Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti 16GB edition is here and it's eh. (Tom's Hardware)

The other two cards announced today, the 5060 Ti 8GB edition and the 5060 non-Ti, are nowhere to be found.

If you're not using ray tracing, it's about 10% slower than my Radeon 7800 XT and costs about 25% more at retail. Retail prices may settle down eventually, but they haven't been great so far in Nvidia's 5000-series launch.

If you are using ray tracing, it's about 5% faster than my Radeon 7800 XT - but still 25% more expensive.

That retail price places it just 10% cheaper than AMD's new 9070 (non-XT) card, which averages 50% faster at 4k resolution.

It does better at Stable Diffusion (AI image generation) and runs acceptably cool and quiet, but you should definitely wait to see what the Radeon 9060 delivers if you're in the market.

7 I gotta say, the website for our electrical service provider gives a rather detailed energy usage report.

It can even be broken down by 15 minute increments.

So I can see when I woke up and turned on the coffee pot, note when the electric hot water heater was heating water, and toaster oven usage.

It eve allows me to spot when the low voltage lighting in the yard comes on. And that only draws a total of about 20 watts.

But what I have to back up at present doesn't even fill a 32GB flash drive, let alone a 64 or larger, so I think I'm okay until I want to do a complete drive backup eventually.

36 Update on my wife:

She is in the premier medical hospital in Kansas KU Med in Kansas City. She is uncomfortably in the center of a plethora of tubes and wires, with numerous monitors and capturing every bodily function and hick-up. This is her fourth medical institution since it all started last Thursday.

No decision on surgery yet. The unfixable damage she has incurred since being put in medical hands (from her worn out circulatory system) gives her, at best, a 38% chance of dying during the operation.

Her humanity seems lost in the invasive technology. I wonder if the promise of feeling better can be reached at this point.

She is 130 miles away. I leave from home soon.

41 I seem to be waking about 30-45 minutes ahead of my alarm -- when I set it, that is, to get up and work out. Still, 6.5 hours a night, and 1.5 as a nap, is way better for me than the barely 6 I was getting per night in my last year or so of work.

Best Buy didn't carry any of those, I think. Everything was small SSDs rather than the iPhone-sized drives I've used at work for years. Maybe Walmart will have them.

No idea; that's what I was told by the 20-something clerk at the Best Buy. Naturally I'm looking into the actual facts. He seemed to think the solid-state drives didn't work with Macs, though he might only know about the newest ones. My iMac is from about 2013. Though I have updated it, and I can add more memory.

Any USB external SSD can work with MacOS.

You just have to make sure it’s formatted correctly.

If it’s formatted with FAT32 it will work with Windows or MacOS.

If you want to use it with Time Machine in MacOS it needs to be in APFS (Apple File System) or Mac Extended format so that it can journal correctly to for doing file searches, etc.

Some SSDs are sold as MacOS ready already with APFS but any SSD can be reformatted to what you need it to be on your system.

$90 isn’t bad for a 1TB external drive.

That pretty much sums but both the release of the 4XXX and 5XXX series GPUs, doesn't it?

I heard someone make an interesting point the other day as well. The 5 series is sort of fitting in price-wise with the existence of the 4 series, so that it should be viewed not as an updated GPU series but an extension of the 4 line.

The app you use in MacOS to format drives is called “Disk Utility” .

You can then format it to what you need with that.

Just make sure the drive is empty, or you’ve backed up everything on it, because it will erase the drive when reformatting.

74 I'm buying a Mac Mini. Yes, I know they are lightweight compared to something else. When I retired, I told myself I wouldn't deal with Windows any more and doing my taxes using my laptop sealed the deal. I have a decent monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse. I don't do anything that requires power and I have phone and iPad for portability. Will see how it goes

80 Since retiring from full-time work (jeez, fifteen years ago?) I've moved away from Windows as much as I can. There's still a Windows machine here, but I use it for only a couple of programs that don't seem all that happy under the Chrome OS implementation of Linux. Been using Chromebooks and Chromeboxes and so far they're doing pretty much what I need.

Wolfus, it takes a LONG time for that mental alarm clock to go away. Trust me on this.

84 Nvidia took a $5 billion charge a few days ago for H2O chips it built for Chinese customers but can no longer ship to them, due to a Trump admin export control.

What mystifies me is that those chips are being thrown away, instead of sold to other customers. Why? Every other piece of news says Nvidia claims big order backlogs, and even if those chips aren't the absolute top performing chips they were good enough for DeepSeek to use, so you would think they would easily find alternate customers.

But Nvidia tossed them instead. Very odd.

The modern ones might have the smaller USB-C socket. Both of my machines, the MacBook Air and the iMac (both ca. 2014), have the standard USB 3.0. I bought a cable at BB -- USB to USB-C -- to link my Android phone to the computer, and can upload pics from my phone if I put them both in Bluetooth mode.

I'm not really a Mac fanboy. I inherited both of these from work, and "free" is a strong incentive. They have their quirks, but like a 1980s Mercedes, once you learn about those, they just *work*.

Now that the floodwaters are mostly gone we've discovered that there's a cave entrance in the field behind our property. It's owned by someone else, but we could clearly see a small-medium sized hole in a hillside that previously wasn't there.

The area is littered with them.... but seldom do you see an entrance on the surface. The geologists call it Karst topology. It's why there are so many sinkholes around here too.

And the sales pitch to trade your older machine in on a new one. Once I made it clear I wasn't interested in a newer ($$$) machine, and wasn't worried about being able to run the newest and greatest apps on my older computers, the salesman lost interest in me.

I strongly disagree with his trendy, lukewarm takes on the dirty Jooz. But that's par for the course, and not remarkable at all. It's required for the bien pensant crowd, and he's no different than literally everyone else on YouTube in that regard, and I can't be bothered to watch his Rogan appearance. I've heard all that a million times from his and a million other mouths.

What gets me about this, is that I have heard of him for a long time, and I find it mighty big of Murray to condescend to debate him. For all Murray's own shortcomings, he's a legitimate intellectual heavyweight, where Smith has always been a total flake with stupidity in his eyes.

I could go on and on, but why bother? Smith is active in Libertarian Party politics. That's all anyone needs to know. The LP is a circus for retards and mental patients. Oh, the Macs have their quirks. I tried installing a utility I've used for some years now on PCs, youtube-dl, that allows you to grab online videos and download them easily. Not in the Apple world. You have to download and install something called Homebrew first; my current operating system is too old to install that; and I'm not sure I have the memory right now to handle the latest OS. So my video-snatching will have to be done on a Win machine.

Which is good for system reliability and such, but I'm pretty sure the "it just works" ad campaign was one of the first influencer style pushes on the tech world
