  • What this country needs is a really good $20,000 electric truck. Apparently. (The Verge) (archive site)

I mean, given what vehicles cost these days, it's worth a shot.

There are a few corners cut, to be sure. The Slate Truck is available in one colour - slate grey, has no sound system, and only does 150 miles on a charge. And the body panels are plastic, not metal, though that's not a first even on much more expensive models.

And it's designed to be repairable by the owner, though how far that goes is something that we'll have to see when it comes out next year.

18 The Ars Technica commetariat is saying they are ready to go back to something like a 1970s Japanese pickup truck. It seems modernizing that using a small 3 or 4 cylinder engine would be cheaper, have far better range and lifespan than an EV that in reality is going to have about 100 mile range. But that will never fly with those people as that takes all the fun out of saving Mother Earth through militant virtue signaling.

The owners wound up stranded in Atlanta as another passenger had to be removed from the flight by ambulance, and the required delay causing a missed connection back home to Charleston.

Fortunately the were able to get in on another later flight, and are now safely home. But if one were to offer prayers for the unknown passenger who needed emergency medical care, it would be appreciated.

Photos of what is presumed to be the father cat show distinctive Norwegian Forest Cat traits, but the mother is a short haired tuxedo.

But both kittens have marked long haired traits, and Frog is continuing to gain size and weight, as a Norwegian would do. 10 months old, and 12.4 pounds.
And little Margo is holding at about 7.5 pounds, but her fur is growing longer every day.

Netflix now has dialogue-only subtitles because of the current trend for actors to mumble incoherently through their lines.

Compare to the movies of the '30s and '40s, where dialogue was crisply enunciated. I understand the Mid-Atlantic accent was widely used among actresses was that it was picked up very well by the microphones of the day.

Actually, I don't know if today's movies actually have dialogue. More like the various characters talking past each other, gunfire and CGI.

63 Evening and morning, late (and weekend) toilers and early risers! 'Tis Saturn's Day, the day of errands and relaxation!

Disaster struck this morning. I dropped one of my pipes onto my tile kitchen floor, and the stem, the part that you clench in your teeth, snapped off, with part of it stuck inside the pipe. I have no way to get that piece out, and even if I did, regluing the stem won't work. It would never be strong enough to stand up to normal use. I've written to a long-time and well-respected pipe repair place in PA and will see what they say.

It's not like the pipe is my favorite; I haven't had it that long. But I hate to simply throw it away if it can be repaired at reasonable cost.

I've been complaining about both of these for years. It's heartening to see that even younger viewers use the closed captioning. And when did H'wood stop using Technicolor and good lighting? The new True Grit, for instance, for all its virtues, is greyish and dull compared to the 1969 version.

73 Yes, the more "naturalistic" acting style of today (thanks, Marlon Brando) means the actors murmur and mumble more than in earlier times. We watched Hitchcock's Rear Window the other night, and had zero problem understanding Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, Wendell Corey, or Raymond Burr in the few lines he has. I was beginning to think my hearing was going, that I needed a new speaker for my 2020 TV, or both.

82 No, it's not your hearing going. I mean, that might also be true, but the younger generations also watch TV with subtitles on because they can't tell what the hell the actors are saying.

I watch with subtitles for two reasons:

1. I watch a lot of anime and prefer listening to it in Japanese. Same with Bollywood movies.

2. I tend keep the volume low because audio levels for dialogue are set at about 20db and action scenes suddenly jump to 130.

Last night night, we watched a new Netflix action thriller titled, "Havoc".

On the downside, it was filmed in MumbleVision(TM).

On the upside: It contained more violent death than ten average action movies. I think a thousand or so people were killed with shotguns, pistols, and machine guns at the climax.

No long bows were involved. Though a Spear Gun(!) was.

A whole Great Lake or two of fake blood was unleashed during this cinematic masterpiece.

Check it out.
