Left the house at 9:00 this morning and drove the better part of an hour to the vet clinic where poor Fitz was stored to pick up his body. I was careful to ask about how he was, so to speak, packaged. He was in a sturdy cadaver bag, for which I was grateful. It wasn't an easy time. I'd be talking normally and all of the sudden I'd stop, afraid I'd choke up.

Then an hour and a half up to College Station to deliver him to the Texas A&M Veterinary College for a necropsy as part of a study on sudden heart death in Borzoi. Everything had been prepared ahead of time and there were no hitches. All the paperwork was in order and all I had to do was drive to a garage in the back, where a technician unloaded the bag. Everyone was efficient and professional.

This was a tragedy. Sisters Dot and Delilah had 11 puppies in their combined litters and three of them have died suddenly from heart attacks. First Spark last near, then Fitz's sister Sally a month and a half ago, and now Fitz. We hope that something can be learned from all this that helps the breed and avoids heartbreak for others.

Different sires. The notable thing is that both dams were 8 when they had their litters, which is pretty old. So maybe something ordinarily quiescent that gets unleashed with age. There's been no previous occurrence in our lines. And we health test up the ying-yang before breeding anyone.
