Here's something for the Pet Thread: The 2025 Starkville Derby is coming up! It's billed as the "World's Largest Wiener Dog Race" and is held annually in Starkville, Mississippi (which is also home to my alma mater, Mississippi State University). Best, Bert GThanks, Bert! Sounds like a great event!
![]() ![]() This is Finn the Cool, our new addition. He may look cute, but he is 7 lb of attitude. Lincoln had a tough year last year, being so sick and then getting attacked at the dog park, we thought he might like a companion. We thought a puppy might be a better fit than an adult dog, but we've never had a small dog or a beagle. They are smart, fearless and full of energy. Lincoln took to him immediately. They play constantly and wear each other out. Although, he just found his voice and has been singing us the songs of his people, we love this furball. MegtheredWe are lucky to see these early photos of the charming new pup! Lincoln looks happy to have Finn as a new friend. ![]() Hi, Buzzion here. My dog Tali went missing on 3/27 in Piqua Ohio. Somehow she got out of my backyard or was taken but I have no idea how. With Watson passing away in December this has just absolutely destroyed me. I've had no luck with sightings nor the surrounding county animal shelters. I just wish she would come back.Oh no! Prayers for you and Tali! What a sweetheart. ![]() Long time lurker and rare poster Scont here. This is a pic of my cat Marilyn. I found her on the side of the road half starved to death back in 2011. Took her in and she soon became a permanent fixture on my lap. One day I was brushing her and wound up with a big wad of shed fur. I flattened it and put it on her head. It's a miracle that she stayed still long enough for me to snap the picture. Not really our pets but we have some tiny tweety birds that made a nest in the eaves of our back patio some years back and they come back every year to hatch and raise two young ones. We put seed out for them when they show up until they leave in the late spring.
I looked out this morning about 5:30 and saw the male bird flitting around well before day break. I thought it odd but went on to take my shower. Once it got daylight I saw both baby birds laying on the patio, one was clearly dead and the other was not too far behind. Momma bird was clinging to the edge of the eave barely alive, she soon fell dead. Something had gotten up in the eaves and killed three of the four birds. Whatever it was did not disturb our dogs or make any noises that we heard. It did not eat the birds it just killed them and left them there. We have no idea what could have gotten up there without making any noise the dogs would have heard. If it was an owl it would have eaten the birds. There is a wiener dog race every year in Texas, too - in Buda, just south of Austin. It's sponsored by the Lions, and very well organized, as we saw during the years that we went to it. The yearly poster for it is a parody of a current movie - some years ago it was "Lord of the Wiens", once it was "Reservoir Wiens" and one year it was "Gone with the Wien". This year, it looks like it is "Dogzilla Plus One".

Afternoon, Animal Folken (since we often celebrate other animals as well as pets)! I'm sorry to hear about the disappearance of Tali, Buzzion. I take it she's the brindle dog facing the camera? What breed is she, and how old?
The "Trump Kitty," Marilyn, looks like a tri-color beauty. And the video of the four cats settling into their bunk beds, each facing in alternate directions, is amazing. My Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are coming along fine. Big black Stirling is adjusting to my being home so much by bothering me on the sofa or at my desk while at the computer. Little gray Dagny has emerged from her nest in the bedroom window, but spends a lot of time still apart from me on the bathroom counter. Though she and Stirling both happen to be out here now on the end table, grooming themselves and each other. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 19, 2025 04:11 PM (omVj0) 22

We've sighted the feral tortoiseshell that Miss Linda and I have been feeding occasionally for more than a year, the first time in a while. Considering the ferals' lifestyle, I wonder if she went off to have a litter of wild kittens, and is back on the stroll, so to speak.
Considering, too, all the dangers here from cars, feral hominids, and maybe even coyotes, I'm amazed she's still around at all. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 19, 2025 04:17 PM (omVj0) 28

Buzzion. So sorry. The pets as always are so cute.
As many of you know, my friends cats are here everyday from 11am to about 6pm. What you may not know is they have cats leashes where you can your indoor cat for a walk. My friends had a birthday party for one of their kids, tons of cousins. Because I am thoroughly cleaning the house, I brought over catnip and a cat leash. The kids put the leash on Snowflake, who is an outdoor cat except for her indoor afternoons with me. She went bat crap insane. The experiment lasted 20 seconds. Crazy video. Hell, I'll go give her a kiss now before cleaning the purple room. Everyone have a great weekend. I figured if ever a cat would go along with it, it would be her. And she did. The first time a little reluctantly; the second time with more enthusiasm; the third time, she saw the harness and ran to the door crying. Haven't tried it with Stirling. He too is smart, easygoing, and adaptable, but he may be too grownup to adapt to that. (On the other hand, M-A was six or seven years old.) Pretty sure Dagny won't like it. She cried piteously when Linda carried her outside for a few moments in the Snow Surprise this past January. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 19, 2025 04:55 PM (omVj0) 51
2025-04-19 20:15:37 (Day of year: 2025.109). That is so sweet. I used to feed cats on a chest freezer in our entry when we had agile cats to keep the dogs out of cat food. We had indoor/outdoor cats at the time and didn't have to worry about litter box. With a small dog perhaps baby gates that the cats can hop over but the dog cannot with the litter box and food in that room?

One of the joys of having a senior rescue dog is when they remember they were once puppies. Precious is 17 now and loves to walk when it's windy. She does her business then stands, facing into the breeze, and lets the aromas of the world come to her. Each sniff can bring something new, maybe intriguing. Although she moves like an old dog (which I can identify with) when we get inside and take off the leash she prances to the extent she can. She is so pleased at her accomplishment. It makes us smile every time.
