Gun Thread: Pre-May Edition!

042725 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be almost May? Know what comes after May? June! Know what happens in June, specifically June 21st, 2025? The 2025 NoVAMoMe! Scroll down for details.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of sight alignment and "red" (or green, or blue, or teal, or magenta, or orange, or seafoam) dot optics, that is.

Last Sunday, our pal Mike Hammer asked about this very thing, so let's take a look.

I would really like, some Gun Thread (not tonight), to get some thoughts on red dots. It is completely outside of my experience, so thoughts and recommendations would be interesting, across the board pistol, shotty, and AR.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 20, 2025 09:28 PM

We have discussed sight alignment as a fundamental, but what is sight alignment and what exactly are you aligning? Pretty much all firearms have some sort of system to help aim and every once in a while actually hit, a target. The most common being a notch or aperture rear sight and front post. Line the two up and if the sights are properly zeroed for ammunition and range (distance), the bullet goes where the sights are pointing. That may not be where the shooter hopes it will go, which is why we practice fundamentals, but I digress.

Anyhoo, all that alignment business is hard, especially when you get old and your eyesight goes to hell, so people started looking for alternatives to the sort of setup described above.

Illuminated aiming reticles were developed for aircraft guns during WWII with a little piece of light being placed inside the sight.

Here are some more in-depth examples:

and,

Sure, you might already have them on your P-51, but why not put these nifty little fellers on a personal weapon too? Wouldn't it take out all the cumbersome aligning and thinking business of target acquisition described above?

Personally I don't like using them. First, virtually all of them have batteries which can go kaput, where good ol' reliable iron sights do not. More importantly, I find them to be distracting as a mo-fo to use. Why you ask? Well it's virtually impossible to hold a handgun (for example) at arms length without some muscle-induced wobbly motion, and having a dot out there dancing around is, well, distracting. I think that very issue creates a situation where shooters follow the bouncing dot around until it happens to cross their desired point of impact, then "jump" on the trigger introducing a huge flinch-like motion which really messes things up.

However there is no denying their popularity, and if properly installed and functioning, I'd say it simply boils down to a matter of personal preference. What do all y'all think? Only handguns or long guns too? Let us know in the comments!

Surviving a Traffic Stop Whilst Carrying

But wait! There's more! Last week we talked a bit about traveling by car with a weapon, so this week let's talk about it some more.

***

From the May 12, 2024 Gun Thread

If you are regularly carrying your gun, and you should be, you ought to have a plan in mind in the event you're stopped by the police.

The one time I had a police interaction with a gun in the car was when I was stopped on the side of the road with a flat tire. Although not required to do so in Virginia , I had my license and concealed carry permit in my hand as the State Trooper approached and I was quickly reviewing in my head the little statement I was going to give about having a weapon in the vehicle. As he came to my window I said hello and offered the two cards. The trooper said simply "I don't need to see those" and that was it. Truth be told, I was a little dejected. I wanted to finally give my little statement.

WeaselDoctrine teaches us when having contact with the police, or really anyone for that matter, but especially the police; don't be an asshole.

I knew that he probably knew I was a permit holder if he looked up my tag as he pulled up, and I wanted to do what I could to put him at ease because I had precisely nothing to gain by making his job any harder than it needed to be. It turns out the trooper was very cool and we chatted about guns and shooting as the flat tire was sorted out.

Gun Lawyer Gal makes an excellent point in the video, and that is the side of the road is not the place to argue about your rights or anything else for that matter. Save it for court if necessary.

What do all y'all think? Do you have a plan? For those not required to inform police you're carrying, do you plan to do so anyway? If not, why not?

2025 NoVAMoMe

042725 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to attend the event. Are you attending? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of attending on JUNE 21st, 2025?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated details of the 2025 NoVAMoMe are here! That's right, I finally got my act together and updated the information page for 2025, and need to go over a few details. My bestest blog buddy bluebell and I have decided 2025 will be a year of NoVAMoMe simplification, and want to pass along the changes from prior years.

First, no more registration and advance charge for food. If you would like to attend, send an email to WeaselBell Productions, and let us know. You will be directed to a sekrit webpage with all of the details. We do ask once you have decided to attend to let us know so we can coordinate an expected count with venue management. Once there if you are hungry or thirsty simply order from the onsite menu and pay separately. Cash and credit cards accepted. Next, although fun, we have decided to take a break from the raffles and mug sales this year. Depending on how it goes, that may be something we bring back in future years. While your generosity is always appreciated, with no prize table, please leave donations and contributions at home.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a reply email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email then go to the website with the password provided. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

No gun stuff this weekend though I could have shot a match. Something about having a cold and the cold eye of the wife may have prevented my shooting this weekend.

The match next weekend is long range and the 06 is out of action until further notice so probably out of luck.

18 BLAM!

Howdy weasel!

I took son #1 with me to the range yesterday.

Howdy!

Went to the range today with, son #1. He’s never been a very good shot. When he started, more times than not, he didn’t hit paper at 7 yards.

He bought an M&P Shield in .40. Still. Not very good, but we worked on dry fire with his red dot to practice a smooth trigger pull. He got slightly better.

I gave him my G19 for Christmas (no red dot or green dot or chartreuse dot), I thought perhaps something a little less heavy may help.

Darned if the kid didn’t put 25 rounds through the same hole! It was insane! And fun. And he had a huge grin on his face all the way home.

I guess the G19 just works for him. It never did for me. I prefer the Walther PPQ. Or a 1911

Posted by: nurse ratched at April 27, 2025 07:11 PM (CFSPL)

19 Range report: went to the desert with Moron Osprey this past week. He wrung out some of his firearms, and I did some of mine. The Peon PCC was run using 124 grain Sellier and Bellot 9 mm, and ran very well on that. I had one failure to feed instance out of a hundred rounds, and I am prepared to chalk that up to a Peon finger fault in filling the mag, or failing to seat the mag fully in the well. These are Colt SMG mags, in a mag well adaptor.

And the safety lever detent, which was troublesome last trip out, worked perfectly, once I used a file to blunt the point on its tip, and to ever-so-slightly chamfer the top of the pin. World of difference.

Sounds like he found the gun that fits him. That's half the battle right there - and I'm sure he had fun with that target.

21 One nice thing with dotted pistols is you learn a lot about your grip and trigger pull by being aware of the dot before and after the bang.

28 What do all y'all think? Do you have a plan? For those not required to inform police you're carrying, do you plan to do so anyway? If not, why not?

I've had three "opportunities" to test my plan over the years. In each instance, hands on the wheel with CCW permit and DL readily visible. I calmly stated that I was carrying, along with volunteering information as to where my sidearm was concealed. Two of the officers stated that they appreciated my candor and the third just shrugged and wrote me a ticket for an expired registration.

Posted by: Notorious BFD at April 27, 2025 07:16 PM (mH6SG)

29 I'm 60, been shooting recreationally all my life, and professionally while in the Corps. And these days, other than a 1911 I inherited that's a safe queen and a beat up old 92G, I don't own a single handgun without an optic. Or long gun for that matter. Not a wheel gun guy, as you might have guessed.

Presbyopia and just plain being faster with a dot on a handgun is the reason my collection of handguns now all have optics.

It doesn't take long to get good with one, and then it's not long before you're better than with irons, especially as the range increases.

Big bonus, your situational awareness is much better since you're shooting with both eyes open, and focused downrange at the target, not the front sight. If you're worried about the dot bouncing around, that's an easy training issue to solve.

Reliability of the optics has come a looooong way, battery life is measured in years for most models, mounting solutions have greatly improved, and you (should) always have backup irons on a carry piece just in case the sceptics are right.

They're here to stay, not a gimmick.

33 If pulled over, DL and permit will be ready. I believe AZ has a "duty to inform" law on the books if carrying concealed when stopped.

Any jurisdiction outside of AZ, I'll inform, because I much prefer not to surprise an officer.

The “weapon” in the soldier’s hands is not a traditional firearm — it’s an anti-drone jammer gun.

Specifically, from the shape and design, it looks like a model similar to the DroneGun Tactical or a comparable anti-drone electronic warfare device. These devices:
• Jam the control signals between a drone and its operator.
• Disrupt GPS, video feed, and command links.
• Force the drone to either land immediately or return to its point of origin.

Key features you’re seeing:
• The large barrel-like structure is actually an array of antennas.
• The design is lightweight for a soldier to aim at fast-moving drones.
• It’s used especially by military, air force security, and even at special event security.

This guy was checking his SP-10 scope set-up. He had me fire a few rounds - very nice low-recoil situation. He checked us out based on the reco of the sniper/Instructor who practices for his precision matches at the club. 68 I've spoken of my Winchester 94 30-30 that I am giving my oldest grandson who starts college this fall. He will be a fifth generation owner.

Made in 1928 and bought new by my gramps, it was given by him to my dad in 1935 or so when he graduated high school. It's got the saddle ring on the L side of the case.

Grandson gets another antique, a 1954 Winchester 62-A pump .22, bought for me for my 12th birthday. The gun must have sat in a general store for two years after it got built.

And he gets my replica Colt Navy 36 revolver, Italian-made, exactly what is selling today under the Pietta brand name. That one is fun to shoot but I'd no idea #11 percussion caps were so hard to find. Dad bought it new around 1963 and black powder ammo was available then in more gun shops than today.

Fortunately for grandson, his route from Pittsburgh to State College PA takes him through Ebensburg where there is a great old time sporting goods store that has everything needed.

71 Deranged:
Remember how I sent my Vortex Viper back to Vortex because it clearly had a windage setting problem?
I received a polite phone call from Vortex that my scope was operating at 100% when received.
Huh.
Well then, the Ruger clearly had a shot-out barrel from over 3K rounds through it.
Scope came back Friday, I carefully remounted it and went to the range. After zeroing at 25, I went to 100 yards. Two groups of .5” and one suppressed of .423”. I then did first round hits on the dueling tree paddles at 200 and 300.
So, after accounting for two parts of the equation, what was the danged deranged problem?
Third part. Operator Error Obviously.
I suspect that I was chasing the windage with the knob, got lost and corrected in the wrong direction. More than once.

Texas has a duty to inform law also. I can't prove it but I have been informed that every time any LE scans a car license plate that scan pings back to the owner info and alerts them if they have a state issued CCW permit. I know that happens in Texas with a car with Texas plates but I have been told that other states that scan plates get the same results. I do not know if that is true or not.

I brought my newly adjusted eyesight to the range today to see what I could see. Expectations were high because my distance vision in my right dominant eye has been fantastic and the mid range vision in the left eye equally good. Would I need my patch? Would target acquisiton improve?
Brought all 3 glocks, 22, G48, G48 with green dot. It was not at all what I expected. Set target at 7 yds. I could either see the target or see the white dot butnot both. Luckily I had an excellent coarch in Ed L who told me to focus on the white dot.

88 Back in 2010 when taking my CHL class we were told that you absolutely give the cop the CHL with your license when stopped. Why? Because they will find out if you have one anyway when they run your DL. Your mission, as was explained to the class, was to get out of the ticket.

Besides, you do that anyway, it voids a question they love to ask: “Do you have a warrant?” Well, if you have the LTC, at least here in TX no cop will waste their time asking. You can’t have one and have an LTC.

Last time I got stopped by DPS is was two-three minutes with a warning. The only reason is was that long was my insurer’s app was being a PITA. IMO the license plates - USAF Retired - helped. The DPS trooper had to know he wasn’t walking up on a gangbanger with a two mile long rap sheet at least.

91 Today my P226 Legion had a weird failure. Thing just locked up tight with slide about 5 mm from battery. With a live round in it. Had a little bit of wiggle but the slide wouldn't move.

Not expected behavior from a 226 much less a Legion. Called the RSO over he wanted to take some pliers to it. Eh maybe not.

Jiggles the slide some more and got a couple mm more motion - enough to see in the chamber that there was indeed brass there. But also enough to get a narrow blade screwdriver in to pry it. Once it moved back enough the round fell out and the gun was back to normal.

Looking at the round the base near the rim of the case looked a bit swollen. It had not fired so must have come like that. It is a reman ammo that I got - I thought it was cool has a green polymer coating on the bullet - but have had a ton of problems with it. Have to look through my email to see the seller so I can warn you away from it.

One of the advantages of a red dot is that you can focus on the target.

Your vision will probably improve slightly in the next few weeks. You may need to go in for a 'laser shot' to take care of clouding in the membrane behind the lens. It's no biggie.

You'll be happy you had this done!

One time I did, it was because the DPS trooper was questioning why I was taking the route I did to work. Which pissed me off, because unless I engaged in trespassing, or, say, drove around barricades, no cop has any business whatsoever asking me that. Then later he starts giving me the business about why my address on my DL has a town’s name on it when I don’t live in the town. “Take that up with the Post Office!”

Result: warning.

After that I really like it. Being able to use both eyes seems like a good idea for situational awareness.

109 I would really like, some Gun Thread (not tonight), to get some thoughts on red dots. It is completely outside of my experience, so thoughts and recommendations would be interesting, across the board pistol, shotty, and AR.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 20, 2025 09:28 PM

I took a red dot (Aimpoint Comp M4S) on my M4 for my last deployment to Afghanistan in 2011-12. My experience from the pre-deployment training (no combat use, thank goodness) is that red dots on your rifle are at their best in a poor/low/no light CQB environment when you can't see or use your iron sights at all. My buddies w/ ACOGs on their M4s had some difficulty learning the Bindon aiming system of putting your ACOG's aiming chevron on the target while using both eyes. It's doable, but it took more range time than we had to work with. Red dots don't do so well at 50m and beyond unless you can visualize or guess where the bullet's trajectory will be at range. It can be learned, but I wasn't able to figure it out before deployment. Regarding batteries, I chose the Aimpoint Comp M4S because of its long battery life (80,000 hours on one AA battery - about 8 years continuous on time).

115 I use two red dots, one on my Ruger Max 9 edc, and one on my S&W FPC. I hate the one on the pistol - the dot cowitnesses with the iron sights at the very bottom of the glass and is hard to find quickly.
But for the carbine, I love it. Shooting in IDPA matches is laughably easy - I have both eyes open, the glass is farther from my face, and I only see it as superimposed on the target.
I’ve shot other people’s pistols with red dots and still am slow to pick it up. I do need more practice.

But it does provide good info for state laws to include duty to inform and stand your ground. It does NOT incorporate locality info unfortunately.

I would still like a planner that I can say I want to travel from X to Y and give me a legal route. And if I am approaching a boundary where carry is not legal, for example, tell me that - maybe to the extent of "get off a t exit 11 and place a firearm somewhere not in the passenger compartment, separate from the ammunition then continue on this path OR detour to this route."

124 EdL the SEAL last week had a very nice scope on his SP-10 (don't know the brand), and an offset green dot for closer range work. Both were very easy to use.

When I finally get around to building a short-range AR I figure I'll have a dot and irons on it.

129 Some guys at the pistol matches have PCCs with dots. They're so easy and accurate to use I actually wonder why they use them in a match - don't see the sport or challenge. Boring. But indeed excellent short-range systems. Have started to think about getting/building one for "home defense" purposes (the boss is handy with the M1 carbine, but weight seems to be an issue, so a PCC would have to be very light).

I recall a few years back a guy on an upper range let me shoot his Ruger PCC with a dot on it. I had a steel plate hanging at the backstop, 100 yds. First shot - ping. And for the next 4 or 5 shots. Ridiculously easy to use. He had the model with the heat shield that resembles a PPsh-41 (my grail gun).

But in 2003, the artist was accused of using his Christian faith as a tool to fraudulently induce people to invest in the Thomas Kinkade Signature Gallery – a chain of stores that sold his artwork. Two years before his death, Kinkade filed for bankruptcy protection and was arrested for driving under the influence. He was accused several times of sexual harassment, and had a penchant for “marking his territory,” as the L.A. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at April 27, 2025 08:24 PM (Wnv9h)

133 sra blaster's bad day at the range today has her reconsidering her EDC. She has always had weak wrists and the snappiness of the Keltec PF9 led to the choice of the Sig P365 as EDC. It is less snappy than the Keltec. But today she was having trouble from the first shot. It is not the gun, she recognizes it as a her problem. BUT she wants to solve it with a gun.

I think that she may need to go heavier for her carry gun - something to tame the snappiness is more important for her than the carry weight. So at the table of the DMV MGC and nini-MoMe we started discussing options and I wanted to find Kimber's 9mm non-1911 based pistol. But they have something new! Called the CDS9. It looks pretty nice. And we do like Kimber. And its all metal - stainless slide and aluminum frame. Concealed Double Stack (hence CDS), with 13+1 and/or 15+1 mags.

It is very new so I suspect no one has any experience with it. Hopefully our range will have a loaner available. Of course, I need to plan to buy two. Because that is how we roll.

Anyway, thoughts on this - adding mass?

Discussed the new H&K CC9 in the thread last week. Quick and dirty review: After about 50+ rounds of four different varieties of 9mm (Federal Synetch 124 grain, American Eagle 147 grain, 124 grain +P, and 147 grain Federal HST), no jams or malfunctions of any kind. Good trigger. Lightweight (20 ounces) means you'll feel the recoil even though the pistol has decent ergonomics for a subcompact pistol. As a new entry to the market, getting it will be tough until H&K starts cranking up the production line. $700 MSRP. Watch this space for a fuller write up in the (not so near) future.

142 First of all, my bona fides. I have been carrying since 1996 and have bought and paid for the milling of MANY of my handguns. I have a lot of red dots, mostly holosuns or Vortex dots on close to a dozen handguns. If we include rifles, closer to 20 weapons.

And as a 55 year old, red dots make a huge difference...at ranges greater than 7 yards.

At 7 yards or less, irons are better. 10 yards, it's a wash. At 15 yards and greater, HUGE improvement in shot groups using a red dot.

145 Here's the thing about red dots...they are single focal plane. So if you're shooting left handed, which I did for near a year due to Tendontitus, it greatly increases accuracy.

It also helps first shot hit speed. Once you have the red dot zeroed, all you need to do is put the dot on the target, press the trigger and the bullet goes where the dot is. It's just that easy.

Now, SPOTTING the red dot can be hard. My solution there is to put the dot just over the front sight and then USE the iron sights. If I pretend I'm using iron sights but then see the red dot, suddenly I have a half second advantage, because once the dot in on target, I can break the trigger and the bullet will go where the dot is when the trigger breaks.

A PSA Dagger with a dot will run you under $500 and it will put bullets in bad guys, I have no doubt about that.

If you want to spend more on an RMR or a high end CZ or 2011, a red dot will be more durable and will probably mean your first shots will be more accurate. Not just on range/tournament toys, but on your EDC tools too.

I seem to shoot significantly better holding the gun AWAY from my eyeline and down around the center of my chest. I also seem to have much better situational awareness while looking down at the target while taking in the entire view in front of me.

Check out the 9 Hole Reviews channel. One of the hosts updated an H&K SP5K-PDW platform with a Holosun ACSS bullet drop compensator optic, an M-LOK handguard mounting a light and short vertical foregrip, and a B&T collapsing stock (yes, it's an SBR). Very light - about 6 pounds total. With a 15 round magazine, it's even concealable in a laptop case or under a long coat. The bullet drop compensator optic allows reliable hits on targets out to 100+ meters. A lot of capability in a small package. If H&K is beyond your price point, a clone can serve equally well.

I have a Sig P226 with a dot and one without. My experience is congruent with MAE. I think I described it in an earlier gubthread as I am just as accurate with irons, but I can acquite the target faster with the dot. That probably works out the same to inside 7 yards irons are better and at 15 yards and out the dot is better.

168 Next, red dots on rifles...no question there. Optics on rifles mean faster target acquisition and more rounds on target. It's not even close compared to iron sights.

For me, with my eyes, at longer ranges red dots are essential for accuracy and rapid shot acquisitions. At short ranges, I don't need the dot. But then, I don't need the sights honestly either. Good presentation and practice will but bullets in bad guys at 5 or 7 or 3 yards without recourse to sight alignment. I'm not a Secret Service troll, I practice weekly and can hit what I aim at at short range even under stress.

Are you old, like I'm old? Switch to a red dot optic. Yes there will be a learning curve. It isn't bad and your performance and confidence will be greater with the dot.

That said, yes, I do carry and irons-only handgun now and again. Like my G21 which puts bullets in paper even at 15 yards.

But a red dot on it is better.

At short ranges, this is totally fine.
A laser is great at short ranges (I have one on my FNX 45), and the 'center of mass' aiming technique will work fine at 7 yards or less. Will you win IPSEC or IDPA with it? No but it will work vs bad guys at conversational distances.

189 146 Hiya MARK!

If you are shooting at someone greater than 15 yards, WA State will throw your ass in jail.

I dunno. I get distracted by the dots. And in close quarters, there’s a pretty good chance I won’t get the pistol up to my eyes and arms fully extended anyway.

Posted by: nurse ratched at April 27, 2025 08:33 PM (9BeIJ)

Hi Nurse!

If I'm shooting at someone at 15+ yards, I have damn good reason for it. Yes, I'm a white male in WA and possibly I'm fucked. But if I've pulled my pistol, there's a reason. I don't carry for the fun of it.

I advocate learning "point shooting" for this very reason. Learn to grip your gun so that it's just like pointing your forefinger at things. Almost everyone can naturally point pretty accurately.

And, it's how you get that shot off quickly when the bad guy is rushing you inside 5 yards or so - before you ever get that gun to eye level.

I'm not advocating trying to learn to shoot without using your sights (of whatever sort), but concentrating on making your grip and aim coincide with your natural pointing ability. When trying to do this, I think I discovered my grip on the 9mm 1911 wasn't what it should be for getting that straight-back trigger pull - so it's VERY fundamentals. (It might be one of the factors in finding the gun you shoot well - one with a grip that accommodates that pointing.)

Remember the old video on cops learning to shoot, and shooting with the gun below eye level?

The G21 is my EDC this week. It's very lightweight for a .45 with 13 rounds and I just demonstrated that it's accurate in slow fire and double taps, this week.

I actually think dots on small guns are even more important as accuracy on them is even harder than duty sized handguns. That said, I haven't tried a MAX 9. Rugers can be hit or miss. No pun intended. I have some damn good Rugers.

195 At short ranges, this is totally fine.
A laser is great at short ranges (I have one on my FNX 45), and the 'center of mass' aiming technique will work fine at 7 yards or less. Will you win IPSEC or IDPA with it? No but it will work vs bad guys at conversational distances.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo, food, water at April 27, 2025 08:44 PM

I wrote poorly (as usual).

I am not talking about aiming at the target for "center mass" training. For my version of "precision" shooting, my groups are smaller and closer to the aim point with this technique.

However, I certainly agree with you about not winning any matches. There is no amount of practice that would make me an expert pistol shooter at my (lower) level of athleticism.

I am just working on best practices in the event that I am ever in a self defense situation. I am just trying to get better at that level.

210 First handgun I ever purchased is a Ruger P95. I bought it before I became a "gun guy" and I often thought of it as a 2 tone yuppie gun.

But I like it. And it works. Like all the time. Eats everything including Wolf and Tul steelcase.

And, of course, I have another P95. It went to the range today. It had a really bad day. It doesn't like that green HiTek ammo at all. And it HATES being limpwristed. At all.

It resides in one of my distributed hidden safes in the house and I don't think it is up to emergency duty. Going to have to replace it. I don't want a Glock but maybe I will slot the PSA Dagger into that role.

Barrel has real rifling, so I can shot lead bullets without worry. Trigger is Glock crunchy, but of a reasonable pull weight so I won't be fiddling with aftermarket parts.

Drizzling rain today, so I didn't get a chance to shoot it.

Best part is it takes Glock magazines, so I don't have to go searching for Ruger-proprietary ones.

225 Scoob is using Fast Eddie Felsen from the Paul Newman character in two films.

If it helps, sighting systems are basically a way of indexing your firearm to the target and there are multiple ways to do that. Some are much better than others.

Re lasers and red dots, Louie Awerbuck noted like Weasel that they are going to wobble--no cure for that but you can make your wobbles smaller and if that is in the A zone--that is all that matters. Aka his Aim Small, Miss Small.

I find they go with carbine style rifles and something like a PCC quite well for me. Beyond that, I prefer a scope past 100 yards and iron sights on a pistol. FWIW, unless you are a cop or expect TEOTWASKI (Zombie invasion), in most cases, certainly in most indoor self defense scenarios, you will be shooting handguns at 25 yards or less for legal reasons.

Beyond 25 yards, reasonableness and target id kicks in hard as the reasonableness can diminish as the distance gets greater.

People in wide open western states get a bit more leeway at times because you shoot a grizzly as far away as you can accurately hit one that is charging you. You might just need multiple shots for a stop.

Cost and availability of mags is an important concern for self defense arms for most people. If you train with it, a minimum of six and up to 10 are useful. Training mag changes (leaving out that tactical mag tactic) means you drop them outta the gun and ram a new one in. Essentially, they are expendables. Carrying with a spare mag can also end up requiring mag changes every so often for carry duty.

Number needed adds up fast.

Which is what makes those really cool gun purchases problematic. For anything new with a proprietary magazine, you have to consider stocking a box of 20 or more in the back of your closet, just in case they never make anymore. Acknowledging that is part, I think, of what makes the AR such a popular platform - you can actually treat them as expendables and it's easy to get more.

263 Which is what makes those really cool gun purchases problematic. For anything new with a proprietary magazine, you have to consider stocking a box of 20 or more in the back of your closet, just in case they never make anymore. Acknowledging that is part, I think, of what makes the AR such a popular platform - you can actually treat them as expendables and it's easy to get more.

Yep. Frequently arms makers change up their firearms just so they have to buy new sets of mags to go with their firearm. Don't care to own those firearms except as a collector's item.

Glock and Springfield (mostly) do not do that. And that is a reason to own 1911's or Browning Hi Powers of varying makes (except the newest one by Browning ironically) as well. Plenty of excellent aftermarket mags made by MecGar. True of third generation Smith and Wessons as well.

265 On alignment of red dots - my process is this - get a laser bore site doodad and align the dot with the laser spot at whatever you think your range should be - I go with 15 yards as that is the farthest unobstructed sightline you can get in my house.

Then take it to the range and dial it in more if necessary. But the laser bore site thingy will give you a very good starting point.

272 On firearms, do what works for you on sighting but practice it and follow Weasel's fundamentals (which are universally taught by good instructors btw).

But, a there is a critical thing to remember as you pile more tech on a pistol or rifle. It gives Murphy wider latitude to play havoc and requires more upkeep to check batteries, check tightness, check settings (using fingernail polish or liquid paper in a line across windage, etc. can tell you if your sight settings have been monkeyed with or moved), etc.

And ALWAYS have a backup plan if tech fails including using the very shape of the firearm's slide as a rough index or backup iron sights.

Anyway, I appreciate taking his time in composing such thoughtful, intellligent posts. I'm not sure whether the correct response is "good" or "yes, please"

Because those are all of the same group of money laundering barnacles we elected Trump to try to pry off of the bottom of the ship of state before it causes America and Americans to sink.

Wait, I guess "More please" is an option, too.

Supposedly, Iowa does not tie CCL status to drivers license or vehicle registration. Supposedly.

CCLs here are issued by county sheriffs, not by the state. I don't know if sheriffs forward that information to a central state database, they probably do, for dealing with revocation of permits. Iowa is also constitutional carry, so not everyone who is legally carrying here has a permit.

Eric Weinstein discusses something that is probably similar. Harvard is somehow simultaneously the best and worst school in the United States.

I still default to the "let them spend their own money if it's so rewarding" position, especially since the argument seems to be "but using our tax dollars helps the medical industry make trillions on what you and your grandchildren already paid for"

Come in two types and useful for rifles and long guns as well. The two types are cartridge specific laser cartridges and arbor types. Going cheap on either is a waste of money for the most part. Cheap arbors move or deflect in bores and cheap no name cartridge lasers can be off center from the mfg.

291 Re laser sighting, I have used both and have a Wheeler magnetic arbor green laser for old iron sight rifle corrections.

Have some cartridge types for firearms as I have sight tools for changing sights on them to night sights/fiber optic sights or to replace old sights.

Both work to get you on paper at ranges and with the proper technique can greatly reduce your fired rounds necessary to zero and ensure POI =POA where you want it in distance.

The design and construction of the dam is truly a testament to the desire of man to control his environment, and designing and building the structure to achieve that goal.
