Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Overnight Open Thread - April 21, 2025 [Doof]![]() Don't Look Down! China to Inaugurate New World’s Highest Bridge ![]() The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge spanning 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the Beipan River, in China’s Guizhou Province, is set to become the world’s highest bridge upon completion, in the second half of 2025. The mountainous province of Guizhou is well-known for its complex terrain and the incredible bridges traversing it. Guizhou is home to more than half of the world’s top 100 highest bridges and has set the record for the world’s highest bridge more than once. This year, the Chinese province will once again claim the record for the third consecutive time! The first was in 2003 when the Beipanjiang Guanxing Bridge became the first suspension bridge in the world to surpass the 1,000-foot height threshold. The second time was in 2016, with the innovative Beipanjiang Duge Bridge, and this year, it’s doing it again with a bridge over the deepest part of the Beipan River Valley, a place known as the Huajiang Grand Canyon, or the ‘Earth Crack’. “At present, the overall progress of the bridge has reached 95%, and it is planned to be opened to traffic in the second half of 2025,” Zhang Shenglin, chief engineer of Guizhou Highway Group, boasted in an interview with China Daily. “By then, this super project that spans the ‘Earth Crack’ will be the world’s first in both directions. It will become another landmark project to demonstrate China’s infrastructure strength.”More details including a 21 minute video at the link. Tonight (April 21st-22nd) is the Lyrid meteor shower that produces anywhere between 10 and 100 shooting stars per hour. They’re also one of the best for Americans since the point in the sky they seem to originate from is located far in the north of the night sky in the constellation Lyra. Those in the Southern Hemisphere won’t have as much northern sky in their view, but citizens of the US and Europe will have excellent viewing of this meteor stream. Though the Earth passed into the Lyrid meteor stream on the 16th of April, tonight is what’s called the peak, when the largest number of shooting stars can be seen. *** Though Earth passes through these meteor streams around the same time every year, the Moon’s phases are less consistent. As it happens this year, a waning crescent will fall below the horizon at 01:35 UTC [9:35 East Coast USA] meaning there will be no light pollution from the pale lady.Get on out there and let us know if you see anything! Future Morons! First candidates

I don't remember what his age was, but my dad was definitely too young - barely see over the steering wheel age when he took the family wagon for a drive.
His older sister had run into a glass storm door, which shattered and sliced her arm. Dad put her in the station wagon and headed on down the road. Cop spotted him and started to pull him over. Dad held up his sister's profusely bleeding arm. He got a police escort to the hospital. O'course, back in the day, we learned to drive on the farm tractor and (in my day) go-karts, not from YouTube. Kinda funny that Chevy Chase’s career died because everyone who ever worked with him despised him. It wasn’t political and didn’t have anything to do with ideology or beliefs - it’s just that everyone, liberal, conservative or whatever agreed that Chase was a total dick to everyone around him 100% of the time. Eventually no one would work with him in anything.
And it always amazed me that out of the original SNL cast, Bill Murray ended up having the greatest movie career of them all. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 21, 2025 11:04 PM (ZEzFB) 171

Of course, being Catholic, I can't wish anything bad for him, but I do believe in God's justice, just as I pray for God's mercy. Still can't figure out the gay marriage thing he had going, or the nonsense about how horrible the hierarchy is even though he was the head of it all. Anyway.. I’m not particularly bothered by him.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at April 21, 2025 10:52 PM (l3YAf) Two things he did that I cannot forgive, even though I'm supposed to. 1. He let the Churches close over covid. He denied us the sacraments, showing that he did NOT believe in Christ but in men. 2. He took away the Mass of the ages, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in Latin, that has nurtured the saints through the ages, because he thinks somehow that everyone using the same language for the same Mass is divisive. It isn't. He just didn't like it. I don't think he gets to make that decision, but he called us who support Latin Mass a bunch of nasty names without even hearing us out. The next pope can post a win by getting rid of that nonsense. You aren't really a Pope if you deny Tradition. It is one of the pillars of the Church. She turned off a "how to" movie on giving lap dances, which really should have been a "run now" moment. Regardless, our discussion is going fine, but we hear other people in the house. Suddenly someone starts coming downstairs, and our host yells out "I've got company so put on some clothes!" Footsteps stop then retreat. Pope Francis blessed a pagan statue, Pachamama, in the Vatican Gardens. I have no idea what purpose is served by nodding to every pagan or heretical tradition. Do you or do you not believe that Jesus Christ founded your Church, and do you or do you not believe that He did not make a mistake in doing so? If you think he was in error, by all means, follow your heart, but don't become Pope and then decide you aren't actually Catholic. Doesn't really work in anyone's benefit. But lots of people like to say they are Catholic and then explain how they would "fix" Catholicism. Therein lies the problem. If you leave, nobody will pay attention to you as you try to remake God's Church into your own image. I should think that after 2,000 years or so, the rules would be pretty well thought out and you could just agree or get gpne. So the "Second death" is eternal separation from God, the source of Life. And some people want that! They don't want to live the kind of rules and life God requires; so they don't have to. I like the Latin mass, and I want to move towards it again, but I understand why the change was made. Vatican II made some interesting choices. I think some are reversing, but it was a discussion that needed to happen. And Francis wasn’t exceptional there. The Latin Mass is still around here. It’s more popular than it has been since the start of Vatican II. If anything, he led a revival of it. Maybe God uses people in odd ways to accomplish his goals. As for Covid, I agree. It was a horrible decision. Jesus left His Church to humans, knowing we’d mess up again and again. Look at the Disciples: forever falling short, but still trying. Francis was flawed. The sin of our age is narcissism: being in love of our reflection from social media. Maybe that was his flaw. um. rotting and molding is what composting is.
I have a standard compost bin I made from woven wire, and that one gets pretty much everything through the summer, and I have an old bathtub up on cinderblocks that I put kitchen scraps (vegetable peelings and the like) and dirt and weeds, and I dump my dish-washing water into. It has massive numbers of worms, and the water and leachate comes out the drain hole and runs into a 5 gallon bucket. I pour that on plants and on my fruit tree seedlings. It doesn't take a 2x4 upside the head to see what wretched losers we all are. I pray for actual men to lead, men with chests and spines, who know what sin looks like and hate it. Nobody is perfect but Our Lord, but there are many who can come very close to that by being what God made them. We really don't need a doormat to "lead." I had a good friend who’d been a marine on Okinawa in the 70’s, didn’t marry a stripper but let one move in with him. He said it ended one night when she was home and he stayed out drinking til about 3 or so. He said he didn’t blame her for being startled when he came in through the side door loudly, and he didn’t blame for pulling out the pistol and cocking it when he was banging around looking for the light switch. No, he understood all that. What got to him was when the lights got turned on and he said “look it’s me!” , she kept the gun on him, saying nothing for way too long, and he could see the calculations going on in her head. (Luckily for him she finally said “oh I thought it was someone breaking in.” - but he knew what almost went down. She was out that day.

Has anyone been on the newish I-49 extension north of Shreveport? The interchange going northbound from the loop around Shreveport is not too bad, but southbound it gives me the heebie-jeebies. It’s all up in the air, and let’s you look over to see the drop what with the banking they’ve got. Some years ago, when my wife was still living, we drove up that way on the way to Tulsa to visit relatives. We had been anticipating the then new extension of I-49. Northbound it was not too bad, but southbound on the return trip it was my wife’s turn to drive, but when she saw the interchange, she pulled over and refused to drive. Nothing for it but change places and I drove us through. I set the cruise control for 45 mph, the stated speed on the interchange, and did my best to just look straight ahead and concentrate on staying in the middle of the lane. I swear my adrenaline shot off three times on the short length of the interchange! Later I looked it up up on the LADOT website and they were featuring the interchange in a video, proud as can be!

No idea how the theology holds up, but an amusing book series is "Saint Tommy, NYPD" by Declann Finn. Tommy is an unassuming, church-going detective, who discovers he is a saint and has to fight the demons of Hell.
One of the characters in the series is the new African Pope, who frequently smites Cardinals and Bishops with his staff when he discovers they are not Catholic enough, if not downright corrupted. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at April 22, 2025 12:13 AM (zBOWZ) 274

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.
46 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high of 74 predicted. I mentioned last week that I was changing my work hours to start at 4.30am, rather than 5.30am, in order to get a jump on leftover work. So it begins. Will see you all on the Morning Report. There's a clip of him bowing down to Rothchild, Kissinger, and Rockefeller. Another of him slapping a commoner's hand away.
Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 21, 2025 11:30 PM (EJQ63) IIRC, that 'commoner' was trying to kiss the Pope's hand, a traditional sign of respect. Frankie Fabulous openly slapped it away because - he later lamely explained - he was only a man and didn't believe in that sort of idolatry. Which, IMO, only makes it worse; if someone wishes to pay their respects to the Vicar of Christ, you let them do it, so long as it is in a respectful way. Openly dissing the person and then smugly lecturing about how humble you are is just public preening.
