[moviegique]: Warfare

TJM: I spiked moviegique's post on Saturday night because our unspoken schedule said one thing, and I felt really, really bad about it. So, highlighting this on a Monday afternoon, with much more traffic, seems like a nice way to try and make up to him. Sorry, moviegique. Now, everyone read his wise words. Take over, moviegique:

Tonight we have three movies under consideration: Warfare, The Ballad of Wallis Island, and When Fall Is Coming. But to spare the fools who read the content a 2,200 word post, I've posted the review for Warfare here as being the most likely one to interest the readers of a Smart and Cruel Military Blog.

Interested parties can read the reviews for the other two on my blog:

Wallis Island is a delightful comedy-drama: Funny but not all fluff.

When Fall Is Coming is a French drama about a woman with a troubled relationship with her daughter which is rather complicated by the daughter's death. The movie takes a pleasant turn into mystery/suspense-land as the mother and her friends are potentially implicated in the death.

I've decided on May 17th, I'm going to present a defense of the 2005 Pride & Prejudice. So you may want to set your alarms for then (or set them to ignore).

And Now For Our Feature Attraction!

Alex Garland is a talented director. I think. A novelist who transitioned to movies with scripts like 28 Days LaterSunshine and Dredd, he made a big splash with his directorial debut Ex Machina, which was good, overrated but also easily the peak of his efforts—leading as it did into Annihilation, a muddled distaff remake of Stalker, and then descended into the risible Men and Civil War—well, let's just say there's no confusion as to his politics.

It gives one pause, whether to watch a movie about a squad in Ramadi during the Iraq War, under these circumstances. However, he had a co-director and co-writer on this, first time writer/director Ray Mendoza, a Navy Seal who was part of the squad that took part in the events detailed in this film. Once again, The Boy and I decided to roll the dice.

Rolling the dice can pay off, people.

1.jpgThey're watching 2005's "Call On Me" video which is confusing because it looks like the sleaziest Aerobicize video from 1981.

In a way, Warfare is like a Steven Soderbergh joint: Its very factual, very unadorned, and it could be considered low-key, except for the whole "holy crap, this is stressful as hell." In fact, I started to think of it as PTSD: The Movie. Or maybe MTSD—Mid-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Our American squad is sent to do some surveillance on some Iraqi terrorists—I was actually sort of vague on what "success" would mean here—when the locals catch on to them and lay siege. One or two members of the squad are lightly injured, and when the others try to get them evacuated, they all end up in way too close proximity to an IED.

They're immediately shell-shocked, of course, and their injuries are now much, much worse. Also, command doesn't want to send in another evacuation vehicle because, hey, the first one got hit by an IED.

2.jpgWar is the "H" word.

It's ninety minutes of pure stress. There's very little character development, no back stories, not much in the way of dialogue, and the whole movie basically takes place in a box made of concrete, with a poor, terrorized Iraqi family stuffed into one bedroom.

It's excellent.

There's no politics to speak of. I mean, "War is bad," I guess. But that's not really a political statement when you've just stepped on an IED.

3.jpg"Hello. May we come in and borrow all of your furniture and punch a hole in the wall? (The answer is yes.)"

Obviously, it's not for everyone. I'm not joking about the stress level. The Boy and I were the only ones in the theater for this, and I can't see it being a crowd-pleaser. It looks to make about $20M on a budget of $20M, and even that strikes me as remarkably high given the content.

It's a man's man's film. From a cinematic standpoint, you could say that the characters should've been developed more, or the action should have felt like it had more of a point, but this kind of unglamorously violent, goal-oriented action came across as very pure: If you're in combat, history doesn't matter much—none of this "gal back home" or "sick mother in the hospital" sentimentality that are clichés of war movies.

You and your squad are in trouble, and you're going to get out of it, and that's all that matters just now.

The Boy and I liked it. Ray Mendoza might never do anything else cinematically, and he'll have done good. And I hope this kind of "show the world" approach (versus the "describe a world that suits a particular political viewpoint" approach) takes hold with Garland, because he could really turn out some masterpieces.

34 I just got out of a matinee showing of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith". It's been 20 years since I saw it, and while I didn't dislike it this go-around --watching Clone Wars softened me to the prequels -- it's still burdened by clunky dialog and too much politics. But at least it felt like Star Wars.

The preview of the new Wes Anderson flick looks extremely WesAndersony. Which is my jam.

I'll probably see "Thunderbolts" because I've always liked the D-Listers more than the Super-doopers. Where's my Flaming Carrot movie?

I like the one from 1980. I just saw ad clips from Colin Firth and it seemed to be that they exposed Darcy's feelings too much, they clue to to his agitation at Pemberly in an added scene where he dives in a pond. This cuts down the shock of his civility to Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle in his own home. If they did similar additions earlier and later I feel it would weaken the three big shocks in the story. Well the three directly related to Elizabeth anyhow.

And in the 1980 the actress who plays Jane was in both Blake's 7 and Faulty Towers, where Basil the Rat is in her purse.

64 OT, but I couldn't wait to share:

Great news - all of my tumors have shrunk by half! The plan for now is to continue on this chemotherapy medication until it stops working; no idea how long that might be. When that does happen, we will look at whether or not surgery can be done (right now it cannot, due to the fact that there are multiple tumors).

The surgeon did say that my response to this chemo has been "dramatic", and he is "cautiously optimistic" that surgery will be an option in the future.

The surgeon has had about 20-25 patients over the last 3-4 years who had the mutation which allowed them to take this medication in the first place. Apparently only 10% of people with this type of cancer have this mutation, and of that 10%, about 40% have a positive response to the medication.

So everything looks good for now! I will have another CT Scan in 3 months to monitor my progress. 😊❤️🥳

Edited to add: Oh, and only 10% of people who have Bile Duct Cancer have the Intrahepatic type.

That means that I am one of the only 1% of people with this type of cancer who has this mutation. There are usually around 800-1000 people who test positive for this cancer in any given year,

I'll try to find it, but I read an article recently that was discussing it in a serious manner and trying to not be cancelled.

But the main point?

Swimming.

All the jokes and stereotypes and "you can't say that, racist!!!" stuff that you hear? That's a big reason for the disparity. Apparently failing the water / swimming sections is a big part of what weeds out the groups.

That means that I am one of the only 1% of people with this type of cancer who has this mutation. There are usually around 800-1000 people who test positive for this cancer in any given year,

75 I never heard of Warfare until Film Threat praised it. I had a free afternoon and went to see it.

Holy sh*t.

Exceptional film. The most realistic film about modern warfare I have seen. It's boring, mundane, tense, violent, confusing, agonizing, infuriating, tragic, and costly. And to realize in the closing credits these are real people who actually experienced this.

War is what hell considers hell.

I had a black radio operator attached to my Recon Plt. I always swam next to him during helo-cast ops due to his poor swimming but also because he would go hyperthermic quickly in water. This was Hawaii, the water isn't that could. He would go hyperthermic in the jungle, too. Being really skinny has its draw backs.

91 I'd love to watch it but will have to wait until its goes to streaming. Its been nearly 17-18yrs since I'd been to the desert and seen what I've seen and taken part of but I'd like to see it for no other reason than to give the proper respect to those that we put in harms way and then told - yeah, you need to figure it out - bastards.

Couldn't watch 13hrs in the theater as it was too difficult but did eventually watch it at home. Cried in frustration the first time I watched it but an excellent movie overall. Megan Leavey is a good movie as well. And many others. Kevin Bacon's "Taking Chance" hit really close to home as I've had some of that type of duty a time or three.

Vietnam, Korean, WWI, WWI, don't bother me as much since I actually wasn't there but those from this generation hit my hard from a reality standpoint.

Anyway, enough of that.

Carry on...

On a sports game site we once had a protracted debate about how many 7-year-olds one could beat up if the fighting surface was confined to a normal high school basketball gymnasium, and the 7-year-olds were unleashed all at once to attack you. Hilarity ensued.

>>Why does the 2005 Pride and Prejudice need a defense? It was far and away the best version ever made.

The best version was the Jennifer Ehle, Colin firth PBS adaptation from 1995.

Of this there can be no debate.

155 "...Annihilation, a muddled distaff remake of Stalker..."
Looking back at the source book, it can be viewed as Roadside Picnic (the source for Stalker) meets The Colour Out of Space.
