Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Left puts a heavy burden on David Brooks![]() ![]() “I’m really not a movement guy. I don’t naturally march in demonstrations or attend rallies that I’m not covering as a journalist. But this is what America needs right now. Trump is shackling the greatest institutions in American life. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” – David BrooksRIP David Brooks. He is not dead, but after that quote his career sure is. Before there were “Never Trumpers” there was David Brooks. If you listen closely, you can decipher that a major part of the media’s discourse is about why the Republicans cannot be more like David. He’s their type of guy. Brooks has been playing this game for 25 years, from his book “Bobos in Paradise” to being Safire’s replacement as the house conservative on the NY Times Op-Ed page, to his shtick of being the ideological counterweight to E.J. Dionne on PBS. If Thomas Friedman can claim to know the Arab Street by talking with his taxi driver, then for those who follow the NY Times and PBS Brooks is the guy driving the conservative taxi. Clean, articulate, and reasonable as evidenced by willingness to go with the flow even when it is a riptide carrying oneself out to seaWhat did Brooks' friends on the Left do to the cornerstones of Western Civilization when they had all the power? He wants an uprising? Sounds like insurrection to me. Then again, if you think law firms, nonprofits, and civil servants are the cornerstones of Western civilization you have bigger problems than Donald Trump. A final quote:"So far, the only real hint of something larger - - a mass countermovement - - has been the rallies led by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But this, too, is an ineffective way to respond to Trump; those partisan rallies make this fight seem like a normal contest between Democrats and Republicans. What is happening now is not normal politics. We're seeing an assault on the fundamental institutions of our civic life, things we should all swear loyalty to - - Democrat, independent or Republican."Leave aside that he is favorably citing two socialists, adherents to the most evil force of the 20th Century and antithetical to any part of the American founding. Leave aside that he invokes Marxist symbols. Instead focus on the fact that he neatly summarizes, as only David Brooks can, the current position of the Left: that one swears loyalty to "institutions" and not the Constitution. Thanks for playing, David. Goodbye. The whole piece has some memorable details from Brooks' career that add to the feeling that now it is over. I recommend it. Ace also posted an interesting Peek at the NY Times Elite Writers (9/15/23) that includes some great Fisking. It should have helped kill a career or two. BUT WAIT: My fire-breathing lefty contact on social media just posted a short excerpt from the very latest piece by Brooks, providing hope that the Left will continue to support him as they try to convince Republicans to be like him: Trump’s behavior has aroused great moral indignation. It has aroused in people’s hearts a sense that something sacred is being trampled here — democracy, rule of law, intellectual freedom, compassion, pluralism and global exchange. These things are worth fighting for. Trump’s opponents have still not produced the kind of one-sentence mission statement that he produces — that the elites have betrayed us, so we must destroy them. But I think more people are realizing that we are the beneficiaries of a precious inheritance. Our ancestors bequeathed to us a judicial system, great universities, compassionate aid organizations, great companies and scientific genius. My mission statement would be: America is great, and we will fight for what has made America great. - David Brooks, Trump's Single Stroke of Brilliance, NYT, 4/24/2025I see some "conservative" and even "MAGA" words in there, along with an unhealthy obsession with "elites". Somehow I am not inspired by the guy who has been saying that all Republicans are irredeemable to follow Brooks into the arms of AOC and Bernie Sanders. Do you think that the NYT will find Brooks' argument persuasive to "the other side"? Ambiguity is the subversive's friend. You can be for an invasion of the US by foreigners or the death of Jews and get away with it for so long as you don't openly say so. But sometimes militants in the heat of action forget where their interests lie. "In irae veritas". "In irae veritas" is true of both sides of politics. When people get all worked up they are prone to let their true colors show. The mask drops and we often see something altogether frightening.Compare to David Foster: Will America Drown in Anger? ![]()

And yet no other Republican president in your lifetime got this treatment. Certainly not Bush. And both Obama and Bush deported a lot of illegals. What Trump's team has done with destroying things like USAID and Global Engagement Center will have far bigger impact than is being noticed. One time I opened up a dictionary to look up the word "irony" and it opened up exactly to the page "irony" was on, and that was where my eyes were directly focused. That actually happened. The time to deal with an assault on our form of government was 4 years ago when a usurper was installed in a stolen election who preceded to imprison the opposition, loot the treasury, and force the population to take what he knew were poison shots.
Posted by: 18-1 at April 26, 2025 11:54 AM (t0Rmr) 93
48 Look at the list of types Brooks wants to enlist in his “insurrection”; and it’s all Ruling Class all the way. He doesn’t have the self awareness to realize he’s calling on only about 5% of the population, because he believes that’s the only part that counts.
Probably the best admission yet that Trump fights for the Working Classes, and the left has abandoned them completely. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 26, 2025 11:34 AM (ZEzFB) _______ Brooks has actually had a few clear sighted moments about that. It was only last year he pointed out how his class always seems to come out very well, no matter who's in charge. He's actually quite perceptive; it's a shame he embraced utter shallowness as his fundamental value. Posted by: Eeyore at April 26, 2025 11:54 AM (1bNHn) 94
Let’s be conservative and say there are 20 million illegals. In 4 years it would need on average 100k deportations a week to remove them all. From what I’ve read it’s running at about 100k per quarter.
Nobody realistically expected every last one of them to be deported but I think we all expected the number to be in the many millions. Not a few hundred thousand. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 26, 2025 11:54 AM (nzXzp) 95

IIRC the illegals who have no criminal record beyond being here without the necessary documentation can "self deport" and presuming they fill out the necessary paperwork and submit it through the proper channels would, most likely, be permitted to return.
Especially if, say, they have family here... married to an American or whatever. I would imagine if this is the case there would be an uptick in "legal immigration" as those that were serious about US citizenship and not just freeloaders begin to return... legally. I drove Ace to the airport this morning. He cause a little bit of a ruckus. They weren't going to let him board the plane with his Jake Tapper Voodoo Doll. Something about using the giant pins as a weapon. But, we worked it out. I had some mini-jeweler table clamps in the trunk, and the airline was perfectly cool with those.
He'll replace the pins when he lands. I'm pretty sure they have them in Greenland. Brooks: "Our ancestors bequeathed to us a judicial system, great universities, compassionate aid organizations, great companies and scientific genius."
I get tired of this. The Constitution is a living document when some wish it, and written in stone when its not. Both sides play this game. It comes down to this ... do we rule ourselves or don't we ? Because self-rule is not "go long with the ruling class as long as the ruling class suits me". Frankly - the Founders agreed to a contract. The contract is not a suicide pact, and its not binding for eternity. I won't be bound by something I had no say in the , and apparently have no say now, to whatever extent my little person power allows me to disobey. So, are we self-ruling ? Because if we are, how things operate now have not worked in any sustainable way in my lifetime. Sometimes it has suited of you more. Sometimes less. But according to levels of national debt ? Illegal immigration ? Domestic economic production ? Global trade ? Its not been sustainable in five decades. Maybe its worked to David Brooks satisfaction. I think the terms Democrat and Republican are a meaningless distraction. Useful for political campaigns to rally the faithful but irrelevant in the larger scheme of things. To me the real distinction is globalist vs nationalist. Look around the world at all of the politicians who have been sidelined, from Argentina to France to Romania and on and on. They are all nationalists like Trump. People who believe in putting the interests of their people first and don't bow to those who insist that countries are just historic relics and want open borders and centralized control. We've had Republican presidents before. The visceral hate for Trump, not just from Democrats but from the Brooks/Bulwark crowd, is because he actually loves this country and wants Americans to prosper. That has ALWAYS been a sticking point with me. The smugness of certain people from certain regions regarding their supposed immunity to the taint of slavery. And the Republican Party was well down that road before Trump came along and took a big poop on their picnic. The term uniparty gets a lot of work around here for a reason. There are a boatload of globalists in the Republican Party that are more aligned with those goals than they are with Trump's and we all know it. I could never vote for any Democrat today, not because they are Democrats but because the entire Democrat Party is a corrupt, globalist machine. There are precious few Republicans I will support for the same reason. Trump is our shot at getting our country back. Posted by: JackStraw at April 26, 2025 01:19 PM (viF8m) 241

Yup. And while globalists have been good to the CCP, the CCP is not pro-globalist except where "globalist" means "send everything to China". Posted by: Ian S. at April 26, 2025 01:19 PM (QZThv) 242

You might be right. But if that's the case I'd like us to be the ones dictating terms not them. They've been planning our demise for years calling us deplorable, irredeemable Nazis. I think some of the hate for Trump comes from the fact he's not "political royalty." These people think they're above all of us... morally, intellectually, etc. Trump may be rich, perhaps more so than any of them, but they still look at him as a "commoner." They'd take the same approach with anyone here who'd run and win some political office.
Mostly because we'd refuse to "play their game" and make an attempt to actually do what our supporters want. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 26, 2025 01:32 PM (Q4IgG) 253

I suppose it's all in the eyes of beholder. The left is freaking the fuck out because the DOJ just arrested 2 of the left's most corrupt judges. I don't remember that happening recently. Not to mention deporting the Maryland Man. Remember when people actually cared about him? Seems like just last week. I don't know if you are on X or follow Mike Davis, head of the Article III project, but he is pretty tight with the Trump administration and he cautions on his X account not to confuse lack of headlines with things not happening at the DOJ. In addition to fighting on many fronts against leftist judges trying to hamstring the Trump administration I think they are working on stuff. It seemed to me the biggest allure for USAF brass was the removal of the need to plan. A modular plane that could "do it all". Achieve theatre air superiority ? As I understand it, and I followed it in the beginning and then quit in disgust, its a couple things. Yes - they got the idea that speed and agility weren't THAT important if you had enough electronics and missiles to shoot down six or so bogeys at once. So they did that. Then they decided it would be could to have swappable modules, so a single plane could shoot down planes this week, and blow up tanks next week, and run electronic warfare the week after that. And finally, they decided that such a plane could be cheaper than anything made to do only one of those things. Sound like bullshit yet ? "In irae veritas"? Maybe. But don't forget, "Ira furor brevis est" - "Anger is a brief madness." In anger, we may say something that's lurking in the depths of our hearts, but which our rational selves would never, ever put into action. And don't forget that revenge is a dish best eaten cold: not in the heat of anger, but in the calm chill of reason.
