Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Media Claims That Trump Backs Tax Hike on Millionaires as Part of His "Big Beautiful Tax Bill;" Trump Says "No, I Don't"I don't know if this was a real trial balloon or just another completely fabricated Democrat op. Fox is claiming that "White House aides" floated the idea of creating a new highest income tax bracket for the wealthiest tax payers of something like 38%.Rep. Dan Meuser, a Pennsylvania Republican, is supporting the White House's proposed tax hike for people making more than $1 million. "I believe we must help the President deliver on his promise of a tax and regulatory plan that supports pro-American economic and manufacturing growth, and delivers for the vast majority of Americans -- while creating savings and promoting fiscal responsibility. Any adjustments in taxes to accomplish these goals should be considered," Meuser told Fox News Digital in a statement on Tuesday. Last week, White House aides began quietly floating a proposal to House Republicans that would raise the tax rate to 40% for Americans making more than $1 million, sources told Fox News Digital about the preliminary discussions. The plan would shore up income to fund President Donald Trump's ambitious campaign promises to eliminate taxes on overtime, tips and Social Security. On Thursday, Meuser said on "Mornings with Maria" that he suggested a less than 2% tax hike for the "wealthy, high-end income" tax bracket months ago. He noted that Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowered the top tax rate from 39.6% to 37%, so raising it to 38.6% would still keep it below the pre-TCJA level by nearly one percentage point.I don't know if support that or oppose it. I'm always against taxing "The rich" more, as they already pay the bulk of taxes. But then, the rich keep voting for Democrats and keep voting against America and against American citizens, so sometimes I think: You want Democrat levels of taxation? You got it. But we don't have to have this debate because Trump says he doesn't back any increases in taxes for any American citizen. President Donald Trump appeared to rule out a proposal to raise taxes on millionaires, arguing they would flee the country over the policy. "I think it would be very disruptive because a lot of millionaires would leave the country," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on April 23. "You'll lose a lot of money if you do that." Trump allies such as Steve Bannon have supported raising taxes on the rich, but the president hadn't taken a position. Trump has suggested tariffs could potentially replace the income tax, even though economists warn that tariffs raise far less revenue and fall harder on lower-income households. Some of you young readers may, like myself, not remember the Reagan Administration, because all of us 29-year-olds weren't born back then and wouldn't be born until the year 2000 or whatever. But the Reagan White House, especially in its first few years, was a place of intrigue, as different factions attempted to hijack the Reagan agenda for themselves. Back then, it was mostly left-leaning Rockefeller Republicans who were attempting to restrain and contain Reagan and do some unauthorized policy freelancing. The same thing is going on in the Trump White House, but there are fewer liberal Republicans, of course. It's a fight between Disruptors and Gradualists, the softer MAGA types who want change but who cringe at the thought of actually burning everything down. And while I get the idea of punishing the rich, who largely don't vote with us any more, I'm a little concerned about where all of this ends up. Do we want to drive away all old-school Republicans? Do we really want to completely swap the old Republican base for the old Democrat base? That does seem to be the plan pushed by some. But you know, as much as I get frustrated with scaredy-cat, smugly complacent old Republican base, I never loved the Democrat base all that much, either, and I'm not looking forward to the kinds of soft socialist policies we'd wind up pursuing if the party because majority working class Democrat. I feel the exact same way about taxing the millionaires. But I don't think this is the time to let them have it. Trump shouldn't increase taxes on anyone. The time to do it is the next time the Democrats have power. Democrats are always screeching about taxing the rich, but at the same time they wink at their multi-millionaire buddies and say don't worry, the GOP will never let it happen. So we get the worst of both worlds: we are seen as the plutocrats protecting the rich, while at the same time we are really just helping Democrats. Let the Democrats raise taxes on their rich buddies, don't be the one to do it.

Remember that when the income tax was passed it was only meant to address a few wealthy people. Do you really trust Congress with this? I don’t. Ever. It will be corrupted for generations.
Johnson was right on this. We are not the party of higher taxes. This is antithetical to the entire MAGA movement which Trump mused a few short months ago would eliminate the income tax altogether. The current highest bracket is 37%. That is a lot of money to take. Maybe I am old school, but I don’t think the rich need to be punished. I think people should make as much money as they can- me included- and I don’t fault anyone for earning more than I do. Good for them! May I be just like them (bank account wise) one day soon.

I have reached the conclusion that Trump is smarter and tougher than I thought he was the first time around. He is triangulating a lot of this stuff. A lot of what he does, says, tweets, is positioning for where he wants to end up. His cabinet is designed to maximize their ability to sell on tv his agenda. He's faced a lot of lawmakers so far, but is still winning in polling. Effecting actual change is harder. Border is closed mostly. Getting rid of the Kilmars is going to be more difficult unless he can radically disincentivize their staying here and they self deport. They are gang bangers however and follow orders.

I’m still proponent of the Flat tax.
In regard to a consumption tax I always think back to Sam Walton and his old truck and middle class ranch style house. I would be paying more tax than he would. We also saw what the luxury tax increase did. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at April 24, 2025 03:29 PM (VofaG) I have a better idea, a direct tax like income or sales changes the relationship of the people to its government from one of "need their support and votes" to "tax cattle", so the best way to both fund the government and get it to the point that it works to diminish chaos, violence and increases protections on all levels, lets move to a general flat-excise on imports. Say, 10% on all trading partners unless they are being shitheels about things. Posted by: Kindltot at April 24, 2025 03:37 PM (D7oie) 86

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at April 24, 2025 03:37 PM (VofaG) They're not really "loopholes." It's just how you structure your money. If you're Elon Musk rich, you can decide to pay yourself $50k a year and pay almost no taxes. You run all of your major lifestyle things (security, private jet, etc.) through one of your many businesses (where they are now considered a deductible expense, not income), and if you want to buy a new yacht or spend money on something that clearly isn't a business expense, you walk down to Chase bank and take out a loan against your shares in Twitter, buy whatever you want, and pay the back from your $50k salary. No income there either. None of those are loopholes, it's just ... how you structure your money / income. Taxing a group because "they keep voting for Democrats" is not a good reason.
High income tax on the rich just leads to more shelters and avoidance. They will not pay it. Artie Laffer instructs that 38% is too high and will increase distortion and decrease compliance. I don't know if support that or oppose it. I'm always against taxing "The rich" more, as they already pay the bulk of taxes.
But then, the rich keep voting for Democrats and keep voting against America and against American citizens, so sometimes I think: You want Democrat levels of taxation? You got it. The idle rich are mostly Democrats, the new rich (small business owners ) are mostly Republicans. So generally income taxes hit Republicans more since they have companies making, well, income. Democrats have their money in various tax hedges that was originally earned years ago so a general wealth taxes scares them. Not that I am endorsing any tax increase here - but specifically income taxes are something we should generally oppose. Now...mortgage cap deductions? Hell yeah. I don't see this administration adding any new taxes for anyone...least of all those parties that represent the ownership class. The whole basis of the Trump economic approach is to revitalize industry within the country. You're not going to penalize the people that can make that happen.
Such a taxation limit expansion, diversification and start ups. That in turn would limit employment to make those potential entities a reality. And, thus would lower consumer confidence, which I will argue is likely one of the most important factors in a healthy country, and successful one. 6 I feel the exact same way about taxing the millionaires.

I live in a state without state income tax for a reason. But I pay plenty in federal taxes because the cost of living is astronomical here compared to the Lower 48. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at April 24, 2025 03:53 PM (/dDa4) I'm not pretending it can't be reformed, I'm just saying it's not as simple as closing up some loopholes. I'm not a tax lawyer, but obviously I'm exposed to it a bit. And it is super complicated. Especially on the business tax side. And it kind of has to be. We tax the profit, not the revenue. Which is why the tax code is so big -- lots of arguments over what is profit and what is not profit. It incentivizes wasteful behaviors. So if you pay yourself $100k, the IRS doesn't care if you spend it on hookers and blow or if you buy a new car. But if a business spends $100k, where the money went matters. Something no one brings up is that a VAT is equivalent to a tariff.
I wonder why no one talks about this. VAT puts all the tax on the product. So by having 25% VAT, other taxes are avoided. The US has no VAT, so our products include that tax burden. Then when EU product is sold overseas -- no VAT so it is not burdened with tax. When US products are sold in EU, they include the US tax burden plus VAT. It is like EU has a 25% tariff and a 25% export subsidy. I simplified, but this is the effect. Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at April 24, 2025 03:59 PM (06XVj) 200

President Trump wants no taxes on people making under X dollars. Money which would help blunt if not eliminate the pain of tariffs. Naturally, letting Americans keep their money is something DC cannot abide so, they're trying to see if they can adjust their sights on another target which is easily vilified. Alexander S. Vindman @AVindman Trump is a Russian Asset. This is the way the Russian security and intelligence services categorize him according to their oecessarily need to be a witting assets to be run as such. Trump meets two criteria to qualify as a Russian asset. Trump is both a useful idiot because he is easily manipulated to serve Putin… look at Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine to capitulate on the mirage of deals, economic cooperation, reducing the imaginary risk of WWIIIaying to Trump’s vanity and ego as a deal maker and on ignorance driven fears [other example are buying Russia’s narrative of NATO aggression]; and Trump is a fellow traveler. Trump sees the world much like Putin. The strong must pray on the weak. The strong are entitled to coerce small states to squeeze deals. Again the Russian describe these features of Trump in state-run media and official channels. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Soldier of the Persistence at April 24, 2025 04:05 PM (L/fGl) 230

The problem with flat to zero (flat tax on all income) is that people on the low end just avoid it -- it creates an underground economy.
I also think all tax is theft, but I am OK with tax of 10% on everything. (income, cap gains (with indexing), inheritance, ...) So a hard limit (10%, but no tax under 100K) does not work either since you have everyone making 99K and you need to avoid hard barriers. Then you end up with a schedule such as 0 at 50K, 2% at 60K, etc. You see where this goes? Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at April 24, 2025 04:09 PM (06XVj) 248

I would like to see no individual federal taxes at all: tax the states. Let states try different ways of getting the money.
Any federal tax on individuals suffers from the problem of how to define what it is that weve decided is taxable (sales tax? whats a sale? profits? whats a profit? income tax? whats income?) which are not questions that can reliably be answered on a national scale. Instead of having to process hundreds of millions of taxpayers, the federal government has to process fifty. Tariffs are just based on our trade deficit with a country. It’s a linear formula. So it kinda-sorta incorporates VAT and other barriers, but not directly.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director ------ OK, but this is the kind of thing that should be shouted every time anyone brings up "smoot haulie gonna cause depression" nonsense when attacking his tariffs. Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at April 24, 2025 04:22 PM (06XVj) 310

Macroeconomics and particularly international economics is using stats and math to hide the fact that empirical models do not predict reality very well. Sort of like climate change models. In the end, when such models are presented, all they do is reflect the underlying assumptions (nice way of saying biases) of their proponents.
Posted by: DNC at April 24, 2025 04:21 PM (ctrM5) In my ECON 101 under Carter they taught me that inflation and unemployment could not occur at the same time. Carter had records highs in both. I therefore determined that Economics was full of shit. Later on my own I read a number of books on the subject, including Mises' one, but it was like a medical class teaching imbalances in the humours. A third peeve I have is that the true rate of inflation is about 3% higher than anyone calculates it.
The CW is that we need to keep injecting money into economy as it grows. Well, what nonsense. That is gov. stealing the value of progress from the public. Reality is deflationary and your dollar should buy more each day. that fact that it doesn't is because of theft. We have accepted that gov. is allowed to steal that 3%, plus the 3% target, plus the 10 or whatever percent inflation really is. fourth peeve is GDP should not include gov. spending, but Musk mentioned that a couple weeks ago. A Pakistani navy sub sank an Indian ship during the Bangladesh war . I'm sure the Indians would like payback and the Pakistanis would like to do it again Posted by: Smell the Glove at April 24, 2025 04:12 PM (6TePA) They got payback before the war was over, the Indians sank about half the Paki Navy. Not to mention having the genocidal Paki Army in Bangladesh surrender nearly 100k troops after they got spanked. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at April 24, 2025 04:28 PM (y9nCu) 323
293 I would like to see no individual federal taxes at all: tax the states. Let states try different ways of getting the money.
Any federal tax on individuals suffers from the problem of how to define what it is that we’ve decided is taxable (sales tax? what’s a sale? profits? what’s a profit? income tax? what’s income?) which are not questions that can reliably be answered on a national scale. Instead of having to process hundreds of millions of taxpayers, the federal government has to process fifty. The rest of the process is broken down to more local entities, at most at the level of the state. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair You have two choices on direct taxes--either the income tax via amendment or the apportioned tax on states. Constitutionally, for apportionment, a tax must be the same amount per person in every state, a very difficult burden to satisfy. " The reality is that when that was used to fund the articles of confederation, it did not work very well. What do you do about a deadbeat state? Invade it? Deny its ability to vote (not constitutional per se)? Take all its federal funds away? There is a reason that the Framers ended up choosing indirect taxes.
