I have a theory about the wallet switch. Perhaps it just highlights my behavior. BUT, I hate switching wallets. I know what's in there. I know where it is. Most importantly, I don't want to have to pressure myself into streamlining things I really don't need in there, but need to keep somewhere. That just creates more decisions, that require consideration and thought about possible occurrences where that particular removed item might be necessary.
In other words, my wallet is just fine. Leave me alone. See, it still fits in my pocket and everything, and it only causes minor back pain. Mind your own business. Posted by: Orson at April 25, 2025 10:22 PM (dIske) 44

Was forced to use a kiosk to order a sandwich, employee retrieves bag, puts it on a shelf, says nothing. My phone beeps that my food is ready. I go show the message and number, clerk spins the paysystem around and that 30% minimum tip is staring at me. I aks if tips are shared with the cooks in the back.was told no. Even at Michelin star restaurants, a 20% tip is the starter. I think that one is either a truly bizarre exception or bullshit.
Another thing that drives me nuts with those iPad type cashier things is they always pop up a tip when you go to pay. If I'm at a bakery and all the person did was turn around and take a croissant off the shelf and hand it to me, you are not getting a tip. Posted by: keena at April 25, 2025 10:29 PM (QwK6F) 69
I tip generously, sometimes 25%, because when I was in college I worked as a waitress. But if I were given that demand for a tip, I would probably stop going to that restaurant. If tips aren't going to be voluntary, then do away with tipping, raise the servers' pay, and raise the price of the food.

There's always this confusion that happened after Covid when we thought we had to tip everyone because they were potentially risking their lives to hand us a sandwich off the shelf. This whole tipping thing came into effect and then I was kind of OK with it. But I read this thing where someone said if I am standing up when I order my meal, you are not getting a tip. I pretty much go by that. Except when I am at a sandwich place like Jersey Mike's, where all the young kids are really Cheerful and helpful and working their asses off. I no longer use a wallet, because it's too obvious. If I use something obvious like that, my 5 year old daughter WILL find it, and those cards WILL vanish. She has an obsession with my wallet.
I have no idea where the heap of cards and cash she's already pilfered is stashed, but I'm not dealing with it anymore. My cards now go in a shelf in the back bathroom I myself can barely reach. She doesn't know about it because I lock the room and just sneak in there to select needed cards, which I hide in my clothing til I return them. Took the whole crew over to a bar across the street Friday afternoon. We drank top shelf. Had to wave the waitress over every time we wanted something. In California, they started a sneaky little thing where they would add on a 6% "service charge "to help the workers with living costs. Then the state legislature actually mandated that this show up on the menu in a statement so you know going in. Well, good for them that was probably the only non-hare brained thing they've done in the past 10 years. So now there will be a small little statement on the bottom of the menu saying that. And yet they still ask you to tip them 20%.
This is all about the restaurant owners who don't have the balls to just raise the prices on the menu by 6% I know they've got it rough too, but for God sake stop trying to sneak all these extra charges in here. Does this happen in any other state besides California? Posted by: keena at April 25, 2025 10:38 PM (uz6ub) 101
>>> 93 The mandatory tip screen has a button for "Custom Tip." I'd investigate that and see how low an amount I could leave. Then I'd register my complaint, loudly enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear, and walk out for good.
I try to pay cash for meals out anyway, and leave a tip in cash even if I use a card. And actually, we've created a bad precedent in the US. . When we were in the Amalfi coast last summer, They all expect you to tip them. It's known that Americans tip. They will even ask for it. If it is not on the menu price, does that not constitute fraud, as it is a bait and switch? It is advertising one price (for the meal or whatever) then forcing you to pay more to cover their employee wages? Conversations about wallets and circumcision means I have to share:
There was once a rabbi who was never able to dispose of the foreskin after a bris- he just thought it disrespectful, so he kept them all in a jug. When the jar started getting full, he wondered if he could do anything useful with them, and the Ides came to him that maybe a leather worker could make something from them. So, off the the leather worker he goes with the jar, and is assured that the craftsman will, indeed, be able to make something of them. "Come back in a week, and you'll get your item." A week passes and he returns to the leather worker, who presents him with a brand new wallet. "Wait a second," said the rabbi. "That was an almost full gallon jug, and all I get from it is a wallet?" The leather worker looked at him and said, "Sir, all you have to do is rub it a few times and it grows into a briefcase." Posted by: tankdemon at April 25, 2025 10:44 PM (x/vdX) 129

I notice he doesn't detail whether the butter should be salted or unsalted.
Ive generally found no difference in baking between the two if the recipe also calls for salt. I made some Dominique Ansel peppermint buttercrunch on Easter. Amazing stuff. The recipe called for unsalted butter and then a small amount of salt. I did the math and the amount of salt called for was the amount of salt in the salted butter I used. If using unsalted butter in that recipe would have made it noticeably better, I dont think I want to know. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at April 25, 2025 11:02 PM (EXyHK) 182

My wallet story:
I knew me dear old Mum (pbuh) kept Dad's wallet when he passed. Just brought it home and put it in a drawer, like a little leather time capsule. Years later, my wallet fell apart and I asked Mom for Dad's wallet. She gave it to me. When I took his old cards and bits of paper out of the wallet to be replaced my mine, I found five crisp $100 bills. Mom was surprised. I read something for increasing your tip income years ago if you were had one of those pay apps. It was set the middle value higher because people tend to select that.
So if rude coffee barista wants 35% tip, they should have 20%, 35%, and 50% options and drop the mandatory BS. I have a very cheap co-worker. 15-20 years ago or so a bunch of us routinely walked to a coffee shop after the work cafeteria and get coffees. Mr Cheapo would pay with a check for $10 extra to have a bit of cash and still not leave a tip. Now that was rude as a customer. another angle to it: Shadeur being drafted #1 was the story that the sporting press really wanted to write. I mean they had a hardon for that story. That is didn't happen broke the spirits of many ink-stained wretches.

IMHO, the "standard" tip is still 15%. So, the cost of living has gone up? It has for all of us. The meal I got for 12 bucks a few years ago is now 20 bucks. So if I tip 15%, you're now getting 3 bucks instead of two. You're keeping up better than me.

Just got back from Walmart What have I missed?
Speaking of Walmart. Lately they have become quite aggressive with their demands to see my receipt before I can leave the building. I refuse to show it to them because I have zero contractual obligation to do that; Walmart is not Sam's Club or Costco. Additionally, every second I was shopping and checking out I was under intense surveillance; if they didn't have probable cause to think I was shoplifting before I paid for my goods I am of the opinion they can pound sand once I did. Am I out in left field here legally? It seems to be quite the grey area. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at April 26, 2025 12:55 AM (amnH6) 332
Well, if Virginia Giuffre had a deadman's switch, it might take time for the results to appear. The people holding the goods have to verify to their own satisfaction that she is in fact dead, and then find a way to disseminate the information without it being traced to them.

>> Who knows what they might do in the back next time?
I never worked in food service, but nearly everyone I know has in some capacity. So I’ve heard stories. It doesn’t matter what you tip, at some point in your life some guy has shoved the buns from your burger into his pants, or somebody spit in your coffee. Earning a reputation as a good tipper might help reduce the number of those incidents, but it won’t eliminate them. The guys in the back aren’t even seeing you, they’re just having fun. And there’s the indiscriminate stuff, like the 3-star restaurant where they throw live rats into the deep fryer? How can you avoid that? There are a few states where you must show a receipt at Walmart, but in most you can refuse. IANAL.
I always comply, very politely. Which is why they always ask me. Because I don’t look like the kind of person who’s going to say no or make a scene or actually be shoplifting. They gotta meet their quota somehow. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at April 26, 2025 01:04 AM (/dDa4) 340

Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at April 26, 2025 12:55 AM (amnH6) Well, WalMart has been hit hard by low-lifes committing scanner fraud at the self checkout. I don't blame them for trying to police it a bit. Usually, the guy or woman assigned that task recognizes me, and waves me through. Funny thing happened: I bought a few things last night there, Including one of those small pouches of white chicken chunks. Which slipped out of my sight between the panels of the shopping cart, and I failed to scan it. Got everything else, and paid for it. Found it when I got to the car. And I really, really had to go home and pee, so i didn't go back in the store. But what I will do is go back there, buy one more of those pouches, and scan it twice. That will square me up. Pakistan starts sending tanks, artillery and other heavy weapon systems toward the border with India @9mm_smg It's going to be wild if this escalates. Might be the first time since ww2 we see nukes go off. Conventional warfare wise, India destroys Pakistan. Bigger military, better equipment etc... But if Pakistan is suffering huge losses, they might just decide to go nuclear. India has a very defensive nuclear weapon policy where they wouldn't be a 1st strike, but they would retaliate massively. Oh, they’re evil, but they don’t want to rule over ashes. This is why nukes effectively ended war between large powers: they’re a weapon that can kill the old men responsible for making wars, guaranteeing they won’t be used. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at April 26, 2025 01:45 AM (w6EFb) I don’t think China’s suffering that much now because of the tariffs. Probably no worse than us. But, yeah, they were pretty poor in the recent past. Giving them favored nation status and the WTO was a big step for them. That said, they probably would have built up a lot on their own. The confluence of events that made China an industrial superpower wasn’t down to a single bad policy. It was decades of bad decisions compounding, and now we’re paying the long-overdue price. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at April 26, 2025 02:06 AM (/dDa4) 410
Things I've learned from that channel:
There's no welfare in China, so you need a kid to take care of you when you're old (not a bad thing in the US, either). There's a massive child kidnapping issue that China doesn't allow people to talk about. They're not all adopted to childless couples, of course. Trafficking for other reasons, just like here in the US. Despair and anger drives people to plow into crowds with cars, especially crowds of schoolchildren. It's very common, so they have bollards everywhere to discourage that. Problem is, the bollards are hollow because that's how China rolls. There's a lot of drug users. China gives fentanyl producers tax breaks while denying that any fentanyl is made in China. Theft is rampant. There are bars on ALL windows, even on the 32nd floor. Yes. people climb up that high. It's crazy. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at April 26, 2025 02:07 AM (w6EFb) 411

If a guy gets married and has a kid, his wife stops working. "Tradwife" never stopped there. Now, hubby is pulling one salary, and is responsible for seven people. Himself, his wife, all four of their parents, and the new kid. Gotta have a pretty swell job to pull that off. So the other side of the child trafficking is the families trying to do things "the right way," which leads to grandma and grandpa abandoning their identities and moving back to the sticks and living as beggars. Or just wandering into the wilderness to die. So their children can have children. Posted by: mikeski at April 26, 2025 02:30 AM (DgGvY) 428
