Tuna never sleeps
Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at April 20, 2025 04:51 AM (xG4kz) - So I asked Grok: Tuna fish don't sleep like humans do. They engage in a behavior called "tonic immobility," where they enter a trance-like state, often upside down, to rest. This isn't sleep with brain shutdown like mammals experience, but it serves a similar restorative purpose. Since tuna must keep moving to breathe, true sleep would be impossible—they'd suffocate. So, they glide or hover in this state, sometimes in groups, to conserve energy while staying oxygenated. "Tonic immobility." Just add gin and lime. Wife update.
She is under the comfort protocol at the ICU. This is basically oxygen, morphine, valium, but not any food. This is the hospital's ethical path to death. All the efforts of medicine to fix her failed. She got weaker and weaker, more and more uncomfortable, until she asked for these treatments to end. I held her hand for hours after the morphine and valium took effect. She was unresponsive after an hour. Not her best look. She has inner toughness, so she is still alive, for varying definitions of alive. Her last complaints were about how bright the lights were. The room was as dark as I could make it. Easter is giving us an answer. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 20, 2025 05:14 AM (u82oZ) 34

"Was it as straightforward as un hooking and unbolting the turbo unit for the swap?
How hard was it to access?" In a FWD P-2 platform, access is much better than with the AWD version, as the angle drive for the AWD really gets in the way, and it's ultimately easier to access the turbo fittings by removing the angle drive. So there are the four bolts/studs holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Three bolts/studs holding the downpipes to the turbo outlet. Two heat shields held in with about 5 bolts. Coolant inlet and outlet banjo bolts, with oil supply banjo bolt and oil drain tube which is simply flanged in. And finally about 4 vacuum lines. But you have to remove the upper motor mount, cross brace and engine mounted bracket as well and the turbo inlet and outlet air piping. So you are working from both under the car and up on top reaching down and behind the engine and against the firewall. And finally you have to rotate the turbo body just right, and bring it up and out from between the engine and firewall. I think the key is a good set of flex head ratchets and/or flex head ratchet wrenched as getting into some of the areas can't be done with traditional tools. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn @AI_Solzhenitsyn 12 Nov 2024 “Over half a century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.’ Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by that upheaval. But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.’” Posted by: m at April 20, 2025 05:45 AM (CQE5S) 63

But its actual phrasing was pure Cupertino: “In order to shift more unknown unknowns towards known unknowns and known knowns over time, it is useful to ensure broad awareness prior to changes taking effect.”
Steve Jobs would have fired this person on the spot and told them to never touch a keyboard again for writing such a piece of convoluted gobbledygook. Certificates are representations of a point in time state of reality. That is, at the point of certificate issuance, all data certified therein is correct and the process followed for that certification is accurately documented for that point in time,” Apple wrote. “The more time passes from that moment of issuance, the more likely it becomes that data represented in the certificate diverge from reality. Thus, a reduction to both certificate lifetimes and data reuse periods increases the average net reliability of certificates.” I get the feeling Apple wants this so they will get less complaints from customers when their Apple products get infected with malware or viruses from dodgy websites they visit in Safari. The entire industry must bend to the will of Apple so Apple has less headaches to deal with. Posted by: SpeakingOf at April 20, 2025 07:30 AM (6ydKt) 122

Hallelujah! Happy Easter, everyone!
Salty, I'm so sorry to hear of the suffering both you and your wife have been enduring. You have taken such good care of her for so long. May God grant her a peaceful death and welcome her into His arms. I'm so glad to hear you have been praying for her in the chapel. Those prayers will not go unheeded. Catholics invoke St. Joseph as the patron saint of a happy death, as he was presumably surrounded by Jesus and Mary when he died. I will ask St. Joseph to intercede for your wife and grant her that happy death. As he is also the patron Saint of husbands, I will ask him to intercede for you too. And of course I will pray to the Heavenly Father to take her into His loving arms when it is time. Posted by: bluebell at April 20, 2025 08:33 AM (79pEw) 208

33 Wife update.
The Midnight Ruling by Roberts may be the the biggest fuck up by the Supreme Court in over 150 years.
It may become viewed worse than Korematsu, Plessy and Dredd Scott. It violated all procedure, all precedent, and all court rules, to usurp power from the Executive for ... criminal aliens. Josh Blackman over at Reason is scathing. He points out that it even violates the holy founding of the SCOTUS power-- Marbury v. Madison. Today my aunt would have been 88 years old. She passed away at the beginning of March. Yesterday was her funeral. There were some delays with the cremation and the church. Nonetheless, my older brother, Thing One, and his wife and I were in attendance. Thing Two, younger brother, and his wife were sick and couldn't be there. I hugged my two cousins, aunt's daughters, and successfully avoided and ignored their brother, The Pretentious Prick.

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at April 20, 2025 08:42 AM (GoasG) nitter.net/lokijulianus From Alito's dissent on the ex parte class wide habeas relief. In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court issued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the application, with dubious factual support for its order, and without providing any explanation for its order. I refused to join the Court's order because we had no good reason to think that, under the circumstances, issuing an order at midnight was necessary or appropriate. Both the Executive and the Judiciary have an obligation to follow the law. The Executive must proceed under the terms of our order in Trump v. J. G. G., 604 U. S. __ (2025) (per curiam), and this Court should follow established procedures. Posted by: m at April 20, 2025 09:19 AM (CQE5S) 240
