“Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.”

Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

36 It's odd. As nice as this rendering is, it is definitely missing something. Feels bereft of emotion, tragedy, suffering, cost. Even the way the figure is posed -- he doesn't have the weight of gravity bearing on him. He is standing, like a model in a studio, not hanging, lifeless from the spikes in his hands. There is no trace of the scourging that preceded this awful event, nor of the crown that was thrust on his head. A nearly bloodless rendering of THE seminal shedding of blood.

Posted by: Oh, wait... at April 18, 2025 09:46 AM (dg+HA)

39 The realism he brings to his paintings is what makes them, especially this one, so powerful. There is nothing abstract or distant in the image. The viewer sees the suffering as if they were standing right there. As long as they look at it, they cannot escape the emotional reaction. The only relief is that Christ's body is clean and the cloth is pure. I don't know if that was to make the moment less horrific or was intended to inspire hope. One of the most powerful paintings of Christ on the cross I've seen.

Check out Francisco de Zurbarán's other paintings: mythology, still life, and nature. They bring a surprising level of detail and accuracy that is astonishing.

Posted by: JTB at April 18, 2025 09:47 AM (yTvNw)

40 From the Chicago page:

In 1627 Francisco de Zurbarán, then living and working in the provincial Spanish town of Llerena, painted this Crucifixion for the monastery of San Pablo el Real in prosperous Seville. In the dimly lit sacristy where it was installed, the image of Christ awed the faithful. A later commentator noted that it appeared to be a sculpture rather than a painting. Zurbarán envisioned the crucified Christ suspended outside of time and place. Conforming to Counter-Reformation dictates, the artist depicted the event occurring not in a crowd but in isolation. Emerging from a dark background, the austere figure has been both idealized in its quiet, graceful beauty and elegant rendering and humanized by the individualized face and insistent realism.

FWIW, over on Insty, Mark Tapscott put up his annual Hill Faith apologetic explaining evidence for the resurrection.

And just recently, archaeologists found in a dig within the Church of the Holy Selpulcher during remodeling and strengthening the structure (damaged by past earthquakes) signs that the tomb had gardens surrounding it.

Evidence is there if one seeks proof. Likewise, there is never absolute certainty in almost anything so the link between evidence and beliefs is faith.

77 I can read the Latin: Iesus nazaranus rex iudæorem. I would have thought it would be nazarensis and similarly for “of the Jews”. But I’ve only self-taught myself about a semester’s worth of Latin. Does anyone know Latin better than I? Also, I can’t really make out the Greek (little Latin and less Greek). I thought Basileion would be used for king. Does anyone here read Greek? Presumably koine. Finally I have no Hebrew. Was the inscription in Hebrew or Aramaic? They use the same letters and many believe (as I do) that Jesus spoke Aramaic as his everyday language. It would have been the lingua Franca of his hometown Nazareth (yes, I know Bethlehem, but he grew up in Nazareth). He read Hebrew and probably spoke koine and Latin, as well. I know the argument that he could and can speak all languages being God and very God. I seem to remember an SF short story wherein Jesus is giving the sermon on the mount when he turns to a time traveler in the audience and tells him in perfect modern English to go back where he came from - he didn’t belong there. That must have been a Christian author.

I admit I'm fuzzy on the whole timing thing. Jesus was mounted on the cross in the morning. But doesn't the Bible say it was "the ninth hour" when He cried out for the last time, and died? Now the Romans counted from sunrise, which in spring would have been about six am, and the ninth hour would have been three pm. (They did the same in winter, but the hours were just shorter.) So He was up there for some five or six hours?

Wasn't he only on the cross for three hours, though? That doesn't sound like enough time to span both the morning sacrifice and the evening one.

And I think he died about 3PM, which doesn't sound like "evening" to me. (Even though it was dark due to His death.)

82 About the possibility of the footrest (suppedaneum):

Next, the feet were fixed to the cross, either by nails or ropes. Ossuary findings and the Shroud of Turin suggest that nailing was the preferred Roman practice. (23, 24, 30) Although the feet could be fixed to the sides of the stipes or to a wooden footrest (suppedaneum), they usually were nailed directly to the front of the stipes (Fig 5). (11) To accomplish this, flexion of the knees may have been quite prominent, and the bent legs may have been rotated laterally (Fig 6). (23, 24, 25, 30)

Honestly? I am agnostic on the piece of cloth… maybe, maybe not. My faith does not hinge on any relic.

90 "Putting Synoptic Gospels’ accounts together, Jesus was crucified at the third hour. Darkness descended at the sixth hour until the ninth hour, and Jesus died about the ninth hour. Jesus was on the cross for about six hours, three of those in total darkness. ...the Jewish day started at sundown, but hours were counted from sunup, which would be roughly 6:00 AM. So the third hour when Jesus was crucified would be three hours after sunup, or about 9:00 AM. The sixth hour when darkness descended would be roughly noon, and the ninth hour when Jesus died would be about 3:00 PM."

How empty the world must have been at 3:01 pm

I believe it really is Christ's visage, formed by some supernatural burst of energy that still cannot be dully explained , but is likened to the energy released by an atomic bomb The new findings on the shroud are pretty incredible. Boy, would i love to see it in person someday.

No prob. Even the Catholic Church does not take an official position on the Shroud, so obviously they don't think it's crucial to one's faith, either.

But, as I said, I think it's a fascinating question.

Posted by: Bulg at April 18, 2025 10:14 AM (77rzZ)

98 Perhaps I'm mistaken but I thought that when He died, the skies turned as dark as night. I seem to remember that from Sunday school. If that is correct then this work depicts the moments immediately following His death. But His injuries were not healed. So why are the injuries not depicted here? Why not show the signs of His torture and suffering?

This is an amazing work but it seems cold to me. We aren't allowed to see how He suffered for us.

Inexplicable and we have no technology to duplicate just how it was done and the ancients show no such sign that they developed it either as you would have found more shrouds such as the Shroud of Turin.

Again, turns ultimately on faith separating those that believe and those that do not. Sheep and goats in biblical language which is actually a real thing that shepherds even today have to accomplish when separating them for foraging. Goats can eat what sheep cannot and are more sure footed to eat on rocky hillsides. Sheep need better forage. And so on.

101 I seem to have gotten fixated on the inscription and not commented on the actual scene. The reviling and torture unto death of our Savior is just so awful. I agree that this depiction, masterful in its artistry, softens the horribleness of his suffering. Even so, it is so very hard to look at. Thank God He accomplished what He set out to do! And how horrible that He paid my sins, all my sins, this way! Thank you Lord!

As they should, if the spiritual leaders do not believe in the tenets of their own faith, then they should not be a leader.

But, a lot depends on the exact exchange between people that we do not know. If the rabbi (or purported rabbi) had Jesus smacked in his face, then he might have replied in kind.

More or less, the division between Judaism and Christianity is identifying Christ as the Messiah. Both faiths rely on the prophesies in the Old Testament to make their case and the few historical facts and accounts to buttress their opinions--Messiah or not.

Christians take the first and Judaism the second which makes Christianity a heresy for Jews at the time and perhaps false teaching for Gentiles. Strictly speaking Christian Gentiles cannot be heretics from Judaism so there is that.

Islam classifies Jesus as a prophet which may also indicate past influences by iconoclasts in the Byzantine Church, Nestorians, Arianism, and various other disputes about the divinity and type of divinity Jesus represented.

Part of the argument, I think, was a controversial ossuary with possibly the name of Jesus on it. Problem with that is the name Jesus in Hebrew was not uncommon at the time especially after the crucifixion. It also assumes that roughly 500 or so witnesses were lying as to the Resurrection. In the end, it always comes down to belief and people will rearrange the facts in a way that makes sense to them.

My sister, brought up in the same church, now says the Disciples set up Jonestown. That’s not quite true, the sect that set up Jonestown split off from the Disciples. Sister is now Southern Baptist. Joining PCUSA was my late wife’s influence. We always looked for a Bible believing (and preaching) minister. Eventually that became too difficult in the PCUSA. It’s much better in the PCA. My current church has been a real support to me, both spiritually and personally. The don’t give in to the fault James chided Christians for of wishing someone well but then not doing anything. My Mom's only soap opera was As the World Turns. Watched it every day. I remember one ep back in the 70s, broadcast on Good Friday, where the characters all went to church, and listened to a sermon about the seven words from the cross. The whole episode was about the church service, and the Crucifxion.

Imagine such a thing being broadcast on a soap opera today.
