Top Story

  • Discord is deploying age verification systems recently made mandatory in fascist dystopias. (Soap Central)

    Like Britain. And Australia.

Fortunately they're being a lot more sensible about this than the governments that enforced the rules. The verification pops up - once - when you want to see adult content.

Which is not something I want from Discord, ever, so I don't see this as a huge problem. And you can pass the verification check with a face scan by the app and not have to upload government ID.

Tech News

  • Looks like there will be a 32GB variant of AMD's Radeon 9070 XT after all... Sort of. (Tom's Hardware)

AMD denied this a bit too strenuously. Looks like the 32GB model is for the Radeon Pro range, for workstation users and not gamers. It is the same card otherwise, though the clock speeds and power consumption will likely be trimmed back a little to make it more acceptable in an office environment.

  • It's a four-inch cube and it's blue, but it doesn't say Cobalt on it. (Liliputing)

The Beelink Me Mini supports six M.2 drives, two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, three USB ports, and one HDMI. And an internal power supply so you don't have an inconvenient brick hanging off it.

Also available in white and gray. Or will be available. Price and shipping date TBA.

CPU is an Intel N200 which is a four core Atom CPU and delivers adequate performance for a NAS and only uses 6W of power.

  • Resist eggheads! (Ars Technica)

Ars Technica has noticed that people have finally woken up to the communist takeover of the education system and is desperate to put them to sleep again, by force if necessary.

  • Chinese APT IronHusky deploys updated MysterySnail RAT on Russia. (HackRead)

The Cold War proceeds apace, just now being fought between the Chinese and the Soviets.

11 Update:

My wife Linda passed in comfort under the good drugs two nights ago. I thought we had more time. Alas. This is the start of the first full day when I know she is gone. Lots to do.

I credit the prayers of the Horde with keeping her here until we said the words we needed to say. You are all a part of that powerful force. You have my heartfelt thanks.

47 A "mild" 72 F. here, humid, light winds from the SE, so halfway decent workout conditions. We went to Shoney's yesterday for the breakfast buffet, and lemme tell ya, friends and neighbors, bring lotsa cash. It was $17 a person! I should have let Miss Linda order one buffet, and had myself a smaller meal from the menu. Not only did I eat more (though good stuff) than I should have, but I was useless and logy for the rest of the day.

We could have gone to our regular grill and I'd have gotten us fed for $25 instead of nearly $50. When did Shoneys become a place with (semi-)premium prices?

Good morning, Hordians.

Today, for the first time in heaven knows how long, I have nothing to do today. My time, apart from taking care of the dogs, is my own.

I pretend I'm still a scientist by doing patent searches for a search firm on the West Coast. They send me assignments, I do the search and send a report. I rarely hear what's thought of them but I continue to get work so they must not be too dissatisfied.

Over the last couple of months, a big oil company has requested a good many of these searches, with a budget limit of six hours of my time. I assure you, they take more than six hours. The most recent turned up 139 hits, all of which had to be read to see which ones had only molybdenum as the hydrodeoxygenation catalyst in less than 5% concentration on a support with mean pore diameter greater than 12 nm. Then I have to provide an analysis and write up the report, with all the niggling hierarchy of the patent classifications searched.

Sent the report off last night. Now I have nothing - sweet nothing - to do today. Her Majesty is out of town until next week. Maybe I'll go for a drive.

62 Today, like Hadrian, I have nothing important to do. Oh, I could run out and get some paper towels at Dollar Tree, and some canned chow for the furry thugs at Petco (oddly, their canned Friskies offerings are the same price as Walmart's!). But I don't *need* to. Time to sit at the computer and noodle around some notes for writing.

Wed. I get my SS check, so then I'll hit the grocery, pick up the repaired lamp, and get a mouse recharging cable at the computer repair store. Turns out the cable I use for my phone and the one for my LED flashlights don't fit the Apple mouse. It's nice not having wires running from keyboard and mouse to the computer -- but that means I have to keep both powered.

133 The very name of the celebration — Pascha — is the Greek and Latin word for Passover. To this day, most Christians around the world — Eastern Orthodox, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, and many others — still call it Pascha or a local derivative (i.e., Pascua de Resurrección in Spanish, Pâques in French, Pasqua in Italian, Paşti in Romanian, Paskha in Russian).

The English word “Easter” is an historical outlier, not the norm.

In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court is-
sued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without
giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing
from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the
application, with dubious factual support for its order, and
without providing any explanation for its order.

I refused
to join the Court's order because we had no good reason to
think that, under the circumstances, issuing an order at
midnight was necessary or appropriate.

Both the Executive and the Judiciary have an obligation
to follow the law.

The Executive must proceed under the terms of our order in Trump v. J. G. G., 604 U. S.. (2025) (per curiam), and this Court should follow established pro-
cedures.
