21 *sings*

Dreamed I was an eskimo
Frozen wind began to blow
Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below

It was a hundred degrees below zero...
And my mama cried
And my mama cried
Nanook, a-no-no
Nanook, a-no-no
Don't be a naughty eskimo

Save your money, don't go to the show
Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said ho, ho
And the northern lights commenced to glow

And she said, with a tear in her eye
Watch out where the huskies go,
and don't you eat that yellow snow
Watch out where the huskies go,
and don't you eat that yellow snow

42 Somehow the landscape looks like the leather garb they're wearing, and not in a good "are they one with the earth" kind of way; more like a "artist got lazy" kind of way.

From a historical/anthropological standpoint, I guess it has some merit, though more details on the clothing and tools could have been more interesting.

60 I would think getting your paintings hung in a significant museum would be every artists fantasy .

I am not a fan of Dr Who but I've watched the clip of the episode where they brought Van Gogh to the future and showed him how his art is now accepted. It was a pretty emotional scene.

Also I've noted though that arguably the two most well known or popular artists of our time have been snubbed by the art world /museums.

92 I like the actual landscape and even the tent. It has an other worldly feel, something most viewers would not know about. I do wish the figures' faces were more distinct not just smudges. It would add a human element to the place and work needed to survive. But I do like the sense of a successful family working to make a life in harsh conditions. It's a positive feeling that comes through after noticing the details of the place and activity.

Interesting combination of reality and emotional connection for the audience.

207 US Economy Shrinks in Q1 of 2025, Trump Recession on the way. -0.3 %.

Good! The sooner Trump and the MAGA base self-implode the better.

I care about the economy in terms of regular people, and a shrinking economy hurts regular people because we're about to see unemployment rise and wages start to fall. The GOP's ideas are to end the middle class and replace them with the working poor entirely. So if some pain now can put a stop to that plan, it's worth it.

There will be pressure on employers to raise wages and salaries due to inflation and they want to retain them so they don’t jump ship at their first opportunities. Unions will also pressure their employers to increase wages. Just laying off unnecessary workers doesn’t mean that the rest will accept pay cuts.

I've lost so much (mostly pre-Trump bad investments) that we are having to downsize. To get rid of the fascist, I would be prepared to lose it all.

GOP is fully responsible. No matter that they will try to blame Hilary's emails, or some other wanky crock of crap

He has conditioned his voters to believe short term pain is necessary for long term gains.

276 you must have liked those double digit mortgage interest rates and energy shortages. Just put on a sweater.

Breaking stagflation was probably his greatest achievement. But every tune wasn't a hit. Turns out the Top 1% doesn't use that extra untaxed income to create jobs. They use it to amass social and political power for a myriad of personal causes. Most of which run contrary to my best personal interests. And yours.

348 Saw two movies at opposite ends of the spectrum this week. Both with whisper-thin plots.

1) "Hatari!" 1961 film with John Wayne and a bunch of low-level "stars" except maybe for Red Buttons.
Plot group of guys round up African animals for zoos, a French woman comes in and falls in love with John Wayne.
Pretty much 1961 state of the art family entertainment. something for everyone. Good, not great.
I saw it when a young kid and loved it. Mostly remembered the rhino ramming the truck and the fun "Baby Elephant Walk" sequences.
If you're a JW fan, check it out.

2) "Warfare"- new movie.
Bunch of American solders in Iraq get their asses kicked, regroup and barely make it out alive. Based on a true incident.
You will be locked onto the screen while it's playing but not really remember much about the movie in terms of characters, etc. Well-made, great action, good acting.
Vaguely, anti-American with the Americans taking over a family's home for no explained reason. Then kind of an Ewoks VS evil empire vibe as Americans use all this high tech equipment and still get their asses kicked and have to scurry away. Family scared that Americans may come back but okay now becuz...(con't)

358 248 1) "Hatari!" 1961 film with John Wayne and a bunch of low-level "stars" except maybe for Red Buttons.

=======

Hatari is one of about half a dozen movies made at the tail end of Howard Hawks' career that could pretty much just be described as "hang out movies". A handful of dudes and a lady hang out for 2 hours and occasionally deal with some plot stuff.

It's one of the better ones. The best is, of course, Rio Bravo.

Yasujiro Ozu, for instance.

381 A couple of Eskimo facts...

Not all Eskimos are "Inuit", despite what woke white people (especially Canadian woke white people) will try to tell you. The Yupik, for example, are not Inuit. Their language is in the same family, but it's not the same language.

Historically the two groups didn't get along. At all. The Canucks only have Inuit. Alaska has Inupiat (a type of Inuit), Yupik, and Aleut (a third related language group). Alaska also has a lot of Indians (or Native Americans, in PC speak... a stupid name, as the Eskimos are also indigenes). All of these groups hated each others guts. Where I live the local Eskimos were genocided by the local Indians before white people even showed up.

Insisting on calling a Yupik "Inuit" is like insisting on calling a Spaniard or Italian "French" (i.e., the languages are related, but that could well result in getting your ass kicked).

"Igloo" just means "house". It's the word for any type of dwelling. Snow houses were normally only built as temporary shelters while hunting or traveling. A more typical dwelling would be some type of dugout, or a tent made of animal skins and covered with turf.
