Airport people vs. airport robots. This oversized, mouthy robot Roomba and its cousins look a bit like the R2-D2. Pic below from the ATL airport. One of the vacu-bots got stuck between two rows of gate seats - going back and forth like the Austin Powers cart scene. The robot kept saying, "Please step aside, robot is cleaning." Surprisingly less annoying than some of the airport people.

These robot cleaners use the SLAM system - or they used to. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (I read that somewhere). Simple algorithm that is decent at mapping but not very good at navigating all the ped traffic.

While stuck at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, I came across the display pictured below.

70's lunchboxes.

Daredevil Evel Knievel soared into pop culture fame with his wild stunts and larger-than-life image. His 1970s lunchbox often captured him mid-jump, cape flying, motorcycle wheels spinning through the air.

Who had a lunchbox? And/or which one did you REALLY want? I always kind of wanted the Six Million Dollar Man version. Who else was a brown bag kid?

How do US airports get their three letter codes? I thought you'd never ask.

It's easy to assume that airfield identifiers correlate with letters in the field's name: "JFK" because it's the initials of the late President after whom the airport is named; "MIA" because those are the first three letters in "Miami"; and "LAS" because that's the first half of "Las Vegas." Yet, it's actually way more complicated than that, involving at least three governing bodies with their own separate naming standards.

Airports and their names? Sure, sure - airport eponyms. Have that for you also.

BMS4-20 is graphite epoxy face with nomex core.

One of my co-workers said that the 777 has composite graphite floor beams with BMS4-23 floor panels. Maybe the type floor panels are a customer option.

First it was the Jawa frying his circuits. Followed by Vader blowing his top off. Getting eaten by a monster on Degobah. Then R2 just had to stick his data-wand into a Bespin power receptacle, R2 got a real shock that time. And finally on the forest moon of Endor he took a blaster bolt which really scrambled him.

21 I'm reposting before going to bed.

223 I want to thank everyone here for keeping me relatively sane over the last while.

January.... Mom died.
February.....my Uncle Leonard....90. I did a lot for him
.
March.....my computer died. Lost my Microsoft account. That was a gift that kept on giving.

April....Trumpy disappeared last week. My friends' cats. Snowflake and Trumpy would come in around 11am and sleep to about 6pm and I'd let them out.

And the dog Ralphy is limping horribly. I took him for shots for arthritis but it no longer seems to be working.

Tomorrow. New day. There were a few people here going to be cutting down on the booze. I'm joining you tomorrow.

Today was actually pretty nice. My friends had me over for lunch.The kids loved the pictures of their cats in our house. We had eggs, bacon, bread pasta. It was really nice. I haven't had a happy day for so long.

Tomorrow I start recreating my life. My friend is an engineer. Talented as hell. He's building the kids a tree house this week. I'm helping out and doing grunt work.

Snowflake just came in and is resting on the cat tree. I'm not a cat person, but apparently there are exceptions.

The only thing about lunch boxes I know is that to have any value, they have to have an intact thermos. Those thermoses always broke. Don't ask me how I know.

I've been there. The US Air Force used it as a transshipment point for shipping goods and equipment to and from the sand box in support of Operations Northern and Southern Watch. My group helped load the C5 that brought us back to Dover AFB. Tank track pallets are fucking heavy, but so are the big pallets with luggage. Became a moot point after the Iraq invasion. Seville is nearby and a short (45 minutes?) worker van ride to drop you off in front of the Cerveza factory (yes the brand is Cerveza, lol). Partied hard one Saturday night going bar hopping.

I've posted this funny Mom story before. Mom hated me just laying around the living room watching tv. So, yes, out of the house I went. However, this one time I was in my room cleaning my .22 bolt action rifle (about 10 years old). I was so busy I didn't hear her call my name. She (much) later told me she came back to see what I was doing (and if I needed something to do). She saw me cleaning my rifle and she thought to herself, 'He's doing something useful', and walked away without me ever knowing. Mom's version of 'useful' wouldn't fly today.

184 The Born to Be Alive video s fun to showcase all the great dancers from the past. Some of the clips look sped up to match the rhythm of the so-so musical accompaniment. Frankly I remember some of these numbers, particularly the bits from Singing in the Rain, and the original audio was better, picked just to suit the number, and even when patently nostalgic for a past era, like Singing in the Rain, the original music just suited the sequence better. Like the bit where Debbie Reynolds’s character is introduced IIRC had a definite boo oop de doop character that belied her earlier pretensions to style and art.

Same here, with some limitations. When I was young, the area we lived in was rural and sparsely populated. My dad had recently bought a riding lawnmower. One day I decided to take it for a spin. Apparently my little sister ratted me out. I was about a half a mile up the road just about ready to head up a mountain trail when I heard someone honking behind me. Turned around to see my mother and little sister in our old blue Ford Falcon SW. I remembered that punishment for awhile. Wasn't the last time I "borrowed " some of my dad's wheels.

My Dad was the kind of driver who only stopped for gas, and you better pee when he did so. Except when he wanted to stop at his favorite foot-long chili dog joint at a cerain little town on the US road we always traveled. But nothing else. Mom brought those packs of NABS crackers for me to eat. Wouldn't give my Dad any and it pissed him off. She told him if you eat crackers, we'll never stop.

Southern thing I guess. We'd also see Tom's vending machines when we got gas, the machines with the pull handle for each selection. They had those crackers, along with other munchies suitable for driving. We normally drove about 7 1-2 hours and I don't remember ever stopping for a sit down meal but one time: In Appomattox, VA, at a locally famous diner/buffet. Lots of pictures of Boys and Men in grey populated the walls. They even had a little civil war tourist ~~shop~~ counter. Typical Southern, a/k/a Soul, Food. Fried chicken, roast beef, collards, string beans, mashed 'taters, mac 'n cheese, and other mains and sides. But only the one time did we stop.

Celebrated by getting up early and hiking in the Portola Hills above Irvine with some nice people from the Land Conservancy. Hills are still green with yellow mustard flowers all over, bright sunshine and temps in the 60's with a cool breeze. Did about 6 miles and 800 feet elevation gain in a little over two hours.

Now contemplating indulging in a cold brewski and some 70's reruns...

I don't see Alberta joining the United States, at least not immediately. OTOH, I think they will separate from the rest of Canada (maybe with Saskatchewan) within a couple of years. Albertan's(?) have been pissed at Ottawa for years, for good reason. Alberta has been sending 3 times as much tax revenues to the National government as the next province, while getting less services than most. IOW, they've been getting milked.
As an independent country, I'm sure there will be security arrangements with the US, but at this point, they really are not a good fit. If they move a lot more right, maybe, but doubtful. Their oil revenues can support a lot of socialism given the comparatively small population. Leftism is very attractive when you don't have to pay for it.

Conservatives gained 24 seats to while Liberals so far gained 0 if you consider their NDP partners lost 17 of their seats while Liberals gained 17 when the NDP collapsed as their voters went to shore up the Liberals. Greens lost one of two seats and Quebec separatists lost 11 seats out of 33. Liberals will still have a minority government getting NDP votes or from the Bloc Quebecoise.

Status quo election that gives a very slight coalition (Liberal NDP coalition) that has 175 seats counting the Greens. Majority in Parliament is 172. Conservatives have 144. Canada is still Center Left but less so by total share of votes with signs that younger voters are less happy with this status quo coupled with a worsening economy.

If you look at the age demo, it was 60 and older that considered Trump as their biggest issue. Not those 59 and younger and the youngest in Canada appear to be worrying about econ issues the most followed by their version of Millennials.

The tide is going out on leftism for a variety of reasons but old thinking applied inappropriately to new problems seems to be a common concern for younger voters in the West. Probably even in China as the oldsters running that country like Xi are steering China into the rocks.

That puzzled me too, as it is the closest airport to me. It used to do more passenger planes, but that has shifted to Sioux Falls and Omaha and SUX does a lot of cargo. Ironically, most people drive past SUX to get to OMA, plus the 185th air refueling wing often services/trains the 55th wing down at Offutt AFB. You can almost see "the fence" from the Flight 232 video from the interstate.

Took me an hour and a half to eat it at home, reclining in my Posturepedic bed. Recovery from the surgery is almost as bad as being sick and needing the surgery. At least I think I’m getting better. Don’t know if I’ll make it to choir practice Wednesday night, the sandwich shop experience doesn’t bode well. I’m two weeks behind the rest of the choir. 326 don't know if has been mentioned yet, but here's how the X got in LAX and PDX, and maybe a few others...

In the earliest days, probably the 20's, navigating to airports was by following radio signals, i.e., having a receiver that would point an indicator in the direction of the radio station you dialed in.

The early system to give the radio stations name identifiers was 2 digits. So, you got LA for Los Angeles and PD for Portland, OR.

2 digits quickly got used up, so the system changed to 3 digits. Thus, the X got added to LA and PD, cause I guess they didn't like any 3 letter options...

334 @JQ: A brother, that normally doesn't visit, and who seems to have shown "take advantage of family" tendencies suddenly wants to visit.

If you have full power of attorney over your husband's assets, use it to transfer them to your name exclusively so that when he eventually passes away, there's nothing to go through the probate process.

This solves, in advance, the problem of a surprise last minute will being drafted up by the spouse with "help" (read: fraud) of another family member (like this brother.)
