoped I would, so I could retrieve it. Somebody, possibly me, had driven over it, leaving a tire tread pattern on the screen. Peeled off the protector and applied a new one to continue using it for a few more years. Yes, this experiment has stirred quite the debate! Researchers from the University of Zurich secretly deployed AI bots on Reddit's r/ChangeMyView subreddit to test their ability to persuade users in arguments. These bots, posing as fabricated personas like trauma survivors and political activists, engaged in over 1,700 debates between November 2024 and March 2025. Cuz flagship phones have longer service support in terms of firmware, OS and OS security version upgrades and patches. I run an S21, and find replacing the battery cheaper than buying new hardware. As to what you read in terms of SF: You might also enjoy his Wolfhounds series (Starts with "Stand Alone") and maybe also his early-career "Children of Steel" series (author's suggested reading order is "Children of Steel", "Danger Money", "Dialene", "Lead, Follow, or Suffer the Consequences" and finally "Interregnum"). One thing I've found consistent, nomatter the universe or the genre he's writing in, he writes big conflict/war in a way that I find very satisfying. Okay, my hour reprieve is almost over. Time to saddle up. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at April 30, 2025 07:50 AM (O7YUW) 166

First time I really paid attention to David Horowitz it was one of his essays reprinted in one of Jerry Pournelle's anthologies in the early or mid-80s. Not long after that, the book he wrote with Peter Collier, DESTRUCTIVE GENERATION, which pushed me away from being a good little leftie.
