A Blessed Wednesday Cafe

wolfinducksclothing.jpg
The Infiltrator

Speaking of blessings: I really wanted to take a break after the election, but then I thought that I, much like my hero Rachel Maddow, should be on call for the first 100 days of the Trump Administration, Redux.

April 30, Wednesday, is Trump's 100th day. Close enough!

The kind-hearted cobloggers have agreed to take over the blog next week, Monday through Friday.

So I'll be taking the week off, and leaving you in their strong yet tender hands.

Dog invades feline spaces. Good!

Taking a dog to get his picture taken.

A week ago I linked videos of very realistic latex masks that look straight out of Mission: Impossible. Some commenters wondered if the masks were real or just CGI trickery like you see in the actual Mission: Impossible movies. Not only are they real, but they have already been used in bank robberies -- a young man wore a realistic mask of a decrepit old man, nearly as decrepit at Joe Biden, and has evaded capture to this day. Apparently people realized he was wearing a mask when they saw this ancient Bidenesque figure running away from a robbery at full tilt like a college athlete.

They're expensive -- like $2000 or $3000 -- but that's very cheap if you want to do major crimes or other deceptions.

Little brother photobombs her attempt to become Internet Famous and steals the spotlight. (It's old.)

Boxer raises his human baby brother.

The inner workings of an escalator are just as scary as I thought they were when I was 8. (I broke my foot when I was eight and had to get along with crutches and a foot in a boot-cast. I was very scared that I wouldn't be able to step on to an escalator properly -- I thought I'd slip and it would drag me under or something -- which is this faint anxiety I've had ever since.)

A tornado hits Texas as construction workers grip the roof of the building they're working on to keep from being blown away.

Rambunctious cat wants chill dog to play.

This cat has hypnotized me with his crazyeyes.

Boxer enjoys the movie.

In our Frigidaire—
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there—
That polary bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

Dogs need kids.

When we lived in Ohio, a young couple moved in next door (both properties were on acreage). One late afternoon their kids were running around screaming and playing, their Shelties chasing and barking. I was working near the fence and the father apologized for the racket. "That's what they should be doing," I replied.

95 Since retirement, I have been wifing and farming up a storm. It is a marvelous thing to have all the actual work done during the day so we both have evenings and weekends for leisure. I have the greenhouse up and running, most of the tomatoes potted, along with most of the peppers. Cucumbers start next week. The following week I will prepare the various outside beds, which look to need a heck of a lot of work. I had eye surgery last Friday which is slowing me down a bit, but it is so nice to be able to have that without worrying about how much leave I have, who is covering what projects, etc. I think my blood pressure has dropped dramatically. And it has only been three weeks. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I don't know if it is snake oil, but I have been rubbing Junior's Bedtime Lotion on DH's feet at night. It has magnesium, which appears to be the active ingredient. Greasy as hell, but it smells nice, like lavender. It seems to work to get him to sleep. He usually takes 45 minutes to conk out but this appears to make that time shorter.

Or he's just more tired recently.

I really don't understand how rubbing stuff on the bottom of your feet affects your sleep cycle, but if it works, I guess I will keep doing it.

DH still remembers a little town in upstate WI where he stopped at a gas station on his way to Green Bay for a football game. Apparently it was the best shit he's ever had, and he waxes poetic about it on occasion. I'm assuming this is a guy thing and I mostly let it go, but FFS.

Of course, he is also a fart virtuoso, so I suppose all those things go together.

To this I will add that traditionally, Holy Communion is taken kneeling, and on the tongue, not handled by "extraordinary ministers" or the faithful. The Body and Blood of Our Lord is only handled by consecrated hands, and even then, only the thumb and forefinger. We don't piss around with this stuff.

You will see, even in fluffy new-agey parishes, some folks who will skip the line for the "extraordinary minister" pantsuited lady and head straight for the Priest, because his hands are consecrated. The movement to reverence is growing all of the time.

You will also see ladies wearing veils or hats to cover their heads. That's a whole other discussion, but suffice it to say, women who do so know who they are and why God made them.

There's a wealth of proverbs about Vrykolakas, and plenty of old chestnuts about Dziwożonas, and the occasional warning about Baba Yaga or Moldavians. Especially Moldavians - never, never, never trust a Moldavian. They will steal your butter if they have the opportunity, and ensnare you in elaborate pyramid schemes involving Carpathian mountain goats...where was I? Oh, yes - Ace, enjoy a most-merited time off. And check the make on those shelves - Moldavians have a track record of interior decorative swindles, and they are also known to impersonate the Amish and Southern Baptists. Not that the last part of that is relevant, but it is good to be forewarned.

I’m still relatively young so I kneel. I prefer the solid ground to the kneeler which makes my back spasm.

I should dress up more. It bothers me people don’t do that much anymore. And if they do, it’s often the young women, who are dressed inappropriately for church.

I travel to some parishes where nobody kneels for the Eucharist, so I don’t. It’s not about me, so better to go with the flow.

175 Standing on the tongue is fine, too, if you can’t kneel. Standing is actually the second-most reverent posture, after kneeling.

__________

Except for Communion and genuflections, I no longer kneel. Between my back and knees, it's become too distractingly uncomfortable. It's also why I sit in the back. I figure that the Mystical Body of Christ is doing the kneeling for me. I also wear a coat and tie so that the other guys don't have to..

Father Juan Ochoa, who directs the archdiocesan Office for Divine Worship, has been watching the numbers closely and told CNA he didn’t expect the surge.

“We usually see a 10% increase from the year before,” he said. “This year, it was about 45%. That’s significant.”

217 I'm pretty sure my IQ was higher when I was younger. I guess it depends what sort of questions are asked on one these days. I certainly can't do Calculus or Differential Equations any more, and who knows what sort of history questions are asked (if any).

If they still do the tests like the old PSAT/SAT tests were done, where you where tested on your ability to suss out answers based on deductive reasoning, I might not do too badly, but I just don't remember as much as I used to in my prime.

I did get knocked down a LOT of pegs when I entered college, though - I was my class valedictorian (and made sure everyone knew it). As near as I can tell, magnesium is more effectively absorbed through the skin than it is through the intestines.

It makes your muscles and tendons less sore. I don't know why, but that's why it's a good thing to take after a day of unusual physical activity. It'll make you less stiff and sore in the morning.

And less soreness in muscles and tendons makes you sleep better.

My knocking down after a long string of firsts in my class occurred in graduate school. It was a real eye opener and ego deflator. But, still and all, I wasn't less smart, but I knew (and had known beforehand) that I was going to take my training and expertise into the private sector and not academia. And to operate in that realm required a level of intelligence that those intending to stay in academia did not possess.

Eventually I had to settle down and at least for a while eat, sleep, dream physics. When I got to that point things went well for me. My colleagues in the department where I wound up working always complimented me on how well rounded my training had been. I had managed to train a little in almost all areas of physics. Jack of all trades but master of none, perhaps. But I did a good bit of work in my day.
