doof-firesky.jpg

Sunset over central Colorado

Howdy Hordelings! Hope your Monday has been a good one. We made it through Day 1 without the boss. Give yourself a high-five, grab a beverage of your choosing, and settle on in to the ONT. Lurkers, please don't be shy - say hello! Regulars - eh, it doesn't matter what I say - you're gonna do what you do anyway.

Suuuuuuuuuurrrrrre - THAT'S How She Caught It

Woman Allegedly Catches Herpes Virus by Holding Karaoke Mic Too Close to Her Mouth

A woman from Zhejiang, China, claims that she caught the herpes virus by holding the microphone too close to her mouth at a karaoke lounge.

The unnamed woman took to Douyin (China’s version of TikTok) to share the story of how she became infected with the HSV-1 virus, which usually causes cold sores around the mouth, eight years ago. In 2017, she visited a karaoke lounge in Zhejiang and got a bit carried away during her performance, holding the microphone much closer to her mouth than she should have. Sometime later, tiny, pustulent blisters appeared around her mouth, but although they were painful and itchy, she didn’t pay too much attention to them, and they eventually went away. Only they came back in a matter of days, and this time, the woman sought medical attention and learned that she had somehow contracted the HSV-1 herpes virus.

***

The woman’s clip went viral on Chinese social media, but dermatologists have yet to confirm that her story holds up, and one can actually get infected with HSV-1 by touching a tainted microphone with one’s lips.

Fellas, I don't know about you but I rate this as HIGHLY sus (as the yutes would say).

Much Better Story

Man Gets Stuck in Lake Michigan Quicksand and Comes Out with New Girlfriend

doof-quicksand.jpg

Everyone in a relationship will know how love often works in mysterious ways, but quicksand isn’t typically involved, right?

Typically, no; but never? Also no. Just ask Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika, a new couple, for whom falling in love first meant falling in quicksand.

O’Brien, 37, and Sika, 36, were both single and interested in the other, but under impressions the feeling wasn’t reciprocal. This carried on until a mutual friend asked them why they didn’t go out on a date together?

***

“At one point, Bre points to a spot on the beach which was right next to the water, and she goes, ‘That looks really dangerous,'” O’Brien The Detroit News. “I didn’t realize she was referring to a singular spot; I thought she meant the whole area. I ended up turning around and walking straight to that spot to see if there were any stones in the water.”

Sinking immediately up to his waist, it was the second time O’Brien had been caught in quicksand in his life. He was fortunately able to remain calm enough to think of a plan.

After trying to dig the sand out from under his waist only for it to be replenished with every cold wave that splashed onto his back, Sika tried to help pull the man out. This also failed, and the two were left trying to call 911 with spotty cell service.

***

“At the end of me telling them what’s going on and where we are, I said ‘I think my girlfriend is calling as well,'” O’Brien said. “She’s like 20 feet away, and she was saying ‘My boyfriend is here, stuck in the sand.’ It was the first time we had called each other that.”

Read the whole thing. Very nice story!

28 The Net Zero blackout in Europe today got me thinking about the two big ones I was in in NYC.

Someone was wondering how long it would take for an urban hellhole to go Mad Max: well, in NY in 1977, it started as soon as the sun went down. Massive looting, arson, murders, in all the bad neighborhoods.

We did better in 2003, but there was a lot of tension in the air because the folk memories of the one in '77 were still strong. If that happened NOW?

Well, there are masses of illegal aliens, a Politboro City Council, no shoplifting laws enforced .... and the NIMBY New York asshats voted against putting a new power plant in the city, even though Con Ed is stretched to the limit, even with routine voltage reductions in peak load times (they've been doing that for decades, btw).

Prospects? apocalyptic.

We ordered some canned goods from Walmart a couple of weeks ago. We live in a very small town with a small grocery store and some things we can't get here.

Anyways, we have to drive an hour to Walmart and it is a pain in the ass.

The canned goods we ordered were packed in double sturdy cardboxes. Out of 36 cans only 2 were not dented so badly we had to throw them out.

We think they are shipping the rejects from their stock.

304 Trump should have a speech where he recognizes Canada wants to kill itself, and we won't save them, but we will offer a 2 for 1 trade, where we'll allow 2 Americans to renounce their citizenship free of charge and move to Canada (hell we should chip in for the Uhaul too) in exchange for 1 Canadian who wants to live in a free country.

I mean every liberal said they'd move to Canada if Trump was elected, here's their chance to save money doing so.

320 Great news - all of my tumors have shrunk by half! The plan for now is to continue on this chemotherapy medication until it stops working; no idea how long that might be. When that does happen, we will look at whether or not surgery can be done (right now it cannot, due to the fact that there are multiple tumors).

The surgeon did say that my response to this chemo has been "dramatic", and he is "cautiously optimistic" that surgery will be an option in the future.

The surgeon has had about 20-25 patients over the last 3-4 years who had the mutation which allowed them to take this medication in the first place. Apparently only 10% of people with this type of cancer have this mutation, and of that 10%, about 40% have a positive response to the medication.

So everything looks good for now! I will have another CT Scan in 3 months to monitor my progress. 😊❤️

323 Oh, and only 10% of people who have Bile Duct Cancer have the Intrahepatic type.

That means that I am one of the only 1% of people with this type of cancer who has this mutation. There are usually around 800-1000 people who test positive for this cancer in any given year, so I am one of only about 100 people who has this mutation in any given year, and one of only 40 who responds to this medication.

I guess I have threaded that needle for now – I’m gonna ride this as long as I can!

I don't need to know what people are doing, eating, etc. on an hourly basis.

Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at April 28, 2025 11:21 PM (ufFY8)

349 Don Black, not just that team - NHL power plays are generally hilariously incompetent. After dumping the puck (lol) and giving up control, IF they get it back inside the zone, then follows a passing exercise that eats up their advantage time. Almost always with the objective of getting a very low % high-angle shot (usually a one-timer, also a poor choice and less accurate).

I go to some AHL games (Ducks farm team) and I've now got the people sitting around us to join in counting passes before a shot on a PP. It generally averages around 6-7, minimum. Again - usually to get a low % shot. I seriously wonder about coaching now. My overall impression of pros now (at least top level minors) - incredibly powerful fast and BIG talented athletes producing adult recreational level hockey.

Why? The first Millennial to run for President will be Vance. Boomers were voting Democrats into office and burning their draft cards while listening to bad music and doing drugs long before I was born.

Boomers strip-mined the country and let our industrial base be sent to China and the let tens of millions of immigrants (legal and illegal) into the country to drive wages down. All before I could ever vote. I had to compete against illegals that Boomers let into the country for my first jobs in high school.

You turned the culture into dreck. All just gore and sex and drug abuse. You made abortion a “human right”, indulged in divorce to disturbing excess, and turned religion into a faggy acoustic guitar clapfest because the idea of a judgmental God offended your egotism.

365 Another fun one - count body checks that occur more than 3 feet from the boards. Usually no more than 1-2 per game. Recently an opposing player delivered a perfect shoulder-to-chest open ice check, dropping the local player (who's incredibly fast and exciting) - many fans *booed*. As if it were a dirty play - instead of possibly the best defensive play of the entire game.

Have a similar story from way back involving an NHL fan base, but recounting it would be invidious given the location and the team.

Hits along the boards are much, much easier (and more dangerous) than open ice hits. These kids have the skills, but it's a cultural change.

369 Katen Read trial update:

Mob lawyer prosecutor Hank Brennan questioned Canuck IT expert Ian Whiffin about Jen McCabe's "his long to die in cold" search four hours before John O'Keefes body was found. He claimed the timestamp was not the proper timestamp. After stretching out the insipid questioning, defense attorney nerd Alessi started his cross. He only got a few minutes if sweet, sweet grilling before Judge Bev sent the jury home for the day (half day scheduled).

The afternoon was spent in voir dire for the Crash Daddys, the ARCCA experts originally hired by the DOJ. Brennan really, REALLY wants to exclude them from testimony because they destroy his case. Hank was a complete, total screaming asshole to Dr. Wolfe, the Crash Daddy all the women want to be impregnated by. After Wolfe, Dr. Rentschler was briefly questioned.

Tomorrow morning cross of the Canuck continues. Alessi will eviscerate him, which should be wonderful. After that, the Totally Evil Jen McCabe will take the stand.

Check it out on Andrea Burkhart's channel tomorrow.

393 Struggles with figuring out the English language
-

I have posted this before. From a 1997 email I still have:

The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish": --

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c".. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go away.

By the 4th yer, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

396 My condolences AOP, Canada's had some hard years and it looks unlikely to improve now.

As a practical matter, is there actually any likelihood of AB "secession", either involving the US or not?

And as I said above, this is very bad for the US too, in several ways. Most seem unaware of serious mistakes Canada has made that directly affect the US. There are several, but 2 highlights are visa-waiver travel for Mexicans (= massive and new cartel penetration) and of course the massive importation of unassimilable and unscreened immigrants, many from jihadish climes.

This is what was behind Trump's almost immediate confrontation with Canada - that border is now a security issue for the US (major terrorist attack on NYC thwarted last year). It's possible the Liberals will play ball on serious border issues, of course. But seems unlikely (impossible?) to fix some of the damage done to Canada that also directly affects the US.

I assume Korea is explained by Japanese occupation (check out the shelves of an H Mart some time), Taiwan (do they play b-ball?) ditto.

Japanese baseball is great. Sure, cheers and cheerleaders are weird, but it's all worth it when the teams line up on the base lines at the end of the game and bow to the crowd. Also, the whole game - bunting, all the small-ball tactics that can make it such a rich game.

Not everyone who didn't have children feel like she does, I get that. I do think she should respect that we did the best we could for her.

448 So, just got back from the ER. Some people here were concerned. Thank you for all the prayers. All prayers are answered, just not necessarily how you want them. I have a Foley catheter and attached collection bag. Have emptied it twice since 11 PM, probably due the Flowmax I was given an hour before surgery. Yes, the Foley hurt a lot more than a temporary catheter. Still irritated at the site since this is the third catheterization today (once while passed out for surgery, second time while recovering.) Had to discharge to be discharged. I hope to have the Foley out before Friday, but better this than a ruptured bladder. Ultrasound said 295 ml, but they got about 600 ml. Then I emptied the leg bag before leaving the ER (pretty easy), then emptied it again when I got home (about a 30 minute drive). I was on OxyContin so not safe to drive. I think my deacon saved my life! Better a Foley than meeting my Lord before my time (though if I had died, it would have been my time). The flow has decreased, so I’m going to try sleeping in two hour shifts. Wearing bed shorts instead of pajamas. Thanks again for all your prayers. God bless you!

Apparently had decent spoken Japanese but never learned to write it, except romaji, I suppose because he had never gone to school in Japan. I think I spoke out of turn when I said to him that the Japanese have four different ways to write their language, which they use concurrently, to keep people OUT. He was very disappointed since I think he realized I was right. The syllabaries and romaji, at least for a Westerner, are not the problem. It’s the Kanji.

Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” was one of the first books I read because I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be able to read it, and the book had an extensive glossary at the back. Every book was hard to read at that time (third grade), but I was determined to read it. Helps that it isn’t a novel but a series of episodic adventures, only loosely related. And they were knights, bashing each other with glee and reckoning justice by their own chivalric code, or lack thereof. What better for a little boy! “Wuthering Heights,” my next book, again from my mother’s shelves, was a lot harder to read not only for the Yorkshire dialect in portions, but also because it’s a novel, and a long meandering one at that, with themes beyond a 10 year old’s understanding.

You could probably figure out who I am by all the clues left here, but I’m just a nobody, in the grand scheme of things. I count for no more than anyone else, at least. Bless you.

635 Never heard of him. Interesting sound. He didn't do many concerts or tours. Mostly studio.

636 >>>Anyway, why should I leave? My ancestors killed a lot of Indians so I could live here. Maybe you should leave? I’ll stay and continue working to destroy America from the inside.

637 Rest well, Nemo. I hope your recovery will be complete.

No, I don't know any other nic you may have had here, nor would I venture a guess.

Anonymity FTW!

Take care.

640 So not only did I get amazing news about my tumors today, but a little over half an hour ago I finished cross-stitching the 14th Christmas stocking that I have made in my lifetime! Not a bad body of work, if I do say do myself 😊❤️

Next I am starting on a one-of-a-kind stocking for our younger grandson, Niko. I am combining 2 different designs that I have in my pattern collection. I worked on putting the design together while we were on vacation a couple of weeks ago, piecing together elements of both patterns into one that I think is going to end up looking pretty sweet.

And when I am through with that one, there is at least 1 more pattern that I want to complete. If I have more time after that, I have a few more designs that I can stitch up. I will have to leave names off of those stockings, but I have already lined up a nice young lady who has said that she will fill in the names if I am not around to be able to do it myself.

Oh, for Fuck's Sake. You just enjoy arguing for the sake of arguing, don't you? You can't ever be satisfied.

Let me tell you something - it is your choice how you live your life. You can be happy, or you can spend all of your time pitching.

Six months ago I was given a death sentence. No ifs, ands, or buts about it - if I am lucky, I might have 2 or 3 years left. I may not be happy about what is going on in the world right now, but I can only "control" my little corner of it. That is all that any of us can do.

So you choose - are you going to make the most of every day that you have left on this earth, or are you going to bitch about things that you never had control of in the first place?

Nobody wants to hear you whine, so pull up your big boy pants, and get on with the business of making your own happiness - you aren't a child any more. Start acting like an adult, or shut up.

648 Teresa, good news about the cancer and the cross-stitch! Really your problems are much bigger than mine, but you handle them with such grace. I’ll be keeping you in my prayers.

Late wife used to do a lot of cross-stitch: entered them in the county fair and often won first prize! The house is filled with her handiwork, a giant tiger easily over 2’ x 2.5’ (really a kind of rug thing made for a wall hanging), lovely horses, a beautiful piece she dedicated to me that spoke about the search for beauty in the universe that we had framed, and so forth. I appreciate them more now than ever.

The Grateful Dead did a very nice cover of that song, with Pigpen McKernan on lead vocal. It is straight-up country music.

And I am off to the snoozer. Night, Horde.

653 530 …Apparently there is a gender distinction in Japanese_

Missed this at the time, but a proper Japanese woman speaks in keigo, formal speech. She is speaking deferentially to those of higher status: such as men in most of Japanese society. She may not really mean any deference, but she will give lip service to it, unless you are the scum of the earth. Then she would “rough” language, the way men typically speak to women. Their are gradations: polite speech versus honorific speech, etc. Even a high ranking man would use honorific speech to say, the Emperor. You also speak with deference to your commanding officer in the JSDF. It’s not just gender.
