Forgive me all, I have been ill and in the field for over a week now. The "Sven" family read with great sadness of Jewells45 from her long-term fight. On behalf of my son who is in the field now, and myself I want to let Jewell's family know that during my wife's multiple deployments overseas in the lad's youth he laughed heartily at Jewell's and Jane Doh's presence there along with Tammy, Gingy and many others and viewed them as a feminine presence in his life even if from afar and through the cyber numbers. It is with sincere and deep regret that I must confess that in my absence from MoMees I never met her in person, but given the span of time some of us have "known" each other here I feel there is some level of emotional attachment approaching the meat world at some point.
I cannot bring her survivors comfort, but I can say with all sincerity that the world is the lesser and heaven the greater for her loss and now presence and she will be missed horribly. My wife "Pac" will most likely want to write a few words having battled cancer herself and having drawn strength and joy both from Jewell's kindness and dignity and her fine jewelry. Be safe and be well y'all. Posted by: sven at April 16, 2025 10:40 PM (X0I7i) 117

Bezo's dildo ride is pure space tourism, basically an amusement park thrill ride for billionaires and celebrities. It's flight profile is basically vertical. Capsule lands only ~2 miles from the launch pad. It goes straight up under power, then engine shuts off and it coasts staight up to apogee just over the 60 miles Karman line boundary. Then free falls back down vertically. There is a brief 5.5g peak when it hits thicker atmosphere, the thing is designed to slow down quickly. Hard, but fast. Basically, a little discomfort for a few seconds. Then, not too bad. Heating load on the thing is about the least it can be for anything called reentry. Heat shield temps may hit a few hundred, compared to thousands, hot plasma for an orbital or Alan Shepard reentry. This is about the safest way to give a joyride that can be technically called going into space. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 16, 2025 10:57 PM (w6EFb) 160

“Reliability” was studied a lot at the time, how does one quantify reliability, mtbf? Percentage wise. And just what is an acceptable reliability percentage for human rated rockets and spacecraft?
As a practical matter they discovered having the astronauts visit the factories and assembly lines and meet with the employees impressed upon them more personally how important it was the job they were doing. One thing you’ll hear is how much more powerful your laptop computer is than the Apollo spacecraft. That’s true, but they had to have it reliable. If it it horked, they were dead. Would you trust your lap top for two weeks straight not to fail in any way, or you die? Posted by: Common Tater at April 16, 2025 11:00 PM (SpYDH) 167

Transistors and ICs were brand new technology and not fully trusted yet. For the guidance and navigation computers one thing they did that was interesting was specifying one single transistor type, and only one. The fear was that they had to order enough of them, so the company (Fairchild) would find it cost effective to make them in the first place. They also mandated that the same transistor be used in all the ground support and testing equipment. They ordered a bunch of them, and then would burn them in, and if they had any rejects, they would reject the entire lot.

https://mol.im/a/14615787 Posted by: Ciampino - it will be a short lived uprising at April 16, 2025 11:05 PM (sPQoU) I didn't know this until I saw clips from a Gaza conference in the US over the weekend, but these folks call the USA 'Empire' for short, and have every intention of taking us down BAMN. Pretty scary stuff. What I find additionally strange about this is that if this were a traditional movement for independence, they would confine their attentions to the supposed colonizers, and demand their freedom in ways nonviolent (optimal) and violent. With these folks, they actually want to facilitate the destruction of countries that aren't directly suppressing them, but instead have some perceived influence over who they believe is doing the suppressing. This makes it even clearer that they are part of a much larger movement that has nefarious intent - if they want to take the US down, they are looking for global domination. That's a lot bigger than 'liberation' of a territory not much bigger than a few boroughs in NYC. Apollo used an ordinary kitchen timer (with a bell dinger) onboard to time certain tasks. They found it useful in the simulators, so eventually incorporated it into the space craft. They always used proven, reliable already existing tech whenever they could.
The story of the software is really interesting if you like that sort of thing. “Software” wasn’t even thought of when the contracts were let. Eventually they discovered it was a “pacing item” and they better get their shit together if they wanted to get to the moon. “Don’t tell our friends” was the reply one wife said to her husband when she asked what it was he did in the space program. The US Navy has a paper on restoring salt water submerged electronics.
Basically, water doesn’t hurt electronics, with a few exceptions, component wise. Powering it up while still wet, that is a big no-no. Usually even fresh water leaves behind conductive salts or contaminants that have to be flushed away, distilled water, and then thoroughly dried before powering back up. A flat earther. These exist. This stuff had sort of resurgence maybe 10 - 15 years ago. Why, I don't know, maybe more of the "everything they tell us is a lie" dynamic. I was looking at Don Pettit's X feed the other day, where he posted some very nice shots of earth, this one some time-lapse trails of some Starlink satellites. Is it a Variac of some sort? Posted by: Ciampino - variable voltage supply? at April 17, 2025 02:44 AM (sPQoU) 319
The flat-earth cosmogony, if you can call it that, is interesting. It draws very literally on the language from Genesis. Their view is basically, the earth, or at least the portion we know is a flat disc that looks like the azimuthal equidistant map projection around the North Pole: https://tinyurl.com/h9vop2h Antarctica is an "ice wall" that blocks off the edge of the disc. The sky above is the "firmament". This is like a glass dome. The planets and stars are just "objects" on the firmament. Well, the Sun and the Moon (and planets) move relative to the background of stars, and I'm not sure. The sun and moon, rather than spheres, are sort of like circling flashlights, fairly close to the surface. That's how the explain night and day. What's underneath the disc? Well, they sort of take the "Foundations of the Earth" literally somehow there as well. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 17, 2025 02:50 AM (w6EFb) 320
