The Left puts a heavy burden on David Brooks

It's not easy being the "conservative" opinion writer at the New York Times. A few days ago, the very model of genteel elitism wrote this:

Mike at Chicago Boyz has written a great piece which puts Brooks' call to revolt in context - The BoBo Manifesto:

“I’m really not a movement guy. I don’t naturally march in demonstrations or attend rallies that I’m not covering as a journalist. But this is what America needs right now. Trump is shackling the greatest institutions in American life. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” – David Brooks
RIP David Brooks. He is not dead, but after that quote his career sure is.
Before there were “Never Trumpers” there was David Brooks.

If you listen closely, you can decipher that a major part of the media’s discourse is about why the Republicans cannot be more like David. He’s their type of guy.
Brooks has been playing this game for 25 years, from his book “Bobos in Paradise” to being Safire’s replacement as the house conservative on the NY Times Op-Ed page, to his shtick of being the ideological counterweight to E.J. Dionne on PBS. If Thomas Friedman can claim to know the Arab Street by talking with his taxi driver, then for those who follow the NY Times and PBS Brooks is the guy driving the conservative taxi. Clean, articulate, and reasonable as evidenced by willingness to go with the flow even when it is a riptide carrying oneself out to sea

What did Brooks' friends on the Left do to the cornerstones of Western Civilization when they had all the power?

He wants an uprising? Sounds like insurrection to me. Then again, if you think law firms, nonprofits, and civil servants are the cornerstones of Western civilization you have bigger problems than Donald Trump.

A final quote:

"So far, the only real hint of something larger - - a mass countermovement - - has been the rallies led by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But this, too, is an ineffective way to respond to Trump; those partisan rallies make this fight seem like a normal contest between Democrats and Republicans. What is happening now is not normal politics. We're seeing an assault on the fundamental institutions of our civic life, things we should all swear loyalty to - - Democrat, independent or Republican."
Leave aside that he is favorably citing two socialists, adherents to the most evil force of the 20th Century and antithetical to any part of the American founding. Leave aside that he invokes Marxist symbols. Instead focus on the fact that he neatly summarizes, as only David Brooks can, the current position of the Left: that one swears loyalty to "institutions" and not the Constitution.

Thanks for playing, David. Goodbye.

The whole piece has some memorable details from Brooks' career that add to the feeling that now it is over. I recommend it. Ace also posted an interesting Peek at the NY Times Elite Writers (9/15/23) that includes some great Fisking. It should have helped kill a career or two.

BUT WAIT:

My fire-breathing lefty contact on social media just posted a short excerpt from the very latest piece by Brooks, providing hope that the Left will continue to support him as they try to convince Republicans to be like him:

Trump’s behavior has aroused great moral indignation. It has aroused in people’s hearts a sense that something sacred is being trampled here — democracy, rule of law, intellectual freedom, compassion, pluralism and global exchange. These things are worth fighting for. Trump’s opponents have still not produced the kind of one-sentence mission statement that he produces — that the elites have betrayed us, so we must destroy them. But I think more people are realizing that we are the beneficiaries of a precious inheritance. Our ancestors bequeathed to us a judicial system, great universities, compassionate aid organizations, great companies and scientific genius. My mission statement would be: America is great, and we will fight for what has made America great.

I see some "conservative" and even "MAGA" words in there, along with an unhealthy obsession with "elites".

Somehow I am not inspired by the guy who has been saying that all Republicans are irredeemable to follow Brooks into the arms of AOC and Bernie Sanders. Do you think that the NYT will find Brooks' argument persuasive to "the other side"?

And yet no other Republican president in your lifetime got this treatment. Certainly not Bush. And both Obama and Bush deported a lot of illegals.

What Trump's team has done with destroying things like USAID and Global Engagement Center will have far bigger impact than is being noticed. ActBlue is now under investigation for funneling millions in illegal campaign dollars to Democrats. And the list goes on and on.

The left is right to be freaking out. Trump isn't just deporting illegals, he is destroying the corrupt infrastructure that allowed the left to gain power. And they know it.

If you want to talk fertilizer, at least mix in cottonseed meal, kelp meal and fish bone meal for a longer release. Add in a teaspoon of Epsoms salt and Boraxo and Iron- and maybe some Zinc Sulfate too.
If you have clay soil, don't use dolomite, use lime or ground oystershell, it will keep the clay from getting stickier.

157 Had a CT scan yesterday - should know more on Monday when I meet with my oncology surgeon to figure out what is next. I will be seeing my oncologist on Tuesday, and we will talk some more. Both of my doctors work closely together at UTSW in Dallas; my oncologist drives to Fort Worth one day a week, which is when I see him. The UTSW-FW complex is just a few blocks from our house, so it is VERY convenient for me!

I think the terms Democrat and Republican are a meaningless distraction. Useful for political campaigns to rally the faithful but irrelevant in the larger scheme of things.

To me the real distinction is globalist vs nationalist. Look around the world at all of the politicians who have been sidelined, from Argentina to France to Romania and on and on. They are all nationalists like Trump. People who believe in putting the interests of their people first and don't bow to those who insist that countries are just historic relics and want open borders and centralized control.

That's absolutely true. But in this case correlation and causation line up. The Democrat Party is rigidly globalist. Has been for quite some time. They drove out the Blue Dogs and anyone else who had a shred of moderation.

And the Republican Party was well down that road before Trump came along and took a big poop on their picnic. The term uniparty gets a lot of work around here for a reason. There are a boatload of globalists in the Republican Party that are more aligned with those goals than they are with Trump's and we all know it.

I could never vote for any Democrat today, not because they are Democrats but because the entire Democrat Party is a corrupt, globalist machine. There are precious few Republicans I will support for the same reason. Trump is our shot at getting our country back.

I don't know if you are on X or follow Mike Davis, head of the Article III project, but he is pretty tight with the Trump administration and he cautions on his X account not to confuse lack of headlines with things not happening at the DOJ. In addition to fighting on many fronts against leftist judges trying to hamstring the Trump administration I think they are working on stuff. Unlike the Garland, they seem to want to build real cases not just grab headlines and abuse the law.

It seemed to me the biggest allure for USAF brass was the removal of the need to plan. A modular plane that could "do it all". Achieve theatre air superiority ? Sure - we'll run the F package for a week or month on everything. OK - we have air superiority. Run a couple wings on the A package and pick some targets or loiter. Everything else maintain superiority. We'll see how it goes.

As I understand it, and I followed it in the beginning and then quit in disgust, its a couple things. Yes - they got the idea that speed and agility weren't THAT important if you had enough electronics and missiles to shoot down six or so bogeys at once. So they did that.

Then they decided it would be could to have swappable modules, so a single plane could shoot down planes this week, and blow up tanks next week, and run electronic warfare the week after that.

And finally, they decided that such a plane could be cheaper than anything made to do only one of those things.
